This C++ core language book is so often used that I thought it may deserve a review.

I own 3 books about C++ and this one became the reference. Only 200 pages (compared to the 1000 pages of another one :) but every useful feature is well explained. Authors payed careful attention in order to prevent the reader to fall in common traps. Lots of examples, always accompanied with relevant comments.

C++ in a core language really answers the questions the beginners have in mind. Concise, pragmatic, the authors are not showing off, they simply remember they were beginners one day and their explanations are exactly what one can expect. Well, I'm so happy about this book (this morning again, I was looking for a reminder about "virtual" functions or a detail about the copy constructor and all my worries were answered with no ambiguity at all) I went straight to to Amazon for a review :)

This book is relatively short, but many people might see this as a good thing, since it is really intended to transition C programmers to the basics ("core") of C++. I believe it does a decent job of this, although there are some topics (such as const) that I think it should cover but, surprisingly, does not. I liked the comparisons between polymorphism in C and C++, and the explanation of virtual functions. The examples are pretty good. There is some great humor in the book, and some parts actually made me laugh out loud. Overall, I would suggest the book to any C programmer who wants to transition to C++. Get this as your first such transitional book, then once you understand the basics, move on to a more comprehensive intermediate level book.

C++: The Core Language is a well written book and a pleasure to read. It appears that that authors made an extra effort to remove unneeded verbiage. I appreciate this because I have so much to read.

The bread and butter OOD concepts of abstraction and polymorphism are well covered. The chapter on templates covers this difficult subject well, however, I would have liked to have seen a little more on template functions.

I came from a Kernighan and Ritche C background (the "C' bible), and this seemed to pick up right where they left off. You could call this book K&R part II, and it is also about the same size. If you want a complete C++ bookshelf, I would also recommend buying (in this order) Effective C++ by Scott Meyers, The C++ Standard Library by Nicolai Josuttis, and C++ in a Nutshell by Ray Lischer.

This is an excellent book for C programmers coming to C++ for the first time. I found the writing style and organisation of topics to be very good. The authors describe key object-based and object-oriented concepts first using familiar C constructions and then extend those ideas into the C++ domain. The ease of transitioning from C structs to C++ classes was very good, as was the discussion of subtle points like the copy constructor. Almost all major C++ concepts are described, including inheritence, virtual functions, and even templates.

My only negative criticism is that the authors leave out some important C++ functionality from their view of the C++ "core." They only mention in passing the use of const, considered by many to be vital to good C++ design. Also, since this book was published in 1995, it does not discuss the C++ standard library, which was finalised in 1997. It is therefore missing a discussion of the very useful 'string' class, among many others. Readers should defininitely follow up on these topics.

Regardless of this missing information, this book will give C programmers a solid foundation for using C++.

As an undergrad and passionate dbl major, having read many books in C and C++, this book quickly became my friend. It's a good read for those breaking out of C to C++. This book helped me cope with the shock experienced while I was trying to learn ADTs, BSTs, splay trees, skip lists, multiway tries and extendable hashing in the high level programming courses where if you asked questions you'd look dumb. The information in this book made me feel contiguously good while sitting in class. It also served as another perspective and filled in the gaps that the professor and school text left out. Also, pick up Robert Sedgewick's Algorithms in C++ 3rd Edition, which is also a splendid read.

This was recommended reading for The Delta Society training course. It is an excellent insight in to the world of dogs. Very good examiniation of dog body language. By learning to pay attention to your dogs posture, you will know what it is thinking before it does. Remember there are no dumb dogs, just dumb owners. Learn to understand your animal. Read this book.

I bought this book after our trainer let us borrow hers for a while. There is more information than I could ever remember, so it's very useful as a reference. Dog behavior is often very different from human behavior (e.g., among dogs avoiding eye contact is considered polite) and this book helps make sense of what is really going on with them, making it possible to stop problem behavior before it begins.

