It is a well done translation with both the english and latin making for easy reading. The subject is as appropriate today as when Cicero wrote it to his son.

A masterpiece of ethics and logos

De Officiis, or "On Duties," was the second book printed on Gutenberg's printing press. Apparently, Gutenberg and his other contemporaries knew how important the press was so they wanted to give props to the Bible, as the most important book ever written/compiled-but along those lines he decided to print Cicero's classic shortly thereafter. Cicero wrote this book as a series of letters to his prodigal child, who had little ambition to be a correct man, like his father was. Consequently, it reads like good advice from your father.

Some of the greatest logos on ethics comes from this book. He will convince you that being an ethical person is the only way to live, and he does it through expediency-"whether the action contemplated is or is not conducive to comfort and happiness in life, to the command of means and wealth, to influence, and to power." The gist of it is that having good moral character will bring you more expediency in the long run than any illicit behavior. Maintaining power, increasing wealth and influence will naturally be easiest to those men and women with high moral character.

Most books on ethics and morality are not widely credible. The reason is that those great books are religious texts, claimed by those sects to be inspired by God, which is why they are incredible to many who are not members of that particular faith. But Cicero's De Officiis is recognized by all-because it is a secular book. So if you want to quote a high authority on morality, quote Cicero. Here is a preview of the good quotes: "For self control is the foe of the passions, and the passions are the handmaids of pleasure."

Good for THINKING about medical ethics

Lots of philosophy articles on medicine. I'm a philosophy professor who teaches medical ethics and I'm distressed that most books and discussions leave out the PHILOSOPHICAL REASONING behind positions on both sides. To this book's credit, all the articles (each reproduced in full) emphasize how and why the author supports or rejects a position on: euthanasia, abortion, genetic testing, locking up the harmless insane, and national medical coverage. I used it in my class and will use it again.

Great source articles

This is a premiere collection of the top philosophical essays behind medical ethics today. I, too, teach a philosophy course on medical ethics and use this anthology as supplementary reading material. Some of the articles are a little heady for undergrads who aren't (yet) philosophy majors, so I also recommend Gregory Pence's companion book, Classic Cases in Medical Ethics, which is considerably more approachable and even interesting to read.

As a college student, it could be quite daunting to take on certain philosophy texts. Some can be completely dry. Some could just drone on and on. But even to an individual with limited interest in ethics will find this book rather accesible. There are many moments in this book where the average student will say, "oh, I get it". So whether you are buying this book as a requirement or to fullfill you curiosity in ethics, this book is a great buy. Even though I purchased this book as a requirement, it will always have a nice little home on my bookshelf. Zeuschner rules all!

For college students that do not have much time to read, this book offers the basics on the major ethical positions from around the world -- not just from the west! There are nice biographical pieces and the position summaries are broken up nicely. For a short introductory ethics course this or the Clark and Poortenga seem to be targeting our contemporary students well.

A Must For All Professional Investigators...
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-07
As a licensed private investigator, college instructor of private investigations courses, and an avid reader of investigative texts, I must commend Ms. Kitty Hailey, CLI, CFE, for writing the only definitive book on ethics for the investigative professional.

Individuals seek out the expertise of the professional investigator when they are in need of help. The role of the investigator is to provide the necessary assistance in a manner that is factual, accountable, and complete. Nothing, however, stops the unethical practitioner who takes advantage of those for whom he or she works. "Code of Professional Conduct" has been prepared to advance the reputation of the private investigation profession, and to ensure that sufficient effort is afforded to each client.

A majority of the professional investigation associations already invoke a code of ethics and/or cannons of professional conduct. Although similar in many respects, they also vary greatly.

Ms. Hailey has compiled, compared, and contrasted the various doctrines of these codes. They have been categorized and restated with emphasis on clarity and simplicity of language.

The private investigation profession demands the most diligent, honest, and professional conduct of its practitioners. "Code of Professional Conduct" will help meet that goal.

This book should be in the hands of every practicing investigator, every person who hires an investigator, and the leaders of every investigative association.

Overall, the content is excellent and the author is one of the nation's foremost authorities on professionalism in the investigative professions. If you are truly interested in this topic, and all professional investigators should be, then this is the title you've been looking for.

I would also like to personally thank Ms. Hailey for taking the time to send me a signed copy of this book and her other book, "The Professional Investigator: A compilation of Articles, Essays and Forms".

As always, check with your local library or bookstore to see if you can read/review this or any title before deciding to make a purchase. This method has effectively allowed me to make the most of my investigative library budget.

This book...is, without a doubt, the most important book ever written for our profession. There should never again be a question in the legal profession about the commitment of professional investigators to ethical and responsible behavior. This is a book that every investigator should read, should gift to others, should provide to association leaders, and should be sure to have in his or her briefcase for ready reference to prove to clients, courts, and the media that this work, and responsibility, is taken VERY seriously.

