Review from a former studentReview Date: 2008-02-14
An excellent read for anyone interested in embedded systems!Review Date: 2008-05-09
A book every embedded systems engineer should ownReview Date: 2008-05-08
The materials presented in this book walks you through the entire hardware/software thought process that is applicable to any engineering design. The book stresses the importance of developing a modular high-level design before any implementation - and to consider things such as use cases, extreme cases, scalability, performance, and safety. The book also goes over the importance of documentation - how to properly read and write design specifications/requirements, block diagrams, timing diagrams, etc.
In addition, the book covers the nitty-gritty details of digital implementation - from basic boolean algebra to complex kernel programming. The book also covers debugging/testing processes and common mistakes to avoid in embedded system development - backed with real-life examples. Finally, sample projects included in the book allow the reader to see and implement projects on their own.
The writing style makes the text an easy-read and the numerous diagrams and examples solidifies the concepts presented.
I highly recommend this book to any embedded systems engineer.

Practical Hands on UMLReview Date: 2008-09-14
It is of great help if one needs to get some practical, hands on experience, since it provides detailed information related to UML's usage (the book presents two pretty complete examples - Coyote Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and Roadrunner Traffic Light Controller). I'd say it is invaluable to be used with other theoretical books on UML.
It presents Harmony (Douglass and Hoffman's Systems and Software Engineering Process) and the accompanying CD has Rhapsody, a good modeling tool, along with all examples used throughout the book.
I recommend it for both students and practitioners.
Hope this helps!
many examples of applying UMLReview Date: 2007-03-29
For added motivation, the examples are all drawn from designing embedded systems. When, for example, you might see a state diagram, with all the states laid out. In general, UML is not confined to this field. Any given example could easily be re-imagined, with the UML boxes redone for other fields.
The format of having questions with comprehensive answers will be very helpful to some readers. Most books on UML simply don't bother doing this. Which might be valid for experienced programmers. But for neophytes, this book could be a better read.
Excellent! There is no RT-UML without reading Douglass books.Review Date: 2007-04-03
Perhaps the two case studies treated in the book are not the best choice the author could make. Nevertheless, these books are corner-stones for model-driven design

A map for the consumer storage technology mazeReview Date: 2008-07-18
It covers the principles and implementation of disk, optical and solid state storage in a wide renge of devices from GPS devices to DVR's.
Data storage is one of the least-understood, most undervalued and poorly publicized technologies of modern times.
Perhaps the industry has been so busy creating all this magic that we haven't taken the time to secure appropriate media coverage.
It's refreshing to see a broad view and Tom Coughlin presents technical descriptions, market data and real applications in a highly readable way.
My personal favorites are the block diagrams and internal photos of devices and systems.
The technical level of this book is a good match for a range of audiences including engineering, marketing and sales people. Students will also find it a valuable map to a bewildering complexity of concepts.
It provides enough technical detail to grasp how these things actually work, while avoiding mathematics and simultaneously positioning the technologies in an articulate and interesting way.
Thorough guide to storage and integration in consumer electronicsReview Date: 2008-07-09
I then wanted to create a digital storage hierarchy for consumer electronics as a guide to which storage device or devices should be used for various consumer applications. Rules for the choice and integration of digital storage in consumer devices are laid out for the reader/designer.
Sections explore the design of digital storage in both mobile and static consumer devices. These sections are well illustrated by block diagrams and pictures of torn-down products showing the design and digital storage integration.
I also explore the drivers for digital storage growth in consumer applications and how those will change with the growth of richer user generated as well as commercial content, with changing storage devices and with entirely new applications. These new applications will be enabled by new digital storage technology as well as advances in mobile power, networking and processing power.
Looking into the future consumer devices are described that will cause huge growth of user generated content in the home as well as sharing and social networking driving increased storage demand as folks throughout the net share their experiences and content. As the amount and complexity of personal and commercial content increases there will be an increasing need for organizing and indexing this material (automated metadata generation) as well as reducing the physical complexity of managing content across a great many devices in the home. The book suggests how these challenges can be met.
Finally I wanted to provide the reader resources to explore these topics further. I also include information on various trade and standards groups working on all aspects of digital storage and consumer electronics. I enjoyed writing this book and hope that readers and educators will find this book useful. Thank you for reading this review and I hope that you will enjoy the book as well.
Data Storage for the MassesReview Date: 2008-06-20
Having tracked and contributed to (he has six patents relating to storage) this development over the past 25 years, Tom Coughlin is well positioned to examine the diversity of storage technologies that have evolved for consumer-level products. Minaturized hard disks, optical storage, solid state memory devices and flash technology are enabling new consumer products that were inconceivable a few decades ago. Digital storage for MP3 players, video players, digital photography and other products are empowering consumers by allowing them to tailor their media to their own tastes and to have it constantly available.
Although this book has substantial technical content for interested engineers, it also provides lucid explanations of digital storage technologies that will be of interest to non-technical readers as well. This book is Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Recommended Reading for anyone wanting to under the next large wave of digital storage applications.

