This work on Bill Bright and the historical survey of Campus Crusade for Christ reflects a fair and balanced and historically accurate account of this important evangelical personality and movement. Much of the inner workings of the early years are explored in vivid detail. The battle between fundamentalism and evangelicalism pits Bill Graham against Bob Jones University. Bill Bright is forced to choice sides. This crisis moment, one of many throughout the history of this organization, is perfecftly set by the author in the crucible of the early emergence of evangelicalism. Though the book is about CCC and Bill Bright, it is properly subtitled "The Renewal of Evangelicalism in Postwar America" for in this work the reader catches the continual struggles, victories and setbacks for CCC as a microcosm of the entire movement, especially for parachurch organizations. Some of the historical narative in this work follows closely other biographies on Bill Bright. But this is the first histography to actually disclose both the good and the bad, the positive and the negative, with balance and objective historicity. Other biographical works have function as propoganda for CCC (Amazing Faith, I Found It). On the flip side, articles from Protestant liberal magazines on one end and fundamentalist (hear Bob Jones University Press) on the other end, have both presented Bill Bright as the antichrist, a tyrannt and heretic. Nice balance, good understanding of the 50s, 60s and 70s, allowing the reader, even if from more recent birth, to put their minds around the times. As the evangelical 70s receives appropriate historical evaluation, this work will serve as a model approach to the individuals and the organizations that comprise evangelicalism.

I was looking for a good book on bioaerosols and Bioaerosols: Assessment and Control was recommended to me by several fellow members of the American Indoor Air Quality Council. I already owned the first publication (1989) by ACGIH Guidelines for the Assessment of Bioaerosols in the Indoor Environment. Bioaerosols: Assessment and Control is by far the best book on the assessment of bioaerosols on the market today. I highly recommend it to any professional looking for information on the subject. The book is technical but easy to read and easy to find what you are looking for. I gave it to our Infection Control Department and the Microbiology Department to preview. Both departments were equally impressed with the book. I ended up giving the book to Infection Control (because they kept borrowing it)and ordered another copy for our office. If you work with bioaerosols or in a health care facility you need this book. I am a safety officer/ industrial hygienist air monitoring for biological contaminates using the Air-O-Cells and Anderson samplers. This book has become my main source of information for biological monitoring.

Block and graft copolymers from wikipedia

Block Copolymers
A special kind of copolymer is called a "block copolymer". Block copolymers are made up of blocks of different polymerized monomers. For example, PS-b-PMMA is short for polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) and is made by first polymerizing styrene, and then subsequently polymerizing MMA from the reactive end of the polystyrene chains. This polymer is a "diblock copolymer" because it contains two different chemical blocks. You can also make triblocks, tetrablocks, multiblocks, etc. Diblock copolymers are made using living polymerization techniques, such as atom transfer free radical polymerization (ATRP), reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT), ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), and living cationic or living anionic polymerizations.

Graft copolymers

Graft copolymers are a special type of branched copolymer in which the side chains are structurally distinct from the main chain. The illustration (5) depicts a special case where the main chain and side chains are composed of distinct homopolymers. However, the individual chains of a graft copolymer may be homopolymers or copolymers. Note that different copolymer sequencing is sufficient to define a structural difference, thus an A-B diblock copolymer with A-B alternating copolymer side chains is properly called a graft copolymer.

For example, suppose we perform a free-radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of polybutadiene, a synthetic rubber, which retains one reactive C=C double bond per residue. We get polystyrene chains growing out in either direction from some of the places where there were double bonds, with a one-carbon rearrangement. Or to look at it the other way around, the result is a polystyrene backbone with polybutadiene chains growing out of it in both directions. This is an interesting copolymer variant in that one of the ingredients was a polymer to begin with.

As with block copolymers, the quasi-composite product has properties of both "components". In the example cited, the rubbery chains absorb energy when the substance is hit, so it is much less brittle than ordinary polystyrene. The product is called high-impact polystyrene, or HIPS.

The story is finally told....

Review Date: 2002-03-29
"Catholic Women's Colleges in America" finally addresses a notable gap in women's history, American educational history, and Catholic educational history. From the last third of the 1800's, congregations of Catholic religious women - nuns - created more than 225 institutions of higher learning for women. Numerous generations of women (and later men) were educated in these institutions. Because of the students' modest economic circumstances, many would not have received an education but for these institutions and these religious women. Recent histories of American higher education and Catholic higher education either ignore or pay only passing attention to the fact that more than half of all present-day Catholic colleges in the United States were formed by these women. The multiple authors of this edited book examine the colleges' history, importance, failings, and present challenges stemming from the steady disappearance of nuns from the American landscape. Along the way, and perhaps more importantly, they tell many of the individual stories of these religious women and their colleges. The chapters are well-written, and easily accessible to the lay reader. While my own judgment is that the religious character of these institutions is currently at more risk of disappearing than the editors allow, one cannot but be moved by the story, faith and determination of these religious women to educate women in the United States. Thanks to Schier and Russett for bringing this story to print.

LISTEN, LENNY, I STUDIED THIS CLOSELY A QUARTER CENTURY AGO

and still study it and find its definitions of just cause and just war (just reasons to go to war and just conduct in warfare) to be more crucial today than ever.

Sure, this was written when nuclear war with the USSR was promoted our greatest concern and reason for funding the warmakers. But now that we go through the latest reason for being in Iraq without yet getting the truth, we need to contemplate carefully this important document by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops of a generation ago. Nowadays they are too afraid of bankruptcy for the perversion of a few clergy to speak out as prophetically as we need right now today.

This document will bring you to the correct conclusion that no Catholic can go fight in Iraq, etc. There is no just reason for going to war and there is no just conduct of the war. Indiscriminate warfare in particular is condemned, yet the well respected British medical journal the Lancet, after a careful and dangerous comprehensive survey in the field estimates we have killed up to a million Iraqis. Just look at our genocide of Fallujah and targetting innocent civilians, mothers and children, attempting to flee our horror and our terrorizing their people.

Please get and study this book, now under a dollar, plus shipping. It reveals the theological and moral truths which absolutely condemn our current very profitable warmongering.

Then get anything by the Reverend Father John Dear, SJ, who is not afraid to speak theological truth to wordly powers and dominations.

This compilation of talks and poems given at the 1996 Women's Conference, sponsored jointly by Bringham Young University and the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, shows sisters reaching out with their hearts to do the work of the Lord in their homes and in their world.

The contributors discuss challenging situations they have faced, candidly describing the difficullties, heartaches and fears they have experienced. And they share the comfort, healing, and hope made possible through the love of Christ.
