I've read over this book and I love it. Unlike other Navy Seals book, it doesn't insult you. It encourages you to try out new stuff and to keep doing them. I personally love the section about swimming. I've been swimming sidestroke and freestyle for quite a while in preparations for my 5k run-swim-run this summer. I also plan to do a 13.1 miles run while will help out greatly. I really want to try the rope climbing exercise. However, I'm having trouble locating a rope to climb. I saw some ropes at Little Creek but I don't know if people can just use them whenever.

Overall, the book is very neat. It shows you pictures and instructions on how to do the proper sets. The book even has a "plan" in the back. It goes over everything from stretches, pushups, pull ups, swimming, running, and rope climbing. It's all very clear and very good.

I personally don't know if this book will prepare you for actual training for special operations. I do know that they are fun to do and the author is fairly nice about it. He doesn't insult you and he goes about to encourage you by knowing that not everyone who reads the book will be "SEAL material."

Another book I recommend is U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition by U.S. Navy. It's very informative and it breaks into two sections: fitness and nutritional advice.

A Must Buy!

This is perhaps the finest workout manual ever produced. I always have liked the idea of using callesthenics to get in shape beacause not only is it a little safer than weightlifting, but it can be done anywhere with no expensive gym membership or equipment. Before I would use the CJ CArracci dvd's, which dont get me wrong are an excellent workout too. But this is so much more complete. He breaks it down to 12 weekly workouts, that are different everyday and change weekly, progressively getting harder while switching things up to keep the workout fresh. There's swimming, running workouts, military callesthenics, and so much more. I have never been in this good of shape before. I can swim over a mile a day, jog for 5-6 miles at a time, and do pushups all day! Factor in that this book comes with a dvd to demo the excercises all for 13 bucks, and you will have the greatest tool in any workout arsenal.

Fantastic fitness book if there ever was one

I have been using this book as my fitness guide for the past month and a half now. I am a former Marine so I know the essentials for fitness, however this book goes far beyond the standard work out. I found that I was pushing myself harder on his "intermediate" workout than on just about any other fitness program I've used.

Whether you want to become a Navy SEAL or you just want to be in the best shape of your life, follow this book...you won't be disappointed!

Furst's First Good; Could Be Better

Stephen Fursts's mini-autobiography is interesting. As a Type 2 diabetic, he let himself gain weight and decline in health to the point where his neuropathy (loss of feeling in the limbs) allowed a sore on his foot to become infected. Faced with amputation, he made several lifestyle changes and not only kept his foot but lost half his weight and improved his overall health.

The second part of the book is his own commentary interspersed with recipes. The recipes are interesting, though not always appetizing. For instance, his instructions on making diabetic ketchup makes you question of you ever want any kind of ketchup period. He uses things from around the house and supermarket to create these substitutes for dishes he decided he liked but could not eat. What he lacks in style here he makes up for in creativity.

The downsides of the book are few but glaring. In one instance he calls the reality show Survivor as Survival. There are a few of the naggling little mistakes throughout the book and one realizes that Furst probably wrote the book without the help of a ghostwriter but also wonders why the ADA editors didn't do their job completely.

A second edition with more recipes, ana expanded autobiography, and an update to the present (the book was published in 2002) would all take this book from just pretty good to excellent.

A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO LOSE WEIGHT, HAS LOST WEIGHT, OR JUST NEEDS A GOOD CHUCKLE!

