One of best teachers for cameras; but imaging falls short.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-11
This book would have rated 5 stars, if only a CD with digital images were provided for the part II "Digital Darkroom" techniques. An excellent text for easily learning a lot about digital cameras - and worth the $20 for that part alone. But talking about digital image processing, supported only by poorly reproduced black-and-white shots on greyish paper, doesn't hack it. Had the author provided a CD with practice images to support his well-done imaging tips, it would have been masterful. But words alone are incapble of giving you the "feel" for fine-tuning options and sliders in PhotoShop Elements or similar programs. The author does provide a website address that perhaps will have the missing pictures? But no, I receive a puzzling message of "account unavaiable; contact your support rep". Huh? Anyhow, even if the images could be downloaded, it would be an inexcusable waste of the reader's time, and once again no substitute for an included CD. Ken Milburn is an excellent teacher - let's hope a 2nd edition of this potential winner will address these issues.

This books is more focus in how to edit your photos with adobe photoshop, that how to take a picture. the author do not cover the diferents techniques, nor he explain how to improve the shot with you camera or before you take the picture, basilly the books has 4 or 6 chapters on the difirent features in the camera and then goes on in how to edit the photos in you computer. not a good book if you want to improve you technique on taking pictures

Milburn talks the talk, but can't walk the walk
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-18
This is a useful book for beginning to intermediate digital photographers. The writing is mostly clear and concise (though a more thorough editing job would have caught a few typos and more than a few awkward sentences), and Milburn does a fine job avoiding geekspeak without talking down to his readers.

The cheesy-looking cover is a turn-off though, and a foreshadowing of the lack of visual sophistication throughout. The print quality of the black and white example photos strewn through the book is somewhere between mediocre and atrocious; there seems to have been little effort on the part of the publisher to ensure print quality and a modicum of contrast (all the b/w pics look washed out).

But Milburn mostly has himself to blame for the unappealing-looking photography. The guy just isn't that good a lensman. So while he knows his stuff, his pictures are only moderately competent -- and wholly uninspiring. A 16-page color section in the heart of his book is meant to show off his work to its advantage, illustrating different techniques. These pictures are well-printed for change, but their mostly compositional flaws shows that Milburn just can't practice what he preaches. The best example is his picture of a roller coaster, a photo whose surprisingly dreary colors are accentuated by what looks to be a mudfield occupying the whole bottom third of the image. Ugh.

Nevertheless, this is a solid and suprisingly exhaustive primer on digital photography. It could have been a great book if Milburn had had the modesty to use high-quality third-party pictures (even stock images would have worked fine), instead of uninspiring samples from his own ho-hum portfolio.

this is a great book to expand your horizons with your digital camera. I like the layout and a digital camera makes it so easy and inexpensive to experiment with all the ideas laid out in this great book.

If you have a good background in photography, some of the concepts will not be new to you, but its a great gift for someone starting out with a new digital camera.

This book seemed as though it would have been very helpful in preparing for a career in phlebotomy. Unfortunately, I decided not to take that career path. The good news, though, is that today, April 10, I sold it on Amazon to another customer. Also, I was able to sell it for right around the same price I purchased it for.
In the small amount of time I skimmed through this book, I found that it was a great tool to be used when studying the textbook that goes along with it. Thank you Amazon!!!

Honestly, I am not satisfied with this book at all. How can I check if I am right or wrong if there are no answers either in the book or online? I bought it because the teacher demanded this but it's useless for me and I don't recommend this book to anybody. (May be it's OK not to have answers if you care only about grades, but if you care about knowledge, you must understand what your mistakes are. The book "Phlebotomy exam review" by the same authors is MUCH BETTER.

Good Overview of Forensics
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-04
Not for the faint of heart, this book contains a fair amount of somewhat graphic photographs accompanying the text. While to be sure, this is not an in-depth thesis of forensics, for what it is, which is a layman's overview of forensic methods and detection, it is quite good. The font of the text and the book layout make it very comfortable to browse, and you may find yourself reading quite a lot in one sitting. Overall, very enjoyable, but don't expect a really deep book

This one depends on the reader....

This book was fair to midlin, depending on the perspective of the reader. I usually read for entertainment and to learn and the factual information presented was good. However, for a layperson like myself, I found much of the information on DNA and other crime solving techniques very confusing. It made me wonder how juries ever can understand it all. At times throughout the book, one would have to be a chemist to understand. Despite that, there were good portions that were both interesting and instructional. Anyone interested in forensics would just love this book. It is complete with pictures (some gruesome) and many different criminal investigative techniques. If you are reading this book because this is your field, it would be a five star book, if you are reading this book solely for entertainment - skip it, if you are reading this book in the hopes of committing a crime and getting away with it, it won't happen. But, if you are like me and are reading for both pleasure and knowledge, it's worth your time and effort.

