One of the true originals. One of the great poets who seem to invent a language, a world of metaphor of her own. A delight in her difficulty and a deep pleasure in her sombre tunes.

"Exultation is the going of an inland soul to sea/ Past the headlands , past the houses / into deep Eternity. "

Hidden meaning and insight in every poem.............

I love poetry but had not read many if any of emily dickinson so I picked this up to read in my spare time. At first glance the book and poems seemed so simple and easy to read. I thought it would be a small little delight to read her short poems while waiting in the car, or at the bank, in line at the grocier, but as I embarked on a stolen moment with the poems of emily dickinson you discover her poems are hardly simple.

Every poem seems has more than one meaning. You can truely see how complicated this simple woman must have been even in her observations.

I have been delighted by her insight and each poem makes me wonder of the woman who wrote them. A lovely read.

A prism which captures the white light of reality

Just as a prism breaks up light into a band of colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet - and their infinite gradations, so do Emily Dickinson's poems become, as it were, a prism which captures the white light of reality, a reality which as it flows through the prism of her poem explodes into a multiplicity of meanings.

It is the rich suggestiveness of her poems, a suggestiveness which generates an incredible range of meanings, that prevents us from ever being able to say (to continue the metaphor) that a given poem is 'about red' or 'about blue,' because her poems, as US critic Robert Weisbuch has observed, are in fact about _everything_. This is what makes her so unique, and this is why she appeals to every kind of reader (or certainly to open-minded ones) and even to children.

Emily Dickinson's poetry is one of the wonders of the world.

This is a very concise, yet thorough look at our language. It starts with the history of languages, the percentage of the world population that speak the most common languages, a diagram of Indo-European languages and which one evolved from what. It defines terms like "semantics", "phonetics", "phonemics", "phonics", "morphemics", etc. It gives nine different alphabets, including sign language, smoke signals and morse code. It gives examples of Hebrew and Japanese. There are some very informative drawings of the mouth, and how sounds are made.

And that's just the first 15 pages.

If you want to know what the "CAT" in CAT scan stands for, or why we write "please R.S.V.P." on party invitations, you can find the answers here.

This book is very nicely laid out, easy to read and aesthetic, with nice pictures and lots of color. There is just tons of information in this book, but it's not weighty or difficult to understand. Unlike a typical textbook, one piece can be understood at a time - one doesn't need to start from the beginning and read all the way through it.

I knew this book would be useful for my kids, but when I read the page that completely - and simply - defined "past perfect tense", "present perfect tense" and "future perfect tense", I was sold. I immediately called my friend who is the head teacher at a K-12 school, and told her she needed to get this book! (Turns out she already has it, and uses it all the time with her students.)

I can't say enough good things about this book!

As a home schooler I continually search for quality books at an affordable price. This book was an excellent find. The amount of information included here is exceptional. One look at the table of contents, I was sold. It covers topics from the history of language and alphabets to creative writing and reading literature, and of course, all the basics are here too. Each section is color coded for quick and easy reference. "Everything You Need To Know About English" makes English easy and understandable. This little book is not just a great value for the home schooling household, but should be in every home with school aged children or where anyone may need a well prepared English reference book.

Thoughts from a Funeral Futurist

Exit Strategy by Michelle Cromer is a well-told journey of baby boomers seeking something different, something personal, something meaningful for their final send-off. She has a way of weaving these new offerings with the personal stories of their clients, all the while interjecting her own personal thoughts in a from-the-hip and sometimes flirty style.

For the general public, Exit Strategy offers an unobtrusive look at the many alternative or non-traditional funeral and memorial service offerings. Although this book is just a sampling of the new and different choices available, it should stir the creativity of individuals so that they can be remembered in their unique way.

For funeral directors and cemeterians, Michelle Cromer has given us an upfront and personal look at what the public is considering for their Exit Strategy. Let's be prepared and be able to offer some alternatives to those not wishing a traditional funeral service - it is our responsibility to give direction to those who seek advice from us. If you haven't quite figured out the trick to cheating death (feel free to contact me if you have) then Michelle Cromer's book "Exit Strategy" is for you. As we all have to go to that Great Unknown at some point, you might as well go with your sense of style, taste and integrity intact. Ms. Cromer's marvelously witty and insightful book will guide you through the steps of a funeral that will not only satisfy your wildest dreams, but leave an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to witness your "leave taking". Personally, I can't decide whether to have my ashes shot into space or my remains compressed into a diamond...................

I loved this book!

What an amazing way to look at something we all face in our lives. This book has given me a whole new perspective on death and the typical funeral.... It somehow makes death seem less of a loss when you can have a choice in how to celebrate a life. I would highly recommend this book to everyone! What a great idea to choose an alternate way to leave this life!

Any thing by William Miller regarding nautical subjects is excellent. This and it's companion volume "The Great Luxry liners" are essential reading for anyone interested in this important era. I only wish someone with his talents would do a series on freighters and tankers of the 20th century.

Can I say enough about William H. Miller's expertice and knowledge? This book, along with the other three in this set, are amazing. With well thought-out linear notes on each ship, and wonderful interior and exterior pictures, this book is, needless to say, the most used in my collection! I particularly enjoy this book because it depicts the era I am most interested in, the turn of the century. It also nicely depicts my favorite ship 'Mauretania', and it gives her the respect and dignity she deserves, along with all of the other ships in this book. I also recommend Picture History of the French Line, Picture History of the Cunard Line, The Great Luxury Liners 1927-1954, Great Cruise Ships and Ocean Liners 1954-1986, Modern Cruise Ships 1965-1990, and last but not least, Pictorial Encyclopedia of Ocean Liners 1860-1994. But don't take my word for it, judge for yourself. But being an Ocean Liner historian, memorabilia collector, and avid reader, I can truthfully can say that William H. Millar can be placed on the high shelf of Ocean Liner Historians, along with Frank O. Braynard, and Robert Ballard.