A hysterical memoir of growing up as a husky... plump...heavyset...Okay FAT! child, who struggled with weight problems through adulthood, Stephen shares his tips and recipes for how he went from an out-of-control 320 pound person with diabetes, to his lean, mean, low-fat eating machine of 175. (Although he still refuses to wear a Speedo!) A self-help cookbook of epic proportions or actually epic portions, filled with all kinds of tips, anecdotes, it includes everything from real recipes, (like cheesecake, soup, and pasta) to how to get through the holidays without killing yourself instead of your relatives. You've tried everything else, try laughing your way to better health. Key features:

 Inspirational and humorous-tells Stephen Furst's story of overcoming his problems with weight and out-of-control diabetes
 Includes the recipes that helped Stephen lose 150 lbs. and manage his diabetes
 Tips for eating out at restaurants without sabotaging your diet

Stephen Furst has been an actor for the past 23 years, starring in the classic movie comedy Animal House and two multi-award winning television series-St. Elsewhere and Babylon 5. After tipping the scales at 320 lbs. even though he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the age of 17, Stephen found himself in the hospital with the prognosis of a foot amputation. He decided to take charge of his life and dropped to his current weight of 175 pounds-where he has held steady for the last six years.

This book does anything but "flounder"!

What a fantastic memoire! I've enjoyed Furst's films for many years and was delighted to discover this book. I've struggled with weight my entire life and it seems like about this time (New Year's) every year I end up searching for another "diet" to follow. This year I get to say "NO" to the diet books and read Furst's book instead. Furst doesn't preach- he only shares his experience, his hope, and his fabulous sense of humor! The book will leave you feeling upbeat and ready to conquer the battle of the bulge using his sensible lifestyle recommendations that can be taylor-made to fit your life. You won't be hungry a moment and a guarantee you'll lose weight following his recommendations. Enjoy!

Collaboratively written by clinical psychologists Robert W. Firestone and Lisa Firestone, with the assistance of author/lecturer Joyce Catlett, Conquer Your Critical Inner Voice is an impressively "user friendly" self-help guide to learning how to overcome negative thoughts and self-imposed limitations. Individual chapters address how excessive self-criticism can interfere with intimacy, career, and general quality of life, and how it can co-opt oneself into addictive and unhealthily dependent behaviors. Strategies for learning how to restore balance and contentment to one's way of life, and also for choosing an effective therapist, offer a way out of the endless downward spiral of self-depreciating negativity. Conquer Your Critical Inner Voice is a highly recommended addition to personal reading lists and community library self-improvement, self-help reference collections.

The goal of CONQUER YOUR CRITICAL INNER VOICE is to provide the reader with the insights gained by Dr. Firestone, in 25 years of investigating the critical inner voice of living, & the ways he discovered of overcoming its harmful effects.

Guidelines & exercises in the book help readers identify their critical inner voices, to understand their source, & take action against these insidious defamers, so they can live a more fulfilling life, develop their own ideals & values, & embark on their own search for meaning in life.

CONQUER YOUR CRITICAL INNER VOICE is recommended for everyone who has ever been haunted by "inner voices" from the past. Since this includes just about all of us, it is a useful book which fills a needed slot in psychiatric literature. In particular, it is a good beginning step for people who have never been in therapy.

"Conquer Your Critical Inner Voice: A Revolutionary Program to Counter Negative Thoughts and Live Free from Imagined Limitations" is a powerful therapeutic work for dealing with the inner voice that holds us back. It is both an explanatory text that describes how we acquire a critical inner voice and its purpose in our lives and a workbook that walks the reader through exercises, questionaires and other activities to get it under control.

If you find that no matter what you do you don't seem to get what you want in life or you are often engaged in self-talk that is not positive in nature then this workbook could be the path to changing your life. A highly recommended read.

This book is simple, but it doesn't talk down to the reader. In the chapter, "How the critical inner voice interferes with your career", the section about playing the victim begins:

Playing the victim is often a sign that a person is refusing to be an adult at work.

How could you not embrace a book that is so direct and honest? I've been through tons and tons of crap lately, and have skimmed tons and tons of pop psychology and self help books. They all seem to fall into 4 categories: touchy-feely, new age, overly academic, and the worst, condescending superficially academic.

This one is a practical workbook for people who don't necessarily want or need to delve into their pasts, or rewrite their lives in a symbolic (new age) narrative, but just want to get through another day!

This book helps me look at my reality (which is created by my thoughts, feelings and attitudes) a little more rationally and objectively. There is no magic bullet for feeling better about oneself, so it's good to have the toolkit provided here to deal with that oh so critical inner voice.

