While the Java portion assumes the reader is using the Sun JDK and the HTML is version 3, this book offers 6 of the most popular web related programming topics in one, easy to read manual. The greatest aspect of this book is that it is a reference manual, and as such all entries are alphabetical within their respective area. Having been a bookseller, I can honestly say that this is the best web reference manual I have seen.

Hands down this is one of the best textbooks I've read in a while. Written by a DeVry University professor, Steve Silva, he cuts out the fluff and goes to straight to the meat and potatoes of the subject! If you want to master web server administration, this is book to read!

Ultimate Web Services reference book: Broad coverage, concise and comprehensiv

Review Date: 2007-11-12
As Web services are becoming one of the most popular technologies for a wide range of demanding IT applications, there is a growing need to get a thorough understanding of the foundations, principles, methodologies, technologies and protocols that under-pin them. This need, which is felt both by practitioners and the Computer Science students, is addressed superbly by the "Web services: principles and technology" book of Mike Papazoglou, one of the pioneers and world experts in the field.

Rarely will you find a book on Web Services that covers such an incredible broad range of inter-related topics with such authority and depth. The book is well organized, well written, broad, concise and comprehensive. It is an excellent coverage of the whole world of Web Services spanning principles, methodologies, engineering and technologies, which it all expertly laces together and explains with amazing clarity and sufficient details to allow a true and deep understanding of the subject.

The book covers such topics as:

* Distributed Computing Infrastructures, EAI systems and business-to-Business integration techniques
* Service Description and Publication
* Reliable Messaging and Event Notification
* Service-Oriented Architectures & the Enterprise Service Bus
* Web Services and Workflows
* Web Services Transactions
* Web Services Security
* Web Services Policies and Agreements
* Semantics and Web Services
* Business Protocols
* Web Services Development Life-cycle with emphasis on techniques for service analysis (including "as-is" and "to-be" analysis), design and service implementation options
* Web Services Management
* Grid and Mobile Services

This book is the definitive guide on Web services - excellent coverage on fundamentals, principles, operating guidelines combined with non-trivial case studies and examples which illustrate the design and engineering of Web services in a real-world setting. It provides a very precise, thorough and comprehensive treatment of Web services. Unlike other books, it goes beyond mere Web service standards, programming and implementation by placing emphasis on understanding of the concepts, principles, mechanisms and methodologies underpinning Web services.

I'm using this book in a Master's course at the University of Groningen and had a great response from the students, while I found my work as an instructor greatly facilitated by the clarity of the presentation and the available material (power point notes) for instructors. This said, I consider the book absolutely adequate also for self-study and for the novice who wants to explore the landscape of Web services.

To summarize, this book is an excellent and authoritative journey into the world of Web Services. It is an incredible read! Highly recommended!!

Broad, easily readable, and comprehensive - highly recommended tour

This book stands out from the vast array of contemporary SOA and Web services literature in many ways:

1) It presents business context and technical requirements for Web services design on an adequate level of detail.
2) It provides important historical insight without putting the reader to sleep.
3) It covers relevant related work such as e-business, EAI, and networking as needed, unlike most other Web services books.
4) It separates abstract concepts such as messaging from implementation technology such as JMS appropriately, but shows the connections when needed.
5) It builds up a non-trivial example that demonstrates how the various specifications fit together, many unique illustrations help to digest.
6) It has non-trivial exercises that will deepen your understanding.
7) The author's has a hype-free, vendor-neutral writing style and is very experienced in his field.

It always is a good sign if as a reader I want more... so I would also have been interested in the author's view on the ongoing WS-*/SOAP vs. REST debate, and about adoption of the presented concepts and technologies in the industry (tools and project usage); for example, UDDI does not seem to have much traction these days. Maybe something for the Website accompanying the book, which will also have additional material for students and lecturers?

As a practicing IT architect, I have helped many companies to transform their existing applications into Web services-based SOAs. As a book author, I have captured my own experience with the technology in writing. As a researcher, I now investigate many of the architecture design issues the author points out. Still, I find this book to be very educational and informative; I highly recommend it for practitioners, students, and researchers that want to understand the big picture as well as technical rationale and details behind the various concepts and technologies. Those of you that believe some WSDL-to-Java wizards or RESTful POX/HTTP calls are all that is required for successful enterprise development and integration, please do have a look as well - you will begin to appreciate that there is more to the picture!

Marc has a winner here. I stumbled across it in my local bookstore, and after flipping through a few pages, knew I had to buy it. The clarity of the message, the practicality of the presentation, and the true wisdom contained within make it a must read for anyone in the Internet or e-commerce field. Furthermore, any savvy business person can learn what they need to do to make better use of the Internet as a marketing, sales, customer service, and operational tool. It's NOT a book for the person who wants to read thousands of words delving into the deepest intricacies of business models, Internet user behavior, or complex financial models. It IS a book for the busy person who doesn't have time (or money) to figure out all of this stuff through trial and error, and who wants to capture the wisdom of others (Marc and the people he interviewed) in an efficient way. I wish I would have had it two years ago -- it would have saved me a lot of time figuring these things out myself.

One last note. I worked with some of the best thought-leaders while I was working with two Big-5 consulting firms, and I saw how the old Chinese proverb "To know, but not to do, is not yet to know" was truly accurate. They knew what they knew because of their experience. Because of his dead-on summary of these essentials, I didn't believe that a book of this quality could come from someone who was just a writer and has a few Internet businesses. I found through further research that Marc was formerly a partner at one of the leading web development and operation firms. I think he should include a few more lines in his too-brief bio to explain that. Even without that, the book speaks for itself.

Loved It!

