This book has exceptional detail, all the way from debug routines to determine hardware addresses, to assembly and C programs to control the hardware. Numerous schematics and timing tables are also provided. Usually, several books are needed to provide the breadth and depth that this book provides. This book is succinct enough to present virtually all the information I need to dig into PC hardware. If you want to know exactly what is happening in the guts of the IBM PC compatible: from the BIOS calls, to interrupt servicing, to the chips that interface the PC to memory, to the exact timing of the strobe line on the printer port, you should get this book.

I found this book very helpful. The author makes a consistent effort to use the drawings, templates and tools that ship with Illustrator and use them creatively. The book is especially helpful for projects that need to be completed in a very short time. None of the art or templates is used as is; they are all modified and adapted to the task at hand. I highly recommend this book to the advanced beginner or intermediate Illustrator user.

I confess. My library (ok the bathroom) is stacked with Archie comics for the occasional pastime while taking care of things. My latest edition is this book for the sole reason that there is just too much to absorb at one sitting. Nor will I use this book as a desktop reference tool while working on a deadline. I need to absorb all this great information over time, like the multipication table.
The book have something that usually is loathly missing in most. It give you paths to the command that is speaks of in the relevant question/answer sections regarding particular needs (Q. How do I resized a batch of various sized images. A. Use Fit Image (File > Automate > Fit Image - course there is more to this than that, but you get the drift).
Great guns. A keeper for me and other professionals who count on Photoshop to make the mortgage. BTW the Archies stay as well.

Unlike Blatner&Frasers Real World book on Photoshop CS this one is set up for the intermediate or even the beginning photoshopper.Where the Real World Books gets in depth information on each item this well explained book gives you the opportunity to learn easy-to-follow answers on a lot of beginners questions:
-page 1-28:all about photoshop essentials(upgrading smoothly, control&menus, windows&palettes, monitors, tools, editing objects and handling documents.
-page 29-48: getting the picture:creating and opening files, exploring camera raw, scanning
-page 49-84:image editing basics(resolution,cropping,selection strategies,amazing transformations,duplicating)
-page 87-123:correcting images(evaluating an image,making global corrections,making local corrections,maintaining image quality,productivity perks,sharpening,actions&batches)
-page 125-139:working with layers(managing layers,aligning layers,layer masks,combining images)
-page 141-154: working with type(creating &editing type, get set with type)
-page 155-179:enhancing creativity(brushes,filter fun,perspective&distortion,darkroom adventures,paths&the pen)
-page 181-194: keeping color consistent(setting up color, previewing color output, color space conversions)
-page 195-212:organizing&finding images(building your bridge,annotating&organizing,fast file finding,production practices)
-page 215-244:printing,saving&exporting(printing,images for other programs, store multiple variations in one file, images for the internet,it's showtime)
-index page 245-253
David Blatner& Conrad Chavez did a tremendous job grouping hundreds of tips in 244 pages. Each chapter starts with a red question mark next to an individual question like ...?Is it true you can actually use the Crop Tool to correct perspective in an image or...?Tell me about the new Smart Sharpen command. How is it different than Unsharp Mask?Do I use it with Unsharp Mask or instead of it? or...?Infrared images look realy cool. How can I simulate that effect in Photoshop?
The book is in a handy format and each item is a small tutorial with the necessary examples illustrated on the page.
Don't read it from cover to flap(your choice!) because it's no covering "every feature" in PS but use it as a reminder for practical problems you encounter daily.
I put it on my night table and when I dream about PS(i'm insane!)and don't find THAT solution according my dreams it still lays on my side and I can dream further without worrying that my dreampicture would'nt achieve.
By the way this book is applicable for problems with CS and CS2;the content is worth the price.Well done gurus!

Great book for designer and technical architect, the presentation of the book is very good, it go through the guidelines, implementation examples and case studies in nice and simple way support by good charts, graphs and tables. That is one of few books in the market which cover all the phases of software life cycle including analysis, application architectures and design... Its easy to read and understand, but hard to find in the books stores, my guess its one of the great books I had in my library from couple of years.

The author made no assumptions regarding the reader's technical knowledge. Thus, he provides a comprehensive guide beginning with the fundamentals of application re-engineering to the technical details of Web development; e.g., CGI and JAVA. Experienced architects will rejoice, because finally someone put all the information needed in one book. Those who are inexperienced with architectures or re-engineering can sit down and learn how all the different pieces fit together. This is the only book I have ever seen that puts all the pieces of application architecture and system design together tjat is easy to read, easy to understand, and steps through each part of the process. Well done!

This book has to be the best general guide for cycling. It takes you through all the steps of how to buy the bike that suits you, what accessories to get and what not to waste money on. It also explains how to setup your bike properly before you take your first ride. All in an easy to understand everyday English. I would recommend only to beginners, but veterans may find some useful information as well.

It covers everything from how to find a bike that fits you, to what accessories you really need, to how to plan an exercise program once you get the bike, to how to repair it yourself. And not only is it a good resource, but it's also a pleasure to read! Allen St. John is a funny writer who really enjoys his subject, making the book easy to read and very entertaining- it makes you want to go out and buy a bike the very second you start reading it!

Despite Microsoft's claims that their vaunted "focus groups" and client experience consultants have allowed them to offer us painless computing, you and the rest of the world know it isn't true. Waiting for Windows XP or Vista to boot up and shut down certainly are irritations in themselves worth a hack or two.
As you can imagine, this is a large book. That is not just the number of pages (650) but also the format -- of the fold-flat variety. This big book of hacks is easy to work with physically.
The editorial review on this page describes the contents well except that I would alter "contains more than 100 hacks" to "contains almost 200 hacks." Quite a difference.
The writing is clear and informed. I'm sure you have read many of Gralla's magazine contributions over the years. Be sure that the book is not all text. There are plenty of illustrations and even photos (for the hardware hacks) to guide you. The hacks themselves are directed at all versions of Windows, with the focus on XP and Vista.
Consider this book a compendium of all those tips you always rip out of your computer magazine subscriptions to save -- then lose track of. Here they are, all in one place, not easily lost given the size of this book!

I was pleasantly surpised when I realized that it not only answered the questions I had, but it provided a lot more information from home based to wide area solutions. I also found the style very readable and not filled with the typical techno jargon. Great stuff.

Being a digital design engineer, I wanted a book that would provide an insight into the way caches are used to solve the classic memory bandwidth problem. This book completely matched my expectations and more! It starts with a overview chapter that already touches most aspects that are involved with cache functionality. It ends with a real-world schematic of a simple (but working!) cache implementation of a 68020 procesor. The second chapter is a killer one and focusses in-depth on the tricks that can be used for squeeze more performance out of the basic cache implementation and the issue that might pop up. The first two chapters contained the information that I was really looking for. Chapter three handles some differences between RISC and CISC processor. Only 11 pages, a bit dated. Chapter four concentrates on cache coherency in multi-processor designs and some ways to solve problems. These are topics that I didn't have to deal with in the past. Interesting stuff! Finally, a chapter is devoted to some tricks that have been used to solve very specific problems. I found the book is balanced, well written and was detailed enough to satisfy my needs.

This book is not for absolute beginner, however. An understanding of 8086 to 386 Microprocessor is required before you can understand the material presented in this book. The first book of Mindshare PC System Architecture Series called "ISA System Architecture" provides more than enough background to read this book. Since this book is out of print, the publisher, Mindshare, decided to post the free PDF version on their website.
