The friendliest book of poetry I've ever read

Walter Schindler's book of poems, "The Napoleon House," has pleased me for nearly a decade now. While I wouldn't call Schindler's poems revolutionary or staggeringly original, I would call them friendly, warm, touching, and real. Each poem drips with the feeling that Schindler poured his life into each one, driving himself to find the absolutely right image, mood, and word. This is exactly the kind of poetry utterly missing from the academic poets, who see this sort of heart-on-the-sleeve virtuosity as hopelessly outdated. This attitude is directly analagous to those who believe that sculpture since August Rodin means anything (which, in my humble opinion, it doesn't: obscurity and a refusal to even attempt to communicate with one's society have never made for good art: even T.S. Eliot believed he was speaking to the world, and not his own private circle.) Schindler is attempting to make each poem matter, to make each poem memorable, and to strike the lightning from the heavens with each attempt. He doesn't fully succeed with each try, but who does? Even Yeats and Whitman have their dogs. I especially love the sense of dialogue Schindler has with his readers: at one point, in a little comic interlude, he tells us to go away, find somebody to make love, and to live poetry rather than read it. All in all, a charming, unpretentious book that should be far better known than it is.

Jefferson was a Prophet. This document proves it.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-06
In 36 pages this document, whether in Spanish or English, confirms the truth of America's Founder's prophetic wisdom contained in his letter to Samuel Kercheval, January 19, 1810: "but a short time elapsed after the death of the great reformer of the Jewish religion, before his principles were departed from by those who professed to be his special servants, and perverted into an engine for enslaving mankind, and aggrandising their oppressors in Church and State..."

Every true American concerned about the high crimes condoned by Congress, not the least of which is their "blind eye" turned toward our exposed border and flood of illegal aliens, can buy "The National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry" and read a specific and enumerated stratagem for promoting illegal immigration to "take back" that which the U.S. Conference of Roman Catholic Bishops instructs was stolen from the ancestors of their faithful from Latin America: Our Land.

Rome has organized an invasion. The document for sale here should bolster every patriot with the knowledge that Our Whig Founders were in fact Prophets bequeathing us "The New Secular Order," "Annuit Coeptis," and "E Pluribus Unum" as shibboleths not to be violated by that which they knew to be "the real Anti-Christ."

do you know how peacekeepers negotiate?
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-08
If you want to find out about the role of negotiation in today's world, and its place in conflict then this book will tell you more. It highlights the everyday approach to negotiation in the field, as well as larger perspectives from organisations such as the UN. I like the way in which it explains the problems and dilemmas faced by aid workers, soldiers or any other peacekeeper when trying to negotiate on the ground...few books examine this task and relate it to the real world. Easy to follow, thought provoking, it brings a new perspective to an area dominated, too much, by business books.

A state-of-the-art of numerical methods applied to neutrons
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-16
This book presents the contributions of many scientists working on different fields of condensed-matter research that employ the many available neutron scattering techniques. In the present day neutron sources and spectrometers have evolved to a high degree of sophistication, but the data analysis is still lacking a solid background. Numerical analysis techniques must evolve to provide such anwers, and this book shows how the scientific community is giving a step ahead in the right direction.

A treasure chest for the poetry lover
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-19
You probably haven't heard of any of the poets collected in this exciting anthology. That's okay. They publish their poems in little literary journals and their books are mostly published by obscure presses. Most of these poets haven't published more than one book. I'm pretty familiar with contemporary poetry, but the majority of the writers collected here were unknown names to me.

Now I know their names, and better than that, I know their poems. My life is fuller, and I'm grateful to Michael Collier for creating such a diverse and vibrant collection. There is truly something for just about everyone here, from the lover of the bizarre and experimental to the traditionalist yearning for poets who know what meter is (there's not much rhyming, though).

Where do you start with a book like this? You could just dip in somewhere at random and see what you find; with this collection, you're probably going to pull out a moment of wonder no matter which page you flip to. If you've got to start somewhere, check out Olena Kalytiak Davis -- she's one of the most amazing poets alive, I think, and Collier has collected some brilliant recent work which didn't make it into her book And Her Soul Out of Nothing. But maybe you prefer something a little less daring for your first try -- check out the amusing, thought-provoking poems by Roger Fanning, written with perfectly accessible diction and syntax. You'd certainly like the poems by Richard Blanco, for I've shown his work to a number of very different people, all of whom liked it very much. If you want something which makes you feel like you're really reading cutting-edge poetry, check out D.A. Powell -- you'll have to hold the book sideways to read his poems. Don't miss Nick Flynn's "Bag of Mice" or Adrienne Su's "I Can't Become a Buddhist", or Campbell McGrath's wonderful "Capitalist Poem #36", which begins, "We've got this cheese down here to give away,/ tens of thousands of pounds of cheese."

