I bought this book for my mother who wanted to know more about how to use her new computer. She absolutely is thrilled at all she's learned from reading the book and says it is very easy to read. Now she knows enough to really become dangerous!

Great Book That Explains The New Features in The Pentium CPU
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-22
The most useful information that I found in this book is the clear explanation of the new features of Pentium processor that are not found in earlier 8086 to 80486 processors. Several chapters are dedicated to the Pentium Data and Instruction Cache Memory Architecture for both system with single and multiple processors. Note that this book is not for a beginner. If you don't know anything about Cache Memory architecture from earlier Intel CPU then this book is not for you. The earlier books in Mindshare PC System Architecture Series which are ISA System Architecture, EISA System Architecture and 80486 System Architecture should give sufficent background to read this book.

A computer instructor's guide!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-26
You want to study computer hardware. You need to know how Windows 2000 Professional works and most importantly you need to learn how Office applications work with both Windows 2000 and the hardware of the system. You need to buy 8 or 9 books, or do you?

Marc Herniter has taken the trouble to put together a 900 plus page book that covers each of the areas and will give you a better understanding how each integrates with the other. Herniter's book are not written to any exam certification specifically, however there is enough information to supplement your studies.

From hardware topics like memory, disk storage and video, to Windows 2000 topics like the file system, explorer, desktop, management and system utilities to Word, Excel and PowerPoint in Office 2000, Herniter gives you a very good book to work with.

Also Herniter includes networking and the internet through Windows 2000, which is certainly a great bonus. The omitting of Applications like Access, Front Page, Outlook and Project does mean you will need other books, hopefully in the 3rd edition these topics will be covered.

There is an abundance of screen shoots to help make the author's points in every topic. Also the additional questions at the end of each section are a great study bonus. The Cd-rom that comes with the book includes several tutorials from DOS to Windows 2000 to Office 2000. For those that teach this is certainly a book to take serious look at.

Best Nontechnical Approach to PC Basics
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-16
I have been teaching personal computer basics since 1983 (since 1981 if you include mainframe days!). I have written my own training manuals to cover this topic, but when I found the first edition of this book (this is the second), I started using it for all my classes. I'm very excited that the book was finally updated and look forward to seeing the 3rd edition (which I recently ordered). Most beginning computer books are actually very technical (for the person who wants to be an expert), with very little practical hands-on material for the layman who wants to just learn the basics. This is the best there is for the average want-to-be computer user.

Made a big difference in my business!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-23
This book describes how videoconferencing is changing the world. It's really interesting, because the author shows lots of real-world uses for the technology and what works and what doesn't. The book shows how all kinds of companies in lots of different fields are implementing this communication tool. The book is the only one around that traces the history of the technology back to the late 1920's when television was invented. Also, the book is an easy read. Rosen writes really conversationally and includes lots of experiences and quotes from videoconferencing users. A must-read for anybody interested in communicating more effectively!

Accessible and Effective
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-21
Regardless of your computer savvy, this book is accessible, with tips on how to bring your ideas to life in the most effective ways. For lawyers who want to make jurors sit up and take notice, this book is required reading. Whether the lawyer or support staff experiment with these Powerpoint presentation ideas, this book sets out the concepts that creative litigators can use to illustrate their legal theories so that jurors can understand. The authors illustrate persuasively that a picture is indeed worth a thousand words. This is an amazing combination of law and technology, and will become the standard for litigation in the coming decades.

This is a PC book that you can actually sit down and read cover to cover. The conversational style just carries you along and, in the end, you've learned things you didn't even know you didn't know. A portion of the book is devoted to the question that troubles every computer owner from time to time: What should I buy (or use) to make my computer do what I want? This book is invaluable because it tells not "what to buy" but how to make the decision. If you've always thought of your computer as "just a box", or if you've always thought it was your fault when the machine didn't work properly, this book will open your eyes.
