Incredibly easy to use! Plainly explains concepts I was never taught in High School. I appreciated its emphasis on different types of speech and writing, from the most familiar to the most formal.

I bought this book for an English class last winter. Now, I'm a music major and I have tons of music books, but I must say that this is the most useful book I have ever bought. Everything is explained in a concise and direct manner, and is easy to find. Whenever I'm in doubt of how to use a punctuation mark, or how to phrase something correctly I always come to this book. Whenever I have to write a paper, this book is right next to me. I love that its relatively small, too. Great book. Highly recomended.

complete book about longleaf pines

mr. earley goes deep into everything you could want to know about this native tree species,a cornerstone to both the natural world of the southeastern united states and the economic growth and development of the country as a whole.......he tells all about the past history, present day status, and projected outlook of the longleaf pine tree:it's one-time dominance of the coastal plain landscape, compared to it's present day status;all about the naval stores and timber industries, and their heavy dependence upon it that led to it's near demise and current numbers;and the changes in land management of the longleaf forest and it's various ecosystems, with much insight to the controlled burning philosophy that has gained in popularity during the last 50 years or so.....with photos, including some impressive shots of long-gone virgin growth trees dwarfing the grown men standing among them.

Superb book on several fronts...

Earley was trying to write a history of turpentining. What he ended up with was a spectacular essay on the natural history of longleaf pine forests, the human history of the forested south, an essay on conflicting views in forestry, and....oh yes...turpentine!

Reading this as an ecologist, I found everything I wanted with just enough of the human element to flesh it out without boring me. Oddly enough, I suspect those reading this from an anthropological view have the same opinion about the natural history aspect of the book. Earley is that good in weaving his tale.

It flows well, is well organized, and the research and references are stunning. Twenty-three pages of references make me wonder how he ever finished the book. (In his acknowledgements he seems to wonder the same thing himself!)

This book belongs on the shelf of every forester, ecologist, and southern historian. I'm just thankful I stumbled across it on a rainy day in Congaree National Park.

America's Rain Forest

Review Date: 2004-11-22

For years I have been concerned about the disappearance of the South American Rain Forest. What was shocking from Earley's book is how we had our own expansive Forest with it's own ecosystem and let it disappear before our very eyes without anyone noticing.

It is not only a wonderfully told story of the Longleaf pine but it is a genuine history of how the South's economic development between the time of the settlers and up until today nearly destroyed it's most valuable resource and the ecology that was a part of it.

The only problem with this book was not being able to put it down after I started reading it.

Best book on longleaf yet.

This is a very nice introductionary book that justly exhaust various topics. Pros: Easy to read, and unoffensive to the readers' intelligence. Many examples, diagrams, summaries, and concatenations between the chapters are well done. Great examples. This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I just finished my Communications class and used this book to give a presentation and write a paper on communication and how to do it right. I felt the book was very educational. It certainly taught me quite a bit, despite the fact that I couldn't really read it (I used it for research). It was on loan from my teacher, but I plan to buy this book for myself. Heck, I'll probably have my husband read it too!

When I started using this book in 1978, I could never have dreamed the impact it would have on my students. Now, as director of my own private school in another country it has become even more powerful as a tool to help teach English as well as communication skills in the native language. Through the excersises and discussions, students learn to communicate bi-lingually more effectively...much more effectively. In its 9th edition, it has become a standard, a classic and, for me and my students, a necessity.

This is the most user-friendly text for an introductory interpersonal communication class I've come across in my 10 year teaching career. The writing is as engaging as textbooks get, and the lay-out, graphics, and marginalia are first rate. Ron Adler and Neal Towne update this text frequently and it is full of references to current research if you wanted to explore any of the topics in more detail. Many of my students have told me that they would be keeping their copies rather than selling them back to the campus bookstore. One middle-aged woman had convinced her college-aged son to read it to help him better understand why he was having difficulties with personal and professional relationships. If you want a suppemental text to whatever you've been assigned, or if you just want an accessible introduction to the field of interpersonal communication, this is your book!

I first read this book about 3 years ago. I was 36 at the time. It had been given to me by a friend 3 years prior. As I dusted the worn cover I read ... and read...and read. I finished it in one sitting. Not so easily done being a single Mom with 4 children. I found I really never was alone. None of us ever are. This book ultimatly changed not only my life but all of those I have come in conact with since. I have purchesed several copies for those I love. I strongly believe this should be top on every reading list in every High School and Middle School. For Love really IS the Answer!