This is one of the BEST books I think any dog owner can buy!
Especially, if you have more than one dog of your own.
I purchased it after recently acquiring a new puppy.
That makes 3 dogs currently.
One of the older dogs, gets along very well with the new puppy.
The other older (male - an alpha dog thing I guess) has not gotten along so well with the pup. It is NOT the puppy's fault, rather, I think I have a jealous old dog who thinks he owns me, and is 'guarding' me from this new intruder...
So, this book is full of photos with descriptions giving you guidelines of what the different body language (and some is VERY subtle) is telling not only you BUT, what it is telling the other dogs. Body language seems to be the key way a dog communicates with other dogs. Sometimes, we have to watch very closely to see a particular cue from the dogs themselves.
These cues, are easily noticed by other dogs and can forewarn of impending actions that may be about to happen...
such as snapping at the new puppy etc.
I love my older dogs, BUT, they MUST co-exist with the new one(s) and this is one way to help insure that they do.
Hopefully, old dog with learn to accept the pup.
I also purchased a wire muzzle for old dog. I do mean business! Being that the breeds I have a large dogs, I do not want to come in between the old dog and pup at the biting end with out protection.
I highly recommend this book for NICER aspects of dog ownership also.
It is fun to decipher with help of the book the different meanings of the "play time" body language as well.
Great for dog watchers, even if you do not own a dog, but just enjoy watching them (or if you were ever wondering about the dog coming towards you down the street while you are out jogging... and he is not with his owner OR on a leash :0 ).

I used Aloff's pictures and descriptions of dog body language to try to understand an adopted dog that I thought was showing signs of owner-directed aggression. He wasn't. He was trying to tell me a lot, but I hadn't understood it. After I studied the book, I changed my reactions and behaviors. We developed a very good and positive relationship. He "mellowed" according to other people. Actually, I think he finally felt that he belonged in this strange human pack. A very helpful and interesting book for anyone who deals with dogs.

Good, but could be a lot more professionally written and photographed for the price. The quality of the photos is only very average. The explanations for each picture are at times too brief leaving the reader a bit confused. For example, I found it frustrating to be told some behavior is a displacement signal or a negotiation signal, but not define what the author means by the term displacement, etc. I was rather disappointed in this book.

We have a program in the Las Vegas mail processing center where we find solutions for better communication with all employees. To our hearing impaired employees, we had training held in our facility by a certified interpreter who taught both craft and management employees to finger spell words and phrases. We were going to order another sign language book to be given by our plant manager to those who completed the training sessions as his appreciation to them, but there were those who read the reviews on this "Idiot's" book, hence, this is what I ordered. They use it as a refresher, it's well illustrated and easy. Everybody was happy with the book. For the next training group, I'll be ordering some more of this book.

I am taking sign language classes and they gave us a book. The class didnt like the book that they gave us it didnt help us at all. So we all bought this book and its a great book with a cd and its easy learning.

Having taken 2 semesters of ASL, I must admit that I was disappointed to see a vocabulary list that I knew 95% of...but this book is definitely an excellent source for those with no or very little prior ASL knowledge. NOTE: THIS IS NOT ASL. The book is Pidgin Signed English (now called Contact Signing) which is easier to learn if your first language is English. That is, the grammar of ASL is absent in the presence of English word order. But the way the book is laid out, it's easy to learn! There's little bits of cultural information, how to engage and end a conversation, "do"s and "don't"s, and more! I like the little anecdotes, too.

