This book effectively takes the reader from start to finish regarding the publishing process. Avery Cardoza is truly gifted in his ability to convey information.

Though some of the data needs to be updated, the overall content is solid and time tested.

Pertinent, enjoyable read.

Great Job, Cardoza!

This book has helped me to understand publishing and what it takes to start a company. Nothing is sugar-coated, and I really appreciated that. You learn where to go to get legally registered and how much everything will cost. When I went about starting my publishing company, everything was as Cardoza said it would be; no surprises. The book was interesting enough to be read within a couple of days, and it even had some humorous points. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the publishing business, or writers who are curious about the way it works. He covers publishing all the way from a mere idea to the finished product, and then he gives helpful insight on marketing and distribution. There are also some templates (for contracts and other things), and lists of people to contact in order to get your company listed (for writers to find you). There are a few typos, but the information is so well put-together that they aren't even an issue. I have no further publishing questions (at least not until I drastically expand my business) after reading this book. I can't praise it enough!

All the information you need.

Whether you're considering starting your own publishing company or you'd like to self-publish a book, this gives you absolutely all the information you could possibly need. From registering a company name and getting the ISBN to the actual layout and printing of the book, it's all there! I thought I'd have to buy several books to learn everything I'd need to do, but this ended up being the most comprehensive guide I could find. I ended up sending my book to a publisher instead of publishing it on my own, but my closest friend in the world used this book to start his business and he's been amazingly successful! Even if the edition is a few years old, it's suprisingly relevant and accurate. It's a great buy and I recommend it to anyone even thinking of self-publishing, starting a publishing business, or even just a career in publishing.

The only publishing resource you'll need! Great!

An upbeat and well-rounded introduction to publishing
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-04
Avery Cardoza's book about publishing is a little more complete than many of the others out there.
It isn't written for authors who self-publish, but for entrepreneurs who want to start a book publishing company, though it's helpful to both.
His tone is upbeat and encouraging. He's a successful publisher himself, and he shows you how he did it. He has an excellent chapter on finding your niche in the book market and on evaluating the profit potential of each area of book publishing. He has great credibility in this area.
Then he launches into the nuts and bolts of setting up your company, the company structure you want, and the investments you need to make, and what you can expect financially as you start out.
There's an excellent section on finding authors and ideas for books and turning them into profitable works. He shows how a small publishing company can leverage its advantage over larger companies and make a profit on books that they can't.
He discusses marketing, including the impact of your title and cover design, and has a great section on how to price your books.
There are several chapters on production and interior design that can help you as you work with printers and designers, or if you'd like to try to do the interior design yourself.
He wraps up the book with some nuts and bolts advice on running your business and improving your bottom line.
He deals with distribution and sales, and getting publicity, though he doesn't delve into publicity a lot. He also doesn't really discuss editing at all. There are some copyediting mistakes in the book which may make you reflect on how important copyediting perfection is to your bottom line. How many mistakes can you let get through and still have a profitable book?
I'd recommend other books to learn more about marketing, publicity, and editing.
He also has an interesting chapter on multimedia and software publishing and the great differences between that and book publishing.
Overall, a very well-rounded book that has some clear strengths that make it extremely valuable for a publishing entrepreneur.

The best thing I love about this book is the writing style of Prof. Freedman and how easily and clearly it can crystallize, the otherwise complex computer terminology, components and concepts. The explanations used here are vivid. I have owned a copy since 1997 and I have never been disappointed with anything that I needed to look up, for instance 'kludge' is described here as - "Also spelled 'kluge' and pronounced 'klooj'. A crude, inelegant system, component or program. It may refer to a makeshift, temporary solution to a problem as well as to any product that is poorly designed or that becomes unwieldy over time."

It will be hard to obtain better explanations than they are written in here.

There are several other similar Encyclopedias around which I have never looked at, because I had no need to look for another Encyclopedia.