I first read this book about 7 years ago and at the time it had a transforming effect on my life. Based on the principles of "A Course in Miracles", yet light hearted and easy to read. While the message may seem too simple for those who believe that life is supposed to be difficult, if you apply the principles to your own life without judging them, you will see for yourself that sometimes it's the simple things in life that really make a difference. If you are interested in creating more meaningful relationships then this book will give you the skills you need to do so. Read it with an open mind and you just might find that Love Is the Answer!

A Book For the Ages

It has been more than a decade since I first stumbled upon this book. I cannot overstate how it has CHANGED MY LIFE ! I gained all kinds of new insights, and was able to see articulated things that I had innately believed, but had never seen validated. For example, there is the theory here that the only true emotions are love and fear. Hard to accept at first, perhaps, but then think about it: anger is a mask, hiding fear of some sort. This book is easy to digest, you WANT to pick it up and read it again and again and keep it handy. It's the kind of book you'll find yourself recommending to friends enthusiastically. The term "New Age" may have fallen out of fashion, but there's nothing mystical about this. It's practical, hands on, and talks about the concepts that everyone must live: forgiveness, trust, love. If you are curious about "The Course of Miracles," here's a good place to start. Or if you just want to know yourself and improve your relationships, you'll find a warm and friendly voice here to guide you.

For any problem, love is the solution.

The book focuses on attitudinal healing. The book has 4 parts. The first part introduces the notion of attitudinal healing. The second part deals with the issues of relationships. Part three develpes different stepping stones in the journey of attitudinal healing. This part deals with the ego and its role in fear based orientation to life. The basis idea is to recognize the role of split mind and heal it. One should transform fear into love. Final steping stone is the significance of forgiveness. The inner teacher is to be recognized and listened for guidance. Last part gives 15 lessons for daily meditations. For example, Lesson 10 " Today I forgive my parents totally, releasing us all from past ". Lesson 15 : I will be still for an instant. (Reminds Bible). Good book; ideal for gifts.

Yes, the story is much more than what the summary depicts. I have a soft spot for doctor/patient relationship and am glad to add this latest release from Drama Queen to my Yaoi collection.

Initially Naoyuki seems bratty and spoilt but one third through the story this 18 year old young man has my full sympathy. His older doctor lover Ryouichi, like the previous reviewer comments, is hard to understand but his devotion to Naoyuki is touching, genuine and heartfelt even though it does border on obsession. On the other hand I understand the good doctor's overwelming possessiveness. He and Naoyuki have been lovers for 5 years (this means back when Naoyuki was 13 but we are Yaoi fan so this is not an issue) and Naoyuki is pitiful. He is an orphan as his parents have perished in the same accident which also left him on clutches.

The mangaka did a great job expressing the relationship between doctor and patient. As the story progresses, one just appreciate their deep love for one another and the fact that they do need one another.

Vol 1 ended with the possibility that Naoyuki may recover full usage of his legs and of course this leaves Ryouichi worried about their relationship in the event Naoyuki no longer needs him.

Drama Queen has given us another great Yaoi with deep emotional content. As they do adhere to their release date, I could not help but wish Drama Queen has licensed Kizuna and Embracing Love instead of Bebeautifulmanga who loves to keep on delaying week after week, month after month...

Strange premise, but don't let that deter you!

I was originally leery when I first read the description for this book, it sounded as if it combined a spoiled boy with a besieged doctor. I was wrong. (Note to self: trust anything put out by `Drama Queen'!)

The sick high-schooler, Naoyuki, is not able to walk without aid and his ability to lead a normal life is curtailed. He has no family left and his feelings about his worth to society - to other people - is both heartwarming in its honesty and yet achingly sad.

In the beginning of this manga, he did *seem* spoiled to me by our valiant Doctor Sumi, but their relationship and Naoyuki's expectations and feelings are much more complex than that. As the description above states, Naoyuki wants to push the boundaries, rely more on himself and be less of a burden on his lover, Doctor Sumi.

I find the handsome Doctor to be the one who is harder to understand as he is in a position of power over the boy and his feelings towards Naoyuki's dependency are surprising. However, even though I was troubled by this, the Doctor truly will do anything for Naoyuki, and his honesty about his feelings for the boy is heartwarming.

The end of the book left me happy: both hopeful for the couple and looking forward to the next volume of this 3-part series!

Note: This is a Yaoi book, and there are scenes of that nature. I found them to be beautifully done, and very artistic in their rendering, much like the rest of the book.

This has more methods of drying (including sun-drying), it has information on pretreating foods.

How to Dry Foods on the other hand has metric to american conversion, and it tells how long specific foods last while dry.

If you want methods buy this book, if you want specific facts, buy How to Dry Foods. Personally, I'm buying this one.

