"The control of human retrovirus gene expression is a TOPIC OF CONSIDERABLE AND GROWING INTEREST IN THE BIOLOGICAL AND MEDICAL
RESEARCH COMMUNITY.
The frightening acquired immunodeficiency disease syndrome (AIDS) is caused by human retroviruses referred to as human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV).
The spectrum of cells infected by this virus and the manner in which these cells provide for the expression of resident HIV are issues that must be understood at the molecular level if directed, potent, therapeutic intervention into the AIDS cascade is to be a reality....."

The Series Just Keeps Getting Better

As you may know from my earlier reviews, my family and I are big fans of the "Crime Through Time" series of books. The plots
overall are really gripping, and the writing keeps it interesting for all ages.
"Trapped!" is the latest one I have read with my niece, and it may be the best yet. (It's hard to pick a favorite, though.) This one is a combination sci-fi and mystery novel involving art fraud aboard the futuristic Space Elevator. The story itself is great, with a driving, fast-paced plot with lots of twists and turns. What makes this series really great, I think, is the way it brings in scraps of info through sidebars and extra pages that my niece really loves. There's easy-to-understand mini-articles on everything from DNA to asteroids to John Wilkes Booth! It really connects the story line to whatever the kids might be studying in school without being distracting or too "educationsal" in the eyes of the kids. I highly recommend this book.

A wonderful "modern" book for the layman explaining the source of viruses and how viruses stress each other to produce new
viruses and how they may be transmitted to us to cause new diseases.

DNA Viruses: A Practical Approach describes in complete detail all of the major experimental methods currently employed to
study DNA viruses, from the fundamentals of virus culture to novel techniques such as surface plasmon resonance spectrometry
and real-time PCR analysis of drug resistance mutations. The book begins by describing the culture of DNA viruses and the
extraction, purification and characterization of virus DNA. Other topics then covered include virus genome mapping; correlation
of genotype with phenotype; sequence analysis; mutagenesis of DNA virus genomes; identification and purification of proteins
involved in DNA virus replication; analysis of virus replication at the molecular level; analysis of viral gene transcription
and its control; identification and study of trans-acting regulatory proteins; identification, purification and characterization
of viral cytokine-binding proteins; analysis of DNA virus proteins involved in neoplastic transformation; the development
of DNA virus vectors for gene delivery; chemotherapy of DNA virus infections. This volume is authoritative, comprehensive
and fully up-to-date. It is an essential laboratory manual and reference for all those working on DNA viruses whether in
academia, industry or clinical research.

This book presents an excellent comprehensive review of historical and current research on hepatitis C viruses. The book is
expensive, but of outstanding value. Each chapter is well written by an acknowledged expert in the field and authoritative,
providing valuable references to a large body of work. I am pleased to recommend this book to anyone working in viral pathogenesis,
viral genomics and antiviral research, as well as infectious disease physicians and educators in virology.

this book is well-written, in plain terms. it gives you more then the cold, hard facts. personal stories, emotions, and the author's take on issues concerning being HIV+ and living with AIDS.
this book isn't dry at all, rather a book that really helps you think about how you can make a difference, and how to give respect and dignity to those who are living with AIDS or HIV.