A COMPREHENSIVE COMPUTER ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Unlike most other computer dictionaries/encyclopaedias in its class, the inclusion of a companion CD-ROM gave this "Computer Desktop Encyclopedia" a comfortable jump-start in the superiority contest.
The book (and its attached CD-ROM) covered, in the most definitive way, all the important terms and acronyms that apply to today's computer and networking technologies. Hardware, software, and allied peripherals were adequately represented.
It is descriptive and well-illustrated, and included all the commonly used file extensions. With over ten-thousand terms and definitions, its scope is rich: in comparison to what exist now.
This computer encyclopedia ranks among the best currently on sale. However, potential buyers may be frustrated (at the moment) by its limited availability.

And too bad it's out of print. While this book will not teach you how to use a PC, it will define every computer related (and often electronics) term you can imagine. I was surprised on some of the really obsecure terms this book contained that I didn't expect it to mention. I got this book used and after reading over some of it, I'd say this is a must have on any nerd's desk as the it compares up there with as good as an internet search for explanations of PC related terms.

I work people whose computer knowledge varies from very little to a serious computer user. This reference manual is one book that all levels can benefit from. This book is the perfect manual to answer the questions in an easy to understand format without all that technical jargon.

The book is over 1100 pages and is loaded with pictures and figures to give a visual representation of the definition which makes is easier to understand some of the concepts covered. There is computer definitions, vendor breakdowns, and certification analysis and application definitions.

Some of the topics covered are networking, computers, MACs and applications. Some of the technologies included are CISCO, CompTIA, ATM, FDDI, Ethernet and token ring. Also included is a cd-rom which has over 5000 more definitions not included in the book. Overall a great addition to my technical library.

I read Conspiracies and Secret Societies cover to cover. I found it to be fun and entertaining for the most part. However there were some examples that were frightening enough that I did further research and found them to be absolutely true. The book presents the topics in such a way that you can come to your own conclusions. There is no indication of "soap boxing" for any of the topics. There is referance information to do your own reseach on the entries. Highly recommended for those who want to know more...

Plenty "Politically Correct" Conspiracies
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-12
We read Brad Steiger's mystery books of the
late 1960's and early 1970's. They were
worthy paperbacks, not as wild, funny and
erratic as John Keel's works, but similar.

This book is much larger and extensive than
those:

CASS is a "FAT 500" book of many descriptions,
photo images and theories, that a reader can
use to grip and examine popular conspiracies and
associated personalities, perhaps to improve
conversations about the unusual or increase
adrenaline levels.

We commend Steiger on inclusion of

1. John Lennon, UFO researchers, Jonestown,
and George Wallace MURDERS, via possible MK
ULTRA, Manchurian Candidate, MI[56], MIB,
drug-affected mind control, cancer or other
Kontrol techniques.

2. Dr. Henry Kissinger (Master Spy, "Hank",
Dr. Strangelove) who, along with other Occult
Mind Control Advisors, seem always present in
the New World Order Rule and Reign of Terror.

3. Bankers, Bildebergers, Trilaterals

4. Interesting Individuals (NOT criminal) like
R. Steiner, Helen Blavatsky, Nikola Tesla and
Wilhelm Reich the Orgon Energy Explorer.

Certain vital essential clever conspiracies and
societies are conveniently MISSING:

1. World War Criminal financial elites who gather
TRILLIONS of Dollars/Rubles/Pounds/Francs/Marks
from Wars throughout the centuries, so the WWC's
acquire a vast mountain of Gold and Jewels with
which to "secure" their New World Order.

2. Chernobyl, a major nuclear disaster, at
the brink of a New World War, between Black and
White Races, perhaps a detour warning;
and the World NUCLEAR Movement with its nuclear
Occult practices: SuperUnNatural Forces, Evil
"Advanced Technology", the Mad Magic of Mad Humans.

3. Khazars, who have filled so many influential
positions in the US, UK and elsewhere are missing,
perhaps to ensure that CASS would be published.
Also the Syndicate, the ultimate of criminal
profitable conspiracy, is conveniently omitted,
as is much of its lesser partner in crime,
the Mafia (Italian-based rather than Russian-based).

4. Joe McCarthy receives only a mere mention,
even though McCarthy was perched on the rim of a
Massive Giant $Conspiracy$ just prior to his
possible murder in a US Naval hospital.