The amount of great information contained in this book will take a lot of people by surprise. Those who have tried and failed in this business will get a lot of answers as to where they went wrong. For those looking to enter this business, the book will become their bible. The knowledge gained is actually saving me a great deal of time and MONEY.

Being new to the healthcare field, I have very little knowledge of medical terminology and procedures. This book is incredibly informative in a way that is understandable to even a beginner. It's well written, with clear, concise terminology and has plenty of color illustrations to help make sense of what would otherwise be overwhelming to a non-clinical person.

I am using this book right now in my Medical Terminology class and we are not using the whole book because I am not trying to be a Doctor or Nurse, but a Certified Medical Transcriptionist. Well, this book is impressive, to say the least. I am learning so much from the reading, the pictures, the 2 floppy disks and cassette tape that came with it. It is basically a textbook/workbook; there's a lot of review questions, etc. at the end of each chapter and also, on the floppies, there are sample tests and games to play to assist you in learning the material. Using the cassette tape has listening exercises on it so you can type along, as if the Doctor was dictating a letter and so you use it as dictation material and you can learn a lot of new medical terms that way, also. I don't think there could be a better book out there if you're wanting to learn Medical Terminology. I recommend it highly!

Editor Alfred J. Walker briefly introduces the new Web-based technologies that are enabling human resource (HR) managers to operate more effectively. He then offers a series of 17 articles by different authors covering these new approaches. The topics covered include Web-based employee self-service, delivering employee benefits over the Web, creating an HR service center, outsourcing and using the Web for a variety of services, including recruiting, staffing, compensation planning, employee development and knowledge management. This specialized book will primarily interest HR professionals, top executives and information technology professionals involved in setting up HR information systems. Since HR professionals are attuned to human failings, we [...] trust they will forgive the book's occasional information overlaps - hard to avoid with a collection of articles by different authors - and frequently return to this solid and specifically useful book.

Finally! Updated processes aligned to modern environments
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-07
Having read (and reviewed) the eleven previous books in the Enterprise Computing series my expectations for this book were high - and completely met.

Like the other books in the series the structure and content covers people, process and technology, with an emphasis on business and stakeholder requirements. Unlike the other books, which are steeped in traditional approaches to reliability, availability and support processes that were born in the mainframe environment, this one gives those proven processes a facelift and aligns them to the realities of web time and pressures. Not that the parent processes were flawed - they were not agile enough to support the rapidly changing technical and business requirements that are constantly emerging. However, the best part of this book is that it never loses sight of business imperatives, which is something that needs to be reinforced in the minds of IT operations and management staff.

The book starts with a detailed discussion of business drivers, then covers the four essential dimensions of the web infrastructure framework. This is a blend of business- and technical-oriented actions, which includes understanding all factors and drivers, planning and phased implementation, value chain analysis and agile processes. In fact, the one aspect of the earlier books that I lamented - forcing old (but proven and necessary) processes, such as change control into web-based and e-business environments was not working. While the processes are essential, they needed streamlining, which is something many of us who specialize in service support and delivery have been grappling with. This book provides streamlined approaches that meet the requirements of contemporary environments, while maintaining the integrity of the processes themselves. This alone is reason enough to read this book.

The book ends with a case study that illustrates the key points made in the main body of the book, and also provides excellent material in the four appendices (including change control templates).

Traditional Approaches Infused with Web Reality

Review Date: 2002-12-03
Perhaps the major failure of the Internet Boom was its attempt to fit business models to technology. Had analysts fit the technology to the business model, we may have had a different experience.

A major theme of this book is that unless one keeps a clear eye on the four principle - business, people, process and technology - business drivers, it is difficult, if not impossible, to steer a course towards success.

There is no escaping the fact the Internet merely enables a more well-planned approach to securing a strategic position in a competitive market. It is not a one stop solution. The book demonstrates exactly how to integrate all four elements to deliver maximum value.

The authors conclude their book with a case study that illustrates the principles they espouse. In their appendix, they include interest assessment and change-management templates along with an interesting chapter on project management.

This book aligns the traditional mainframe approaches of reliability, availability and support with the realities of the web. It is worth every penny of its purchase price.

Training Managers and HR/Manager types can learn much from this book as well. The CD that comes with is a huge help, all in all well worth the price.

As a career trainer/educator, I speak from experience to you managers out there...if you are thinking of cutting resources or entirely removing your education department...DON'T!!! Get some folks that are smart, passionate and have read this book!

The people in the e-learning industry could be divided largely into three camps - the Pedagogists, the Technologists and the Pedagogist-Technologists (people who bridge the two apparently divergent worlds). :-)

IMHO, Dr Margaret Driscoll is a Pedagogist-Technologist - a wonderfully excellent one! After ploughing through dozens of good and not-so-good books on e-learning, I find this book (which I borrowed from a campus library) a treasure trove. I strongly recommend this book to any serious e-learning practitioner (novice or experienced) who is looking for succinct and practical information, as well as pedagogically and technologically sound tips - this book is loaded with summaries, templates, worksheets, and more.

I can highly recommend this book if you are interested, how things really work on the Web. It explains all the basics that are still - after 6 years - fundamental to most static and dynamic Web sites. The examples are very useful in the daily business of a Web master. Only a few books on this topic present really helpful information in a compact and easy to read way - this book does!

Many thanks to Christian and Johan :-)

It presents all and only the information needed to start a web site. It gives reader a transparent view on how web works, no added complication or subtracted information. Has elegant examples in Perl, covering most of the basic needs in web development, from form handling to log file analysis, even have a working example of shopping cart. Gives a concise descriptions of HTTP and HTML. I read the book from cover to cover over a weekend, while have practically no prior knowledge on CGI or Perl, and get a jump start on both. It seems that every word in the book is useful and helpful. It's bit "old" now, but still gives one a solid understanding of how web works. An excellent technical book.
