Having been born in 1941, raised in Ellicott City and its surroundings until 1957 I heard once again the names of people that were my fathers peers. It is a good read even if you are not that old.

This is a well thought out book that is very easy to read.

I enjoyed reading the history of Ellicott City, Maryland. It is a very professional book that contains history of the historic town of Ellicott City, Maryland. The writer is a local gentleman who has a wealth of knowledge. He was born and raised in Ellicott City. So many people asked Mr. Shipley to write his recollections of growing up in a small town. This was accomplished through this wonderful publication.

This book is an excellent choice for children. The author writes in a very straight-forward way. Death is not something that should be a secret. Children need to understand, or at least be exposed, to this concept. Younger children (below age 5) may not grasp the full picture. However, I would recommend this book to any parent or teacher who is trying to broaden their libraries. It is a must have!

About accepting coming death, and finding joy in life

Sensitively written by Donna Jo Napoli, Flamingo Dreams is a color picturebook about a very serious theme -- coping with grief. Told from the point of view of a child losing a father to a slow bout with cancer, Flamingo Dreams is about accepting coming death, coping, and finding joy in life. With a marked art style by Cathie Felstead that is very similar to how young children themselves draw with crayons, Flamingo Dreams is a touching and heartfelt book highly recommended to help young people through great loss.

A gnostic, inspiring, uplifting,life-transforming epic poem.
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-20
This more-than-700-page poem in iambic pentameter expounds virtually every aspect of Sri Aurobindo's clarification and modernization of the ancient Vedic-Yogic spiritual path. It is both didactic and intimately inspiring, including tender scenes between Satyavan and Savitri, the hero and heroine of the poem. It is unique in spiritual literature of its era in that the pronouns "he" and "she" with their correlatives appear in approximately equal proportions. Women can read this work and feel, for once, that they are not left out of what has seemed too often a patriarchal spiritual path. Sri Aurobindo is not only the finest modern expositor of yoga, in a potent version which he called Purna Yoga, or Integral Yoga, but a brilliant intellectual with competence in classical and modern languages. His semi-Shakespearean prose brings to life, in this book which is almost a scripture for his followers, the convincing architectonic philosophy he expounds lucidly in The Life Divine, his other major tome. The Mother, the French woman whose original name was Mira Alfassa Richard, his chaste yogic consort for about the last twenty-five years of his life, has said that to read Savitri is to be doing yoga. I feel while I am perusing it that Sri Aurobindo is in communication with me, and attempting, as only a Master of Yoga can, to help me over the hard places and even "operate on" me spiritually to correct my all-too-human imperfections. I can't praise Savitri too highly.

This is the one book to treasure above all, it has the power to transport you to realms beyond human imagination. The mantric quality of the words resonates within leaving a impression that permeates all activities.Based on an ancient Hindu legend,Savitri represents the Divine Shakti(power) that manifests on earth as a result of her father's,King Ashwapati's yoga.In effect this is also the yoga of Sri Aurobindo, related in prose form of poetry.Encompasses all human experience within its 23,000+ lines."A nectar of honey in the combs of god", in Sri Aurobindo's own words.

The definitive textbook on geriatrics nursing
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-10

This book is the definitive text on geriatrics nursing. Its primary author, Priscilla Ebersole, RN, PhD, FAAN, is the editor of Geriatric Nursing, the leading magazine in the field, and is professor emerita of nursing, San Francisco State University and a pioneer in the field of geriatrics nursing.

The list of contributors is a veritable 'Who's Who' in the field, and the text is as complete and definitive as might be expected of such a staff, each of whom is an expert in their own right.

Mosby, a leader in the field, has outdone themselves in this effort.

Outstanding History
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-03
The West Point Word War II series is one of the best sources of history on the Second World War. The Atlases associated with each volume are a must because the text refers to them frequently. The writing style is not overly technical and explains the foundations of military doctrine followed by the respective combatants in prosecuting the conflict.

