In reading this book it seems to have a personal voice instead of dry boring facts. It has even been very handy to use as a reference book. Not only has it provided me with very useful financial advice and idea's, but has also helped me better understand my credit history (and how to improve my credit future) and further my investment knowledge.

Degunking Your Personal Finances is good advice from someone who clearly has seen a lot of different financial situations with her clients. It's an easy read with stories and tips that keep in moving along. I had the pleasure of interviewing Shannon Plate about her book on my Internet radio show, wsradio.com/everydaywealth and found her to exude the same "want to help" approach that her book takes.

I wish they would give a book like this to everyone entering college (before they offer all those credit cards!) This book offers great ideas on cleaning up credit and being more aware of the purchases you make. Like all the Degunking books, it is easy to read and not boring like most personal finance books! I definitely recommend this book to people who are trying to get a higher credit rating.

Finances sometimes being a difficult and stressful topic, I was extremely relieved at the ease of navigating and digesting the information in this well done book. The way the author uses humor and examples from her own experiences in her writing made me feel like I was sitting down having a conversation with a close friend. This book is the best I've seen on this topic!

Getting into financial difficulties is far too easy in today's society, and getting out is a struggle. Shannon Plate has written a book that will greatly aid you in the process of getting your financial house in order... Degunking Your Personal Finances (Paraglyph Press).

Contents:
Why Are My Finances All Gunked Up?; Where Do I Start Degunking My Finances?; Organizing Your Financial Life; Creating a Clear Picture of Your Financial Situation; Degunking Your Credit and Debit Cards; Degunking Your Consumer Debt; Degunking Your Home and Mortgage; Degunking Your Housing and Living Expenses; Degunking Your Savings and Investments; Degunking Your Credit Report; Fine-Tuning Your Budget; Degunking Other Expenses; Degunking Your Taxes, Benefits, and Insurance; Finding Hidden Money; Putting Your Computer and Other Technology to Work; Improving Your Credit Security; Backup and Emergency Planning; Index

All the Degunking titles are set up to have you follow a 12 step program that, if followed, will greatly improve the area being "degunked". In this case, it's your financial affairs. Plate starts out with the very basic first step... set up an area where you can organize all your financial papers. If they're scattered all over the place, the internal resistance and effort is multiplied. Then figure out where you really are with your finances, and start on cleaning up your credit and debit cards. Each additional step builds on that base and works up through the final step. Many of the later steps are ones that you can implement at any time (like implementing a financial security program, backing up financial records, etc.), but it all follows in a logical order. The author also doesn't offer any quick fixes to your problems. It's work to get out from under the pile, but if you structure your approach to doing so, it may not be quite as bad as you thought. And it's definitely not as bad as continuing to go down the same path and finding yourself unable to get credit due to bankruptcies or such...

Degunking Your Personal Finances is a well-written book that's personable and enjoyable to read. The author's personality shines through, and it's easy to follow her steps and suggestions to start cleaning up your life. And even if you think you have everything under control, you'll probably find some things in there that you can implement that will make your good situation even better. A highly recommended read...

This is a great book to introduce people to the concept of toxicity in the body. I am tired of the comment "Well, there's chemicals everywhere, whatya gonna do!" Well, what you need to do is to educate yourself to the realities of the toxic soup that we live in. Alarming yes, but denial will not make it go away. Knowledge is power and the sooner you get on board and learn what you need to do to cleanse yourself, particularly your digestive tract, the better off you will be. Who wants to enter that medical nightmare ?
Brenda Watson is a voice that is finally being heard and I am very happy that she has done the PBS specials and offered plenty of educational materials. I can't say that I support all of her product offerings, as a Nutritionist I have my own preferences. Nevertheless, her books are all good, especially for the layman who is willing to learn the truth about the environment we live in. Highly recommend !

This is something fresh and new - there's very little out there to recommend the best way to decorate and arrange dorm rooms, and this book fills that void. Written with a breezy, light touch, it's chock full of helpful ideas and tips on how best to maximize that tricky living space of a dorm room. There's plenty of charts and illustrations to help you grasp the concepts, which is great for those visual learners out there. It also emphasizes the role of choice and intention in our lives, and that's an important thing for any college student to consider.

I believe this book can be used as a helpful guide for any living space, and I'm incorporating the ideas into my own shared living space - a soon to be husband! This would be a great gift for your favorite graduate or friend.