5. The KAL 007 passenger jet, downed by Soviet
military fighter, killing major conspiracy
activist (Dr. Larry McDonald) from the John
Birch Society, a so-called "right wing extremist"
group, previously mentioned in Steiger's books
as providing relevant material exposing World
Conspiracy, is omitted. CASS does describe
some of the JBS and other "extremist" groups.

6. Ted Owens, one of the greatest psychics and
forecaster Prophets of the 20th century never
receives a review. Mr. Owens was a Prodigy
equivalent to the Prophet Musa (Moses or Moshe).
Many UFO radicals and simple UFO witnesses came
under severe, sometimes deadly fire, especially
during the 1965-75 US/USSR/SE Asia War years.

7. CIA/KGB collusion, FBI/FSB familiars, NSA/NKVD
Nazie Commies are not hinted at.

(Telephone monitoring, harrassment, intimidation,
surveillance, other spy spooking, as experienced
by radicals and "extremists", can be quite real,
as in my case for the past 34+ years!)

8. Many Black Muslim deaths, disappearances and
"accidents" are not mentioned.

9. Interdimensional Intelligences mind-control
over People actions receive no theory.

10. Council on Foreign Relations (CFR),
Robert McNamara's "Whiz Kids" and RAND
"Think Tanks" are conveniently omitted, as are
Congressional/Judicial/Executive organised crime
links and networks.

Basically, Conspiracies is a good reference for
"politically correct" or "religiously correct"
conspiracies, if that's what you're looking for.

When You realise that some always portrayed as
"Criminal" or "The Devil" or "The Enemy"
are possibly Heroes and/or Scapegoats, then
You are getting getting deep into the stuff of
REAL Life Conspiracies and Secret Societies.

To remain Sane with CASS, perhaps Realise that
Each and Every Creature is really a Divine Being,
directly related to the Super Supreme Divine
Being, ALLAH or God, Who Loves and Cares for ALL
and Each of Us, as an Eternal Divine Family Member.

We give Conspiracies and Secret Societies THREE
out of FIVE, but hoped and expected better from
Mr. Steiger, as further progress in his
discoveries of hidden worldly ways of Human
society, over the past 50 years or more.

This book is great. If you have even the slightest interest in conspiracy theories, get this book. You won't be able to put it down (You may also not be able to go to sleep after reading this book). This book covers some of the lesser known conspiracy theories and secret socities such as Heaven's Gate, the Mothman, and many others. It also covers many of the classic conspiracy theories, such as men in black, roswell, area 51, and of course, the new world order. One thing I like about the book is that it gets to the point. It doesn't start out with "It was a clear day in Roswell, New Mexico. The wind was gently blowing, the kids were out playing, and the grass was greener than ever." Instead, it jumps right to what happened, starting out with something like "Something crashed in Roswell New Mexico. The goverment says it was a weather balloon, but many others think it was a UFO." Also, this book is very reliable, listing ALL its sources of information. So get this book!

Why are you still reading this review? Go to the top of the screen, and click the order button! Then, when it arrives, read it, then lose three days of sleep because this book WILL creep you out as well as entertain you for hours.

Oh my gosh, you're still reading this review! What part of push the order button don't you udnerstand?

Lydia Hiby is a phenomenon. This book about her experiences and process is fascinating. As we have had past and current clients (cats) in our family, this book answers questions that we just never got around to asking...and then some. If you are cynic, this probably won't change you mind (though it should). Highly recommended.

I have used Lydia's communicating services in helping my cats through behaviorial problems and even the death of a cat. I was anxious to read her book and when it arrived in the mail and I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. The stories are heartwarming and inspirational to all who love animals. I strongly recommend this book to every animal lover, who like myself, wishes to talk to animals.

A reintroduction to our first language.

