Discovered Atlas of Rare City Maps at Micawber books in Princeton, NJ. The college student/clerk said it was her favorite book in the store. I read it. Loved it. Gave it to the City Administrator in our town. He's so delighted by it that, after skimming it, he decided to read it one city at a time; like a morning devotional reading!

This book contains some of the loveliest reproductions of old maps I have ever scene. Aside from the beautiful pictures, the author includes interesting and valuable commentary to help the reader understand these city plans in the context of history and geography. All those interested in urban design should read the eloquent forward of this book. It would be highly beneficial if more of our political leaders, and just people in general, understood this era in urban design- the end of the traditional and the beginning of the modern. With the help of this book, perhaps we can bring about a new commitment to intelligent and beautiful urban planning for the future.

Certain essays from this book were requirements for an international relations class I took. After reading two of the stories I had to read the entire book. It is a truely excellent window into the effects of the atomic bomb on humans. It took me below the mushroom cloud, it was graphic, gripping, and effective. It does not focus on justifications for the bomb, it focuses purely on the effects. I plan on buying it in the near future because it is such an excellent testimonial.

I stumbled over this little book quite on accident and was straightway charmed by the cover picture. A delightful, creative story about a family of mice who find a very small chestnut that features in their adventures. Great for reading aloud to the family.
After the first chapter, a fascinating story

I read this book years ago, and feel obligated to tell others how wonderful it is. "The Attic Mice" is the story about a family of mice who live in the attic (hence the name) of a family that doesn't even know they exist. The book tells about their adventures, such as going down to the kitchen to go "grocery shopping" or outsmarting the family cat, Max. Pochocki writes the stories with wondorous simplicity, and Catrow's drawings are well-done and detailed. Overall, this little book will capture the imagination of all people, of any age.

This is the foreword to Automation Pays! by Corley Phillips
President, Telephone Response Technologies, Roseville, CA:
Computers are becoming an integral part of our everyday lives. This is especially true in
businesses, where computers have gone from being a luxury to a necessity.
Companies, such as Wal-Mart, have shown retailers how sophisticated inventory management
through automation can give a company the competitive edge it needs to become a leader.
It was this distinct advantage of automation that led my company to choose its mission statement:
"Helping Growing Businesses Operate More Effectively."; Automated businesses truly are more
effective.
Those who do not automate find themselves at a particular competitive disadvantage. Their
automated competitors always seem to have the popular items in stock, while those with manual
systems have "dust collectors" soaking up carrying costs and profits. Competitors conduct
rifle-shot marketing campaigns based upon current customer data, while those without customer
information are still scattering their marketing dollars in shotgun fashion. Their competitors respond
instantly to new trends based on up-to-date information, while the ones with manual systems find
themselves guessing - often wrong.
So, where do you turn for information on automation? In an industry as young as the PC software
industry, it's unusual to find a guy like Chuck Atkinson who can provide a decade and a half of
automation experience. His deep-seated conviction that automation is not only a necessity but a
very profitable investment comes from years of experience in developing products for retailers and
seeing the resulting benefits.
This book will clearly demonstrate the advantages of automation in very practical terms.

The main character is Eleanor, who has worked her way from cleaning chimneys and other jobs throughout the Barrington household to scrubbing pots in the kitchen. She loves to read, and goes to town every Wednesday to borrow a book from the local book store. On her way in to town one day she a book that had been left behind in the mud. Knowing that the owner could be long gone, she was advised to keep it as her own. She read the book thoroughly over and over and knew it to be true, to be scripture and vowed that she would some day afford the passage to America where the book had been printed.
Mrs. Barrington died while giving birth to her third child.Mr. Barrington now needed to find a Governess for his two children, to teach them and provide them with compassion and comfort after their mother's death. He asked Mrs. Bixby to bring all eligible women who worked in the household and were literate to come for an interview. She went reluctantly, though knowing that the new position would bring greater wages and indeed a better means to be able to save for passage to America.
Mr. Barrington eventually asked her to marry him, with no promise of love. Telling her that they would all be going to America, it would be a great adventure and he would be a great husband, very loyal and fulfill everything, give her anything. America turns out to be a grand adventure,
I love how at times it gets in to Mr. Barrington's head and he tells us what he is thinking at different points in the book, even though Eleanor is the main character and we are in her head most of the time.
Well worth reading... I can't wait to get to the next book, after I have had some more sleep of course.

This book is an excellent instructional book for a novice/starting plumber like me, an IT/electronics person. With the excellent fundamentals, the nice and colorful drawings and the detailed step-by-step instructions, I was able to replace a p-trap, a tail piece and a strainer of a kitchen sink on my own. I attribute this first-ever accomplishment of mine to this book. The book is so simple, so informative, even a 12-year-old can do the job after a few minutes of reading. Highly recommended for aspiring plumbers. How's that for cost-saving from expensive plumbers and boosting your self-actualization and learning a new skill ?