The New American Poets was published in celebration of the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference's 75th anniversary, and I can't think of a better tribute to the conference which has played such an important role in the lives of many of the greatest poets in the U.S. than this anthology, a wonderful gift to all readers of poetry.

Design as an economic theory. Hope for the future.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1996-08-19
The 90's have been called the Decade of Design and to many the Decade of Design as and economic theory is the hope for America to once again surface as the pre-eminent economic leader in the world. Design is once again showing the way for America's future as the business community gains an understanding of the significance of design to the quality of life. The New Business of Design discusses the importance of design as an economic theory and challenges America's schools, economists, business community and political leaders to demonstrate leadership so that America can move into the next century demonstrating that the quality of life and standard of living is enhanced through design

Fur Trade History is Flourishing!!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-27
This book presents the latest scholarship on a wide variety of topics in the lively field of fur trade history. By making available many of the best papers presented at the Halifax conference, this book brings to a broad audience the research of scholars young and old who have studied several important aspects of what may fairly be described as one of the fundamental themes in early North American history. Topics range from biographies to economic, social, and cultural history. This book demonstrates that the field is alive and well, and that fur trade history can certainly offer important materials for students and teachers of American or Canadian history.

Essential to the New Jersey hiker
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-04
Every serious New Jersey hiker must have this book. Full trail descriptions with full-color maps. Notes on geology, history, hiking tips. A good index and Jack Fagan has contributed many excellent sketches.

This is now a companion guide to the equally indispensable New York Walk Book: A Companion to the New Jersey Walk Book for New York hikers. Be sure you get the 2nd edition of the New Jersey Walk Book: A Companion to the New York Walk Book, which was released in 2004 and is substantially revised from the 1st edition released in 1988. (The 1988 edition is often still available and has some historical value; see New Jersey Walk Book.)

It is worthwhile checking the New York New Jersey Trail Conference website before undertaking any major hike in the region. The trails and access points don't stop changing just because a guidebook has been published.

The "Walk Book" was originally published in 1923 by the National Geographic Society; the next four editions were published by Doubleday; and the sixth and later editions have been published by the NYNJTC. The first five editions included trails in both New York and New Jersey. In 1988, the "Walk Book" was published by the NYNJTC and split in two, the New York version was called the 6th edition, and the New Jersey version, the 1st edition.

The "New York Times" published an interesting article on May 19, 1998 by Glenn Collins on the history of the Trail Conference and the "Walk Book". It extracted several passages from the 1923 "Walk Book" (which now sells for around $200 if you can find a copy):

"For protection against rain, pure rubber clothing is about the only reliable material; but in warm weather or after exertion it is uncomfortably hot. . . ."

"Boots or stout leggings will save many a bruised shin or ankle or torn stocking and trouser leg. Breeches for women, long worn in the Western outing clubs, are becoming more in vogue in the East and sensibly so. There are combinations of breeches with detachable skirts which are convenient for travel to and from the country or where city or country yokels may stare. . . ."

"A pack on the back is bound to cause heavy perspiration and wetting between the shoulder blades. Reed frames have been devised to hold the pack off the back and give circulation or air. . . ."

"Paper is as effective a protection against wind as leather, and many trampers regard a paper waistcoat, costing 50 cents, as indispensable for blustery weather. . . ."

"If you are ever out with Malcomson he will introduce his big Bermuda onion. You will crave a thick slice and you will never go tramping again without one. It adds horse power to one's legs after luncheon. . . ."

Things have changed a bit since 1923, but the trails are still a major benefit of living in this area.

A reexamination of Griesbach
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.

Not simply a reexamination of the Griesbach / Two-Gospel theory, but a shaking to the foundations of Q and Markan priority. These 20 papers offer insights that would alter quite radically the dating of the Synopitcs and reassert traditional Matthean priority.
