As the adventure travel industry continues to boom so we're seeing a lot of new titles on sports that were once considered extreme but are now happily prospering with regular infusion of new thrill-seekers.

Addison's welcome book does two things. Firstly it's a guide for people who've never been near a river, raft or expedition but who, after spending enough time watching the Explorers' channel, would very much like to "do" a river. This, it does well. Addison has had a long involvement with the Southern African Rivers Association, notably as an instructor, and it shows in this book. He has left nothing out, even so far as to give a brief history of rafting. There is a chapter on rivers themselves, which introduces the finer aspects of what rivers are made of and how they work.

It's all there, illustrated with the kind of pictures - eight-person rafts plunging through the turmoil of clear-fast rivers - that will inspire the curious.

But it's not only a beginner's book. Later chapters discuss in detail how to plan and execute river expeditions and how to run commercial rafting trips. Of course commercial rafters should know all this stuff already it won't hurt to read-up on capsize drills or test what you thought you knew about safety and rescue.

The book should have universal appeal. In fact the publishers, New Holland, have aimed it at rafters everywhere, with generic pictures ranging from the Colorado River in the US to the good old Zambezi. Although not dealt with in sufficient detail, there is a small section describing some of the world's finest - or at least better known - whitewater runs.

There's enough meat here for everyone, even the experienced river gods. You never know what new things you might learn.

I had been looking for a descriptive book like this for almost 6 months before I spoke with Mark and he offered it as a solution to a large cable networking job that I had to do and had NO idea of the procedure. HE WAS RIGHT, in that the book would walk me thru it and even better, I learned what I was doing quicker than taking a class. This book is LONG overdue. Great addition to your technical library

New reprint of the classic 1865 book on the Atlantic Telegraph

Written in 1865 by the war correspondent of the Times (London), William H. Russell, this book tells the story of the 1865 attempt to lay the Atlantic Cable from the Great Eastern, Brunel's mammoth ship converted to cable laying for the purpose. After relating the details of the failed attempts to lay the cable in 1857/58, the book describes and illustrates the expedition of 1865. While it, too, ended in failure, it showed that the ship was capable of completing the task, and the cable was successfully laid the following year.

The original edition of this book is hard to find and priced beyond the means of most readers, and the 1975 reprint had only black and white illustrations, losing the depth and tone of the original tinted lithographs. Nonsuch Publishing/Trafalgar Square are to be commended for issuing this handsome reprint; while the illustrations are reduced in size from the originals, they are printed in high resolution on glossy paper, allowing the reader to appreciate the skill of the artist, Robert Dudley.

Russell's well-paced telling of the story and the availability of the full-colour illustrations for the first time in 140 years make this a book well worth owning.

Useful in the field, interesting in the armchair

This book possesses a lot of strengths, including a paragraph on the history and status of each bird, quick "ID" information, state range maps, and information (oten left out of other books) on habitat, nesting, and feeding. It lacks the field mark arrows and different phase illustrations of, say, the Peterson's or Sibley's guides but other than that it comes close to being an ideal concise source. The work is even interesting for "armchair" birding. I hope Lone Pine will be publishing additional books on additional regions.

The Partly Cloudy Industry

Communications researchers now have a definitive scholarly chronicle of the cable industry. Parsons delivers an immense and exhaustive history of the industry, from its earliest days as a small town community antenna service to the modern mega-conglomerates delivering hundreds of channels of on-demand programming. Here we learn that cable isn't much younger than broadcast television, and the two industries have had a fractious but symbiotic relationship, made more complex by interloping technologies like satellite transmission and the Internet. Decades of inconsistent regulation by the FCC have added to the complexity of the industry's relations with the public. Parsons combines his strict chronological political and business history with the social construction of technology as a theoretical backdrop, showing that the public's changing perceptions of cable's technical possibilities and programming choices are a key influence on the development of the industry and its modern structure and practices. This extensive and encyclopedic tome will prove to be essential for interested students of the field for years to come. [~doomsdayer520~]

An informative read...

Reading this book and working through the cd won't exactly make you a broadcasting star, but it definitely guides you at the required talents and qualifications for conforming to industry standards.

The cd-rom consists of video and audio segments or snippets as they are quite short on the average; it includes voice commentaries, installation videos, teleprompters, and practice media for you to develop your skills.

The book is and entertaining read with chapters on the history of broadcasting, the various types of broadcasting( radio dj, television, cable etc), the great broacasters, interviews, the biology of the human voice mechanism, techniques and the like.

Overall this book is definitely helpful in guiding towards the broadcasting industry and could be useful for students of mass communication and media studies.

This book provides a lot of infomarion about history, procedure, and broadcating technology itself in the United States. Currently, the area of broadcasting has been broaden into Internet. Web-casting is one of new types of broadcasting internationally. This 4th edition includes this new shapes of broadcasting on the Web.
