Chemo Cat

Chemo Cat is a wonderful and much needed resource. Mom's newly diagnosed with breast cancer (or any kind of cancer for that matter) who have young children will find this book immensely helpful as they try to deal with their health and well being as well as their child's well being. This book helps you talk about what is happening in terms a young child can understand. It is meant to be a conversation starter and is just that.

James Legge was a 19th-century Scottish missionary to China. This is his translation of the "Four Books" and three of the "Five Classics." The translations are dated, and Legge's interpretations of the texts are often old-fashioned, but these are still important and useful translations.

Of the "Five Classics," Legge translates the Book of Documents (a collection of historical texts), the Spring and Autumn Annals (another historical work; Legge also includes his translation of the Tso Commentary on this), and the Book of Odes. (The other two of the five are the Record of Rites and the I Ching, which Legge also translated, but which are not in this collection.) The "Five Classics" have been central texts of Confucianism since about the time of Christ.

The "Four Books" are the Great Learning, the Analects of Confucius, the sayings of the later Confucian Mencius, and the Doctrine of the Mean. These texts are all quite old, but they were grouped together, and made the basis of the Confucian educational curriculum, around the 12th century A.D.

Part of what makes Legge's translations so helpful is that he includes the Chinese text, along with extensive interpretive notes, introductions, and glossaries. This can be a little overwhelming for the beginner, but it's fun to have all the information in one place.

One caution: This set is normally in 5 volumes. I assume that this edition has combined the 1st and 2nd volumes (the "Four Books") into one volume, but it is possible that this edition does not include all that I think it does.

As an `outed' former Christian Scientist, I am especially intrigued with this book. I left the Christian Science Movement, to which I had devoted endless hours and years of service, because I realized that I was a homosexual male in a very unfriendly church. I record this parting in "Worth the Room: An Autobiography of Survival and Service."

Bruce Stores has taken on the mammoth task of recording the history of the Gay movement outside and within The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, MA. Exciting landmarks of progress for gender related issues in the public forum, publishing, and personal lives fill this book to the overflow. There is nary a page that dulls the mind!

Christian Science: Its Encounter with Lesbian/Gay America is well documented, expertly researched and annotated, and thoughtfully balanced in its approach. Never does it denigrate the Church, its employees, directors or members. This is a positive portrayal of things as they have been and as they are. Every single person who has ever been touched by Christian Science-or any homophobic church-should read this book. It will become the landmark of documented persecution-subtle and otherwise-for eons to come.

Peter Spier's "Christmas" is a classic. Have been searching for a good copy for my children. The warmth of Spier's illustrations and message makes this a perfect holiday book for anyone who honors Christmas - either as a cultural or religious time.

Please carry either the hardback (preferable) or paperback for those of us who collect and share this wonderful man's work. This is one of his finest - I can't give a better compliment than that.

The Church Mice are involved in one of the their classic schemes to earn money - entering Sampson in cat shows. How could Sampson possibly win? By cheating of course! Unfortunately, Sampson gets kidnapped by a couple of criminals on a tandem bike (due to the local paper miss-reporting of the size of his winnings) and the mice have to go to his rescue for a change.

This book seems to wander in and out of print - it may be worth trying Amazon.co.uk as their listing of Graham Oakley books in print is generally more accurate.

It's unfortunate that this excellent survey of small boat (usually under 100 feet, and mostly around 30-50 feet) adventurers is out of print. If you enjoyed Josh Slocum's tale of his circumnavigation in the little sailboat Spray, this book will delight you. Since the book came out in the early 1970s, it has become almost commonplace to read about folks who girdle the earth in "trawler yachts" of 40-75 feet, with stablization, salt water evaporators, GPS, radar, and autopilots. The intrepid sailors described in this book had none of these comforts and aids to navigation. They are the pathfinders for the passagemakers of the 21st century.

This book -- a republication of the 19th-Century volume -- has detailed color drawings of textiles in the author's personal collection, grouped by era/century, technique, and design type -- and sometimes by country, as well. Dupont-Auberville's descriptions give you an idea of the more-detailed common design elements in each grouping, as well as some idea of when and where the designs appeared. This is one of a very few books to do so in general, and even fewer to do this for Medieval and Renaissance European textiles.
There are a few caveats, though:
The forward to the current republication does note that with the passage of time, some of Dupont-Auberville's assertions have been proven incorrect, and that some of his "late-17th-Century" fabrics really belong to the early 18th Century. In addition, he seems to confuse the numerical century with the years included in it (e.g., 17th Century with 1700's). Finally, except where otherwise indicated, the collection seems to favor French textiles -- but this (understandable) bias is not explicitly marked.
These few quibbles notwithstanding, it is a fascinating look into the evolution of textile patterns and techniques over the past five or six hundred years.

When Cassy the clumsy crocodile gets a job at Everglades Department Store, she certainly makes things happen - but not in the way she hopes. Toys, food, china.....she leaves a trail of destruction behind her in every department she visits. But in the end, Cassy's clumsiness saves the day and turns her into a hero.

This charming new series is designed for yhoung children who are just beginning to read alone and are looking for lively stories to tackle.

Jesse Mercer was an incredible Baptist pioneer
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-19
Jesse Mercer was active for God. His theology was strongly Calvinist, and he believed that his life should be spent in active service with the aim of bringing glory to God. This book tells some of his biography, and emphasizes his activity of collecting and publishing Christian hymns. I do not actually own this book, but have checked it out of the library from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. One could only wish that the current leadership of Mercer University (Atlanta, Georgia) which bears Mercer's family name would live with such theological conviction regarding Scriptural truth.