I recommend this book, of the dozens of self-help books that I've reviewed, it's the only one I would recommend to anyone.

I had been looking for some kind of resource to educate myself about what I could do to improve my credit score. A friend recommended "CreditBooster" and I was very happy to find it extremely helpful and easy to understand. It lays out step-by-step what I should do to start improving my credit score in simple, concise terms. It also made sure to explain what different financial terms mean without getting bogged down in confusing jargon.

I learned a lot of things I didn't know about budgeting, managing my money, and not getting in over my head with debt. I will definitely use what I learned from "Credit Booster" to avoid making the same mistakes again.

I bought this to learn more about my family's heritage.

Seems as though I already KNEW a lot that this book didn't even touch on.

Still is a worthwhile reference. I was torn between giving it 3 or 4 stars. It isn't a 5 star book as it could use some help with flow and there is a lot of salient points that just wasn't included. However a lot of information is presented here...to give substance to the fact that Creole is a culture, a heritage. That alone gives it merit.

I am delighted to find that my academic peers of creole decent have endeavored to put together our past in such a marvelous way. I have spent many hours in the New Orleans Public Library and have visited the Armistead Center but have never had the time to sit down and put all the information together so that I could start to compare the fact to the stories that were passed on to me about my ancestors. Being light skinned black with a french maiden name, I am often questioned as to my family background. My grandmother and mother's stories and my own experiences often amaze people as to how rich my background is. Now I have a book to pass on to my children as well as stories of my past. In an age of reams of wirtings about the diversity of America, I now have a book to pass on to them about my own diverse past - my creole legacy. Thank you Sybil Kein and company!

This book of essays is absolutely the best resource on the Creole heritage of Louisiana. The history is priceless and my hat goes off to Dr. Kein for compiling such a group of scholars and historians who have covered every aspect of the subject. I have many books and have done much research since the late eighties as part of my research on African American history. This book has been a long time in coming. I thank Anthony Barthelemy for his essay "Light, Bright, Damn Near White" which answered my questions of the infamous Susie Guillory case, the woman who "discovered" she was considered "Colored" when she went to get a passport in the 80s. I always wondered what they true story was and now I know. I enjoued learning about Marcus Chritian through violet Harrington Byan's essay exposing his research on Creoles. All of the essays are worth reading and referring to again and again. Composers of color of Nineteenth-Century New Orleans was an eye-opener. I had heard about them but found very little information until this. The essay by Joan Martin on placage answered alot of questions for me of why and will be helpful for my friend who is writing a thesis on Creole women and the institution of placage. Oh, and Sybil Kein's "The Use of Louisiana Creole in Southern Literature" was worth the whole book. This essay brought home full circle of my studies of some of the writers who have written about literature, race, and passing. I could go on and on. Creole Poets, their professions and trades, the food connection. It is all wonderful. I count this book as one of my best investments for 2000 with the wealth of knowledge in it. This should be in the library of every American historian, black, white, or other.

In Michael Perry's entertaining picturebook Daniel's Ride, it's the first day of summer vacation and young Daniel is anxiously awaiting the arrival of his big brother Hector and his custom '63 Impala Low Rider. The two bothers cruise the boulevard, compete in a low rider hopping context at the beach, and drive downtown to visit their artist cousin Diego as he paints an elaborate mural. It is during this wonderful day's journey that Daniel receives an unexpected gift from his big brother -- determination. Lee Ballard's artwork is perfectly suited to Perry's entertaining story of two brothers, a car, and a beautiful sunny day.

This is a wonderful story for kids, and adults, about low riders, a subject that is often misunderstood and maligned. Not much is availibale for children on the topic, especially told from their point of view. DANIEL'S RIDE is about much more than Hector's promise of his cool car to his little brother Daniel. It's about hopes and dreams and relationships, all of which lead to the story's broad appeal. Every year I buy a least one book for a friend in Arizona who is a reading specialist working in a bilingual setting. This book has been the biggest hit yet! Her students in Tucson love it and can't get enough of it. Perry and his illustrator Lee Ballard have a real hit here!

