A very strong book on semantic representations
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-01
With the increasing interest in semantic annotations (RDF and other applications lately advocated by Tim Berners-Lee, the "founder" of the web), it's useful to look at the research literature to see what people have been doing with "conceptual structures" for the past 4 decades.

Since the early days of AI, many scientists have grappled with the issues of knowledge representation. This book and its predecessors cover a conference on exactly that issue. Unlike some other treatments which I find to be either too theoretical or too pragmatic, this one covers just the right level of abstraction and practicality.

I references this and similar works in the design of the semantics annotation systems at Microsoft that will be seen in upcoming products.

Tenth International Conference on Cold Fusion (ICCF10)
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-08
This proceedings includes papers that were presented at the 10th International Conference on Cold Fusion held in Cambridge, MA, in August 2003. Following the initial announcements by Martin Fleischmann and Stan Pons in 1989 of an excess heat effect in electrolysis experiments with PdD, both theoretical and experimental work has been pursued by scientists seeking to understand the excess heat and related phenomena. Similarly, following the announcement of Steve Jones of low-level nuclear emissions from TiD, scientists have continued to explore the effect. Recent results in these areas and other areas were reported in more than 90 proceedings papers included in this proceedings. Topics reported on include: [1] experiments on excess heat, calorimetry, correlation of excess heat and helium, laser-induced excess heat; [2] tritium production; [3] transmutation, including elemental and isotopic anomalies, the Iwamura experiment, and other observations; [4] nuclear emissions from metal deuterides; [5] theory.

The conference was very strong technically. Because of the success of this conference, DoE conducted a review of cold fusion in 2004.

Glowing Dark
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-22
While many readers may find Richard Burgin's work disturbing, there is no doubt he is a master storyteller. Each word and phrase is carefully crafted and compels the reader forward. Often the endings do not seem to resolve much, rather they seem to hurl you into darkness, spinning and twirling, disoriented, and awash in loneliness, with an eerie sense of "it's not over yet." But if you are confident enough to regain your footing and if you appreciate the glow of exquisite writing, then don't deny yourself these stories.

Women in particular may have a hard time finding Burgin palatable, as his work is often about male strangeness, lurking emotional twists, and implied violence. But for those women wanting to explore the dark psyche of disturbed men, and the motives of female characters who interact with them, it can be eye-popping and intellectually stimulating.

Even trying to review Burgin's work can be daunting. The stories vary widely in content. The characters are complex. And the endings often leave you feeling uneasy. (Maybe that's why there aren't many reviews here on Amazon. I'd love to hear from others.) Bottom line, however, this is superb writing. Don't miss out. I echo Floyd Skloot; it's no wonder he won five Pushcart Prizes.

An excellent review by Julia Gordon-Bramer of Burgin's other recent short story collection "The Identity Club" can be found online at nighttimes.

"Divide each problem into as many parts as possible."
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-22
This Cartesian principle resonates throughout Gill's narrative about the violence in Northern Ireland, as he represents the many competing forces in the battle to control Northern Ireland. Catholic Provo extremists are bent upon assassinating Ian Paisley, a self-annointed Protestant minister and firebrand Loyalist intent upon establishing his own absolute right to rule Ulster. Paisley's security staff in Belfast, equally bloodthirsty and equally irrational, have their own plans for payback to the Catholic minority and their supporters in the south.

The official governments of the two parts of Ireland have their own interests, not always consistent with those of the extremists on both sides, and the British further complicate the issue. The police of both areas operate independently, and some high officials are actively in cahoots with leaders of various factions. Into this vividly described maelstrom, comes Supt. Peter McGarr of the Garda Siochana, as he investigates the seemingly unrelated death of a rugby star.

With the most powerful opening section Gill has ever written, this novel stands apart from the rest of the McGarr series and easily holds its own as an independent novel. Though the characters usually associated with McGarr do make some minor appearances, the narrative's strength lies not with the Garda but with the vividly portrayed characters involved in the political unrest. McGarr himself does not even appear in the novel until p. 65.

Readers unfamiliar with the complexities of the troubles in Northern Ireland may find it a bit difficult to keep track of who's who and who's on which side, and even the participants don't always know, as people frequently cross borders and change alliances. This is a stunning novel, however, with an ending as complex as the conflicts themselves. With no humor to disguise the violence and sadness afflicting the Six Counties, Gill writes this one "straight." Mary Whipple

Conference with the Dead

Lamsley is amazing.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-20
I first discovered Lamsley's fiction when he was printed in the old DAW's Year's Best Horror edited by the late Karl Wagner. The story that I initially read was truly unique and exhibited a style and a voice and a point of view that was completely new. So I did not hesistate to purchase CONFERENCE WITH THE DEAD as soon as I learned of it.

I was not disappointed, and the years between my discovery of his work and the appearance of this collection have not diminished my impression. Lamsley's stories are just as I recalled them. His is a singular voice with a style unlike that of any of his contemporaries. His stories are extremely well executed, and very, very disturbing.

I look forward to his next collection.

Really helpful spiritual classic

I must admit that John Cassian is one of my favourite spiritual writers so I wasn't surprised to find that I enjoyed this collection of his conversations as well. The main reason I rate it so high is that it is better value than any of the other editions which are available. I do recommend any of John Cassians writings that you can get hold of, and at the price this is probably the best edition at the moment of this particular work.

Conference On Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, AKA The Claims Conference
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-24
Marilyn Henry has written a clear and concise overview with sensitivity to so many conflicting issues over too many years. It is amazing to think that, in 1952, Jewish leaders realized the need to sit at a negotiating table, across from representatives of a country that was successful at destroying the fabric of Jewish life throughout the world.
Although questions and concerns still arise about the activities of this unique organization, reparations and restitution, especially in the former East Germany, would not have been possible without those individuals who had the foresight and fortitude to persevere. A precedent has been established for which the world should be grateful. I write this to honor the memory of my cousin, Dr. Rudolph Callmann, who participated in the formation of the Claims Conference.