Pros: Easy to follow, comes with a DVD to reinforce and clarify signs, decent amount of information for a beginner

Cons: NOT ASL (ASL "words" but not the grammar) and not terribly helpful for those with moderate exposure to sign language


Overall, it's a handy cultural tool that helps you learn a little language :)

I only just received this today and immediately opened the book and thumbed through the chapters, I also browsed the introduction and watched the intro on the DVD and reviewed a few other signs. That said I have not had time to get into the meat of it BUT what I have seen so far has been praise-worthy. A very good intro and some good info about different sign language 'languages' I learnt a few things thT I did not previously know (not signs other related info) which was quite interesting. Good explanation on what is conversational sign language and how it differs from say 'signed english language'. The DVD has a visual for the signs from the book (important to know), you are taught by both a deaf and hearing person (mother and daughter)which I also found good.More than 600 signs... Let's face it most people buying this are 'hearing' people who have an interest in communicating with the 'hearing impaired'. From what I have seen this book will help with basic communication and those seeking further vocab now have a base to build on.Also information on common misconceptions, interesting facts and also special tips on improving your signing. I will update the review as I explore the package more. But so far 'two thumbs up' (or 5 stars).

My wife works at a doctors office where they have a couple of deaf patients. She has always wanted to learn sign. She couldn't put the book down. After two days she was signing non-stop. Originally she only wanted to buy the DVD instruction but I encouraged her to use this book too. Now it is the other way around. She goes to this book first and uses the DVDs as a backup. I also got her some ASL flash cards that work well for practice.

I listen to this CD everyday. It has changed my life. Earl Nightingale is my new hero. Everyone should listen and own a copy of this CD.

This is a must have for anyone needing direction. I've put these principles to use many times over the years. This recording reinforces the idea that "WE BECOME, WHAT WE THINK ABOUT!"

I have the CD and have been listening to it several times already. It's such a simple message, but so profound at the same time. Moreso, it's spoken in a very calming and supportive voice that comes across as extremely inspiring. You become what you set out to be and what you think about. It is a recording about setting a goal and working towards that goal. Thinking positively constantly, and remaining keen on hitting your goal. I've found it insprirational, and it's a CD I'll continue to listen to so that I can keep the message fresh in my mind. Highly recommended if you are someone who is trying to find motivation to and inspiration to make change in your life,l but struggling with getting in motion.

Light years before The Secret (which I happen to LOVE), Earl Nightingale was already preaching the gospel according to the Law of Attraction.

What a great message in a short CD. His voice is very 50's sounding, but so easy to listen to. You'll hear all the same messages as you do in The Secret, but remember that this was recorded decades before.

Little Red Book of Selling: 12.5 Principles of Sales Greatness

The most amazing characteristic of this message is its clarity. I have read hundreds of motivational books, and this might be the shortest and clearest text on the topic of setting goals and living mindfully. A true classic! No wonder that the original LP received a Golden Record award, indicating that over 1 million copies were sold. I highly recommend listening to the CD at least once every month!

One of the most enlightening books I have ever read. It delivers, in spades, a strategy for gaining positive publicity. On the way, it provides extremely interesting and thought provoking insight into how the media (and media professionals) operates.

The book is logically structured, with each chapter building on the previous. The result is a memorable system, as opposed to a jumble of rules.

Each chapter provides valuable insights into the how's and why's of gaining access to media. The insight that had the most impact on me was that you have a client relationship with reporters. The only thing is, the reporter is the client. That insight alone was worth the price of the book.

This is a great read, and a must-have on your short list if you're interested in Media Relations. Mark breaks down his book into easy to digest chapters, with real world examples of how each media rule works. By the time you get done with this book, you'll have it highlighted, with notes and ideas written in the margins, eager to try them out for your cause. Then you'll read it again to see what you missed the first time!

I'm getting ready to return to college and get my degree in Communications/PR. After seeing Mark give a presentation at a luncheon, getting the chance to read his book and taking the opportunity to talk with him, I was convinced more than ever to stay on track. I'm hoping to use the ideas in his book to stun my professors. Thanks Mark!

I don't think anyone can read Feeding the Media Beast and not be entertained. Better yet they will learn valuable insights about dealing with the media. There has always been a mystique about the media, that somehow they are greater beings than mere mortals. Mathis easily puts that to rest through his personal stories and often humorous examples. Mathis knows the media and is generous in his willingness to share.

Once anyone with a product to sell or something to promote figures out that the media need US they will be halfway to meeting their goal. Knowing how the game is played, and how important we are to them, is what Mathis does an excellent job of teaching.

