This is one of the simplest, humblest collections of sermons I have ever read! Very practical and very insightful to the human condition and struggle on the path to loving God and giving up all for Him. It is a basic spiritual textbook of experiential, real Christian devotion. I carry it around with me since the sermons are relatively brief and can be easily read in a spare moment. Inspiring!!

As a student of Manny Parzen at Stanford Grace Wahba worked in the area of reproducing kernel Hilbert Space and cubic spline smoothing. Basically splines are special flexible functions that can be used to fit regression functions to date without assuming a linear or fixed degree polynomial. It is the pasting together of local polynomial functions (e.g. cubic functions) where the polynomial changes definitions at a set of points called the knots of the spline. To maintain a smoothness to the function the constraints are placed on the derivatives of the splines at the knors. This is intended to give them continuity and smoothness at the points of connection.

In this monograph Grace Wahba describes how to construct and fit such splines to data. In so doing smoothness, goodness of fit and ability ot predict are the important attributes. Appropriate loss functions with smoothness constraints are used in the fit. The number and location of the knots can be fixed or it can ve determined based on the sample data. It is important to note that to determine whether the spline is a goof predictor techniques such as cross-validation are required.

Man! Those were exciting days. I had no idea what kind of shenanigans those research guys got up to until I read this book. And FUNNY! I'll never look at a solid surface the same again.

I am a first-grade teacher in Palo Alto, California. When I was first interested in experimenting with student-led parent conferences, I came across this book and found it to be a wonderful resource. It was extremely easy to read, and it was full of great ideas for ACTUALLY IMPLEMENTING student-led conferences in my own classroom. I especially appreciated the many real-life classroom examples, taken from the author's own experiences. I now incorporate student-led parent conferences as part of my program, and the parents love it!! I can't recommend this book enough for any teacher interested in student-led parent conferences.

This book, although now quite dated serves a good portion of food for your brain. Essasys look at different aspects of science fiction from writing technique, story telling and at a few unknown authors.

I usually find most theory books dull, and a chore to read through. But as I am an avid Science Fiction reader I found almost all the essays approachable. Many books I've read were discussed and so opened new doors to me for re-reading them. Discussing Science Fiction in a literary fashion should help to promote the cause that Science Fiction is real fiction.

Work such as the creation of new words in British Science fiction, the role of Utopia, and so on. Each is written by a different author and are usually well footnoted and researched.

If you're a Science Fiction fan, but don't enjoy reading theory books, this one might surprise you.

Holden Village is perhaps the most remote retreat center in the contiguous 48 States. It was built as a mining village by the Howe Sound Corportation of Seattle and operated as one of the largest copper mines in the United States from 1937 to 1957. This book tells the story of how the mining village was donated to the Lutheran church and how it became a retreat center. The book chronicles the philosophy of Holden and how the village strives to find God and His presence in our daily lives. If you are interested in finding out more about a community with no phones, no television, and no radio, this book will give you a nice introduction at a very reasonable price.

This book sets up the techniques and strategies for undergraduate writing center training.

I use the Harris book with our campus handbook and in-center observations to acculturate and train the writing across the disciplines writing assistant trainees for the WAC program and center that I direct.

Nothing else has the specificity and breadth of information!
