I have read many books on Dynamic HTML, CSS, etc., and this is one of the best! While the examples are at times a bit silly or self-indulgent, they always illustrate the point at hand in a clear and intelligent fashion. The author clearly has an excellent understanding of all parts of the DHTML world and leads the beginner through progressively more difficult steps very well.

The one inevitable caveat is that this book is based solely on DHTML/CSS for Internet Explorer and the examples will not work in Netscape. However, this book will provide you with a good understanding of the fundamentals necessary for programming for either browser.

Challenging, Informtive, Useful and fun

All programming books should be as good as this one; and yes the Official IE4 SiteBuilder Toolkit is indeed a web programming book. Alan Simpson covers cascading style sheets, Dynamic HTML, ActiveX controls and VBScript as well as any other author in the technical book publishing industry. Well, there are deeper books on ActiveX but they don't include smart, small, easy to test examples, like this one does. Alan Simpson's examples make excellent starting points for ones own experiments.Larger discussions of object models and technical specifications can also be found here along with listings for electronic (and other) resources to aid in further research and study. The appendix on RGB and decimal color values is a wonderful extra. Yes it's a Microsoft centric book, but you can have a lot fun with this one.

Very easy to read, excellent examples, comprehensive.

I was actually able to sit and read the majority of this book on a flight without access to a computer at all. It really is very well written giving clear examples without over simplifying. You must remember that the techniques are for the most part specific to IE4 and therefore will not work with Netscape but I guess there are other books for that.

All aspects of DHTML are covered in a logical sequence and the only real prerequisite is some experience with web design and straight HTML. The CD is well stocked with examples and tools.

This is not a highly technical book to be digested by pure programmers, but it does provide a root to some powerful techniques for the slightly adventurous web author.

Without any doubt the most read of all of my computer books!

This book is a great resource for anyone wanting to learn how to design web sites. It's simple, easy to read, and (dare I say this about a computer software instruction book) fun. Once you learn the basics, the book is also a terrific reference guide, thanks to an amazingly useful index. I enthusiastically recommend it.

I was very pleased with the scope and detail of this book, and the author's style is humorous and non-technical. The book even comes with a *fully-licensed* copy of Netscape Communicator 4 and a hypertext chapter with links to all sorts of interesting sites! Even without the CD-ROM, this book would be a winner, but the software is the icing on the cake. I highly recommend it

This little gem of a book has poems that make immediate sense and engage the reader emotionally and intellectually. This is not modern poetry because it is easy to remember. The explanations by the poet of the meaning of the poems add depth to the readers happy experience. This is one of the few poetry books I have ever enjoyed reading and the only one I have ever recommended to my friends.

Dynamic reading! Patten's prolific poetry evokes powerful images as if he provides a window to peer into creation no longer allowing one to avoid its significance and forcing us to have a greater appreciation of life's complexities by showing us its simplicities.

Over the past few years I have been exposed to a great deal of output from the mind and talent of Dr. Bernie Patten. Dr. Patten is a man of many talents, first of all a noted neurologist (now retired from practice), an author of novels, an artist, and now, his first love, a poet. Currently Dr. Patten is exhibiting paintings at Houston Community College and Rice University, while at the same time teaching a very popular seminar on The Human Brain at Rice University. It is said that sex originates in the brain, and since Dr. Patten is a noted neurologist, particularly versed in knowledge of the human brain, it stands to reason that his novels, his art and his poetry all reflect the same theme, and probably his own preoccupation with it. Dare I mention the subject he seems to know so much about? Why, of course it is SEX. I, personally, have not been a great reader of poetry, but I have nothing against it, just as I have nothing against SEX. I, personally, like it. So I have found this collection of poetry sometimes pornographic (like the cover, and like a lot of Dr. Paten's paintings and novels), but also amusing and never dull. I can therefore recommend this poetry collection for those of you out there who think you do not like poetry. I know you will like this poetry.