Daniel eagerly awaits a promised ride in his older brother Hector '63 Impala convertible “complete with spider hydraulics and gold wire wheels.” Together they celebrate the first weekend of summer vacation. They turn up the volume on their music and cruise, transforming the Impala into “a funky barrio carnival ride.” They join the cool cars cruising the beech before visiting the cousin. When the ride is over, Hector promise the car to Daniel if he finishes high school and plans to go to college.

Author Michael Perry brings his street-savvy writing style to children’s books in DANIEL’S RIDE. With the lyricism gained with his musical background, and an intense understanding of what motivates children, Perry creates a fun, hotrodding tale of sun, brothers and cars certain to delight young readers. Crisp, believable, readable dialog combine lends the story vibrant energy and promise. Very highly recommended.

Ron Geskey is an advertising industry insider with experience at Leo Burnett and D'Arcy. As a web marketing professional, I can appreciate the range in focus, from Internet-based PPC and rich media to the more traditional areas of tv, radio, newspaper, magazine and outdoor. Should be appreciated by marketing directors at small and medium businesses, boutique agencies, and entrepreneurs alike--anyone buying media and dealing with media rates.

Essential Small Business Marketing Tool

Review Date: 2007-11-28
"David & Goliath" provides an essential primer for the small business owner on the important topics of marketing and media buying.

Geskey is certainly a media maven: the book is well thought-out and each chapter might well stand alone as a reference tool on each topic. The Problems & Exercises at the end of each chapter are clearly designed to reinforce the main lessons of the chapter and learners who take the time to work on them definitely stand to gain a thorough grounding in media and marketing.

Of particular note are the discussions in later chapters: Chapter 9 for the advantages & disadvantages of various media-buying processes ... Chapter 10's Internet strategies and the need for a professional-looking Web page ... fun Creative Media ideas (Chapter 11): blogs, newsletters, podcasts and greeting cards ... how'barter' and 'media remnants' work in Chapter 12 ... and finally, Chapter 14 ("Hello Goliath!") -- an effective wrap-up and reminder for ESOV and the importance of Share of Voice and Quality of Voice.

Readers should not overlook the Appendix chock full of even more marketing tools: Worksheets for figuring sales objectives, tools for conducting a SWOT Analysis, and ideas for determining customer target markets, creating marketing objectives, determining primary market areas and thinking about communication strategies and budget considerations.

Overall, "David vs. Goliath: Guerilla Media Buying for Small Business" might well stand alone as a classroom text for small business owners seeking to implement marketing plans. In future, an updated edition of the book might include more discussion about 'buzz' or word-of-mouth marketing strategies, a bibliography containing citation information about the media and research studies contained in the book and a Glossary of Terms to help the reader refer to essential media definitions and marketing tools.

In a highly competitive marketplace, small business owners can often be overwhelmed with the difficult task of making consumers aware of their product. With so many huge business conglomerates dominating the market place, it can seem almost impossible for a small business to efficiently reach their target customers. In his book, David vs. Goliath: Guerilla Media Buying for Small Business, A New Way to Win, author Ronald Geskey shows that small businesses can not only succeed against the Goliaths, but can thrive in the dog eat dog world of big business.

Geskey explains that a key to growing a successful business is to use an innovative, well researched technique known as increasing your share of voice and your quality of voice. Through a step by step method, readers will learn how to make each advertising dollar work harder for them. By dramatically increasing your effective share of voice without increasing your budget in your market area, you can increase top of mind awareness of your product. This will then lead to increased sales and market share.

Not only does the author provide an in depth analysis and understanding of marketing and media, helpful methods and tools are provided to make the most of your advertising dollar. As Ronald Geskey states, "The key is to eliminate advertising spending waste."