Hidden Evidence Was Better

Review Date: 2001-10-14
I've just started reading this book. I bought it a few weeks ago but I find that Hidden Evidence is much better in the way they set there book up. In this book there information seem to be satured (sorry I'm a horrible speller.) In hidden evidence the material is put in sudheading which helps to find the information a lot faster. This book has headings at the begining of each chapter but no subheadings. Also in Hidden Evidence there case studies were right after the chapter which made it easier to read not having to stop half way through a chapter in Bodies of Evidence they put it in no good spot and it has nothing to do with that chapter. But the information so far in this book is good to learn if you want to know how crimes are solved and how they use it. But remember I'm only started the book and this is how I find it so far. Oh and the pictures in both Hidden Evidence and Bodies Of Evidence are excellent.

one of the most fascinating books i've ever read

On tv the witty cop gets the criminal single handedly. In reality the case against a criminal is often made in the forensics lab. If you enjoy watching the New Detectives or the FBI Files on TV you will love this book.

Picture book of forensic science
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-26
"Bodies of Evidence" is a Reader's Digest book about forensic science, featuring more than a hundred true crimes and many gory, full-color photographs. It's definitely not a text-book, but more of an overview of different methods of forensic detection. I didn't find the explanations particularly clear, and the cases chosen to illustrate the detective work were the usual, tried and true (or tried and convicted) Dr. Buck Ruxton, Aunt Thally and her poison tea, Sacco and Vanzetti, etc. The 'Boston Strangler' case was used as an example in the 'Suffocation and Strangulation' section, but no mention was made of the fact that DNA analysis has recently been used to clear Albert DeSalvo of at least one of the murders.

For those who are following the Chandra Levy case, "Bodies of Evidence" will provide an overview of the forensic techniques that the Washington D.C. police force may be employing.

The body of the book is divided into the following chapters, each with lots of illustrations and a case history or two: "Gathering the Evidence;" "Suicide or Murder?;" "Mark of Death (Physical assault, bruising);" "With Poison Deadly;" "Skull and Bones;" "Breath of Life (death by oxygen deprivation);" "Worm in the Flesh (decomposition, insect traces);" "Finger of Suspicion (fingerprints);" "Written in Blood;" "DNA Fingerprinting;" "Hanging by a Hair;" "The Speeding Bullet;" "Fire and Destruction;" "Fragments of Evidence (broken glass, paint fragments, etc);" "Speaking Likeness (voice prints);" "The Guilty Party (handwriting, identity parades, etc.);" "The Forensic Hardware (hi-tech methods and devices such as Neutron Activation, Mass Spectrometry, etc.);"

One minor criticism---I wish the publishers hadn't decided to stamp "CASE CLOSED" over the actual text of the case. It made the case histories slightly hard to read.

I used this Q-Bank book to review for step 3 along with Crush. The questions in this book are good and reflective of the information covered in Crush. Problem is, the questions are in no relation to what was asked on Step 3. I thought I was going to do well on Step 3, I recieved 225 on Step 1, and 230 on Step 2, but somehow by memorizing crush and this Kaplan Q-Bank, I managed to do poorly on Step 3. I was very disappointed on test day to realize that none of the questions from Kaplan even remotely resembled the questions on Step 3.

If the yellow DFT book is the blue print of circuit testing, then this book is the bolts and nuts. It outlines a good deal of state-of-art DFT problems in the industry, while staying away from rocket science (well, DFT science).

As a DFT engineer, I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know what's going on in the DFT industry.

One thing I found missing in this book is logic BIST. Maybe that means it's still not pratical to use logic BIST? :)

"Skip the high-brow theories" is right

While looking for a digital testing textbook that was more accessible to students than the Abramovici "Digital Systems Testing and Testable Design" text, I came across this one and thought it would be the perfect answer. When my copy arrived I was sorely disappointed.

If you need a book to introduce you to what the various testing techniques are, this book does a wonderful job! Its discussion will surely be useful to the typical test engineer. However, if you want to really understand HOW the design techniques work and how to optimize them, this book truly lives up to its claim of "Skip the high-brow theories and mathematical formulas" --- you will receive very little help in your endeavor.

This book's usefulness depends on what your need is. In one case it is great; in another it is poor.

Review Date: 2004-08-20
The topics covered in the book were great, but there was not enough detail present. The book is written for readers familiar with design, and sometimes assumes test knowledge as well. The text seemed to be repetative and full page, low detail diagrams were repeated quite frequently. I was disappointed that several pages were not devoted to the different SRAM test algorithms, and the author did not spend much time explaining JTAG design & test.

Excellent dissection guide for a cadaveric anatomy course. Buy two, one as a "greaser" and one to keep at home to study from. Grant's has simple schematics to help you locate structures as you dissect, as well as references to Grant's Atlas, Netter's, Clemente ("regional atlas") and Rohen (photographic). I own them all and love them all.

One problem: the binding is that terrible metal-coil fall-apart-the-instant-you-open-the-book style. Try to find one that is book-bound.