Useful Primer for the Uninitiated
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-17
This documentary is a reasonable exposition of Chomsky's views. For those unfamiliar with Chomsky's (and Edward Herman's) propaganda model, this film is highly recommended. Those already conversant with Chomsky will probably revel in the extension of his ideas to real Living Color (those who agree with him anyway). However, I have one complaint: the propaganda system is complicated, and the film seems to take a dive on the specifics instead of dealing with its essential details. The failure to explicate what exactly Chomsky means when he speaks of "thought control in a democratic society" allows the pejorative claim that his ideas are "conspiratorial" to seep into the argument. Tom Wolfe scoffingly impugns what he calls, "the cabal"- I doubt he's actually read Chomsky. Anyone who understands the propaganda model, even if they fervently deny its existence, realizes that it is not worthy of "conspiracy theory" derision. The film would have done well to debunk this myth.

The other flaw as I see is the focus on Chomsky's background and personal life, which are superfluous to the film's main message and inconsistent with Chomsky's own feelings about celebrity.

As you can imagine, the film is rather one-sided in favor of Chomsky's views. Once you've seen this, it's absolutely imperative to read "Necessary Illusions", "Manufacturing Consent", and even some of Chomsky's other books- "The Washington Connection" and "Rouge States" are recommended. Also of note is that Chomsky may be Godfather of media criticism, but others including Nancy Snow and Michael Parenti have written well on the subject.

A vast wealth of insight

This book is much more than a simple transcript of the documentary of the same name, it also offers a lot of information and excerpts from interviews with and writings by Noam Chomsky not included in the film. It is a very wonderfully put together book. This might be the best introduction to Chomsky's thought around. and the philosopher all star trading cards in the back of the book are a great idea. Plus, it really looks good on the coffee table.

An extremely useful book

Review Date: 2002-01-19
"While the film has met with large-scale success throughout much of the world, it is as a book that Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media is most useful. A virtual transcript of the film, it also includes a range of other materials--extended extracts from Chomsky's writings, reviews of those writings, interviews and a variety of novelty items, from comic strips through to a set of "Philosopher all-Star" trading cards attached to the spine. Through these, the emphasis on Chomsky's personality with marks the film (and about which Chomsky himself was concerned) is diminished, and the result is a highly skimmable guide to Chomsky's political ideas, the controversies in which he has been embroiled, and the notoriously thorny question of the relationship between his political and linguistic ideas. It is, perhaps, too fragmentary and montage-like in its organization to serve as a course text, but as a distillation of one important current within Western radical thought it is extremely useful."

Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media is the essential companion book to the celebrated philosophical documentary film of the same name which was released in 1993.

Noam Chomsky followers and all free thinkers who have seen the film (and those who have not) owe it to themselves to get a copy of this provocative book and discover the incredible depth and lucidity of Chomsky's thought and ideas which address the most important moral, ethical, political and social issues of our time.

The book contains a complete transcript of the film, with 300 stills illustrating the text, as well as copious excerpts from Chomsky's writings, interviews and other sources. The side-bar rich format of the book is well designed in that it allows one to follow the sometimes fast pace of the documentary's narrative while providing well chosen excerpts from Chomsky's writings that enrich and elucidate the topics presented in the film.

Like the film, this book will hold your attention, and you will find yourself returning again and again to explore the political life and times of the controversial author, linguist, and radical philosopher Noam Chomsky. I would highly recommend this book both to the seasoned reader of Chomsky's work and as a very approachable introduction for the first time reader to this authors intellectually potent thought.

For those new to the subject, this is a thorough orientation to the true purpose and value of meditation. It provides scientific, historical and cultural background to many metaphysical processes; in addition, the author shares enough of his personal experiences to provide credibility but always focuses on practical application of his words to the reader. The written content is complemented by beautiful photographs that demonstrate the author's message from another perspective. The CD that comes with the book is a bonus - and a very good starting point for regular meditation.

I have read a number of publications on meditation and related subjects and feel this one provides the most "value".

I have read many meditation books over the last 30 years, since I first became interested in the subject. None has been so inspirational as Stephen Austen's book which introduces additional aspects of the subject which other authors tend to leave out. The writing style is straightforward but highly informative and leads the reader thoughtfully through all the subject areas. The fact that a CD is included helps to remove and diminish the mystery of this subject to many and provides one with an immediate and useful tool plus a link with the author. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to both the newcomer to the subject and to the experienced meditator.

This is one of the most inspiring meditation books that I have read. It is so clearly presented, that not only is it a "must" for those who haven't practiced meditation before, but a renewed source of inspiration for those who are already familiar with the benefits which meditation can bring. The step by step guidance allows the reader to progress at his or her own pace, which is particularly helpful. As well as describing the various meditation techniques, the author also explains in detail the positive effects they have on the health of the body. The lovely illustrations and helpful CD make this book excellent value for money.
