Seems realistic and like many of the esoteric groups of the 70's. The author's sexualization of the material is somewhat adolescent. Overall a fun read.

The cartoons on the dustjacket are more amusing than the contents. Here is a collection of scholarly papers dissecting the extent of corruption, and the countervailing reform movement, in American history.

The most interesting chapter is on the water supply. It explains how people in American cities needed a clean and reliable supply. Along with what was done before this became available. Households would dig privies or cesspools on their lots. A cesspool would take wet waste, and would usually be in a basement [!] or right next to the house. Cesspool overflow was very common. Can you, the modern reader, imagine having a cesspool in your basement? Let alone having it regularly overflow? Yuk.

In other cases, liquid wastes would be tossed into the street, and solid wastes would be called "night soil" and used as fertiliser. And the now charming and picturesque cobblestones made cleaning of streets harder than the macadamised roads which would replace them.

That chapter goes on to relate how municipal water systems were eventually built in all the cities. But the above descriptions are the most vivid passages in the book, and I thought I'd share them with you. Since you surely are intrigued by toilets.

I did not read the book. I am hoping to buy it but I must figure out how to do so from my part of the world without an american credit card

The book is good and useful but it is very specific as a result of the event presented at that time. It would be more interesting if the content could be applied in more actual fields of study.

Great. It dispels the myth that "Moonies are mindless automatons" because there is more disagreement and varied interpretations among the Unificationists than among the Evangelicals!

This book is for anyone who is deeply interested in the similarities and differences between Evangelical Christianity and Unificationism.

I thought this was a fabulous book. Honestly, I thought that I might not be interested in the subject matter when I picked it up, but I found it quite riveting. It was clearly researched and edited with tremendous detail--I enjoyed the many anecdotes that really brought it all to life. The reader truly feels the full impact of this monumental event--the first of its kind. Overall, I'd recommend it to European history lovers everywhere.

Of Thomas Reese's three books explaining the inner workings of the Catholic church, this was the least rivetting, and would appeal only to the narrow audience curious about the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB). Reese covers key personalities of the NCCB, how it has dealt with various controversies, and how it actually functions in practice. Readers unfamiliar with Reese's style ought to begin with his 1989 "Archbishop" or his 1996 "Inside the Vatican."

Reese argues that the NCCB fulfills many important functions and (if the Vatican would loosen the reins) could fulfill many further purposes. Yet, the NCCB's political lobbying has had no impact (e.g., capital punishment and abortion). Questions of doctrine and church practice are decided in Rome, leaving nothing for the NCCB to decide. As an example of a function for which the NCCB is ideal, Reese points to the task of translating the liturgy from Latin into English, but even here the NCCB was overruled by the Vatican, which objected to gender-neutral English and did not appreciate how offensive it is for American ears when "he/him" is used to refer to both genders.

For this reader, it's hard to escape the conclusion that the NCCB is an organization in search of a function, in spite of Reese's careful arguments to the contrary.
