outstanding introduction to the science of exerciseReview Date: 2008-05-23
Very good reference materialReview Date: 2001-06-19
It covers every area of sport performance in well-documented and example-driven text, colour diagrams and graphical representations. It is a generic reference book, which does not focus on specific sports activities, but uses examples from a wide range of sports to demonstrate the body's response to exercise, training and the passage of time.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a detailed overview of the physiological responses to training, or needs specific answers to questions. An excellent index and layout also makes this a good reference book for looking up quick answers to problems. Absolutely worth the cost. Only criticism... there is a slightly schizophrenic approach to units of measure, reflecting the US imperial measurements, Keep a calculator handy to convert to SI units (eg Kgs, Kms, etc)

Good and interesting Review Date: 2007-06-08
It is a technical book with good illustrations and pictures. I would grade it as an intermediate level material. You can read this as a beginner but it would be a slow read as you'd have to get a understanding of all the concepts...It is like reading an upgraded version of college biology - first time it's a lot of studying, the second time you'll review and pic up on new little details...
Review not from an exercise physiologist.Review Date: 2007-01-30
I consider reading this book better than buying thousands of sport/fitness magazines because the last one are not, in general, scientifically founded and full of wrong (market driven an potentially dangerous for your health) information. Of course, if you are not a exercise physiologist or do not have an undergraduate degree in correlated area you can have some difficult to cope with the book, but a basic knowledge in chemistry and biology can help to overcome most of them and learn the foundations.
Additionally, the book offers hundreds of references which can be helpful for further reading.

Excellent book by excellent authorsReview Date: 2001-10-06
I can imagine that some people might read those things and think that it sounds too sad to read for pleasure. Please don't assume that. There is so much beauty to the people and the stories that it is enjoyable reading.
Life can be good to live even when one goes through awful things. The same is true in the books that we read. Even though we may ache for the people in the stories, we love them. We live along with them.
This book, along with the other books in the series, is excellent, because it gets you to live right along side those in the books. You don't just learn about their lives. You participate in them in a very real sense.

Less is more: strength of the book is its brevityReview Date: 2008-05-24
This strength of this book is its brevity and its informal, narrative yet business like to-the-point style. It makes very easing reading and at the same time you will obtain many important insights in how to live your life. I think Jim Rohn is a down to the earth type of man who at the same time does not accept mediocrity and has succeeded once more to convey essential lessons for life in a very accessible way. No need to spend more time on a review of this book. Recommended !

WONDERFUL! Clear and concise!!Review Date: 2002-01-26
It makes a very easy read, even fine things are explained in very simple way, with excellent pix as examples. Best thing is that experts talk abt all the things like lens basics, depth of feild, metering, filters, B&W pix, fashion photography and even abt business side of photography.
After going thru various topices of this book quality of my pix has improved many-folds. If you go thru a topic and try it on the field, results would be IMMED!!
I have a digital camera and before reading this book I always relied on the camera and operated it in all auto mode! Not anymore, now I'm deciding everything abt the picture. Feels great.
Great compilation, worth its price. A MUST.
Cheers
Great Balance!Review Date: 2001-02-03
It covers the basics thoroughly, but goes beyond the basics. Did you know one brand of slide film gets better saturation in red-yellow while another gets better saturation in green-blue?
The pictures are fascinating, and the aurthor explains the specific applications of basic principles that went into them!
An inspiring workReview Date: 2001-03-30
The drawbacks? The book has a couple. If you're not into B&W photography or slide film several of the books sections and photographs will leave you cold. The other main "distraction" is also a benefit; it's written by multiple authors with multiple (and sometimes conflicting) points of view. Be prepared to read a "do this" suggestion on one page and then five pages later read a "don't do this" suggestion for the same thing!
All in all, a worthy addition to your bookshelf.

