The book fascinated me, changed the way I considered things, made me think enlightment was really at hand. Three years later, I have changed my mind about it. The discerment and rethoric Nisargadat are just impressive, perhaps underrated in todays philosophic and spiritual world.
However, I must say it's up to the reader to believe if this is the real path to enlightment. I won't say here what I believe. The book is a jewell of the advaita philosophy. I don't remember skipping pages or being bored in the 400 or more pages this book has.
Recommendable investment.

Are you awake? wondering why the old "ego entity" is still causing trouble? "I Am That" is probably the best medicine you can take during the "relative" process of unfolding. What a gem! Boy am I sorry I missed meeting this guy!

I have a library of hundreds of spiritual books, representing every major religious and mystical tradition.

Few possess the clarity, the startling immediacy, the actual life-altering power of this volume.

If there is such a thing as a holy book, here is one.

What more can be said?

I purchased my first copy of this book 25 years ago, have purchased or read hundreds since and never found any writing more essential to Self-realization than I Am That. Every mind blowing word comes from a simple man who had never received a formal education beyond primary learning. His photo alone will send you into the mystery.

Nisargadatta's teaching is simple and radical. Give every spare second of your free time to being conscious to the only fact you know...I Am. What is that? Look, intuit, be still and realize. Stay with what you truly know and be this awareness always. I am not aware of any spiritual teacher who has offered more truth than this book contains in its 110 dialogues with students. Yet, as Nisargadatta says himself, "A quiet mind is all you need..." Our freedom is realized within and as our own Self. Nisargadatta points where we must BE. Anyone who takes up his advice as their own contemplation can realize the Absolute Self. This book is never the same in any reading and it nourishes the true in you. It flows like water that's headed home to the ocean. Jump in and let the current have you. I Am That is a timeless classic. Don't just read it, live it and be happy.

i almost threw this book in the trash once or twice on the first read, it seemed backwards, ludicrous, and difficult to read.
i kept picking it back up and giving it another chance due to all the good reviews, and something inside me that kept urging me to.
Once i started to understand Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj the book became easier to read, it was like, "OHHH, i get it now!"
Now, even though it is difficult to subscribe to, or follow "all" of the Maharaj's teachings, i am finding that some of the principals of non-duality are making my life appear "better" and bringing me closer to others, in understanding them better, i find more tolerance of our subtle differences; thus, common ground to grow on.

There are many wonderful quotes in this book...
here is one of my favorite:

"Causes and results are infinite in number and variety. Everything affects everything. In this universe, when one thing changes, everything changes. Hence the great power of man in changing the world by changing himself." (I Am That, Nisargadatta Maharaj, p 490)

i truly believe that "Everyone" should at least give the Maharaj a chance, and read this book.

Listed as a 'summer read' in a local magazine list - I hadn't heard of this book. I picked it up and finished it from one afternoon into the next morning. And -- there was nothing surprising or new to be found here in the book - the pace at which its written and the uncomplicated natural way Lindbergh examines her life and her impressions of life's stages will have me passing this book on to many people in my life.

A Few Shells

Review Date: 2008-06-23
What timeless wisdom there is in this little book. Although it was written many decades ago, the challenges and issues faced by Anne Morrow Lindbergh are the same ones faced by women in today's crazy, bustling world. In fact, although women in Siberia, Cameroon, or Ceylon might not have her specific set of circumstances, they can still identify with Lindbergh's ponderings about a woman's life, her obligations, her relationships, and her needs. She lived in an upscale suburb of Connecticut and was the mother of five children, and yet there's something in her writing that can touch the souls of women everywhere whether in a grass hut or trailer beside a busy highway

The chapters in Gift from the Sea center on Lindbergh's musings during a two-week vacation at the shore. Leaving husband, children, and house behind, she lives in a bare beach cabin without heat, telephone, plumbing, hot water, rugs, or curtains. She finds simplicity beautiful and longs to take it home to Connecticut when her vacation ends.

Lindbergh takes a shell at a time and describes it in relation to other things in a woman's life. For instance, the moon shell reminds her that quiet time, solitude, contemplation, and "something of one's own" is needed. The double-sunrise represents the pure relationship found in early stages of friendship and marriage, and she reminds the reader that there is no permanent return to an old form of relationship since all are in the process of change. The oyster bed symbolizes the middle years of marriage and family, especially as the home itself grows and expands to accommodate the growing family.