What an awakening Ms Hiby's book provided me. She can help us all regain some basics from our earliest childhood. There's a whole world of communication and thought going on among the animals, and we miss most of it because we've grown up parroting what we were told..."they can't talk", "we don't really hear them". Well, fortunatly for me, Lydia Hiby in her simple, honest, and loving book, has reopened my mind and 'ears'. I DO remember talking with dogs and cats and cows and ducks and pigs when I was a little girl on my folks' farm. It was just part of life. That WAS my first language. Then I went to elementary school and all my focus was shifted to humans and what I now consider my second language...English. So, as I read her book and absorbed each additional example of the compassion, and understanding that the non-human creatures have of our limited and egocentric species, I remembered. The very simple awareness that reopens this 'hidden world' for us was pointed out by this lovely book, and generously shared by this talented author and communicator. I'm thankful and enriched.

Facinating and Awakening!

I got this book as a gift from a friend who had Lydia do a reading on her horse. I have always been facinated with anyone who can talk to the animals and was thrilled to find a section where I could learn how to do it! I had previously purchased "how to" video tapes and was very dissappointed to find that they had no instructional value and were just testimonials about the communicator. This book was a facinating read and a great guideline! My dog and I are most grateful!

A wonderful guide into the possibilities within all of us!

This book is written from the heart! The experiences are insightful and moving. It opens the mind to the potential within us to deepen our bond not only with our own companions, but with all animals on this planet. The techniques outlined are the building blocks to develop the "communicator" inside us all. Lydia and her book have opened a new world for me. She has dedicated her life to her gift and has inspired me to follow in her footsteps. Everyone has their own talent and path and none of us is perfect. It is through our humanity that we learn and grow every day. This book has made a monumental difference in my life and has taught me that all is possible if you come from a loving place in your heart!

Like the Janet Arnold books, this is a fabulous resource for research, pattern drafting, and even garment construction (although this is not sewing instruction manual)--many drawings show the details of historical fashions, which can guide us modern stitchers in how to replicate. Like the Arnold books, this is not a beginners' construction guide, but rather a research resource, which will provide some excellent drawings of period outfits. If one should just happen to be costuming "A Christmas Carol," this would be a splendid book to invest in.

Not only have I learned an amazing amount from this book, it has truly saved me from making very costly mistakes in selling vintage clothing. I adore period costume but good research books, especially when you are just beginning...are VERY hard to find. This book offers measurements, construction details and puts smaller accessories into context. Many times I would purchase a large box of antique clothing at auction that contained smaller items which would have me baffled. Countless times I find them in her illustrations. Pretty pictures are great, but her details will truly educate you. Thank you for this great reference. I wish you would do one entirely on personal accessories.

Now there are so many wedding planner books that all say the same thing, but this is by far the best and most informative book I read. There are so many stresses when planning a wedding and this book tells you what you have to do and when. You don't need to spend thousands on a wedding planner, all you need is this book. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone needing help on planning a wedding...and if you are planning a wedding, you know you need all the help you can get! This book if worth every penny! This book has the amazing ability to cover absolutely every thing you need to think of when planning a wedding and also walks you through the step by step process to making it a huge success. Other wedding planning books were a bit too "on the surface" giving me pointers that I had heard before or weren't realistic. The tips within this book, whether you are a bride on a budget, or have limitless funds, will show you how to add the special elements that make it your wedding. Joyce has managed to create a planning timeline that is realistic, not overwhelming, shows you how to be incredibly creative (even if at times you be creatively challenged) and makes planning your wedding an enjoyable process.

What a motivator! This book is jam-packed full of good advice for starting up your own art/craft-related business. In the midst of a major DIY and craft movement, this book is just the ticket for anyone who has ever thought, "Hey...I could do that."

As an graduate from a fine arts college, I left school feeling overwhelmed about how to make it on my own. Taxes, laws, startup, recordkeeping -- it was all a blur, too much to handle at the time. But now I have (almost) everything I need in one little handy book. And trust me, I had looked everywhere for a book like this.

The interviews are great offered me the most insight for starting up a business. Much of the marketing advice was pretty common sense to me, but might be helpful for those who have no idea where to start. And of course, the design of the book is wonderful. Pardon me for a moment for focusing on aesthetics, but the rounded corners and simple graphic design is very appealing!