Engaging look at Rawls' lifework
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-04
Rawls' doctoral dissertation, completed at Harvard in 1951, sketched a procedure for adjudicating certain political and moral conflicts. Twenty years later he parlayed this procedure into his famous elaboration of social contract theory, his conception of "justice as fairness." This idea marks the heart of Rawls' _A Theory of Justice_, the most important and influential work of political philosophy of the twentieth century. His central thesis, that a conception of justice as fairness would be accepted by all members of liberal constitutional democracies, motivated Rawls' justly-celebrated philosophical defense of democratic liberalism. In _Political Liberalism_ (1993), Rawls deepened his philosophical analysis by articulating an even broader principle, that of "public reason," which he believes is the shared basis for justifying (among other things) liberty of conscience, freedom of thought, and toleration of difference within liberal societies. Most recently, in _The Law of Peoples_ (1999), Rawls has stretched the social contract yet further by defending an even more general philosophical principle, that of the "just law of peoples." Just as the liberal principles of justice of fairness and public reason allowed him to develop complex theories about political relations within liberal democracies, Rawls believes that, because it would be acceptable to both constitutional liberals and members of certain illiberal societies, this new principle forms the basis of a social contract more inclusive than those of his earlier treatises. Rawls' vision of a realizable near-utopia emerges through his beautiful theoretical elaborations of a social contract theory that takes his principles--as well as the existence of a world burdened with outlaw states, crushing poverty, and problematical absolutism--utterly seriously.

Rawls' _Collected Papers_ brings together nearly all of his major and minor shorter publications on these and related issues. Many essays explore in greater depth issues raised by critics of _A Theory of Justice_ and _Political Liberalism_, and all of them together paint a fascinating portrait of Rawls' philosophical development between 1951 and the present.

Effective Workbook for Collective Bargaining Simulation
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-25
Collective bargaining is something that has to be experienced to be understood, and a simulation is a great way to help students develop that perspective. This student workbook is excellent, and provides a sound basis for the simulation. I did not have access to the software for the instructor, so I cannot comment on that.

The simulation is broken down into 5 phases: Preparation; Pre-Bargaining Strategy Development; Opening Negotiation; Additional Negotiations; and Simulation Review.

The simulation is designed so that it can be done individually or with a team. I would strongly encourage you to use the team approach, because that will come closest to what the actual experience is like.

The case materials are quite complete. You have an actual collective bargaining agreement (slightly disguised) to work from. You also have lots of information about pay rates, profitability, costs of various things being bargained for. In the evaluation section, you have some good ways for team members to help you understand how you did and did not contribute to the process successfully.

There are a variety of roles to play. Ideally, you should do the simulation at least twice, and have a chance to work on both sides of the negotiation.

Some of the key issues you'll be asked to think about include wages, overtime levels, fully-paid health insurance, and a declining management-labor relationship.

This simulation has been used at many universities, and I hope that many more will adopt it, as well. Enjoy your role playing!

This is only computer-based simulation for use in collective bargaining, negotiations, and human resource management courses, or management training in this important subject. The book that is listed is the STUDENT MANUAL for the course. The instructor will have the software for the simulation. This is not a stand-alone product but must be administered by the insturctor in the course. This book would be the same book as purchased in the college bookstore.

Come Wewoka, July 6, 2008
By S. Miller "liandanson" (N.C.)

I was moved by this inspirational retelling of a historical disaster.
Once started I could not set down the poems of tragedy and conveyance of a People so oppressed and degraded. It made my heart sad to think My people (both white and native american) had brought this to pass.

Touching in its intensity the author has brought life to a past era and shared a side of the story seldom heard.

Thank you for sharing thoughts, stories and passion of an age gone by but hopefully not forgotten for its impact on humanity.

I highly recommend this book to all.
Sincerely,

One of the greatest tragedies of our American History, and of the history of our world is the abomination that led to the Trail of Tears of 1831. The devastation that occurred due to the forced relocation of entire nations from their homelands due to the greed of the American government still lingers today within the Five Civilized Tribes who were the victims of this action, and many of Edward Patterson's poetry in this dual collection deals with those after effects, and expresses the anguish, anger, and frustrations that continue to haunt his people almost 200 years later.

In addition to the poems of "Come, Wewoka,", Patterson shares much of his personal life through the prose poetry of "Diary of Medicine Flower". These poems, as personally insightful as the others, are more focused not on the impact of the Trail of Tears on his people as the life he's led and the trials and tribulations which he's faced and overcome.

This collection reflects what I believe to be poetry at its best, poetry which gives us a peek into the heart of the human soul from which we come away feeling a little more enlightened.

This is a poetry collection that every lover of great literature should find moving.