Images and more...Review Date: 2005-10-27
There is a logical flow in how information is presented. First a basic description of the algorithm. Second some Matlab or pseudo-code. Then third he describes exactly how to implement it on the c6x dsp. Not only are there implementation details but also interfacing explanation for both Matlab and Visual Studio.
Overall this is an excellent book for getting a project up and running in a timely fashion.
A well laid out introduction to embedded image processingReview Date: 2005-08-13
Starting with an overview of the tools involved and the C6x architecture, Qureshi moves into simple image processing concepts, such as contrast stretching and window/level processing. After clearly explaining the concept and the implementation, the reader is led through the process of optimizing the code for the DSP environment. Later topics, such as edge detection and wavelets leave the reader with a clear understanding of the fundamentals of image processing, as well as code examples that make implementation a breeze.
Overall, an excellently written book and a must for anyone interested in image processing, whether on TI DSPs or not.

Top Notch Reference for Engineers and ManagersReview Date: 2003-07-02
It's helpful that this one book spans the areas of hardware and software, real-time and embedded, and project management. Since buying it I've been keeping it handy, right on my desk. I'm back on Amazon today ordering copies for the engineers on my team. The book's figures, code listings, equations, etc. should hopefully make their work easier. And we'll finally be able to communicate better about what needs to be done.
Help for the the NewbieReview Date: 2003-07-11
As with most engineering disciplines, embedded systems designers have their own language. What we didn't have, until now, was a dictionary for the language. "Embedded Systems Dictionary" is the book that every Embedded Systems Engineer should have at their desk, even if they cover it in a plain brown wrapper.
As with any dictionary, you will not get an extensive discourse on a word or term that is puzzling you. However, you will get a really good starting point so that you can do some extensive research later. In fact, I noticed that a number of the entries also included references as well.
As I read through the book I was really impressed by the completeness of it. I was able to come up with only one term, "n-wire", that wasn't included included.
Finally, two very minor quibbles. I found a few explanations that were as arcane as the concept that they were trying to define ( see "H-infinity filter" ) and a few that were so basic ( "average" ) you have to wonder.
In summary, this is a much-needed text for a technical subject area that has more than its share of jargon. I highly recommend it.

Everything you need to know about embedded computersReview Date: 2003-01-02
The report expects EmNets to quite possibly dwarf previous milestones in the information revolution. It sees IT eventually becoming an invisible component of almost everything in everyone's surroundings. This 236-page report explores the potential of EmNets and the research challenges they present. It describes the many ways in which these emerging networks operate under unique constraints not present in more traditional distributed systems such as the Internet. A comprehensive, systems-oriented research agenda is presented along with recommendations to major federal funding agencies.
See the futureReview Date: 2002-02-11
Research Council is routinely put into that position nevertheless--
and we're better off for it. This work, "Embedded, Everywhere", is
a work from some of the top people in Computer Science today and
attempts to identify the issues relating to a world saturated with
computing resources.
EmNets, networked systems
of embedded computers, are the central
theme of the book. This isn't science fiction. Some of what is
discussed in
the work is already touching our lives. "It should
come as no surprise that the modern automobile is already a rolling
network
of embedded computers. In model year 2001, cars have
between 20 and 80 microprocessors controlling everything from the
running
of the engine to the break system to the deployment of
the airbags." While this certainly presents technical challenges,
there
are ethical ones as well. "Few automobile drivers, for
example, are currently aware that many cars collect and store
information
about the way the car has been driven (e.g., driving
speed, acceleration, engine speed). This information can be used
by
manufacturers to better analyze accidents and, hence, improve
safety but could also be used to disallow warranty claims
or to
prove that an automobile was operated in an unsafe manner."
Today's computing systems are complex and in amazing
places. Yet,
the book makes the following assertion: "...as the rest of this
report makes clear, incremental improvement
to today's solutions
will not suffice to realize the full potential of EmNets." The
book then goes on to identify those
problem areas and to make
specific recommendations for research into solving those problems.
The book has an impressive
list of authors. Deborah Estrin,
professor of CS at UCLA was the committee chair and
was backed up by Mark Horowitz
of Stanford, Barbara Liskov of MIT
and others from academia. This wasn't just some university exercise,
however. Industry
was also well represented on the effort with the
likes of Jerry Fiddler (founder and chairman of Wind River Systems),
Robert
Colwell (lead architect for the P6 at Intel), and Jim Waldo
(Sun Microsystems and developer of the first CORBA ORB and
later
Jini Network Technology), to name a few.
There is a hard-edged, practical feel to the extensive discussions
in
this small book. Technical, architectural, methodological, social,
and ethical concerns are explored in depth.
Predicting
the future is difficult. Luckily, you don't need to.
Just follow the research initiatives and they will light the path.