From back cover:
"True tales about the glories of flying!
For nearly 20 years the experiences of a pilot forever taken by aviation's romance and wonder have been told in the popular FLYING magazine column, 'BAX Seat.' Faithful readers have laughed at and looked forward to Gordon Baxter's candid reflections on the unique genre of general aviation. Now you can enjoy the best of these prized tales in 'BAX Seat: Log of a Pasture Pilot'
This volume is composed of articles written for 'Flying' from 1970-1978. The stories are hilarious, hair-raising, and always artistic. Gordon Baxter uses words to paint landscapes and to give elements texture and personality.
You will be captivated by the depth of feeling and regard for flying that Baxter relates in each story. Baxter's stories assess pilots, passengers, and planes with frank affection, and in all he describes, the pure delight of flying is felt."
From FRONT COVER:
"We were boys in the twilight of barnstorming. Maybe twice a year Jimmy and I would hear what we had been listening for - the sound of an airplane engine. 'Airplane! Airplane!' Running, shouting, grabbing up the kit and bicycling down the empty country road to the long pasture...If the pilot was hunting a pasture, we knew he would make a pass at our field, and we knew it was best. The hungry pilot would see several that might do, but on one of them, a low windsock would suddenly appear, and two small figures marking the ends, waving white flags...."

How do I describe the inital collection of the best of Baxter? I first obtained mine direct from Bax himself and I have a nice note in his own hand. Regardless, if you like Bax Seat over the years, this is one to get, keep, and re-read occaisionally. His stories about the 'houn Dog' and his Mooney stories, learning to fly IFR, stearmans, night fright, and all the other classics will keep you warm and aloft in the coldest of 0/0 weather. We'll miss you Bax.

This is a study of the book of Hebrews. The chapters are taken in order and explained in an expository manner. Dr. Wiersbe reminds us that God is "working in us to accomplish His purposes." He elaborates by emphasizing that the One Who is working is "the God of providence who guided this universe to its divinely ordained destiny."
Key words are traced back to the original language in this study. For example, in Hebrews 2:10-13 where Jesus is described as being the Captain of salvation, we're told another word for Captain could be pioneer, as in one who opens the way for others to follow.
Jesus Christ is the theme of the book of Hebrews. This book explains the various parts of the book, such as Jesus being superior to angels, Moses, and Aaron. Consequently, Christians have a better covenant than the old one.
This is a well-researched book that is easy to read. It covers the book of Hebrews thoroughly. I strongly recommend it.

"Bernelly was a country mouse. She lived west of the city in a small village that had everthing a mouse could need-except a shoe shop. From spring through fall Bernelly was a fly-fishing instructor... And in winter she spent her time tying beautiful flies." But a leaky boot sends her to the city for new shoes and a visit with cousin Harriet. "Harriet was a famous artist, and her home was also her studio. In winter she painted glorious masterpieces... And in summer she traveled to exotic places that might inspire her." Harriet was thrilled to have Bernelly visit, and took her all over the city, sightseeing and shopping, and by the end of the week, Bernelly was exhausted. "It is just too crowded and noisy here. I miss being able to sit quietly by the river watching my beautiful trout." Harriet was intrigued with such a simple, quiet life. "Perhaps it will inspire me." But of course, country life was not the life for her. Harriet was bored with fishing and gardening, napping and "dinner parties with exciting tales of trout." She missed the "hustle and bustle of city life-the noise, the smells, the shopping!" and heads back to the city, where surprisingly, she finds country life did inspire her, in its own way.....Elizabeth Dahlie's modern retelling of an old, favorite fable is playful and entertaining. Her engaging text is only outdone by her charming and endearing illustrations, rendered in soft, pastel tones, and filled with marvelous eye-catching detail and humor. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Bernelly & Harriet is a warm and captivating read aloud with a gentle message that won't be lost on little ones...there's no place like home.

This is a delightful new version of the Country Mouse and the City Mouse.
Bernelly's an independent country mouse who loves her life. Her jaunty attire of red scarf and black boots suit her life style as a fly-fishing instructor. She spends her leisure time tying flies and reading. Her library has an eclectic group of books that include, THE KENYON REVIEW, HENRIETTA, and THE VILLAGE, which indicate that she's a well read young mouse. Of course, her favorite books are about fly-fishing. When Bernelly realizes that she needs new boots, she decides to visit her cousin Harriet for a shopping trip to the city. Harriet's a stylish city mouse who wears gold loop earrings, and has a distinctive flair for clothes. Her sophisticated life as a famous artist allows for exotic travel and shopping. She's delighted to have Bernelly visit and takes her all over town seeing the sights. Bernelly's a bit overwhelmed and home sick, and invites Harriet to visit the country. When the city cousin visits the country, she's not overwhelmed, she's a little bored with the fly-fishing, gardening and the slow pace of life. In spite of the fact that the two mice have different life styles, they seem to enjoy an affectionate relationship which adds a nice warmth to the story.
I enjoyed the detail that Elizabeth Dahlie put into her illustrations. My favorite images are of Bernelly and Harriet walking hand in hand down a cobblestone city street where a flower pot reflects a house number--a delicious tea, served on blue and white china at Putney's Tea Shop-- shopping at an expensive shoe store--and, a mixed group of Bernelly's friends sharing a conversation at dinner. Each page of this enchanting book is filled with wonderful pictures.
A well done book that children will love.
