There is no defense for feminism here. There is no defense for patriarchy either. Neither Jesus nor Paul, nor any other 1st Century Believer, minimized, dismissed... OR glorified... the place of women in ministry or the Body of Christ. It took an additional four hundred years for women to be relegated to "the back of the bus" and was the result of intentional malice of forethought.

The First Century Body of Christ did not function as "the MEN of God" exclusively, as we have been led to believe, while the women were only good for preparing meals, raising children, and creating more men. Women were fully functioning members of the Body of Christ as described throughout the New Testament... on every level, in every capacity. A CAREFUL reading of the ORIGINAL text documents this as fact. Neither men NOR women held positions above one or the other... "ALL are subject one to ANOTHER in Christ." Only GOD holds authority above any other. "... to be great in God's Kingdom..."

Gene Edwards further informs this position by laying out the HISTORICAL record of the subjugation of women in the Body of Christ in general, and in areas of ministry in particular, exposing the roots of the modern "biblical" teaching that women are "to be silent" in the church and are forbidden "to teach anyone other than children and other women." Original New Testament scriptural texts do not bear these teachings or beliefs out, if they are researched with an honest and true spirit. There is no case for "feminism" here, either!!!

To do nothing more than read the QUOTES of the "church fathers" beyond the first century, could cause one to ask, "why are women permitted to defile the Christian faith... at all? In ANY capacity whatsoever?" It was truly appalling to the point of physical nausea to learn the opinions of men (toward women) who have been held up as the pillars of the Christian Church... and explains an awful lot about why the latter day church has been so impotent compared to the First Century church as recorded in Acts.

This book holds the hope of not only setting Women Free... perhaps more importantly, it holds the hope of setting MEN and the Body of Christ free to be all we are called and created to be in Him.

At the very least, anyone who teaches or believes that women have no place in ministry and/or are, in any manner whatsoever, somehow "less than" their brothers in Christ, who also profess to seek and embrace Truth, would do well to HONESTLY examine and research and entertain the possibility that they do not have ALL the facts on the issue. Do as Gene Edwards has done... look beyond the doctrine of men and teachings passed down, unquestioned, for seventeen hundred years. Be prepared to SEE what has been right there in the scriptures you've read and studied all along, but edited out, without realizing it... the facts that have been right there in plain sight. Honestly research who Lydia, Priscilla, Junias, and many other women throughout the New Testament were and what they did and how they were viewed in the church in their time... and then reconcile it with the FEW MIStranslated scriptures that CONTRADICT many other verses, teachings, and examples of scripture. It was these contradictions that drove me back into research and led me to Gene Edwards' book... which explained why I kept running into the same arguments and contradictions.

Serious "Truth Seekers" will at least be open to examining these points and this research for themselves. Most will likely dismiss it as more feminist progaganda... and continue to do a disservice to half the Body of Christ... and therefore, to the Body as a whole. And that would be truly a shame and loss to all...

AN EXCELLENT READ

This is an excellent book on so many fronts. Firstly, it clarifies an issue that has always felt so alien; the subduing of a sister in Christ. Secondly, Christ's radical view of women becomes all the more revolutionary when placed in the context of the first century. Paul carries this message in his letters in a completely consistent manner, bringing true reform to the fledgling church. Thirdly, we are confronted with facts that demonstrate that translations are not perfect and can often be intentionally biased. What a blessing it is when confusion over Bible verses that appear contradictory suddenly fall into line and paint a beautiful picture. Next, the genesis of a home church is transformed from theoretical to practical. So many questions exist about how a fellowship is to interact; a tangible formula is included to create a vibrant, living organism. Finally, Gene's book amplifies the beauty of women. When I view Christ's love demonstrated towards women, I cannot help but love my sisters in Christ all the more. This book could even be looked upon as a marriage builder, strengthening the love and respect a husband and wife have for each other; my wife is even more beautiful after seeing her through the eyes of Christ.

I have given away several copies. Granted, some will be burned, but others will bring forth freedom, for it was for freedom that Christ has set us free.

This book threatens the lifeblood of the institutional church... that being man-power! Edwards dispels the lies surrounding women and their involvement in the Kingdom of God.

