I am also from Louisiana and have been to Baton Rouge many times, and I think it's wonderful that someone from Louisiana has written two books full of Boudreaux jokes and stories. Everyone should read these, because you just have to love the Cajun culture in them! Some of my favorites from the first (Dat Boudreaux Ain't Me, It's Ma Cousin) are when Boudreaux meets the devil ("Eet is STILL not as hot here as South Louisiana on a good July day!") and when Boudreaux decides to change his name (His name is Poo Poo Boudreaux and he wants the judge to change it to Poo Poo Fontenot!). I just got an autographed copy of this book from Hammond and can't wait to read it! I hope that Larry keeps making Boudreaux books!

Awesome see and hear Book

I loved this book. It richly describes the old 'General Store' days of my grandfather. Some may have been sitting in the sun playing checkers, but times were hard then, and most people worked from sun-up to sun-down.

This books lets you hear, feel, and smell those old places. It introduces you to some of the old pioneers of The NC area. You can almost feel their hard cracked hands, as if the author had you shake hands.

With this book you can actually drive and see some of the old stores still standing. But more fun, was visiting the ones that are STILL in business.

If walls can tell stories, then they surely bend MS Woodys ear! A very enjoyable read!

I've used this book many times for multiple different processes and it's never let me down. Anecdotal and fun to read, the authors also give good practical advice from experience.

A fascinating, scholarly, generous and surprising book.

Ms. Thomas' book is architecturally precise, but more than that, it is a generous and fascinating story of the Kress variety chain. What is surprising is that Kress had its own architectural division--and a spirit of community involvement. This is what "Main Street" once meant. Wonderful pictures--highly recommended, and Thomas is to be commended for her research and her excellent book.

Anatole and the Toyshop

Anatole was a good mouse and the father of a loving family. One day, when he arrived home from work, he discovered that his wife and children were missing. He receives word from his friend, Pierre the Pigeon, that his family had been captured by M'sieu Barat, the mean owner of of a toyshop in Paris. Barat forces the mice to ride around on their little bikes in his front window to attract customers. He then sets his cat, Clotilde, to watch them so that they cannot escape. Anatole would do anything to get them back. Will he be able to save his family without having to sacrifice his own life?
This story recognizes the amazing love that people have for their families. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good story. I know you won't regret reading it.

All It's Quacked Up To Be (And More)
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-20
This is one of the sweetest, most clever kids' books I've read in a long time -- made especially great by the fact that it is as amusing to me as it is to my 3-year-olds. For them, there are the wonderful illustrations, and the cacophony of animals and their sounds. For me, there is the quirky beauty and rhythm of the language. "The ferret's just/Fuzz with feet./His nose is a raisin/That sqishes and squeezes./I'd take him home /But I think he'll causes sneezes. Ahchoo Ahchoo Ahchoo!) ..and the thing is, it's just damn funny. In talking about the need to save and value animals of all types, it has a Message, but doesn't hit you over the head...and it's also touching without being cloying. How often can you say that about a kid's book?

By the way, I think this book is fine for kids 3 and above. The younger ones may not entirely appreciate the book's subtleties, but they'll love it anyway -- particularly if you're good at replicating the animal sounds.

If you're looking for a new copy of this book ...

As of the writing of this review, this book is still available new from the Canadian and U.K. Amazon sites. Check out amazon.ca and amazon.co.uk. (though you'll pay a little more postage). The cover is slightly different - red around the center artwork - but it appears to be the very same book inside. The title doesn't include the word "Omnibus" either. Just look up "Animal Tales Nick Butterworth" (title + author) and you should find it. Also available at these sites is the hard-to-find Nick Butterworth book "Stories Jesus Told". It's a compilation of several of his bible story books. Great finds.
