The college dictionary I liked bestReview Date: 2005-08-15
I would have given this dictionary five stars, but I found the paper quality, which looks a little like newsprint, to be less than top quality and likely to turn color with age. All in all, however, this was the one I liked the best.
As an added tip, you might want to check out the Random House thesausus, which I also gave my niece to complement the dictionary. It was an even clearer winner over its competition, in my mind, than the dictionary.

Some value, but not a lot more than the introductory bookReview Date: 2007-08-26
The sections covering each of the major disciplines are useful, as is the guidance on implementing RUP in projects or organisations. In contrast 'Rational Unified Process Made Easy' misses a good summary of the key artefacts.
All up I felt the book was hampered by the desire not to undermine the RUP product that IBM sells.

Tips for the 5th grade classroom teacherReview Date: 2008-02-24
Routman moves most of the academic material to the end of the book, where there are many endnotes with references to research articles and a hefty index.
So what's not to like? The text is more of a collection of ideas and tips rather than an evolving education in teaching literacy (which I would love to see Routman take on). The many entry points to the text material (sidebars, bullet points, "Try it, Apply it" tabs, chapter heads, and subheadings) prevented me from finding a continuous, developing thread of instruction. The book is, as it sets out to be, a tune-up guide for trained teachers who are already dealing with classrooms of students. There is too little step-by-step guidance for homeschoolers who are new to teaching literacy. This is especially apparent in dealing with very early readers, where specific training, commercial materials lists, and informal assessments would be welcome (Routman seems to say that such would be infeasible). I missed recommended reading lists that might specifically tie in with coaching in the text, and striking the best balance of phonics to reading is brought out, but left up to the intuition of the teacher.
The thrust of most of the book is about 5th grade difficulties, but it seems to me that a solid K-3 program would head off most of those problems. I found K-3 to be the weakest component of the book.
Routman acknowledges the many demands on classroom teachers for their time and compassion, but I think she is unrealistic about what is achievable in a classroom-based school setting. Interestingly, though she never mentions homeschooling, her prescriptives are precisely what motivates homeschoolers (this one, at least) and homeschooling is a very sensible response to many of the ills she addresses.
Finally, I had the nagging feeling that the book could have benefited from being substantially shorter. Whatever shortcomings Reading Essentials may have for homeschoolers, it's still the best resource available, and it IS essential.

Lots of useful Information for experienced requirements engineersReview Date: 2007-02-21
Writing these documents is not a big deal, however to make the customers read
"Use Case"-documents and provide feedback is much more difficult. But without feedback
it is not possible for a developer to write correct requirement documents.
I ordered this book because I liked the word "collaboration" in its title. It implies
the importance of working together with the customer in order to get the requirements right.
As I expected the author concentrates much more on the process to elicit proper requirements
rather than on the notations of requirements models such as UML. The best way to collaborate
with customers is to have structered meetings the so called workshops.
The book is divided into following three parts: "1. Overview of Requirements Workshops",
"2. Requirements Workshop Framework", "3. Requirements Workshop Design Strategies". Especially
the 2nd part contains a lot of detailed information and sometimes it is difficult not to get
lost. But part one and three are quit easy to follow.
Only in part one is a chapter which describes the different requirements models.
They are categorized according to their view, focus and level of detail. After reading this chapter you
know when to use which model. "Use Case"-Models are the most popular requirements models.
However, there are software projects in which other requirements model are more appropriate.
This chapter gives you an overview of the 19 different models.
Although a brief summary of every model is provided there is no example. If you want to know
the details of these different models you have to look for other sources of information.
The rest of the book concentrates on the prepartion and facilitation of workshops. A lot of useful
advice is given on how to manage people, content and processes in a workshop. Most of the
content of the book is aimed at facilitors of workshops. If you have nobody in your company who
has the necessary skillset to facilitate workshops, the author recommends to hire someone from
a consulting company, who can do this for your workshops.
On the author's website there several useful templates and guidelines which help you make your
workshops more successfull.
This book is a recommended reading for everyone who is responsible for the success of a software project.
How to do requirements workshops that work?Review Date: 2006-12-10
The author provides a framework for organizing requirements workshops. The framework is based on getting six Ps right. The Ps are "Purpose, Participants, Principles, Products, Place and Process". For each step it describes typical things that need to be done. First establish a share purpose. Find the right participants for the workshop. Set the principles and ground rules. Decide what work products to create (the book provides an excellent overview of work products used in requirement analysis). Define the requirements for the location and decide where to hold the workshop and decide the process to hold it.
In each steps, the author provides great tips and insights from her experience in facilitating workshops. In the later part, some strategies of requirement analysis are presented and the book ends with some case studies.
Overall, the book is well written an easy to read. The requirement workshop framework, at times seems overly complex and certainly would need to be tailored to the specific situation. However, I think this could not have been prevented when talking about a generic way of holding requirement workshops.
In Agile Development, requirement workshops are one way of doing requirement analysis and spreading the requirement analysis over the whole project. For these kind of workshops, this book is probably the only reference, eventhough the book itself does not cover this very well. Therefore "requirements by collaboration" is a must read for anyone who wants to do requirements workshops.