Prepare. That is the key principle that Mathis shares and that we need to remember over and over. The media can be intimidating and daunting if we allow it, but with the information in Feeding the Media Beast it doesn't have to be. The media should be our best friend and after reading this book you'll feel much more confident and remember that they need us.

If you have any interest in working with the media successfully, read this book. Before you write a press release, before you call a journalist, and definitely before you accept an interview, listen to what Mark Mathis has to say about the nature of the media industry. His experience and his insights are invaluable. Initially I had thought that the cartoon on the front and the constant reference to the media as a "Beast" seemed infantile, and then I realized that this is in keeping with the message. The media IS infantile. Modern media is hardly a mature form of communication--it's more like a three-year-old throwing a tantrum. Why it's that way is a subject for sociologists and philosophers. All I'm concerned with is how to work with this three-year-old, and this book shows me the way.

Mathis' book is *excellent*, but government communicators should also see a book written by a Washington pro, see Media Relations Handbook for Agencies, Associations, Nonprofits and Congress. The Handbook is written by Brad Fitch, who has more than a decade of Washington PR experience, with a Foreword by Mike McCurry.

Dangling modifiers. Loose pronouns. Mixed metaphors. Sentence fragments . . . aw crap.

Whatever your sin, Sin and Syntax is an all-purpose grammar guide that helps not only to improve your grammar but also to polish your prose.

Constance Hale divides her book into three sections: words, sentences, and music. In words, she defines the fundamental building blocks of grammar (nouns, verbs, prepositions, etc.). In sentences, she teaches sentence mechanics and variation. In music, she explains how to add verve to your writing by experimenting with techniques such as assonance, metaphor, and beat.

Her book, however, is not simply about correcting wrongs. Hale informs writers when you can break the rules and when you look illiterate when you do. Putting prepositions at the end of the sentence? Not a big deal. Peppering foreign words into your story? Sure, just don't go crazy. Nouning verbs and verbing nouns? We have a bit of a problem here.

Hale did her homework. She provides extensive examples from politicians and writers to illustrate her concepts. She references numerous other style guides and also provides a handy list of them in the appendix. Most importantly, however, anyone can benefit from reading her book. She writes at a level that's easy enough for the grammatically-challenged to understand, but she also explains advanced material that's still useful to experienced writers. She doesn't delve too deeply into grammar terminology; she focuses her energies on improving your style all-around.

Frank, clear, and amusing, Sin and Syntax is one of the best grammar guides when it comes to perfecting your craft.

My sister stole my first copy, my other sister stole my second copy, I gave my third copy to a friend (but only because I knew she would love it as much as I do). My fourth copy doesn't have the dog-eared pages and underlining that my first copy had (I fall into the category of people who think tattered edges and scribbly notes add character to books). And I gave a fifth copy to another friend who was frustrated drafting an admissions essay for grad school. One of the best books on writing (generally) on the market. Funny and entertaining, with excellent advice.

This is a fine book about the mechanics of writing. Here's the rub. Appendix 1 and 2 were replaced by duplicates of chapters 14 and 15 in the book I read. Otherwise this book is worth 5 stars.

This is your average grammar book, but with a sense of humor. I discovered nothing new in it.

wow. this book is a must for any writer, experienced or novice. not only is it a useful tool, but it is a fabulous read with witty references and comments throughout.

This is a great Book! We used this book in a sign language class I took. It is easy to read and understand. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to talk to the deaf or hard of hearing.

This book covers numerous "word groupings" in 17 chapters. Some of these groupings include, "Days of the Week & Time"; "School & Education"; "Descriptions,Thoughts& Emotions"; "The body& Health"; "Mealtime& Food"; "Home&Clothing"; "Numbers,Math Terms,Quantity &Money"; "Pronouns,People&Relationships"; "Actions"; as well as many more.
I especially like this book for the photographic illustrations. So far this is the only ASL book I have found with photographic illustrations.

