I'm an absolute beginner into Symbian OS programming and I find this book very perfect in order to let you start writing applications for Symbian Devices (there are many examples that make concepts intelligible).
It explains how Symbian OS architecture works and give many tips you can found only by search on newsgroups.

If you are a proficient C++ programmer, this book is perfect for you as a introduction to writing C++ on Symbian OS. It describes how Symbian OS works and show what differences exist between normal C++ and the one used while writing applications for Symbian OS.

However this is a mostly OS and C++ book. So it won't teach you how you can do specific things except the information it gives about socket usage to communicate via TCP/IP & GUI Design & Programming. It will teach you the OS and language specification so you'll understand when you see a code excerpt somewhere. Later you can read additional books or SDK documentation to learn about special classes os provides to do specific things. Also it point out the differences between different platforms (S60, S80, UIQ) where applicable by giving individual explanations & examples for each platform.

I strongly recommend reading this book before trying to write anything for Symbian OS. It'll help you greatly in the beginning.

It's a easy subject to explain but once you try and implement a DHCP server, you'll find out how complicated it really can get. Mostly because people take DHCP servers for grandite. Their in the back of the room, lurking in the shadows, working quiety and silently. THeir so redundent, you'd never know their were their till everything fubar's. The book is only 230 pages (not 400 like the spec's say) it is indepth at some but shallow at others. If that makes any sense. It's not a beginner's book, so it requires a basic intro understanding of dhcp and what it does. This is a great book if you want to know how to do your job, it gives you more information then you'll need, but isn't that the way it should be? :) I'm using it to help with that 70-216 but I'm not the type of person to read a book that is specifically meant for a test. I'd rather read the requirements of the test and buy 5 books that cover them. Don't choose an answer because it's right, choose it because all others are wrong.

I found this book to be absolutely essential to an understanding of the integration between DHCP and DDNS in Windows 2000. The book is very logically laid out, and is clearly written by a person who knows this subject intimately.

I would recommend this book as a must read to anyone who is attempting the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Network Infrastructure or Design exams. Real world network administrators will probably find this book sitting next to the DHCP server on your live Windows 2000 network, as it contains many step-by-step examples as well as a strong foundation in theory. Excellent coverage is given as well, to enabling downlevel clients to use DDNS in a mixed environment.

This "Dictionary of PC Hardware and Data Communications Terms" is really a great book for those that want to know more than just what an acronym stands for. All the entries are longer discussions of the technology, with loads of tables, dates, which companies support the technology, where the technology is standardized, what it competes with and what its shortcomings are. And all entries have cross-references to related entries in the book, and most have World Wide Web references as well. I use this dictionary for two years. Today it is old but still not dead.

Great to learn all the data terms

I would have to say that this is the most used book in my office. We have the data down pat, but the telco's have so many terms and acronyms that I would not be able to talk to a telco person if I was not able to look up the TLA's after the conversation. I highly recommend this book to anyone - from beginner to the advanced.

This book provides a complete exposition of digital logic analysis and synthesis. The author presents a thorough coverage on Verilog HDL as it applies to combinational logic, sequential logic, and computer arithmetic design. Error detection and correction is also included and covers Hamming code, CRC code, residue checking, and parity prediction with Verilog designs for Hamming code and residue checking. A great book from which to learn logic design and Verilog HDL.

Mr. Cavanagh has another winning book!

A great book to learn how to design logic circuits, both combinational and sequential. The author provides excellent coverage on designing logic circuits using Verilog HDL, including built-in primitives, dataflow modeling, behavioral modeling, and structural modeling. Functional decomposition and iterative arrays are designed using both traditional methods and Verilog. As a student, I especially like the appendix which provides a comprehensive selection of answers to many problems.

Unfortunatly I arrived at Virginia Commonwealth University's graphic design program after Phil Meggs had passed away. His legacy still lives on. Rob Carter on the other hand has been my professor. He is a great man who pushes his students into experimenting and becoming comfortable with their own styles of design. He is by no means a "stuffy" guy. I have some of their books and I don't have one problem with them at all.

By the way, this book is a good one!

A Very Useful Book

The Digital Designer is a quality publication , plus it covers enough ground to be useful in all of the classes we teach, so students going through the program will probably keep it and use it in several classes.

Your text is written in a friendly, accessible tone, and is a relief from some of the stuffy "Design is the Center of the Universe" books out there. As an example stuffy books are anything by Stephen Heller, Phil Meggs, or Rob Carter.

Their books are really good, of course, but frankly too focused on defining design as an official profession. Their books to me always seem like they are stiffly trying to define design as a formal, codified, yet creative event.

You seem to have achieved that friendly informative tone with ease. Kudos to you on your well resolved text. Frankly, this book is more useful to our program than any Rob Carter book, because of its accessibility.

