This is THE book for AS/400 people wanting to learn Java
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-13
I've purchased many Java books and several Java books geared towards AS/400 professionals. This is the first book that actually made sense from cover to cover. I HIGHLY recommend this book for AS/400 professionals wanting to learn Java, JSP, Servlets and the latest features of the AS/400 toolbox for Java.

I had a bit of knowledge about Java before reading this book and was able to get to the next level using this book.

Although the examples were very informative and efficiently conveyed the lessons, I found some errors in the example code (First example has one). My only wish would be that the examples had more cleanup and error handling in them but I guess they didn't want the code to be too complicated and stay focused on the lesson at hand.

In addition to learning Java, I was able to quickly configure a Tomcat Web Server on our AS/400 using this book. The book also covered JDBC 2.0 which is a must, especially for database oriented AS/400 professionals.

Don Denoncourt has a very clear way of explaining and illustrating the concepts of Java.

A nice collection of hardware hacks
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

OK, of course I say it's a nice collection; I'm the author. :) This combination book/DVD is a selection of our favorite hacks from Hardware Hacking: Have Fun While Voiding Your Warranty and Game Console Hacking. If you're curious about modifying hardware and electronic products to do things they weren't intended to do, then this collection is for you. It's a great way to get involved in the hobby without breaking the bank. Cheaper than either of the previously mentioned larger books, only 4 chapters are printed (Tools of the Warranty-Voiding Trade, Electrical Engineering Basics, Operating Systems Overview, and Coding 101) The actual hacks (the rest of the material) is on the included DVD in PDF and HTML format with high-resolution images (most of them in color, as opposed to the black and white of the previous books). Some of the hacks include: Declawing your Cuecat, hacking the Playstation 2, hacking the iPod, modifications for the classic/retro Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, and 8-bit systems, hacking the Xbox, and how to build your own DVR/Home Theater PC. Don't be afraid to modify or hack your hardware - have fun voiding your warranty!

"If you are serious about Java and JRun, this is the book for you" it says on the cover of this book. I think this is true. I wish I had this book when I started working with JRun. This is an excellent book dealing with all aspects of JRun, including JSP, J2EE, packages, JavaBeans, servlets, databases, SQL, JRun Studio, Dreamweaver, Ultradev, installation, configuration, security, reusable components, performance, XML and WML.

The book starts from scratch and is suitable for beginners, but it also contains a wealth of information for experienced developers. The CD-ROM includes the source code of all the examples from the book. This book is a defenitive reference, a must-have for anyone doing development work with JRun.

JScript .NET and more!
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-12
I bought this book looking for information on the new features JScript .NET since I need to migrate my company's site to ASP .NET. This book covers all of the new features in the language and provides lots of examples that show how to use them. The author also covers migrating a sample site from ASP to ASP .NET and goes an extra mile by demonstrating how to migrate from using ADO to ADO.NET.

XML is integrated into all aspects of the .NET Framework - I was glad to see that the author discusses XML throughout the book, provides an appendix called 'XML Primer', and also discusses using XML with the new ADO .NET DataSet object (sort of like an always disconnected ADO Recordset object) within a Windows service written in JScript .NET.

Since JScript .NET is now fully object oriented, there are three chapters that cover Object oriented design and analysis. The author uses UML (the Unified Modeling Language) throughout the discussions, and provides two very useful appendices: UML Notation which describes elements of UML diagrams, and ' Translating from UML to JScript.NET Code' which shows how easy it is to convert a UML diagram into functioning JScript .NET code.

The book is well thought out and the samples are very practical. I recommend this book to developers with some programming background - even casual programming. Part two of the book, covered in five chapters, is a JScript primer for those that aren't familiar with the language. This book works well as a reference and it covers more than just programming using the JScript .NET language in enough detail to be as useful as three books in one!

Computer jargon, worms, firewalls and viruses can easily lead to confusion, particularly for the novice computer user. Mr. Uitti's book simplifies all the things necessary to protect your lifeline to the cyber world where cyber theifs and predators are lurking in the dark waiting to steal your money and even your identity. In simple language accompanied by delightful illustrations, Dan Uitti's book will become required reading for all computer users. I highly recommend this book.

Organise your Designs

I came across this book when I was going through the LEGO Dacta Learning Philosophy:background research and information relating to children's learning and development. The word is fun - hard fun, they say. It is likely that you struggled with certain problems for some time. Yet hours probably felt like minutes because you were in a creative problem-solving process that made you forget yourself. At times you were on the verge of giving up but you didn't because you had the sense of constantly getting closer to achieving your goal. You were not bored while learning. Come to think about it, you actually enjoyed learning, even though you had to work hard to get the results. Today, it is accepted as scientific fact that learning is not in contrast to having fun. In fact, being challenged to the limits of your abilities is enjoyable, and that is when optimal learning occurs. This state of mind occurs when the challenge of solving a problem is matched to the students' knowledge and skills.

Of all the books on content for mulimedia design, this book stood out in a unique way. The author tackled writing and conceptual design from a rhetorical, narrative, and associative point. A lot of stuff in the book is very well illustrated. With children's learning in perspective, this book showed me lots of scenarios like games, kiosks. Very organised in content. Its a must read for designers, who want to understand flowcharting, scripting for various scenarios.

I just finished reading this book, cover to cover. Just couldn't stop reading it, as Morris keeps it interesting. Moreover, it's an amazing resource for laptop troubleshooting and repair. In fact, the best I've ever read. Much better then Mueller's in terms of troubleshooting and the depth and scope of repairs - and it only has 191 pages. Armed with this book and the laptop's service manual, you are set to attack most of the problems you'll run into with laptops. Like Morris says in the front of the book, you'll notice we don't talk about the razzle-dazzle technology of computer components in this book." It's about fixing them and getting them back into working order. I highly recommend this book.

I loved MacHack. It is a book full of small programs that were made by a select group of programmers in a period of two days. MacHack is a contest held in Ann Arbor Michigan. The programmers work for two days to make their "hacks", little programs that help people get the most out of the Mac OS. The book is a little old though. It was published in `94, and MacHack is an annual thing, so go to http://www.machack.com to get the latest hacks.