If you want an interactive database-based web site without spending hours and hours wading through dozens of books to figure out how to do it, then you will want "Open Source Web Development with LAMP". The book starts with the very basics and proceeds step by step so you can get your web site up as quickly as possible and with a minimum of problems. So what exactly is LAMP? It stands for the four components of a LAMP server - Linux operating system, Apache web server, MySQL database server, and the Perl programming language.

The book is divided into four distinct parts and organized in an unexpected way. Instead of giving each part of LAMP its own section the four sections focus on structure (getting them all up and working together), static web pages (creating and using them), dynamic web pages (getting the pages to do something via Perl and MySQL), and embedded programs (to make the whole system run quicker). Each section covers all the components of LAMP as applied to that section. For example, the structural section examines installation, configuration, security, and basic usage of Linux, Apache, MySQL, and Perl. For Perl it includes a discussion of variables, arrays, operators, flow-control, regular expressions, functions, and file input/output. For MySQL it includes working with tables, insert, select, update, and similar basic commands. This is a very well done section and gives all the basic information necessary to get each of the components up and working with each other. The section on static web pages mainly covers the use of Website META Language (WML) to generate a consistent look and feel across all the web pages on the server. The part on dynamic web pages covers CGI and mod-perl so you can process information submitted by an html page or other CGI script. It also includes information on using Perl to access the MySQL server and generate dynamic information. The final section examines embedded programs such as Server Side Includes (SSI), embedded Perl, MASON, and PHP and how they are used to make a faster dynamic web site.

I have to say that I really liked this structure. Once a system is set up it is rare to have to refer to the installation information again. If it were organized by Linux, Apache, MySQL and Perl then I would have to flip to what I assume is the appropriate section turn past the installation portion and try to locate what I am looking for. This way, since it is organized by the various stages of getting the system up and running it is easier to find what I want.

The text includes lots of example coding so you can actually write and test it right away. This is a great way to learn the basics. It is not a thorough course in any of the four components but it does give you enough of a background to do most of what you might need to do. Of course, what makes it really valuable is the fact that it covers how to get each of the components to work together without problems. There are good books on each of these components but it is rare to find one that focuses on the interrelationships between them. "Open Source Web Development with LAMP" is highly recommended for anyone who wants to set up a LAMP server or needing to work with one.

Open Source Web Development with LAMP is a very long title, but an absolutely killer book. LAMP is Linux (OS), Apache (web server) MySQL (database), Perl and PHP (scripting). This book also includes many languages not covered in other titles. I was particularly glad to see WML (Website Meta Language) which is useful for generating static pages through a robust programming construct. Static pages load faster and without any security concerns that you have with dynamic scripting languages like perl, php, embperl, or mason, all of which are covered extreemly well in this book.

I've been doing web development for about 8 years, which probably makes me pretty old in the business. I've seen the dynamic web content languages from infancy, but I've never seen a good way of learning them until now. OSWD w/ LAMP is absolutely fabulous.

Required reading for any web designer.

Open Source Development with LAMP (hereafter "OSWB") is the perfect book to learn a wide variety of server technologies that will have you writing useful, clean, fast, and productive websites before you finish reading.

I was one of the technical editors of this book, and was able to watch it evolve as they wrote. The authors have made a huge effort to make the book appropriate for multiple Linux distributions, and they have achieved the highest degree of technical accuracy.

OSWB covers many different technologies, some complementary, some discreet. By showing you many of the possible tools, this book lets you decide which is best for the job at hand.

The theory behind OSWB is that knowledge of 20% of a tool's capabilities will let you accomplish 80% of the tasks you face. OSWB does a superb job of giving the user a sizable introduction to webserver technologies that will be sufficient for most rojects, and tells you where you can get information for advanced needs...This is the first book I know of that has written their website with the exact same tools they teach you in the book, and they offer the entire source of their website for download for your investigation and reference.

The gold in this book is not just the descriptions of how the languages work, but how you can use them singly or together to create interactive websites. Their are many sample projects which let you see how everything fits together, and much of the ode can be adapted immediately to your needs. The book is extremely well integrated and organized.