I first read this book when I was a young mother and could readily understand Lindbergh's comment that saints were so rarely married woman because of the distractions inherent in raising children and running a house. "Human relationships with their myriad pulls--woman's normal occupations in general run counter to creative life, or contemplative life, or saintly life." Now in midlife, I can better understand her affinity for all the shells as reminders that each cycle of the wave, the tide, and the relationship is valid.

This book came very highly recommended by two friends who are avid book readers. However I hate to admit that the book did not move me as much as my friends claimed that it moved them. I was more interested about the background references to the author's personal life and how the book came into being. That I would have read voraciously. The book is short but I don't intend to read it again to see what I missed. I believe a book either moves you or it doesn't. This particular book despite other rave reviews did not move me despite my great affinity for the sea and women writers. I wonder if perhaps if the book would have touched me differently if I read it in the beach rather than on a plane which I did.

I have never been a big fan of books on CD. This changed with Gift from the Sea with the forward by Reeve Lindbergh and beautifully read by Claudette Colbert. This is a beautifully written and recorded book. I keep it in my car and play it quite often. I have orderered additional copies to share with friends. It is indeed as relevant today as it was fifty years ago and probably even more pertinent in today's fast paced world where we fail to slow down give ourselves alone time to comtemplate our lives. Reeve Lindbergh's forward about her mother was a lovely bonus. Although I have not read any of her children's books, I have read everything else she has written that I can find and encourage anyone who has not read her books to check her out on [...].

The Food Revolution has a message for anyone who never thinks twice about the consequences of their food choices. It will even enlighten those who feel confident that they make the right food choices because they listen to their doctors. And its message is strong even to those who think vegetarians are prudes and are missing out on "the finer things." Robbins lays out the facts, using research articles as evidence, to criticize the food industry's claims and present the contradicting findings resulting from good sound science. Using this method he exposes the stark realities of the American diet that for the most part will get you to wonder why you have lived your life without ever wondering about such things as where your food comes from, how it was made, and what impact it has on the environment. Robbins explains to you the enormous impact that the single act of eating has on your body, the human population, and the planet itself. This book is huge in its scope and contains facts from hundreds of sources, and its rather objective delivery makes it a necessary read for anyone interested in studying diet, nutrition, disease, environmental protection, science, and agriculture. His sources are sometimes repetitive, be it the same person or organization, and as a result at these times his arguments lack clout. But these sources are solid and true, therefore not taking very much away from Robbins' message to America about the hazards of the current American diet.

While it was vegan ultra-runner Scott Jurek who convinced me to change my diet, about 6 months later a friend recommended this book to me, and for the most part it's this man and this book that have convinced me plant-based nutrition is the future.

In answering a question for me that I submitted on his website, John Robbins led me to Vegsource and the rest of the gang. While it took a little time for a response to my question, when I did receive it, it came directly from John Robbins. I was quite surprised by this, and felt that I shouldn't "needlessly" bother him again, even with a thank you.

Hill's book truly gives you words to live by. Realism, faith and hope in the future are the key themes of this book. As a reader, you are looking into the world of a young person trying and seeking to find his path. Gladly, Hill picks up the baton that was thrown to him by his mentors of the past and follows through by showing this youth a new way of thinking and living. His advice is so pure and genuine that it crosses the boundaries of gender and race--this is something that all folks need to hear! This book is the ultimate self help guide for those who have lost their way, need to find their way or need an affirmation that they are well on their way. Harper's words are definitely needed and should be cherished.

Preach on Brother Harper! Preach on!

I have a 12 yr old son that has been going through some rough times at school with wanting to do well, but being teased for it. Junior High is/was/will always be a tough time. My son and I read this book together and then discussed anything we felt needed discussing. He started to feel "normal" knowing that a lot of people were experiencing the same things as him, even celebrities like Will Smith, someone he looks up to. I HIGHLY suggest this book to boys of any race. Thank you Hill Harper!!!!

I picked this book up because it was chosen as THE Best Book for Young People by the American Library Association for 2007. That is quite an endorsement. I had never heard of the author or seen his TV show.