This book begins with quotes from many renown men throughout the last 1700 years of church and secular history. The quotes are taken from men that are highly esteemed in Christianity. For example, Jerome (translated the Latin Vulgate) said, "Woman is a temple built over a sewer." John Calvin said, "All women are born that they may acknowledge themselves as inferior to the male." Martin Luther, "There is no gown or garment that worse becomes a woman than when she would be wise." And how bout this one from King James (authorized the first English Bible)... "To make women learned and to make a fox tame work out to the same end. Educating woman or a fox simply makes them more cunning."

Now, these men primarily represent a major shift in church history, biblical thought, and translation. It ought to be a little discomforting to know that these men felt this way about women. And they have much to do with the modern day church teachings and practice concerning women. Not only about women... but also in our understandings of the ministerial roles of apostle, pastor, deacon, etc.

Edwards traces the long history of chauvinism within the church. He goes to the heart of the original text and reveals how the Bible was translated in a way that would support the second-class citizenship of women. He harmonizes passages like 1 Cor. 11, 14; Eph. 5; 1 Tim. 2 with the rest of Scripture. He shows how Jesus' treatment of women in the Gospels along with the rest of the New Testament proves there to be mistranslations within the "anti-woman" passages.

Get this book! Edwards (an ex-Southern Baptist) deals with the tough questions in the text and convincingly argues that men have been suppressing women since the Fall. Learn how his cry to the church is not a part of the "so-called feminist movement." It is about returning to the heart of Galatians 3:28.

I also want to recommend:

I read this book six years ago during a difficult time in my life. Through a dilligent study and a steady application of the principles in this book, my life was radically changed. The scripturally based teaching on the problems for which deliverance is helpful, and the emphasis on the fact that most Christains can indeed obtain self-deliverance over a period of time was the key for me. I keep a copy of this book in my home at all times, and have given copies to others who are facing struggles calling for deliverance in their own lives.

The BEST resource on this topic of many, many I researched.

At first I was not impressed by this book. The writing style seemed rambling to me. I wanted the authors to get to the point and tell me how to kick demon butt. They did finally do that in very practical, step-by-step ways.

I have read at least a dozen books and maybe as many websites on the topic of deliverance and have bought at least 25 tapes on the subject. Too bad I got this book last not first! The others were valuable, but to me this one was the best because it most fully helped me realize that deliverance isn't a quick fix. It takes time (and I'm talking about self-deliverance most especially) but is sooo worth the effort!

Moses told the Israelites that "little by little" they would drive out the -ites (Canaanites, Amorites, etc. etc.), their enemies, from the Promised Land. That is how it is for us, too, in regard to our UNseen enemies, most commonly.

There are a number of recipes that I love in theory and usually only like in practice. These recipes involve ingredients and concepts that I find very appealing, but there's just something about the way the individual recipes get executed that leaves something to be desired. Stuffed mushrooms fall into this category. Recipes like this make great test recipes when I'm evaluating a cookbook because usually their quality is highly dependent on a careful balance of flavors, good technique, and adequate kitchen-testing. So, naturally, one of the recipes we made from this cookbook was the stuffed mushroom recipe. It turned out to be the best stuffed mushroom recipe I've ever had--everything that I've always felt stuffed mushrooms ought to be but rarely were. They were buttery, slightly crispy, flavorful, easy-to-make, and absolutely delightful.

My only reservation, and it's a tiny one, is that the cookbook sometimes sticks with older, stodgier techniques when newer, faster ones do the job just as well. I'm sure it would stick in many chefs' throats to suggest that you could spray the mushrooms with olive oil cooking spray instead of painstakingly brushing them with olive oil using a pastry brush, but I did half of the mushrooms one way and half the other and honestly couldn't tell which mushrooms were which--there were no identifiable differences in the finished product.

The full-color photographs that go with the recipes are simple, elegant and lovely. The layout is easy to understand, with the different elements of the recipes set off visually from one another and the instructions broken into bite-sized chunks. The recipes are surprisingly uncomplicated, although as mentioned in some places they could be even simpler; certainly for elegant holiday fare this is easy cooking.

