Invaluable, Well Presented InformationReview Date: 2008-08-29
I bought this book thinking that I did not have a whole lot to learn from it. I was certain I had read enough 'better coding' material in the past to know what good code was and how to produce it. I am sure you will not be surprised when I say that I ended up having a great deal to learn from this book.
Almost all of the coding advice, design strategies, and debugging techniques are backed up with real research data. At the very least, this means that even if you know the advice is sound already, you can more easily introduce the topic to other programmers, or even to management, and it has a greater chance of being taken in to consideration.
After reading this book, my code quality has definitely increased. I discovered that even the good practices I knew of before were not being put to effective use.
The book is very specific. It does not typically give you vague advice that sounds good if you don't think too hard about it. It gives you very specific, concrete advice, with examples and data to back it up.
The author seems to have put a great deal of effort into writing this book for every type of programmer (and even for people in software management positions). Every chapter introduction describes who should definitely read the chapter and who might benefit from simply skimming it over. He will also direct the reader to other chapters or specific sections of the current chapter based on the reader's knowledge and experience levels.
Finally, as others have said, I consider this a must read book for any programmer.

I bought this book for my teenage son who is a MythBusters junkie. He is a math genius and loves science too. He absolutely loves to read this book for fun. I know that some day the information contained in it will come in handy, so for this mom, that is a bonus.
I highly recommend this book to everyone. You never know when it will come in handy. It is amazing how they can put so much information into a book that is so small.

Recommended - with ReservationsReview Date: 2008-11-28
My reservations - There are several chapters which would be of use primarily to those who are either independently wealthy, or who may at least decide to forego their building of an indoor heated pool in order to drop a few large bills on a firearm or two.
I remember an act in which the comedian, Steve Martin, said that he was going to share the secrets of his new book, 'How To Live Like A Millionaire'. His advice - "First, get a million dollars.." In a similar vein, a number of the suggestions in this book are useful if one has a sizable budget with much room for discretionary spending. For those with modest means, and who are raising a family, some of the recommendations are beyond impractical.
And although here, I venture out of the realm of pure objectivity, I must say that my second reservation is of a personal nature, that is, whether I wish to help the author reach greater financial success based on the quite insufferable degree of arrogance displayed in his 'Javelin Press' webpage concerning efforts to contact him. Although an indisputably talented writer, his opinion of himself and the value of his time is, sadly, inflated to a degree which passes beyond the mere word 'unpleasant'. When I first read this book, I had every intention of following it up with ordering 'Molon Labe', but after seeing the condescending wording of the notes on the website, I have decided to instead order works by other authors who seem more appreciative of those who purchase their books.
Thus - I would rate the book itself at a four, but would perhaps not recommend buying it based on the author's attitude toward his readers. Perhaps if one bought it used, through the Amazon Marketplace, it would be a good investment.
A valuable guide for any modern civil rights advocateReview Date: 2008-11-17
Even if you're as yet undecided as to your support in the fight for freedom this is a valuable read, as while it focuses on the practical, it also has some philosophical arguments that strip away the sophistry of the socialist left.
Last revised in 2002, this book is overdue for a new edition, if for no other reason than all the prices and the bulk of the URLs are hopelessly out of date.
I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in the realpolitik confronting the patriotic U.S. citizen.

Awesome book on liberty, guns, self protection, dealing with the antigun liberal psychos Review Date: 2008-08-16
You cannot go wrong with BTP. He's right for every FREEDOM LOVING person in the U.S. If you are a Liberal and are against anyone except the police and military having guns, then you are going to find yourself very much abused in this book for being already enslaved and under control of other people who think they know what is best for you, regardless of what you think about it.
I must emphasize one very outstanding focus BTP makes in this book. He has a fully detailed section for Women and how they need to protect themselves. He helps with gun selections and other protective means.
Lastly, he gives you resource referral information on where to go to get what, things to watch (videos, movies), books to read, and important names/addresses/contact info, website addresses, etc.,on other resources including within the government. This is a super resource and learning book that is very timely in this day and time when it looks like we may be faced with some kind of issues in self protection/survival from terrorists, bad governmental agents, or people who want to bring you and your family harm. It will lift your "Freedom Loving" spirits in showing you how YOU can survive and how you MUST protect yourself and your family. I find myself picking it up and rereading here and there all the time. It is almost a daily thing to review something or some section in my Gun Bible and get Boston's views on it again. I found this as one of the best ever books I've ever owned and it is definitely very inspirational to this old Constitutionalist who feels that his freedoms are slipping out from under him very fast in this day and time.