ENJOY!

This book is incredibly helpful from children ages 6 all the way up to adults. You can be in French 1 in high school or AP French in college. No matter which way you go, this book helps you review for all the common French words that no tourist should be without. What's that word for watermelon? How about bathroom? Oh, dang, I forgot how to say tooth! Well, just review the pages of this book and its cute little pictures, and you'll remember in no time. It's also great if you're trying to teach young children their 2nd language, which I recommend, because children learn easier. This book will be fun for them, and for you to brush up on your French!

Still fun after all these months.

My daughter, age 4, has been enjoying this book since we received it eight months ago. Each page introduces a new theme: the kitchen, travel, the park, etc. Large, colorful drawings show how objects are used and relate to one another. Each theme has a variety of smaller pictures and stickers to teach individual words. My daugher often chose to work with the sticker book at reading time, and even though she has completed all the pages, still finds the book fascinating. I can only hope for a "Second Thousand Words in French" as a follow-up.

Not laugh out loud, elbow in the ribs funny, but very amusing. Hollywood could have a hit making this into a movie. The overarching question of the book, "Is the First Lady pregnant?" is, as Hitchcock would put it, a McGuffin.

Read this book and any reference to x-rated topiary, 3/4rds stockings, and left-handed dentists will have you grinning.

A Small Comedic Masterpiece

This novel is a comedic delight. "Floater" is the writing job at a fictional news magazine held by the book's central character Fred Becker. (It's also a job Trillin once held in his pre-New Yorker days.) A "floater" does not have a permanent assignment, but moves from one section of the magazine to another as illness or other reason creates a temporary need. The story takes place over one week in the life of the magazine, and finds Becker wrestling with an intriguing news tip, that, if true, could lead to a significant change in his life.

Trillin's gift for illuminating the absurdities of life really shine here. The plot, while entertaining, takes a back seat to the stable of realistic characters that just about anyone who has spent time in an office will recognize--the glad-handler, the martyr, the hypochondriac, the guy you want to avoid going to lunch with, the champion of political correctness, and others.

It's a puzzle to me that this hilarious book has been allowed to go out of print. Though I've been a fan of Trillin for some time, I have to given thanks to Sara Nelson and her recent book, "So Many Books, So Little Time," for calling my attention to this forgotten gem.--William C. Hall

Just-about-perfect novel

This book from 1980 is startlingly fresh. If we adjust the dollar amounts for book contracts to today's values, and concede that one character might have started the SUV craze, it is absolutely contemporary.

The book's insistence on Manhattan Island as the center of the universe would be annoying to non-New Yorkers. This is unfortunate, since the characters are mostly from outside Manhattan (as is the author) and their interaction doesn't depend at all on their location.

If the reader is able to deal with the Manhattan smugness, he will be amply rewarded with a plot and a cast of characters as perfectly drawn as any by Eric Ambler, in addition to a sly sense of humor which builds imperceptibly to a perfectly hilarious conclusion.

Trillin almost could have dispensed altogether with his lovely plot, as his characters could carry most novels all by themselves.

In addition to being a just-about-perfect exposition of the writer's craft, this book is also laugh-out-loud funny, literally.

Aside from the wealth of information, the photography and layout of the book is very elegant and artistic while being useful and informative.

Can you name the ten most famous people in western European history? After reading this book, you will. A monumental study of the human craving for attention, and the ways that people (mostly men) have sought it. I recommend this book for anyone who has wondered what all the fuss is about regarding celebrities today. This book was originally published in 1987, and Braudy has written an afterward for the 1997 edition -- it's very interesting to read what happens when you write "the book" on fame in the era of O.J.Simpson, Monika Lewinsky, et al.

In charting the course of fame, Braudy written a compelling and original history of Western culture. This is an amazing piece of work, clearly the product of insight, devotion, and many years of study. I've recently been seeing references to it in various mainstream publications, so I'm glad it's finally getting some of the attention it deserves, and it's nice to see that it went to paperback. It's ambitious, and I believe successful as well. It's fun to read, and it'll help refresh all that western history you forgot from school. If you don't completely love this book, you're a moron. (OK, that last statement's probably a bit much...) Anyway, note that I have no connection to the author, publisher, author's department (USC Literature), their families, or anything like that, other than having read this book.

It tells the history, several ways to cook, how to serve, and how to best appreciate usual and unusual varieties of well known and not so well known vegetables. In this continuing story of Thrush Green we follow the day to day life of the old friends we have met before in Miss Read's books. After the retirement of Agnes Fogerty and Dorothy Watson the new headmaster Alan Lester and his family move into the school house. But in small villages it's hard to keep secrets and it is soon apparent that Mrs. Lester has a drinking problem. Nellie Piggot is now a partner at the Fushia Bush and must face the responsibility of dealing with the strange ways of Bertha Lovelock as she approches her 80th birthday. Percy Hodge is the subject of much speculation about his love life. This book is a wonderful escape of the stress of modern life as we enjoy old friends Charles and Dimity Henstock, Harold and Isabel Shoosmith, Dotty Harmer and many others in Thrush Green.