The point is, no matter what I pulled from this cookbook--new, old, doubtful, sure thing--it rose to the occasion. Every single recipe delighted us. Each one left us sighing with happiness. So whether you want to make crab bisque this Christmas (or Thanksgiving, or Easter, or New Year's, or other holiday of your choice), butternut squash and apple soup, rack of lamb with cranberry-chile relish, brisket braised in red wine, wild rice pilaf with dried cranberries and pecans, chocolate mousse cake, chicken hash, panettone French toast, gougeres, eggnog, or even chocolate truffles, I highly recommend picking up a copy of this cookbook. It's definitely worthy of any special occasion you might wish to celebrate.

I have the printed collection of Sherlock Holmes stories and this has all of them and more. Wonderful mysteries that I can enjoy over the years. Just great for my Kindle library when I'm browsing for a short mystery or a novel. The Hound of the Baskervilles is my favorite. A great collection. The Sherlock Holmes stories ruined all the TV mysteries for me decades ago. After reading Doyle's stories the TV mysteries became very shallow and juvenile in comparison.

Speaking as a counseling therapist, who specializes in codependent, abusive and other dysfunctional behavior patterns, with only very minor exceptions I agree with and recommend this book to all abusers to incorporate into their ongoing therapy. I also recommend it for therapists who treat both abusers and their victims, the codependent.

As a trained domestic violence perpetrator and victim treatment counselor, and one who has been in abusive relationships, myself, I know first-hand the details of these patterns, their causes and their cures. This book is am important part of the awareness, which is the first part of moving oneself toward that cure.

Read and take heed (both of you!)... Do not discount this important book.

There comes a time in everyones life when they must take accountability for their own actions. Bravo to Mr Robertson for having not only the bravery to take that resposibility, but for taking the initiative to share those lessons. This book is an invaluable resource for the abuser, the abused, and those who have suffered while watching a loved one go through the cycle. It is obvious that this book has an advantage over all other books that I have read on this subject, in that the personal perspective and intimate insight into the mind of the abuser is so overwhelming and so convincing, as to make other studies seem cold and analytical. If you are truly ready to make a change for the better in your life, and if you are willing to take accountability of your own actions, than you are ready for this book.

Lauren Baratz-Logsted brings humor back to the short story. In this scene starring one of the supporting characters from the wickedly funny The Thin Pink Line and Crossing the Line, the author riffs on the modern world of publishing and online forums. A delicious Godiva chocolate of a story, this will appeal to the modern reader of classics as well as chick lit.

The short story format allows new readers to sample an unfamiliar author, to try out a new genre, or just to get a quick, punchy, fiction fix. Not all authors deal equally well with short and long forms of narrative, but here the author demonstrates that her talent is broad, as well as deep. Her sense of humor is quirky and charming, she is observant, and deft at quick sketches of characters. Enjoy.

Weighing in at almost 1200 pages, and consisting of 140 essays from the world's top Jewish scholars, this book doesn't sound like something you'd bring to the beach -- but in reality, it's not so bad. The essays, organized alphabetically and each dealing with a specific topic ("Aesthetics," "Aggadah," "Anti-Judaism and Antisemitism," "Apocalypse," "Atheism," "Authority," "Bible Criticism," "Catastrophe," "Charity," etc), read more like sermons than academic research papers. In other words, they're unpretentious. I don't know how the editorial team managed to rein in 140 independent authors and convince them to all write like human beings, but kudos to them for pulling it off. It couldn't have been easy. I can't even pick up a collection of the best essays in European philosophy without having to plow through 40 pages of dreck by some clown who's trying to mathematically prove that we're not all brains in vats.

Anyway, everything in this book is both solid and reasonable; it's a book to be respected and, more to the point, it's a book to be read. Pick it up and read a random essay -- any essay. You won't be disappointed.

These essays from one- hundred and forty experts on various subjects central to Judaism are organized in alphabetical order. The essays as to be expected are not of uniform quality but many are truly outstanding. I remember one essay especially and that is Aviezer Ravitzky's essay on the concept of ' Shalom'. In a beautiful piece Ravitzky shows the various levels of the concept's meaning in Judaism. It is not simply ' peace' as the absence of war but rather defines the ideal relation within a person within a family within a society, the ideal relationship in which there is harmony, balance and completion. And of course 'Shalom' is too one of the Names of G-d.
It is difficult to read any of these essays without learning something fundamental and important in Judaism. I would say it is a must for the library of every serious student of Judaism.