"Letters to a Young Brother: MANifest Your Destiny" was outstanding! I wish I could put a copy in every single young person's hands. While the title implies that the book is especially relevant title for young black males, anyone would find this book inspirational.

I loved hearing about Hill's grandfathers and family life. The way he described what could be learned in a single-parent household was so lovingly described and unusual to hear. I also respected how vulnerable the author made himself by sharing his mistakes. The stories create incredibly powerful and interesting lessons.

This is a great gift to give to any young man between ages 14-20.

In Driven, Dr. Frigo and Mr. Litman provide the background to "Return Driven Strategy", which is a strategic framework that underlies the importance of integrating a business strategy, the execution of that strategy, and ultimately how those pieces relate to a company's valuation. Through their detailed research of high performing companies, Frigo and Litman provide example after example of how strategic decisions, including how one defines wealth, can impact the ultimate success of an organization.

The framework is applicable to any number of audiences, whether it be senior managers of large organizations, consultants, small business owners, or even for individuals as the framework can be easily applied to career development.

Strategy and execution are so important to success in business, yet receive such inadequate study and analysis in business schools, the corporate world, etc. Most strategic thinking consists of buzz words and double talk by high level executives. Driven won't let them get away with it! It takes you into financial analysis of strategy and execution and actually ties data to strategy framework and execution without getting bogged down in analysis paralysis. An excellent read which provides an essential framework for success.

The author shares some inspirational stories of the lessons her grandfather, a Rabbi taught her as a child that served as building blocks for the rest of her life, as a Dr. and then a counselor. Whether you read this from cover to cover, because it is delightful and insightful, or take it story at a time over a period of time, it is a wonderful book. I happened upon this book by chance, and it is quite possibly the best book I've ever read. If you are looking for a book to inspire you and give you a positive outlook on life, this is it. It is incredibly refreshing and easy to read. Rather than one long story, it is a bunch of short stories, which makes it great for reading a little bit at a time. It has really helped me remember what is important in life. After reading this book, I can't wait to read other books by this author.

What a wonderful thing it would be if we all had a grandfather like Rachel Naomi Remen had. Since we don't, the next best thing might be to learn the lessons and experience the blessings by having her share her stories about him with us. She does so in a beautiful, almost under stated way that is never intrusive and leaves us with a feeling of deep appreciation. These are very human and moving parable like stories that enrich our connection to each other in almost imperceptible ways. Although this is definitely not a how to book, the stories may effect how we live our lives. Thank you to Dr. Remen.

This book helped me shed my attachment to Zen and Buddhist philosophy. While I still think Zen and Buddhist philosophy have great significance and truth, I realize that I was creating walls by living with these ideas instead of just exploring them and setting them aside. I still "practice" Buddhism but I don't feel as attached to it...we must transcend practice in order to experience truth. The practice must be new...and the word "practice" means doing the same thing over and over....this book helped me realize that we can do things over and over...and on the surface them may seem the same...but if you really know how to practice then they are totally new each time.

"Freedom from the Known" by Krishnamurti is a book about humanity's search for Truth and ultimate freedom... Krishnamurti takes you on a journey beyond material welfare.

In 'Freedom from the Known' Krishnamurti deals with such timeless questions as 'what is it all about?" and 'has life any meaning?' Krishnamurti acknowledges the confusion, brutalities, divisions, and endless frustrations of life, and finally asks the question 'what is one to do?' The rest of the book delves into answering this question both from a universal and personal perspective.

Thought provoking and deep.

Great when read together with NEXUS, a psychological & spiritual New Age novel where the main character struggles with confusion, frustration & challenges in his life.

COMPASSIONATE SAMURAI is by far the best book written by the extraordinary Brian Klemmer to date. Partnered with Randy Pausch's THE LAST LECTURE, COMPASSIONATE SAMURAI out-SECRETs THE SECRET by helping to better put things into very clear, concrete, practical, everyday terms as regards how to live one's Life--helping to truly create a world that works for everyone with no one left out.
Is this book filled with common sense? Well, yes, but given that common sense is a commodity shockingly lacking in today's world, it takes a book like COMPASSIONATE SAMURAI to whack one upside the head to realize it.
Will one fully understand what it means to be a compassionate samurai just by reading the book? No, but it's a damn good start. This book will help one to understand that one can live a vastly more fulfilling Life by being a little less selfish and being of more service to others.
Would that every politician, university professor, coach and student in America read this book. It would be a solid step in the right direction. Read COMPASSIONATE SAMURAI, and then pay it forward.