I would actually be interested in seeing another volume of this book that would be entirely about legal issues and recordkeeping -- this is the area where most of my questions are, and Craft, Inc. just grazes the surface of it. It would be awesome to read a simple, no-nonsense guide to business and legal matters, written in the same clear and entertaining style of this book.

I ordered this book when I started teaching in an infant/toddler classroom. Despite my five years of college, I had little knowledge on what these little guys could do. This book has been an AWESOME resource. I love how the lessons are separated by age groups. It provides detailed explanations as well as additional information on why and how each activity is developmentally appropriate. Of the several books I ordered, this one is most professional and designed for teachers. I highly recommend it!

It is VERY nice book. Especially for medical students and residents.
You can understand from detail to basic of diseases. With this book, you know how to approach and make your list of differential diagnosis.
I worked for infectious disease patients for a while, and this book was very useful because you can get the general knowledge not only about infectious diseases but also general internal medicine, skin lesions, bone diseases, and so on. I especially recommend the chart of antibiotics(Chart 37). I like this book because we can also get the update etiology of diseases. So nice.

This book packs in all the important aspects of client treatment into each section. The headings are a little hard to see when skimming, but the information is excellent. A must have for Nurse Practitioner school!

It is a very good and useful book. It has everything you'd want in it plus more. It includes the signs and syptoms, what you can do to treat the problem, etc. I just wish that it had pictures in it so you could have more to go off of.

Should be considered a thoroughly user friendly and instructive 'Tax Bible' for every small business owner

We hear a lot about corporate taxes during this current political season. The average federal and state tax rate of small businesses is around 35%. But what is not generally known is that through the advantages of legal tax deductions most companies do not pay anywhere near that amount of tax assessment on their general revenues. Where it was once necessary to employ a top flight tax attorney, now anyone starting up an entrepreneurial venture in the form of a small business can take full and lawful advantage of all their tax deductions associates with start-up expenses, operating expenses, health and medical related expenditures, retirement commitments, as well as costs associated with entertainment, meals, travel, inventory, equipment, operating a home office, and so much more. They key to all this is "Deduct It!: Lower Your Small Business Taxes" by tax attorney and specialist Stephen Fishman. Now in a newly updated and expanded fourth edition, "Deduct It!" should be considered a thoroughly user friendly and instructive 'Tax Bible' for every small business owner wanting to steer clear of the IRS while taking full and legal advantage of every appropriate (and profitable) tax deduction allowed by law.

as a beginer, it was a smooth informative read

i just started (well just INCORPORATED) my catering business. i found this book to be written in an accessible and unintimidating style. Fishman goes to great lengths to give examples, cite external sources for additional information, and generally uncomplicates the IRS jargon. now only if i had read this 6 months ago, i would really be ahead of the game!

So simple to understand, excellent examples

I read this book after forming a C-Corp in California (using the Nolo guide). Although I am familiar with many biz deductions, this book walks you through many examples of deductions you can take if you plan ahead. I really like the "Day in the Life of..." examples of how you can maximize legal deductions pertaining to mileage. There's an excellent section on home office deductions. My husband, a self-admitted dummy when it comes to expense reports, taxes, etc., picked up the book after I was done, and even he understands the concepts. Already he has found deductions for his sole proprietorship and non-reimbursed employee biz expenses. Great value and so easy to understand. Highly recommend.

Highly readable and informative

This book is a must small business owners because it can improve their bottom line. Although it provides fairly good overview of tax deudctions, it should not be used as a comprehensive reference for tax professionals.

The book is a relatively light read in a highly readable format. Each tax deduction has a good overview and a case example to boot. It isn't, however, an answer to complex tax questions which the book willingly acknowledges should be taken to a tax professional. For most business owners, this book should be sufficient for most of the tax deduction questions they may have. This book certainly answered all of mine.

The book provides valuable information on the probability of an IRS audit (don't form sole proprietorship if you want to avoid an audit) and how one can minimize one's chances of an audit.

Great book!

Great book. Just one comment. A lot of the text in this book is identical to the text in Tax Deductions for Professionals. You don't need both books; choose one.