This refreshing new look at Feng Shui is both easy to understand and fun to read. With plenty of diagrams for simple reference and Easy 1,2,3 Fixes, it is easy to pick up this book and flip to the section in which you need the most help. The book is great for recent graduates from high school or college because it doesn't require a lot a reading on top of schoolwork. The simple strategies are perfect for two (or more!) roommates just beginning to live together. Highly recommended to all!

Dorm Room Feng Shui a breezy and extremely readable book about feng shui for college students living in dorm rooms, and I wish I'd had a copy when I was in college, although to be fair, I'm a bit skeptical of the whole feng shui thing, or at least skeptical of the extremes to which I've heard some people enthuse about it. Regardless, a great deal of it seems to be common sense, and since there's a sad lack of that these days, I'm all for anything that genuinely helps people better themselves and their space. While I was reading it, I found myself thinking a few things. One: that I seemed to have been already intuitively incorporating a great deal of balance in my surroundings, according to the basic principles of feng shui. Two: that I wanted to know more and find out how the elements described in the book for small one-room living situations apply to large sprawling ranch-style houses like ours. Then I stopped halfway through and scribbled a list of things I wanted to improve and do during the next 2 weeks. This morning, I picked the book up again before I got out of bed and finished reading it, and then I jumped up, energized, and CLEANED THE WHOLE DARN HOUSE.

Sadly, Elli's book goes where Anne Frank's diary did not
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-19
Elli's story parallels Anne Frank's in some ways. In the spring of 1944, Elli and her Hungarian family still knew freedom. Elli was thirteen, with the typical crushes on boys we all remember from that age. Then the S.S. came and Elli, with her blonde braids, escaped the gas chamber only to become slave labor for the Third Reich.

How Elli ever summoned the courage to write this book is a miracle in itself. Elli witnessed and lived atrocities and cruelties beyond what I've read in any other book on the Holocaust. That she somehow gathered herself together enough (at a much later age) to dredge up and share these memories with the world is a sheer act of bravery and love.

This book is definitely not light bed-time reading. Don't read it if you don't like "depressing" books. Apart from other emotions, such as heartbreak and anger, by the time you finish the book you may also feel some of the emptiness and numbness that the survivors of Auschwitz and Dachau must have felt.

I ordered this book because the title caught my eye; did I get an eyefull! Not only is it well written - come on, when was the last time you read a book and enriched your vocabulary at the same time?? - but it makes sense!
I was in the camp of 'oh no, not another book about childhood and psychology' when I started it, but a couple of chapters into it my reticence transformed into curiosity and 5 or so chapters into it I was hooked. What stayed with me well after finishing reading it are the character types, the emotional reactions in all sorts of settings and - yes, at the risk of sounding like an advertisement - how to experience the moment.
I recommed this book to anyone who is a seeker or anyone trying to make sense of the incomprehensible.

Wow! I'm so glad I ordered this book. I'd originally found it by looking for a "how do I let go of my past issues" book for my boyfriend, as all the other books seemed to speak in dreamy metaphysical terms that turned him off. But here is a book that explains things in rational, reasonable terms without being preachy or flakey. I LOVE this book! I'm in the middle of it now, and already changes are happening, awareness is heightened and I'm feeling more confident about myself than I have in a long time. Aside from the fact that it's so straightforward, this book offers more than how to "help yourself." Emotionally Free becomes a helpful tool in unraveling the seemingly indiscernible motivations of others. Have you ever found yourself face to face with a friend or co-worker whose reaction over a negative issue was such a marked departure from how they normally might react, that you have been flushed with fear and anxiety? READ THIS BOOK! I can't say how many times I've turned a page, read a few lines, and been brought to a memory of an instance like that and was thrilled to finally gain some understanding of what had actually happened. Amazing! You will not only learn how to deal with your own emotions, but your understanding of others will help ease painful, irritating or downright infuriating confrontations with others. I cannot say enough good things about this book.

of a book by viscott (or any author) that elaborates on viscott's chapter "the skills for working through hurt"? I thought viscott's book was entirely worth while if only for that chapter and his 11 phrases that can be spoken to someone who has just said something hurtful in order to help diffuse the situation before it festers and turns into resentment and anger. These simple expressions have had a significant effect in my work life.

Review Date: 2005-11-17
The field of biology neglects bioenergetics more and more every year, as molecular approaches to whatever is fashionable reveal "hot" new signalling pathways and genetic mechanisms. The author bucks that trend and gives us an explanation of bioenergetics in a clear, gentle and understandable way. The conversational and informal style of writing allows the author to present topics as dry as electron transport and proton motive force in a way that is more than understandable, it is engaging and actually kind of fun! Brown never lets us forget that metabolic processes are amazing, awe-inspiring and inspirational. While Brown's coverage of basic physiology is excellent, later chapters get into areas (mental energy, etc.) where we really have a lot to learn. These chapters are necessarily heavier on speculation. There is a big and excellent appendix that presents a brief history of bioenergetics, and sources for further reading are provided.