As a reader of many self-help books, this book is concise, very readable and gives presents a way of 'being' which I haven't seen before. Reading this book really made me examine my way of thinking and is helping me create some good things in my life. The people writing reviews of this book must be the brainwashed True Believers of Klemmer's LGAT seminars. I read this book because my True Believer boss lent it to me. He's being the good salesman for the cause, as he bankrupts himself shelling out thousands of dollars to reprise his past role as the anxious child who doesn't quite measure up to abusive Dad's expectations. Sorry to counter the glowing praise uniformly lavished, but this book is a recitation of common-sense advice available in any fourth-grade boy scout book about how to be a good, dependable citizen. He dresses this schlock up in the warrior garb of a fantasy creature called a "Compassionate Samurai", an influential and powerful Carnegie-esque good guy. What a laugh! Klemmer invokes his highly romanticized image of a warrior in militarized feudal Japan, then sticks the absurd adjective "compassionate" on the front of it and ends up with something that's only meaningful to people with no critical thinking capabilities. This absurd image is a wonderful metaphor for the utter manipulative, brainwashing insanity of the LGAT money-extraction game.

Anything Karen Kingsbury writes is incredible. I recently gave this book to a mom whose son was graduating from high school. She loved it so much that she keeps it on her coffee table for everyone to read. I also gave it to a mom whose son just turned 5. She, too loved the message of treasuring your child's every moment--their firsts and their lasts. This book is more for moms rather than the children.

I got this book for myself last year before the birth of my second child. The story has more meaning to a second time mom. This time I got two copies for friends who are expecting their second babies.

If you're looking for a sentimental read, then this book is for you! I gave this book to a couple of my close friends for Mother's Day and everyone loved it and even admitted to crying while reading it. It's defintely a tearjerker. After reading it you will want to go and find your children and give them a hug and hold them close. I highly recommend it.

Someone read this book at a MOPs meeting and I cried and cried... its a wonderful reminder of all that's really important -- loving and raising your kids, and just how fast this too shall pass! I bought 3 as gifts to other moms and still cry every time I read it.

Shellie Warren has revealed a painful area for women ,one that there is no help within the church body.Women who have missused sex and their body to fill a void. I can relate, after many years of trying to figure out why I was repeating the same pattern, Shellie gave a knowledgeable title to my confusion.I devoured the book with highlighter in hand repeating passages of scripture or lines from her poems that will serve as a stepping stone to finally loving "ME" first. Shellie thank you so much for giving me wings.

Amidst all of the calamity, lust, sex, & promiscuity that is in the world, this is a book that can bring about change. Thank you Shellie for keepin' it real. It took strength that truly had to come from God to tell your story.

Having had some of the same experiences of the author Shellie Warren, all I could say is WOW and that I must MOVE in sharing this word. Her book has prompted me to start planning on speaking with young adults and late teens at my place of worship and at the local H.S.'s to get the word out. We must equip our young people with information to make better choices in life. That's the very reason that God allowed her to write this book!

I am firm, when I say "This Book Will Bring About Change !!!"

Through it all.

Kudos to Shellie R. Warren on writing such a powerful message filled book. The author of this book could be anyone of us because in some form or fashion we all have been a victim of poor decision making that led to unhealthy relationships etc.
"Inside of Me" is just another example of not being able to have a testimony without the test. It's a must read for all ages and genders.

This is an awesome book for all to read. The experiences that Shellie shares are as real as it gets. It should be shared with young men and women to let them know that they will have choices to make and their decisions will have an impact on thier lives as well as others around them. I am proud of Shellie for being brave enough to share with us her experiences so that hopefully we can avoid some of the things that she endured. To all thinking about purchasing the book----Just Do It--It is priceless!! God Bless you Shellie and continue to share your awesome gift !!

Its not by accident that after about 35 reviews, nearly all have given this book 5 stars. What is there to say that hasn't already been said? I have seen alot of comments that say "this is a must read for women"... just to clarify, this is a book "for everyone- men and women." I am a 24 year old guy and read this book in 2 days. God has certainly blessed Shellie with tremendous writing ability. You will not be dissapointed with this book...