Ms. Carlson's book, Digital Media in the Classroom is a breath of fresh air in this world of techno-babble and deliberately dense teaching materials. Taking the students (and their instructor!) on a step by step journey through the world of digital tools and applications, Ms. Carlson has provided the classroom teacher with a clear, concise, and easy to follow map through the maze that has come to be known as Technology Education. Without making the reader feel like a complete techno-idiot, concepts are clarified, techniques demonstrated, and student efforts are validated in a relaxed yet efficent manner. Brava Ms. Carlson! Many Thanks!

Digital Media in the Classroom should be in the hands of every teacher in every subject K-12. We are in the 21st century and to connect with students today it is critical we engage students with digital tools. Technology should not exist in isolation from the core courses and Gigi Carlson clearly outlines how we can bring content "alive" in every subject. The book provides a wealth of examples which can be easily implemented in any classroom. Digital Media in the Classroom will bring a bit of magic into any class by taking any static national or state standard and making it "interactive" for you and your students.

A secret gem of a book

I feel really lucky to have stumbled across this book. It is not Lingo heavy, but tells you all the little tricks to making Director work for you, including what is the best movie format for your target audience, how to mask movies, how to control sound with simple commands, and much more. The author has a genuine enthusiasm for his subject matter, and he plainly has a lot of experience in designing multimedia interfaces with Director. His advice is straight from the field, and that's invaluable. His generous sharing of experience steers you away from frustrating mistakes that would otherwise drive you crazy. This book tells you all the cool, juicy stuff you need to know to make presentations with Director. You will not become a Lingo God, but if you are a beginner, you will advance to intermeadiate and borderline advanced levels with the knowledge gained from this book. And the author makes it all seem so easy - which it is!

This is a great book for web and multimedia developers. I have been using Flash and Dreamweaver, but saw a demo on what Director can do for the web. Although this book cover more than developing for the web, there's a ton of information to build the coolest interactive Shockwave sites. This book was extremely easy to follow. The section about the games and how to build them quickly was amazing. This book is worth getting.

Indispensible tool for Macromedia Director users

This book is an indispensible tool for users of Macromedia Director. We found it to be easy to use, clearly written, and a great resource for all those third-party Xtras that extend Director's capabilities. Because this is a 'reference' book, at the office this book is usually hard to find because it makes the rounds so often. (I'd recommend you purchase more than one copy if you are in an office environment.) I think what I like best is that Director users of any experience level can benefit from this book--from novices adding new transitions to experts using the book's extensive Lingo libraries. Good developing!

Solid Information From a Multimedia Veteran

Far too many computer books on the market are written by so-called "computer book authors" who "play" with the software that is the subject of their books. Rich Shupe is not one of those authors. If you wade through this dense resource you quickly realize that the author not only uses the software products covered but is also intimately familiar with them from the perspective of a hardcore developer who has lived and struggled through the multimedia revolution. The knowledge presented in this book is equally matched by the straightforward and easy to understand presentation from the author. If you need to understand Director...and you need to make it work for your clients and your prjects...this is a treasure trove of information. Let's hope that more of the so-called software oriented books can live up to the standard Rich Shupe has set with his Director Xtras book.

Coming from someone who only buys "Dummies" books, I decided to try this book instead, mainly because the easy-to-follow steps where much more colorful and simpler than the "Dummies" books. I was so glad I purchased "Easy Powerpoint!" I wish they had one for Corel!! I went through the entire book, using the authors examples and was a pro in less than 8 hours! It covered most of the material which is in "Creating Cool Powerpoints," but was much easier to read and follow along with. I wish this series was as widely distributed as the "Dummies, and Idiot's" titles.

I bought this book for my parents just after I helped them buy their first PC. With a couple of short lessons from me and this book, my mom is now happily creating folders and saving, copying, and moving files, etc. This book was a perfect introduction to the WinME operating system for them. Mom says it is a great reference tool too, for when she can't remember exactly how to do something (and can't get me on the phone). I would highly recommend it for all who are new to computers.

A word of warning to new computer users, however. This book is an introduction to the WinME operating system. It will NOT teach you to use your word processing or spreadsheet software. You will need a separate book for that. (Might I suggest _Microsoft_Works_Basics_ by Pasewark, if that's the software you have. Once again, this has Mom's and my stamps of approval.)

Also, if you're simply upgrading to WinME from an earlier operating system, this book will be too basic for you.

Once again Shelley O'Hara has written the best how to book available.

Easy to read. Easy to understand. Easy to apply.

I am an instructor for the Denver Public Library. I teach a class called "How to Buy a Computer" we have offered this class many times over the last two years and I have recommended the earlier "Easy Windows 98", now QUE has come through with the next upgrade with their best author. I will now suggest, as I have in the past, when you buy your computer you must also buy this book: "Easy Windows Millennium" it is as necessary as a surge protector.
