Tantalizing introductionReview Date: 2008-10-18
I'll try again. Results, when they work, are just too seductive. This book gives clear and specific directions - maybe too specific some times. Perhaps I really do need 108 links for some project. Not 110 or 106. But perhaps my materials didn't meet the under-1% precision requirement. Well, if you already know the techniques that the authors assume, you'll read past the over-fussy bits.
I'm just carping, though. This book really stands out. Directions are utterly clear, and nicely illustrated. Admittedly, a bare beginner might struggle, but this book never meant to address that reader. Given hard covers, the spiral binding lies flat easily, or stands open where you opened it. Illustrations really illustrate the techniques - even without pliers in hand, you might feel yourself following along. Projects range across a wide span of skill levels, but this gives no indication which are which. That's OK. These authors address a readership that understands what the words mean and that can rank themselves honestly against the demand each project places on the reader.
I can't wait to get started.

The best book for handmade chainsReview Date: 2008-07-05
These chains are not soldered; they are fused and woven. I recommend you have at least a semester of college level jewelry or several years of soldering under your belt before jumping in with this one. But it worthwhile if you want to make chains that are worthy of royalty, or have a chain for a piece of art jewelry that will do it justice.
This is a workbook, progressing from the simplest and easiest to progressively more complex chains. After the first couple hundred fused links you become pretty adept. After fusing the links, you will learn to weave links into patterns. These are not your ordinary chains. They are strong, beautiful and flexible.
Jean is obsessively precise in her work, so this book is very precise. She goes over what gauges work for which patterns, as well as all the little tips that make a chain look superb. It's a lovely book, very well-written and one to be included in a goldsmith's library.
To get a better idea of the creativity and precision of this lady's work, go to Randy Smith's website: http://www.rocksmyth.com/ and look for Jean Stark's work. Prepare to be amazed at all the lovelies and realize that pictures do not do her work justice, as good as the pictures are. Many of the chains are made with 30 ga. wire, which is not much thicker than sewing thread. Her chains feel like silk.
If you're serious about making fine quality chains, then you need this book. Jean Stark is the guru.

Best Money We Ever Spent Review Date: 2008-02-16
"De-clutter" is a regular drumbeat that goes through this whole book, and we seriously did that. The result was that nearly all of our potential buyers commented on how clean the house was. Well yes, it was clean, but the appearance from the de-cluttering was more important in causing the look of cleanliness.
A psychological plus for us: after the staging, the house was now just a house, no longer our beloved home. That may sound negative, but it helped us see a low offer for the house not as an insult, but just as a starting point in negotiating for this object. We could be much more objective in the selling process.
Was this book responsible for four offers on the house in one week? Can't know, but we're sure it helped. Also, We thought enough of this book that we recommended it to our real estate agent after the house sold, for her other clients who might need it.

Building Bridges of Understanding Review Date: 2008-11-22

A Deadly MisunderstandingReview Date: 2008-11-13
About a year ago, I took him to a three hour study providing some of the material from this book, namely Jesus in the Koran. What I originally thought would help my new student understand more about Jesus, opened my eyes to what could become a very significant bridge to Muslims, teaching them of Isa (Jesus) from their own Holy Book the Koran.
Recently, I was told that "A Deadly Misunderstanding" was out, I purchased it and could not put it down. I talk to everyone about this and now have something in print I can give to them.
I am an evangelical, Bible thumping, born again, Christian as is Mark. But this information has opened my eyes to what I knew all along. That namely, we were missing something to bridge to the Muslim people, but I just did not realize what.
Muslims have become excited that we would even consider reading the Koran and many of them have no idea what it really says. Further, there are things in our Bible that confuse them. This book will help you understand that issue for Muslims.
I can now only hope that Obama, unknowningly today, may provide a Spiritual opportunity to build the bridge between Muslims and Christians (Followers of Christ)by allowing Mark and others to receive more open doors to teach Isa (Jesus) from the Koran and point out the misunderstandings Muslims have about our Bible.
A Spiritual answer is the only answer to stop the battles between east and west. These will only become worse unless we teach them what their own Holy Book says.
Don't miss reading this book. It may be the most important book you will read in your lifetime. It could be a world changer of significance with help from our God.

More hip hop facts than you could ever rememberReview Date: 2008-08-26
Though this is an essential encyclopedia of hip hop factoids, it sure doesn't read like your typical reference book. The Ego Trip humor shines through, making this a book that's interesting, informative, and hilarious. Even after you've read it cover to cover, you'll still enjoy picking it up and flipping to a random page on occasion. I learned a lot about some of the old school hip hop I missed out on, and even more about the artists and songs I grew up with. You may not agree with some of the opinions expressed in this book, but you'll definitely be amazed at all the information.
A must have for hip hop heads!Review Date: 2008-06-10
however... the opinions of the book ARE DATED...
This book was published in 1999, and so if you weren't into hip hop by then, then some of the lists will strike you oddly (I myself would ask what about Kanye? The Game? Lil Wayne? Bun B? Ludacris???... until I saw the publishing date, lol)
