As a News Director at a top TV market, it is crucial I provide sound advise to my young reporters about their responsibilities
and liabilities when pursuing a story. The First Ammendment and the Fith Estate should be requiered reading for all young
journalists (and even some older journalists could refresh their knowledge with this book). I look forward to the next
edition as we face a whole new world with Cybernews and DTV.

Cable was a Southern writer, born in New Orleans and a Confederate soldier, best known today (if known at all) for his local
color stories about the Creoles of Louisiana and the novel THE GRANDISSIMES, about two feuding Creole families around the
time of the Louisiana Purchase. Cable was also a reformer, especially for prison reforms and equal treatment of blacks in
the South; this latter view, made public in books such as THE SILENT SOUTH (1885), caused much outrage in the South. He believed
that the separation of the races and especially the desire in the South to keep blacks "beneath" whites in all things was
damaging to both races. Cable was also a very religious man and was very active in the church. Despite his popularity as an
author and lecturer (he toured successfully with Mark Twain), Cable was often in debt, living on advances for his writing.
Turner relates Cable's trials and tribulations, and his successes, very well in this biography. He writes well, never allowing
his research to get in the way of his commanding style. Later in his career Cable wished to write stories that "make you feel
today that you are enterained, and find tomorrow that you are profited." Turner's biography does just that. Highly recommended.

The best thing about Golden Cables of Sympathy is that it introduces many more questions than it answers. The real historians
who'll review this book will praise its scope (75 years, dozens of countries and the works of hundreds of women), its research
(McFadden visited libraries on three continents, and even went so far as to search an Irish courthouse to uncover the death
certificate of Anna Doyle Wheeler, whose date of death had been lost), and its indisputable place in women's history. But
I more appreciate the fact that Golden Cables of Sympathy will open doors for many college students. Undergraduate history
majors and master's candidates will find a hundred topics that beg for further research and analysis. Golden Cables of Sympathy
treats many of the "stars" of women's history (George Sand, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Margaret Fuller, Harriet Martineau and
others), but students will profit more from learning for the first time about Ernestine Rose, Phoebe Palmer, Anna Knight
and more who were absolutely part of the developing women's movement; they influenced, assisted, argued with, changed and
were changed by those with more familiar names. McFadden's book (and the depth of her research), will surely generate more
discovery, and her research lays the groundwork for a generation of great student work. Read this book for pleasure, but
read first for inspiration.

Welcome to the Hollywood that your teachers, parents, and the media never told you about. It wasn't that these influential
propagators of information didn't want to keep this information a secret from you: they simply didn't know any better. Janet
Wasko takes readers on a journey through the history of the business side of Hollywood--who owns what, which companies are
in bed with one another and how those hegemonic relationships influence which programs and information make it past these
media "gatekeepers" into the mainstream. Be prepared to have your eyebrows raised and your jaw dropped when Wasko reveals
the intricate relationships maintained between media outlets (such as Disney and ABC) that play up on their rivalry in public,
but are partners on the sidelines. The title of this book does it no justice: this book is chock-full of information and is
a must-read for media, journalism and film students and those interested in critical history.

Peter Goessing has a long career in fiber cable engineering at both Siecor (now part of Corning) in the US and Siemens in Germany.
Readers who just want to learn more about installing fiber cable in the field or designing a building fiber network would probably be better off with one of the books by Hayes or Pearson that are oriented more towards end-users.