Students don't like to buy books for their college courses but every now and then there is one they keep and enjoy for the rest of their lives. This is one of them. The late Arthur Cohen and Paul Mendes Flohr assembled a remarkable array of first rate authors to write on an encyclopedic range of topics relevant to an understanding of what Judaism is all about from a contemporary perspective. I've used the book since 1994 in an intro to Judaism course I offer every year, and I have never been disappointed. Occasionally, the essays demand a bit much from an undergraduate student. But as long as s/he is ready to engage in reading texts that don't dum down the issue, s/he'll get something valuable out of it. I recommend this book most highly.

The women profiled in "Cool Women, Hot Jobs" do more than talk about their great jobs, they talk about how they got there, what worked, what didn't, and what they learned along the way. Think of them as "life coaches" with an inside track. Tina Landon, who choreographs award-winning videos for J-Lo, Janet Jackson, Ricky Martin, etc., reminds readers that even while she was performing in videos, she was cleaning houses and working in restaurants to make ends meet. Courtney Macavinta, a Web editorial director, points to the digital divide and how Latina girls like her have a traditionally low entry rate into college. WNBA guard Betty Lennox reveals that she had to adjust to the difference between college ball and the hard-core level of play and expectation at the pro level. It is clear, however, that these women love what they do. They encourage readers to take positive risks, and set and plan to achieve goals, one step at a time.

With its great stories, solid advice, and goal-setting (and getting) tips, "Cool Women, Hot Jobs" is the perfect gift for pre-teens and teens and the right book for teachers and counselors to have on hand when encouraging girls to think about (and shape) their own future, today. Highly recommended!

This is an ambitious project. It has the usual problems of ambition: sometimes it touches on areas which the author doesn't know very well. But the author also seems to know an awful lot, so that even the things she doesn't know well seem to be productively dealt with. It is not so much that anything she says is particularly new, but the scope of vision is. It cuts across political theory, sociology, management studies, macro-economics, international relations. It looks at the micro level as well as the macro level, and several intermediate levels too, of corporate capitalism. And it brings together a coherent picture, not wholly new but amazingly big. On the whole, the achievement outweighs the defects. It deserves the highest rating.

My first impression: another conspiracy theory (CEOs villains, principal shareholders super-villians), with a bit more jargon than usual thrown. Then Enron, Xerox, and on and on -- so a closer look. My second impression: this is an extraordinary book, prophetic, profound ... Once I get used to the jargon, the know-it-all air of it, it grows on me. No conspiracy here -- just the systems and structures of this crazy world intermeshed, and here I get a sense of both the beauty and the terror of trying to simply understand it.

I have just given this a more or less cursory reading so far, paying more attention to the sections on "managerialism" and philosophy. I think it's great. I agree with the other reviewer. Must read again. Particularly strong in being concise and clear about broad areas without being simplistic.

It's in three parts. The first lays out (obsessively I thought) the methodology for studying corporate capitalism from a philosophical perspective. The second is the key part. In it the role of managerialism in corporate capitalism is examined by looking at the micro-issue of executive pay, with unexpected results. Gupta suggests that managerialism as normally understood doesn't really exist at all, is a vacuum. The third part is a detailed, and for the informed, fascinating study of some well-known neo-liberal thinkers (with the odd inclusion of Manneheim there).

I read Gupta's other book, on 11 September -- Replication of Violence it's called -- in UK and thought it is terrific. Strangely we don't seem to have it here yet. Came to this as a result. A rewarding experience.

I felt lost and abandonded until I read this book. The person I loved the most was gone. I was unable to love myself or anyone else and was sinking in despair. The book enabled me to get back in touch with the loving part of myself. It helped me nurture myself through the pain of my loss. What is most awesome about the book is that it helped me to identify what I was most missing about that person and use that quality to strengthen myself and share with others. It was a Godsend in helping me through the death of my mother and my divorce.
