Meyers has created many useful hands-on exercises in this manual. The manual is a companion to his Network+ Guide, which is geared to the network administrator and intermediate-level student. If you want to practice networking essentials with Windows, including connecting to AppleTalk and other systems, this workbook is for you. The instructions are step by step, easy to follow. One caution -- you won't get far in a university lab or work environment where the administrator privileges are locked down. Great for practicing on a home network or lab you can re-image after the lesson is finished.

I thought I knew a lot about computers before reading this book. Turns out I really only knew a lot about Windows. However, this book has taught me a great deal about computers and I feel that, because of Mike Meyers, I am off on the path to the career I want. This book is very well written, using lively, active language to keep the book interesting. Unlike most textbooks, this one is written as if the author is speaking to you, and is very thorough and informative. The book goes in-depth into several areas of computer technology, devoting chapters to specific components such as processors, memory, input/output, etc...
I read this book one time all the way through, and passed the CompTIA A+ Certification exam because of it. I'd shake the authors hand if I had a chance to meet the guy. I definitely recommend this book to anybody who is interested in becoming CompTIA A+ Certified.

Superb as a reference ...

This is an official book that was published by MIPS and Joseph Heinrich was an employee of MIPS when he wrote the book. This one book teaches you everything necessary in order to program the MIPS series of processors. This is the definitive book on the 32-bit CPU instruction set, plus 64-bit extensions.

It's one of the best books on a microprocessor I've ever read. It includes everything - memory management, cpu exceptions, cache organization, etc., plus a full description of the instruction set, suitable as a reference for assembly-language programmers. I used this book while teaching a class on computer architecture at the University of Illinois.

You can get a free PDF copy fo this manual from the MIPS web site, however, I'd prefer to get the hardback or the paperback (it's grey - but out of print,). I don't even program the MIPS CPU any more but i lost my paperback and i want another since the MIPS chip is a very significant chip in the history of computer architecture.

Now I understand how "modelling" covers many spheres...

The writer of this book, Dr. Axel Jantsch, is a professor at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. As a postgraduate student at the Technical University of Denmark, I have participated Dr. Jantsch's course whose curriculum was dictated by this book.

Dr. Jantsch is a splendid lecturer and his a pioneer in his comprehensive, yet highly-readable, cover of modelling technieques for embedded systems. The book covers in depth notions such as final state machines, petri nets, as well as the untimed, timed and synchronous computation models. Dr. Jantsch does not, unlike other sources, sticks only to the formalism related to the modelling, but also includes "real life" examples that make the reader apprieciate what model of computation is the more optimal for his modelling aims.

This book is an excellent source of information regarding stochastic halftoning. No book comes close to reviewing such a broad array of halftoning algorithms and statistical models. It is clearly within the top three of all technical books on halftoning.

No single text has dominated the market for introductory material in computer logic design since the classic work by Feller, now quite out of date. Bredeson's work is one of the best up-to-date offerings. It has a very good selection of homework problems, and an intuitively satisfying explanation of key concepts such as K-maps and sequential design. The figures are also a strong point. There are some small errors and misprints, but they are easy to find. I've taught the course at least nine times from several books, and liked this book perhaps most of all.

Aged information, but good reading for the time.

Charles Platt describes how to write, and includes complete BASIC source code for 15 computer applications. The subject matter for these applications range from games to utilities to a very cool simulation called "Rat-Race" that lets you make AI-like decisions about your life (you will suffer the consequences of some actions). For 1985, when the PC market was still emerging, he put together an incredibly useful little book for new programmers and wannabe programmers (like I was). I got my first taste of real programming from this book.

He actually covered the BASIC language for Commodore, several Apple PCs, Columbia, Adam, Franklin, IBM and clones, Kaypro, Osborne, TRS-80, Zenith, and more. It's a very complete list.

I highly recommend this book for people who want to look at what programming was like in the 80s, or those who want to get neat ideas for new student projects.

I recently installed windows 98 second edition on several PCs at home and work and have been looking for a useful reference manual. This book is full of easier, quicker ways to use windows 98se, including many simple ideas that are easy to implement. Virtually every page offered something helpful. Amazingly, there was very little obvious stuff that most books spend most of the pages regurgitating.