With each word there are specific instructions for the proper hand shape, position, and movement to go with each sign as well as a visual reminder for memory. At the bottom of each page there is a photographic guide as a visual reminder of all the proper hand shapes that are used in all the signs for that particular page.

I would highly recommend this book for any with the desire to learn Sign Language.

This book was a required text for a Sign Language I course. The pictures are very clear, it gives good description of hand shape, location and movement. I really like that it gives a hint of how to visualize each sign, it makes it much easier to remember.

The book "Talking With Your Hands, Listening With Your Eyes" is a great book for people wanting to start learning sign language. The photographs of the signs are very clear. I especially like the additional material throughout the book about Deaf Culture and history. I recommend this book and enjoyed reading it even though I have been a student of sign language for 5 years.

Love the book, first borrowed it from my local library. The binding does tend to crack with much use, so I broke my book's binding and put all the pages in clear cover sheets in a 3 ring binder. Cost a little more but it was worth it because now I don't have to worry about destroying it and my book will last a lot longer. I found this book the most helpful in explaining how to do the signs as well as illustrating them in very clear photos. I highly recommend!!!

Every public and school library should have a copy of this excellent resource. The research that Judy Freeman did to create this compendium of quality read aloud books is well worth the investment.

Targeted at grades K - 6, the first 100+ pages include wide-ranging information about children's books and ways to use them. The next 600 pages contain wonderful annotated read-aloud lists divided by Easy Fiction/Picture books, Fiction, Folk & Fairy Tales, Myths and Legends, Poetry, Nonsense and Language Oriented non-fiction, Biography, and Non-fiction. In addition to standard information (author, summary, etc.) each of the 1,705 annotations includes grade level, related titles, subjects, and a "Germ." "Germs" are small, practical, do-able ideas to interject into lesson plans including ideas for sharing the books with children and incorporating comprehension, creativity, library skills, and cross-curricular ties, etc. Pick one book on the list and turn it into a great lesson plan!

The final 200 pages include a professional bibliography and 3 handy indices: Author/Illustrator Index, Title Index, and the index I find most helpful - the Subject Index including grade level of each book. Subject you can think of is covered - from Aardvarks to Bullying to Hispanic Americans to Zoos!

I cannot recommend a book more highly! It's not just for school librarians - teachers, homeschoolers, parents, and public librarians will also love it! I also recommend previous editions - Books Kids Will Sit Still For and More Books Kids Will Sit Still For - both have different hints on how to be a great librarian and annotated lists of older books. I use all three Judy Freeman's books almost daily to help me work with teachers and plan great library lessons.

I stumbled across this wonderful book while working my way through our library's books about books in search of more wonderful picture books to share with my toddler (who is nearly 19 months). It was mis-shelved in the local branch (took 4 tries for the librarian to find it) and since no one had noticed in the 6 months or so since the book came in, my friendly librarian slapped a due date sticker on it and let me check it out. I found myself immersed in it during the daughter's afternoon nap and checked to see if either of the previous volumes was available to check out. Alas no, although I found a cheap ex-library copy of the previous volume, More Books Kids Will Sit Still For: A Read-Aloud Guide (2nd Edition), which when it arrived looked like it had never been touched. I don't pretend to understand that - I think this is a treasure trove of ideas and books to share with young (and not so young) children. Although it's aimed at elementary educators, there's a huge amount to offer a parent or other caregiver...ideas for activities related to the books as well as related titles.

As the parent of a toddler, I confess that I prefer the overlapping mini-sections by age found in More Books Kids Will Sit Still For: A Read-Aloud Guide (2nd Edition) and Books Kids Will Sit Still For: A Read-Aloud Guide Second Edition (Books Kids Will Sit Still for) because it's easier to sift through a couple hundred titles than 800 for books short enough for a toddler to sit through, but that's more of a quibble, especially since the expanded entries offer so many ideas for making (or keeping) books interesting.