An increadible Guide to the Star Trek Universe, but outdated...Review Date: 2007-11-07
You have to realize this fact before buying this Encyclopedia is that it was made in 1999.It's been 9 Years.Alot of History has happened in Star Trek since then and if you don't realize this now, you'll be disapointed to discover that to information about Deep Space Nine's last Season, the last 2 Seasons of Voyager,The whole of Enterprise and Star Trek Nemesis. All of this information is non-exsistant.And just imagine the frustration of people who actually owned this book through the years and reread it wishing it had all this wealth of new information.I honestly can't comprehend why Pocket Books would not release the Book with all of this missing information availible.Or make a CD-Rom of it.
This might sound like I'm ragging on the Book, but that would be impossible to do.Wiether or not this info is in this paticular Book doesn't really matter, because it extensively covers in scrutinizing detail of all the Series up to Deep Space Nine Last Season,Voyager's last 2 Seasons, the whole of Enterprise and Star Trek Nemesis. And believe me you'll be more than satisfied with that alone.
So,most definately buy this now and enjoy it and you will. But just realize it's outdated and once you do that then you can truely enjoy this Encyclopedia the way the Publisher intended you enjoy it:with wonderment and fun.
Outstanding, but an update is overdue!Review Date: 2007-06-16
There have also been events such as the Paramount auction of all the series and movie paraphernalia since then, and that could be a chapter all by itself.
I came on Amazon today expecting to see a new and updated version for sale, and was disappointed that the old edition is still all that's available.
Michael and Denise Okuda know everything there is to know about ST, and are the perfect people to update this. If I were shopping today for the first time I would say wait for the new edition, but buy a used paperback 1999 just to see what it's all about.
Keeping my fingers crossed that someone sees the demand for an updated version!

The law demystifiedReview Date: 2008-11-20
This book is also the first place where economics and politics are clearly put in their correct sequence; therefore it should be required reading for all politicians. More importantly, if a sufficient number of individuals in a country were to read this book, they'd throw out 90% of all laws and legislators.
It is a dangerous book.
Hard to believe it was written 150 years agoReview Date: 2008-10-27
You will recognize very similar topics to today's government. Read about bailouts for large businesses which are in trouble, when the government should mind its own business. Read how politicians protect their power by calling people "isolationists" (though it is called "individualists" in the book) when they ask for less government interference in foreign affairs.
The thing I enjoyed the most was the crisp line which was drawn for where the government belongs. He says that people have the right to protect their liberty and property. The people also have the right to organize together as a group (IE: government) to more effectively protect their liberty and property. Therefore, "The Law" should be used only as a means to protect liberty and property. The forced liberation of any group's wealth (property) for the benefit of another group is completely against the true purpose of government/law.

I agree with him 100 percent, but...Review Date: 2008-09-06
The first chapter started out wonderfully, articulately and simple. It was accessible and easy to understand and apply. I was excited as I hoped to share this with my husband to allow him to open up to my ideas on politics which are different from his (he's a democrat/socialist).
However, the rest of the book just seemed to be a rant that got more and more impassioned as it went along, which to me seemed to take away from the reader's ability to take what he was saying seriously. I was disappointed because even though I agreed with everything he said and thought his applications of his ideas were great, I felt sort of embarrassed about his inability to keep calm in expressing his ideas.
The book is sound, based on sound ideas and should appeal to any libertarian. I nodded a lot as I was reading it. "Yes!" I kept telling myself, "this is definitely true." Unfortunately the truth was told, in this case, in a way that I don't think would be very accessible to the people that Bastiat was intent on reaching. I think a democrat/socialist might mislabel it "too radical" when they really mean, "too impassioned."
It is for that reason, I'm sorry to say, I was unable to rate this any higher.

Simply the best!
Although I rarely use these types of books when I'm writing my first draft, The Synonym Finder and it's companion, published by the same author, Word Finder, is never far from my reach during the re-writes. My only complaint would be that I haven't yet found it in software form.

I like how it discribes a particular food item and it's best usage. For example apple: Which are better for baking, eating, and cooking.
There are charts for every conversion possible and tables galor to help you prepare better meals.
I think reading this book has made my cooking at home better because it make me less scared that I might not get the correct taste by using the wrong foods. They even go gover you meat seltion and where they come from. This great for desiding what and how to prepare it.
The good thing about this comprehensive guide, is that there are no recipes with some minor exceptions; like a rux. This is good because it is a guide, not a cookbook.
Enjoy
