Searching through the items I have purchased here at Amazon in the past I came upon a disturbing site: Someone had rated this book with 2 stars and claimed to be "interested in all aspects of algorithms and methods VLSI design automation". As you may see from below 13 out of 13 costumers ( I will be the 14th) seem to disagree or not find his comments all to helpful. I have rated this book with 5 starts in part to counteract this guy's horrible judgment and in part to make justice to a very well written book. At least that's what I thought after I first read it (during my sophomore year of college) after having finished an introduction course in Digital Design. What was nice about this book at the time was that it reinforced the basic concepts that my introductory course had left kind of hanging. This book is for the more mathematically inclined Computer Science or Electrical and Computer Engineering majors who want a more profound insight to digital design from small to large to very large integration. If you thought that just because it's a more theoretically oriented book it doesn't also provide good example you were of course wrong. There is a sizeable number of examples and best of all pseudo code of the algorithms which are explained here.
I hope this ACTUALLY helps

Very Useful and Interesting

The great thing about this book is that it is an extensive library of working circuits with component values. This provides an excellent service as a reference design for a circuit designer, i.e. a starting point for someone who already has design chops. If you lack design chops, probably better to reference one of the thousands of books written from the perspective of explaining the basics of circuit theory. This book was never intended to be a primer on the basics of circuit theory but instead a collection of reference designs vastly useful to a design engineer.

Collection of amplifier circuits, but no theory or design.

This book is just a collection of amplifier circuits from magazine articles and manufacturer databooks. Each circuit is accompanied by a description, ranging from a sentence to a paragraph. There is no discussion of amplifier design or theory, although some of the circuit descriptions contain brief explanations of the topology. I was very disappointed, because I wanted to learn about amplifier design. If you are just looking for a circuit, this book might be of some value, especially since it lists the original sources for all of the circuits.

A celebrated model of memory in cognitive science.

This book presents the latest version of ACT-R, which is at present the most elaborated and most widely applied formal model of human memory and complex cognitive performance. Anderson's ACT-R theory is the sort of theory Cognitive Science should aim at: comprehensive, compact and elegant. This book not only describes the theory, but also shows it is successful in many different domains of cognitive sience.

Where's the atomic components?

I know Anderson is supposed to be one of the great thinkers in thought but I take issue with his title..If you're going to name a book Atomic Components of x, then you need to offer something resembling atomic components???? For example, physics gives us atoms, quarks, leptons, etc. Chemistry the Periodic Table of Elements...Are "memory," "knowledge representation," "performance," "learning," "the visual interface," or any of Anderson's other chapters really atomic components. These all seem to be large, general concepts rather than atomic, "unsplittable" componenentry...The book itself is worth the read for academics and the like but if you judge a book by its title, Anderson misses the mark.

A good book on I/O design!

Today it is hard to find a book dealing with ESD and IO design comprehensively, and this book is a make-up. It covers ESD theories, prevention techniques and layout, basic IO transceiver design, mixed-voltage IO cell design and etc. Unfortunately, the authors did not address some of the designs in depth, as its title is "Basic ESD and I/O Design".

If you are designing i/o design this is the book that you want to have. After reviewing basic concepts provided by the book, you can improve your esd io sturecture by a few 1kv. It has excellent design examples for ESD I/O from grounded gate MOS devices to SCR. This book however needs to address low capacitance ESD I/O sturecture for RF application.

I ordered this book because I'm starting out in leading a choir. I'm having problems with the group blending together and thought this book could give me practical advice on how to do that. Either I don't get it or this book is not well written. Perhaps, a CD demonstrating the points would have been helpful.

Every time I picked this book up, I found myself being wowed by a simple, but powerful new idea in vocal blend. I highly recommend this book, as there aren't any others quite like it.

Book works well in a classroom format when you have time to go over the various waveforms. The Instructor package has several useful items.