Practical and Inspirational BookReview Date: 2008-11-15
Jerry Weinberg's books have had a positive influence on my life as a technologist and manager, and with this book, he is now inspiring me to be a better writer. If you are a writer, or want to be one, you will want to read this book once for inspiration, and refer to it again later for it's exercises and advice.
Nice read - not the best WeinbergReview Date: 2008-03-21
Weinberg on writing: the fieldstone method is a book about writing books. The whole book is build around the analogy between writing a book and building a fieldstone wall. Building a fieldstone wall takes practice and you have to find the right stones (ideas) and put them in the right place to make a great wall. Not all the stones fit, some need to be shaped and not all walls will be great.
For me, personally, the analogy didn't work well. I felt it was more confusion than beneficial. It's created very clever, nothing wrong there. It's just hard to see, plus normally an analogy is made from an easier domain to understand. I found the domain of building fieldstone walls not much easier than book writing. I'd preferred more direct writing and talking about e.g. ideas instead of stones.
The book consists of 20 chapter about writing. Most chapters contain really really useful tips. Weinberg (with 40 books) has lots of experience and, as always, has done his research. The book is written in a similar style as most of his books. Easy to read and full of stories. (a coal mine...)
To mention some of the ideas in the book. Don't write when you have to. Use your energy. Play solitaire with idea. How to gather ideas. How to store ideas. How to use outliners. And the list goes on and on. Many ideas, some conceptual, some very concrete.
Near the end of the book, Gerry very smartly explains the techniques he introduces on this book. He talks about writing, while writing. Though done very well, I found it somewhat confusing.
Overall, Gerald Weinberg did a great job writing yet another book. It's worth reading and contains a huge amount of advise. I'm sure this book is useful for every writer. Recommended.
Much more than techniqueReview Date: 2007-01-24
Jerry Weinberg's "fieldstone" method is a powerful concept and technique, but what stands out most about this book to me is the way in which, between the lines, Weinberg addresses the *emotional* difficulty of writing, and the way in which things like buried memories of scolding grammar teachers and other childhood traumas can weigh down our writing efforts, or even prevent us from putting words on the page at all. I don't mean to suggest that this is some kind of self-help or pop psychology book--it is fundamentally a book about writing. But Weinberg's Fieldstone Method is not only an approach for getting things written; it is also a way of thinking about writing that makes it easier to overcome the many "invisible" obstacles, to forgive ourselves, to give ourselves permission to write.
Weinberg on Writing is well worth your time, no matter your particular writing interest.

The greatest weakness is perhaps the greatest strengthReview Date: 2007-10-28
First, let me preface this review by stating that I am an extreme novice, in the serious study of the scriptures, so don't regard my opion too highly.
I do not trust any one completely, when it comes to the matter of my own salvation, which is very much dependent on my understanding of scripture. I have what I regard as a healthy contempt for doctors of divinity, and conferred degrees; all people are subject to common human frailty, and are thus subject to being deceived, no matter what seminary they attend, whatever academic degrees they have obtained, and however sincere they may be. Once a concept is accepted as true, it generally is highly resistant to being rejected, even after the light of truth has revealed it to be error. What I am trying to say, is that generally, children in a Baptist Sunday School class, generally grow up to become Baptist theologians, and Lutheran children likewise usually grow up to become Lutheran theologians, and so on. I know that all theologians have their own particular set of presuppositions and biases, and these biases necessarily affect their interpretation of scripture, even though they may strive valiantly to resist all subjectivity, when called upon to perform the holy, sacred, and even frightening work of translating the scriptures.
McReynold's has chosen a scheme of scripture translation, which only renders a single English word, for each Greek word. That is, he has not sought to enter into speculation regarding which shade of meaning a Greek word has, depending on the context of the passage, nor I suppose, it's grammatical placement (where the word is placed in the sentence), as well as other factors that I am not seeing, due to my great ignorance. This may seem like a severe drawback, and to some extent it probably is. However, consider that it has the advantage of being relatively free from the theological presuppositions and biases of a translator, who sincerely tries to help along the scripture, to say what he believes it is trying to say, and you will then see that McReynold's translation is inherently more trustworthy in this respect. To my knowledge, no other interlinear, nor Bible version, is translated this way.
Being that I am so easily deceived, because I have virtually no background in Greek, I find this interlinear to be a preventive bulwark against the subtleties of man. Better yet--if I understood biblical Greek fluently, I could generally dispense with using interlinears; but for now, they are a necessary help, to bridge me over to the original writings, to some degree at least.

At home, I opened it, expecting buyer's remorse. No way!!! This kit is amazing. I plan to use it in the classroom next year, both during school hours with my writing students and after hours with my Writers Guild. I especially like the sample story -- in the directions -- that is essentially the result of the toolbox games.
My favorite device? The non sequiter sticks. I plan on using them to help keep some of my non-fiction writing dynamic. Of course, I'll have to modify the items to my own research and reality, but that strikes me as half the fun.
A very clever little box full of games, ideas, and methods for creative writing. Thanks!