How does she do it? Another winner from Judy Freeman! More tips, annotations, bibliographies, storytelling, reader's theater etc.. The amount of material is superb and the format is clear and precise. She is marvelous at what she does and can help any media specialist or teacher sharpen their book skills.
A must buy for all elementary educators!

I've had the pleasure in the past week to read Judy Freeman's Newbery committee experience in her latest "Books Kids will sit still for 3" (c. 2006). She had to take the Librarian Oath, probably with a ceremonial blood letting to seal it, that she and the other members would never tell the secrets of the Committee dealings with the individual books. Ooooooh, that makes me want to be on the Committee even more!

I thought the listings alone in the book would be worth the book's weight in gold (which is substantial, with more than 900 pages), but it pales in comparison with the first 100+ pages of the book in which she shares her passion for reading, books, libraries, and children. What a treat! Reward yourselves soon by allowing time to read this.

This concise and interesting book provides a detailed approach to FPGA-based digital circuit and system design using VHDL. It presents the basic concepts in organized and progressive phases. The textbook covers the constructs of the VHDL programming language with a large number of implementable examples. A multitude of complete illustrative examples are also included.

If you are searching for the best book in VHDL ever, you will not find such a book! However, if you decided to start learning VHDL, Pedroni (the author) got you. I am doing my masters and I just finished reading this book and I finished my final project for the course as well. It is my first course in VHDL. By finishing this book as I said I was able to design and implement a FULL CPU (MIPS architecture) as a final project for the course. and I am sure that if you read this book you will do a similar or better job.

Regarding books, we, i.e. students, are looking for specific features:
1- well written and easy to read.
2- well organized.
3- correct and clear ideas with smooth information flow.
4- good and correct solved examples.
5- are you going to use that book if you worked in industry.
6- LEAST NUMBER of pages.

all these requirements are met in this book. within less than 400 pages you will learn, how to implement any digital system. If you read this book, you will not learn digital filters design (FIR, IIR) or neural Networks (NN) design. However, if you know how to design them, this book presents some examples about how to implement FIR, IIR and NN using VHDL.
I highly recommend reading this book as a start up, and for sure your next step (I mean after reading this book) will be working in industry. you will need no more books to learn VHDL. instead, you will need to review digital systems' designs and start implementing them using your skills you have from this book.
IN CONCLUSION:

This book does a great job of teaching you how the VHDL language works, and how to use it.
It has many explained examples, and problems you can try.
I agree with others that he does jump around a bit, and you will have to look back or ahead.
It could also use a VHDL Quick Reference and a glossary.
If the index clear should where a key word was first defined, this would work too. It does have an index, but it is not a great index.
I used Xilinx ISE Webpack 9i - which is a free down load - the test and simulate the examples.

I was looking for a simple book to use as the main reference for my students, who are new to the concept of the hardware description languages. I found this the best book to fit my needs. It is simple and has a good organization which takes you slowly through the main concepts of the VHDL. It greatly helped me setting the outline for the course.

Author communicates his thoughts in very precise and concise language (I found only one minor typo). This book focuses on writing synthesizable code; that fact alone makes it a very practical reference for any engineer working with CPLD or FPGA. If one supplements this book with VHDL reference and Xilinx Web edition of ISE, it is possible to get started quickly; at least I did. Thanks Volnei.

The recipes are simple and easy to follow. And Your kitchen will improve to restaurant levels!!!!!!

My wife, who was raised in Puerto Rico, loves this book. Her mom and aunts used it while she was growing up and it reminds her of the traditional mildly spiced Puerto Rican cooking.

My mother who is now 94 years old used this book in her kitchen for as long as I can remember. I grew up eating food prepared from the recipes in this book. I am a 64 year old man who now has to cook for him-self if he wants to eat Puerto Rican food. I recently bought this book as a replacement for the worn out copy I bought years ago to replace the copy my mother gave me when she got to old to cook anymore. I cook other kinds of foods too, but I would be lost without this book so I can prepare my favorite Puerto Rican dishes every once in a while.