Budgets are often wasted when the wrong type of communication is used for the job (e.g., direct mail vs. publicity) or the wrong media are used to reach the wrong target in the wrong place at the wrong time-- negotiated at the wrong price without value added and media investment safeguards.

When was the last time you read a book or an article about how to actually negotiate a media buy to get the most bang for your buck? Maybe never? Geskey's book provides clear steps on how to negotiate traditional and non traditional media buys to get substantially more media exposure for the budget.

Because successful communications with the consumer are critical to the success of a small business, the author discusses and provides an analysis of the many benefits and pitfalls of different marketing communications forms and various advertising media. Advertising media discussed include television, print, radio, internet, direct mail as well over 60 non traditional media approaches.

With well illustrated diagrams and exercises at the end of each chapter, the author provides the necessary tools and skills for you to make your small business a long term success. I plan to implement the strategies for my own business endeavors. I highly recommend the book to current business owners as well as to those planning to start a small business.

As owner and manager of a bookstore, I know that small business has always felt the challenge of how to become a "player" in the marketplace. Knowing our business purpose did not guarantee our ability to effectively market our business.

Had David vs. Goliath been available years ago it would have likely transformed my marketing of the business and its success. It also would have helped remove my ever present fear of the competition.

The book provides the tools to take the small business owner through the process of analyzing the business and business practices to the development of an innovative marketing strategy and plan to build sales and profit.

I had never even heard of share of voice, and certainly never thought of any linkage to sales or share of market. And even though I bought media, I now know how uninformed and naive I was, wasting a lot of money (resulting in lost sales and profit) without even knowing it.

The author also shows how we can make the internet work for us. He cuts through the confusion of selecting and buying the media at the right price place, and time.

Each chapter is filled with "secrets" which most owners of small businesses are unaware, at least I was.David vs. Goliath: Guerilla Media Buying for Small Business, A New Way to Win Every small business owner needs this insightful book!

My mother was just diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and she had a million questions which I couldn't seem to find sufficient answers to on-line. I purchased this book and she's been reading it for the past week and says it has answered every question she had about diabetes and how she should be eating. She's going to be talking to a dietitian soon and wanted to have a general understanding of the disease. She highly recommends this book to anyone with diabetes.

Everyone should eat like this

If everyone followed the advice in this book, we would all be much healthier and health care costs would decrease dramatically. The author outlines 4 keys to reducing pain and improving general health. The first, of course, is to lose weight -- even a small amount makes a difference. Other steps involve exercise, sleep and stress. The eating plan makes complete sense and can be followed easily, i.e., no hard-to-find foods and no elimination of complete food groups. It's basically an anti-inflammation diet plan which is recommended by many doctors (and many book writers.) I've been following the diet recommendations for a few weeks, mainly eliminating refined foods, and I've lost 1-2 pounds per week. This diet could be maintained for life in contrast to diets that are so restrictive that you can't wait to go OFF the diet - and return to former eating habits. I am thinking of buying this book for several friends and family members who would greatly benefit from this lifestyle.

I am about 35 pounds overweight and have struggled with joint pain for the past 5 years. I have tried everything since Celebrex was taken off the market and after being recommended this book by my sister, I can honestly say I finally found something that works! I have been on the diet for about 2 months and have lost 15 pounds already, which has done wonders for my pain- I don't have any! The recipes are also really good:)

I have purchased many diet books in the past, but Diet For A Pain Free Life is the one that I choose to follow from here on. I have arthritis and fibromyalgia, and just happened to see this book on the shelf while looking for another book. The recipes are easy and very good. I lost 6 lbs the first week I followed this diet. It is nutritionally superior to any other plan I have seen, with good tips on stretching and exercise also

Cara Brookins has chronicled a touching family tale and what it was like for many families during the Great Depression. Some famlies had it better than others, but heart willing, even the poorest of families could scrape up a little compassion. In a time when we have so much, Brookins highlight's the joy that can be obtained with having so little. A great book for all ages.----Steven Anderson Law