"It is a Family Heirloom. It Will Come to Me Again."Review Date: 2004-01-17
"The Stones of Green Knowe" completes Boston's series, and aptly takes us right back to the beginning of Green Knowe: to its original construction in 1120 A.D. The very first of the Green Knowe children is Roger, the grandson of a Norman Earl, who is excited beyond words at the building of a two-storied stone house, complete with windows. Roger's days are spent watching the flocks and exploring the construction site, with as much attention given to historical accuracy and detail as one would expect from Rosemary Sutcliffe. Like all the previous young protagonists, he is surrounded both by semi-mysterious characters sympathetic to his situation (such as the Viking Olaf Olafson, who gifts him with a magical knife, and another kindly grandmother reminiscent of the not-yet-born Grandmother Oldknow), and characters that make his life a little bit more difficult - such as a snobbish mother, not the first one to appear in Boston's books, leading me to believe that the author knew one personally.
Yet despite being surrounded by all this excitement, Roger becomes captivated by the talk of the workers, who mention among themselves two mysterious stones out on the hills: "Surely you've heard of them? Very old, they were. Two of them standing out alone on a grassy hill at twilight, it gave you the jumps to see them." Roger, along with his horse Viking and his dog Watchet, seek them out, and by clearing away some brush, discovers the King and Queen Stones: the source of the magic of Green Knowe.
From there the real adventures begin, as Roger discovers what later generations have yet to do: time travel back and forth to discover the other children of Green Knowe, and the fate of his beloved home. In true Lucy Boston style, there is added in little notes of Roger's discomfort at the environmental destruction of the forest, but it never overshadows what we are really interested in: his meetings with Toby, Alexander and Linnet, with Susan and Jacob, and with Tolly, all living in the same house at different times. Marvelling at the differences they all face, the reader is eventually rewarded with a beautiful scene of all the children gathered together under the beech tree...joined by yet another unexpected child, who gives Roger a special keepsake.
After six books in the series, I was very sad to see its end, as with all great literature, I had grown quite attacted to Green Knowe and its inhabitants. It was a touch of genius to have the final book take place at 'the beginning' as it were, as we finally can understand where St Christopher came from, how Green Knowe got its name, and how the time travelling was made possible in the first place: through the Stones, whose origins remain an eternal mystery. If there was one fault, it was that Ping, Ida and Oskar were completely absent - in the final book, surely it would have been the right time to bring ALL the children together, but it seems Boston wanted to keep only the children of Roger's bloodline in for simplicity's sake.
"The Stones of Green Knowe" is the perfect ending to a stunning series of somewhat unknown books, leaving us with the major theme of the books: the ongoing battle to protect that which is natural and beautiful. I found it extremely fitting that the book ended with one last enigma concerning the fate of the Stones, and what appears to be the end of the time-travelling, for the last sentence of this last book took my breath away in its sadness and potency.
This wonderful book needs to be re-issued!Review Date: 2004-02-17
Sixth and last of the Green Knowe seriesReview Date: 2001-01-17
Stones is indeed about Roger, son of the Norman lord who built Green Knowe, and the building of Green Knowe. Like all of the series, mysterious and imaginative and full of historical detail.
Like the best books of this type, the series creates a world of which the books merely touch the surface.
Highly recommended.

Buy a copy and keep it a secret - you will appear to have mastered the major strategic issues in grocery, this book is that good.
The issues are examined in a balanced way and the conclusions are well drawn. Be warned, it takes time to read as every three or four pages gave me so many ideas that I would put it down and write a paper inside my business from the ideas and options the book had generated.
Well worth the cost, but keep this between just us.

Teaches Us About TRUE equine BehaviorReview Date: 2006-06-21

The ultimate guide to horse behaviourReview Date: 2003-09-01
There are several books out there claiming to tell you about horse social structures and body language but this is the classic (I've had my copy for at least 15 years now) and the best. Vavra writes and photographs with a naturalists eye for detail and information while allowing the photographers art and ability to display beauty to shine through in the finished plates.
The book follows the lives of several bands of horses on the Carmargue providing an enthralling insight into the lives of feral horses, which easily translates to our domestic companions.
The book is formatted so that various behaviours and traits such as aggression, play, vocalisation etc etc are put into chapters with photos and explainations showing the variations of each behaviour between adolescents, babies and adults or mares, bachelors and stallions for instance.
A brilliant coffee table book, an excellent guide for horsemen and women interested in equine behaviour and body language.

Robert, if I weren't married, I'd run away with you just so I could be there when you see what you see through your lens. For horse lovers, nature lovers or photography lovers, nobody captures the power and majesty of these creatures like Vavra.
Give this book to someone you love and wrap it in the finest paper and tie it with a velvet bow. It would be a treasure to receive this or any Vavra book.

TRICKSTERReview Date: 2004-03-17
I like the book because the book is interesting, funny, exciting and sometimes you can't even put the book down. It's one of my favorites in the whole world.
I think that the author (Laurie Halse Anderson) could have put a little more past times in the book, maybe a little more exclamatory events too.
The message to this book is to help others when they are in trouble. Also, be responsible and don't always play around.

This book is the opposite of all those endless magazine and internet exercise tips. The authors have themselves tested and compiled the best experimentally tested findings on the causes and mechanics of exercise and the human body. Why does muscle get stronger? Can you get faster? How? Why?
Book is long and can be a bit technical. It is a textbook on exercise. It is not the end of the topic. But if you want to look at and learn about sports from the perspective of tested results, written by maybe the best teachers and minds in the field: get this book. Maximum recommend.