I have used some of the languages described in this book, while others were completely new to me. I am definitely not a web design person, preferring to write back-end server software. owever while reading OSWB, I was charged with creating a MySQL database with a customizable web interface for my alumni organization. Using only this book and a few perldoc commands, I was able to create an interactive mod_perl website in a few days.

This book offers something to everyone, even advanced web designers. If you are starting out in Web technologies, or are curious about other ways you can get the job done, this is the book for you.

Great Book! I have been using ColdFusion for 3 years, and read many ColdFusion books. Every book I've come across simply tells you "how" to do stuff. I can only learn how to do a so many times. However, Optimizing ColdFusion takes a different approach - it takes what I already know, and shows me how to do it well. This is the first CF book I have read that covers the core development obstacles that we as ColdFusion developers and designers struggle with on a daily basis. Not only does this book analyze trouble areas, but it also shows how to improve upon application design, coding, and even some troubleshooting. I also liked that this book brushed on the Fusebox methodology, and discussed how Spectra impacted enterprise ColdFusion development. The information is this book seems to define the distinction between ColdFusion developers and ColdFusion gurus. I would definitely recommend this book to other ColdFusion users.

Although there is some good basic level information in this book, it is not for the person trying to learn how to program Cold Fusion, but how to make your Cold Fusion programming better. The book has great examples and how tos of everything from setting up the Cold Fusion Administrator to writing better SQL statements. I particularly found the SQL statement information very helpful. The author (Chris Cortes) goes beyond writing simple SELECT, UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE statements. He gets into far more complex SQL like writing SELECT statements within a SELECT statement, and writing your SQL so that you optimize the speed of your queries. He also provides good examples of the new query of a query functionality that CF 5.0 offers. Cortes also offers great information on the proper usage of various CF tags and functions, not just telling you how to use them, but when it is best to use them. Overall, this is the best CF book I have read. However, make sure you know a little something about CF before buying this book.

Visually stunning, Photo-Graphics is an authoritative, intelligent exploration of a well-chosen, eclectic mix of subjects and their photo/graphic projects. Gilmore demonstrates a keen and appreciative eye for his material, with technically deft, exquisitely rendered, yet accessible layouts and thoughtful text. An excellent reference for designers but should find a place on a lot of coffee tables too, as even the layperson will find Photo-Graphics fascinating.

It's a very short book, and it teaches you by example. If you have previous programming experience with something that uses a similar syntax (C++, for example), you can learn the basics of PHP/MySQL in a casual week with this book, after which you can use it for a very useful reference. It doesn't delve into classes much, nor into security, but it serves as a great quick-start into PHP/MySQL regardless and will have you writing your first useful PHP-enhanced websites within a week or two.

There is a newer version of this book now, updated for PHP 5, so you will likely want to buy that instead of this one.

This book is simply marvelous. It is straight forward and deals with all essential topics on PHP. This book begins with installation, configuration and testing of Apache and MySQL for the purpose of PHP. The rest of the book deals with basic PHP programming to advanced topics such as PHP & MySQL together. Every chapter of the book comes with tutorial and working code examples. Other topics includes 'Sending Email with PHP', 'File Handling with PHP' and 'User Authentication'. Mike McGrath did a good job by making this book concise, practical and handy. As an experience programmer, I find it the only book I need to get started with PHP. It gets you to understand how PHP works conceptually through the examples given. Highly recommended.

I bought this book based upon the recommendations of 2 associates who, like me, lost their job because of a company reorganization. They were so high on the book that I decided to try it out. After an introduction designed for people with little or no Internet experience, the book immediately starts you on your job search. The author doesn't try to tell jokes or be cute. Instead, he lays out a very logical approach and technique for online job searching. Examples and exercises are put together so that you are actually building your own job search campaign as you work through the book. The book is comprehensive, easy to use, and really is "free of techno-babble" as the author claims. Don't buy this book if you want to curl up with something in bed. Buy it, though, if you want to use the Net to look for a job. I have seen other books that discuss Internet job searching. This one is absolutely the best I have seen.