William Kleitz takes a more practical approach which will benefit you now and prepare you better for the future, if you prefer digital over analog. Although I was forced to use Floyd's edition in college, Kleitz goes much deeper in detail for designing digital circuits taking small steps to learning, which then all come together as one. Generally speaking, all logic tables, using simple gates, their behavior appears static in all text books which are currently published. However, Kleitz reveals very interesting concepts and ideas, which appealed my interest in reading his book.
My experience with troubleshooting digital circuits leads me to believe that this a better overall text, no question about it. His remarkable approach, and style of teaching should be noted by all, but with most digital textbooks, most of them don't go beyond simple logic predictions, and material that never leaves the classroom floor. If your seeking advanced digital concepts with basic fundamentals included, then your best bet, is the text I'm reviewing here today by William Kleitz.

Excellent book

This book is far better than the more commonly known Electronics textbooks, because it treats more modern items in depth, f.i. modulators, PLL's, SC-filters, OTA's and transmissionline effects in digital circuits. The big advantage is that complicated matters are presented as simple as possible. The only disadvantage are the text-based Spice examples. Use of PSpice Version 8.0 would be more up to date. For Digital electronics you usually take a specialized book, so this subject could be omitted.

It is such a shame that this book is out of print now!

Lots of material but could be presented better

I used this book in an electronic circuits class taught by the author. I great deal of information is covered, but not very well. There are not enough examples and the practical applications are not emphasized (could've been more SPICE explanations). The book is very theory heavy so it will go over well with profs, but there are a lot better books out there for those outside academia or those just wanting a second source with their own textbook. (Art of Electronics has the right presentation style but is getting way out of date).

I was looking for a good reference book on filter design and got several samples sent to my Kindle and liked this one the best. He is very clear in his terminology and ideas the book covers a good deal of information.

The poor rating is given do to the size of the pictures. There is a particular picture showing LC filters that would be wonderful, but the text/symbols are way to small and using the Kindle zoom feature resolves nothing. There were several other pictures throughout that were like this.

Summary: Great text and information but the diagrams and things worth trying and testing are impossible to see.

good news, bad news

As the title states, this is a handbook and not a textbook. It summarizes a vast amount of information about filters without giving any derivations. It is best used by people who occasionally need a filter design.

The good news is that much additional information is included compared to previous editions.

The bad news is that the printing quality is lower than on previous editions. Many illustrations look like multiple generation photocopies. The binding quality is lower so you will have to be gentle with the book to keep in one piece. To be specific it is a paperback book with stiff covers.

The tables of elliptical filter data has been removed and replaced by a computer program.

It would have been nice to fill the CD with free filter programs available on the web. AADE is a good free LC filter program. Many IC companies have free active filter programs.

There is one blatantly false statement in the book. It claims to be the first easy to understand book on filters ever published. At least as long ago as 1960 there were easy to understand books on filters that also included design tables. One famous one was by Van Valkenburg and another by Kuo.

ESD Control

I had this book when in relation to my studies in ESD control. This book however, deals more with the mathematical description of ESD protection on circuits and ESD protection in the design of circuits. It was a little bit too theoritical for my needs at that time, since I was more incline on materials dealing with EPA design and ESD management.

It's good for you who are interested in ESD..

Recently, I studied the CMOS layout. And I attended at the project about that. I fel the need to know the ESD phenomeon. At that time, I found this book. I understood this phenomenon and the ways to protect it easily. Because the book provided many graphs and photos and it treated the phenomenon in depth relatively. But this book didn't deal with the antenna diode issues. The importance of the antenna diode issues increases. So I hope that the authers will publish new edition.

On the whole, I am satisfied with this book.

Not a good book for ATE
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-20
It seems to me it is just a summary of work done by others in
the ATE field over the years. The explanations of how a device
fault is detected are not clear in most of the cases presented
in the book. The book emphasizes too much on fault
modeling but not enough on test applications and techniques.

Certainly not a good text book for students nor it
is a good book for ATE engineers. However, if you are looking
for some quick reference, this book is a good place to start
because it contains brief summaries of other people's work.

Excellent textbook for VLSI testing.

Review Date: 2003-04-19
This book is, as far as I know, the most comprehensive texbook on VLSI testing available at the moment. It is based on current trends and techniques in the field. After all, the authors are pioneers in this area. A worthy successor to Abramovici's earlier textbook, which, I think is beginning to look increasingly archaic. As a guy who's taken a course in testing by the authors (we were the guinea pigs for the book, actually)and is currently working in the VLSI testing area, I strongly recommend it to anyone looking to build strong testing fundamentals.