The authors are able to point out the fundamental errors made by each side, the results of those miscalculations and what adjustments (if any) were made. The correct deductions are also put on display for the reader. And the authors manage to make the conflict dramatic in a professional way. For example, at the battle of Midway the Americans had put all their critical assets at risk. If all the US carriers were lost the situation in the Pacific would have been ruinous. The authors clearly point out that the Japanese fleet was overwhelming, and properly used could not have lost that battle. The American command was counting on Japanese mistakes, and the Japanese made them.

Thus, the West Point historians have injected the true drama of the situation in June of 1942. A lot was on the line and the history of WWII would have been far different if the US admirals had made the mistakes instead of the Japanese.

The entire series is filled with this kind of drama.

The background sections which cover the road to WWII is thought provoking and shows how the outcome of the war, in many respects, was determined prior to the start of hostilities. The books cover the mental attitudes that contributed to the start of the war and the course of the conflict.

The series isn't perfect. The US Army writers find a little time to subtly criticize some actions of the US Navy and US Marines. They seem to like implying the Marines were getting a lot of publicity for doing the same thing the Army was doing. This is a very minor criticism and such minor diversions do not detract at all from the superlative standards set by this very complete history.

Anyone interested in WWII, its causes, conduct and outcomes, must read this set (one book covers the Pacific war and the other the European war - and there is an atlas for each of these volumes for a total of 4 books).

First off, you will also want The Sheep Brain: A Basic Guide
by Richard K. Cooley to go along with this. This book is more lab-manual style then the other book, but has the same great qualities - it is meant to be right by your side when you are dissecting, not in the library. If you're concerned, i\t's easy to photocopy for personal use. The main thing I like about this and the other book is that the price is right for any budget. You shouldn't have to pay more for the book than you do for the brains :)

Sheep brain lab manual

An excellent manual. The manual provides sagittal, horizontal and coronal views of the sheep brain, with slices that are of excellent quality. In addition, there are gross dissections that allow students an excellent understanding of the relations between the basic structures of the ventral brain. Most of us who get sheep brains for our labs from laboratory supply houses can only dream of the cranial nerves shown in clear detail here. At the University of Guelph, we are one of the few holdout universities that offer the sheep brain dissection to large introductory biopsychology classes, and although excellent photographic series are available on the Web, nothing can replace actually going through a sheep brain. This manual is very, very helpful in this pursuit. Highly recommended.

Being in the business for several years now I have searched long and hard for a manual or book that sums it all up, well folks, I've found it. From cover to cover this book is filled with all you need to know for on site construction. Not only does it have all the info I need it is sizeable enough that I can carry it with me everywhere on the job and believe me I do. Not only that but I believe that my son will be able to use it in his studies in college. All in all you can't go wrong with this book. It's a one in a million deal.

Finally, a book that answers the REAL questions.......

I found the book to be an inclusive reference for the many scattered bits of data, information and guidance that are needed when one takes on the construction of a large project, such as a golf course. The multitude of decisions that you run into normally cause many delays, while the answers are sought and decisions are pondered. This book gives a quick reference that can be handy to both the site superintendent or construction foreman. A must for any golf course superintendent and everyone involved in golf course construction.

EATON'S Mirrors the Rise & Decline of Downtown Winnipeg
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-26
This is an excellent book. Downtown Winnipeg used to be destination of choice, mainly because of the EATON'S store and to a lesser extent, also the Hudson's Bay store a few blocks west. Up until the late 1970s a trip downtown was something special, as these stores anchored a viable business and retail district. But the expansion of the city into an urban sprawl, and with that the requisite suburban malls, gradually diminished the need/desire to head into town. Looking back, it is hard to believe that EATON'S had such a large market share and employed so many people. The implosion seemed to happen so quickly ie the downward spiral started in the 1980s when the company lost it's ability to adapt the changing North American retail trends. This book chronicles an important chapter in the history of Winnipeg.

I first saw this book in a bookstore on a trip to Winnipeg. After paging through it I found it hard to put down, but didn't purchase it at the time. A few months passed and then decided to order it from amazon.

The author goes deep into the facility and also the entire city of Winnipeg. This is an excellent history of Eaton's. I recommend it not only for the local Manitobans but anyone into history and culture.