Great Book on the Zend Framework.
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-13
The only quip I have with this book is the title "Practical Web 2.0 Applications with PHP" it should be called "Practical Zend Framework Applications using PHP"

There is not one example in the book that doesn't use the Zend Framework. That being said the Zend Framework is a great framework - but far the best web framework I've seen. I'm PhD student in Computer Science at UCLA whose dissertation research involves the web. I've used a lot of web applications and frameworks. Symfony, Drupal, Joomla, Ruby on Rails, etc.

Most of these applications and frameworks just suck - that is, it is more work using them than not using them and many severely limit what one can ultimately do.

I like Ruby on Rails but I love the Zend Framework. There are two big differences between the Zend Framework and Ruby on Rails: 1) they both promote MVC style programming but Ror forces you to use it everywhere and the Zend Framework allows you to mix MVC with simply using their framework as a library wherever you want. For example, I am building a social network but want to mix that with a related wiki. I can use MVC for all the social network code and use and existing MediaWiki (which is not MVC based) all I need to do is rewrite some of the mediaWiki code to hand over user authentication to my controllers.

2) it's Php based ... there is much, much more existing Php code to cannibalize for applications than Ruby code

The book itself basically takes you through setting up user profiles, a blog, an image gallery, prototype (javascript) and Google maps using the Zend Framework. The code is very professional and complex at times so a beginning user may have to read a chapter 2-3 times to fully understand it. Still the only way to really learn to write "professional" code is to see it and understand why it was written as it was.

There are some issues I have with the book. In places where something could reasonably be done in multiple ways the book only shows one without any explanation why that way was chosen. For example, in the installing Zend chapter the book tells you to edit the httpd.conf file to set your paths. Most people who use a commercial hosting company don't have access to edit httpd.conf or restart the server. There are ways to reset the path within the Zend bootstrap (which I did) but if I didn't know how to do that I would not have been able to get the examples to work without setting up a server locally on my machine.

Also the bootstrap is left in the index.php file when Zend recommends using the index.php to call the bootstrap.php file from a non-public web directory.

The Zend Framework is only a few months old and this is by far the best web framework out there. There is only one other (decent) book on the framework. This book is about the Zend Framework and only marginally about "Web 2.0" (you use Google maps). The book that should have been titled "Practical Zend Framework Applications using PHP" will teach you how to use the best web framework out there. If the next book shows one how to really use web services, ajax and present web services using the Zend Framework then it can be called "Web 2.0" not this one.

PHP Web 2.0 using Zend and Smarty

First of all. What is Web 2.0? Everyone has a definition. The important point is how does THIS BOOK define it. The author of this book defines Web 2.0 as sites that use: standard compliant HTML/CSS, use AJAX, share data using web services, and incorporate social networking tools. This book seeks to show the reader how to use the four components in conjunction with PHP.

The cover of the book states "Develop a complete PHP web application from start to finish." This is exactly what the book does. As the chapters progress you are shown how to create a blog that also includes an image gallery. Additionally, Google maps integration is covered. While, the author is not necessarily advocating that you create blog software from scratch, the blog is perhaps the quintessential Web 2.0 application. This allows the book to highlight the four main design criteria of Web 2.0.

This book makes extensive use of the Smarty and Zend frameworks. The Zend framework is used to achieve the Web 2.0 goals. In many ways this book could be considered a guide to using the Zend framework. MySQL is also used.

The book contains many code examples and demonstrates many techniques that can be reused in any web 2.0 project.

After thoroughly going through every chapter in this book (somtimes several times to understand exactly how everything was linking together) I have an incredibly improved understanding on how you might go about building a more complex web application, and an advanced understanding of the MVC pattern.

Every section is extremely well laid out, and the code is explained in detail (in most cases.) The only times where an explanation is lacking are when an approach has been previously explained in the book. Use that memory!

I think if you really dig into and understand this code, you may find yourself well ahead of a lot of your peers.

I even had a problem with one piece of code, and the author was kind enough to reply to my e-mail and help me troubleshoot the problem. (It was my fault.)

Highly suggest this book!