The simple energy always prevails

The "Energy of Life" was full of technical information on mitochondria. Yet, the most practical information was simple. Guy C. Brown told me exactly what I wanted to know, if you want more energy now, do what you like to do. It sounds ridiculously easy, but it works. The problem is most of us most do things we hate. So, I guess we either need to start liking what we do, or do more of what we like, in order to have more energy. See if your doctor will write you a prescription for a new job instead of Zoloft the next time you complain of depression and fatigue. That would be the "Energy of Life" cure at least.

I have read no book better written or more informative than "Energy of Life" - I have also met with a teaching colleague of Guy Brown, Aubrey De Grey, one of the world's foremost geneticists and life extension specialists, and he affirmed the awesome intellect and formidable communication skills of Professor Brown.. You will understand more than you would have thought possible about the energy of life once you've read the approximately 250 pages, and you'll also understand the conditions necessary to promote the energy in your life. This book will imbue you with a clear understanding of the constituents of your own life's energy. Many thanks to Guy Brown for such helpful, clear exposition on such a complex subject. This book is considered, I believe, a popularization because of Brown's lucid writing, - and not due to any science sacrificed for readability.

One of the hallmarks of the healthy low-carb lifestyle is avoiding not just refined carbohydrates like sugars, but also choosing to avoid those so-called healthy whole grains as well. For some people who have celiac disease, they don't have the luxury of choosing whether they eat grains or not--they cannot or they might die. Consuming gluten-free foods is invaluable for the health of people with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and celiac disease. This recipe book is not explicitly low-carb in nature, although there are many recipes included that are entirely appropriate for livin' la vida low-carb. The main thing you'll get is an education about why it is important to eat specific kinds of carbs, an explanation about why eating fat is good for you, and stocking your cabinets with the key ingredients necessary to make these delicious recipes. Bon appetit!

This book is one of the better cookbooks I've had the pleasure of using. I am on the SCD diet for Ulcerative Colitis and the recipes included are of the kind that you truly will use every day. Multiple uses and variations are detailed. For instance the recipe for crepes is not only indicated for breakfast or fancy desserts, but is used for sandwich wraps as well. The Muffin Mix Muffins are better than you could make 'out of the box'. My wife made pancakes for me to have at a Father's Day breakfast and gave samples to the other men. They raved about how good they were! I highly recommend this book to anyone on the SCD diet, and even to those who are NOT on the diet. Healthy and delicious, too. Who could ask for more?

This book opens another chapter what you CAN eat. It's very creative and fits the bill for gourmet. Great for anyone wanting some no grain/no sugar/no lactose/no bakers yeast alternatives. It had alot of recipes that I have not seen in the other Specific Carb Cookbooks. I hope the authors continue the creative path for this diet. We have our son on this diet for ASD and GI tract problems. The latest curveball is his diet has to be rotated due to food allergies. I would love to see these gals do more with other nut flours and eggless dishes, because I'm sure it would be creative.

The net information in this book is completely different from what's in their Quilter's Computer Companion. That's a good book too, but this is more updated and complete. I first heard of FTBY&M in 5th grade(1979) the whole school watched it in assembly. I loved it-all the stories and most of all the music. It touched me like nothing I had seen or heard before. The title song had our whole school singing for days! Years later i just happened to come across the book in our library, and WOW! all those memories came rushing back!! THEN, two years ago, i was given the soundtrack to FTBY&M, and I have not stopped singing since. The music and stories got me thru a serious illness and a horrible breakup= and when I one day have kids of my own, I will pass the legacy on!!!!!

I think it made me realize as a little girl that I could be anything I wanted to be. Now I am a lawyer and happily married and continue to feel free to be me!

Brings back fond memories

This book brings back fond memories of when I first heard these songs/stories back in grade school. I really think they are wonderful, motivating stories and songs that truly inspire children. I had to get it for my first baby so he can also experience the magic.

I LOVE IT!

I love Free to Be...You and Me probably because I am currently in the play. I actually have a preformance tonight! I love this book and its a Great Show!!! I actually never heard of it until I started the show. The great songs like "Glad to have a friend like you", "Something For Everyone", "Brothers and sisters", 'Free To be you and me" and "Free to be a family" are all spectacular!!!!!!!! Of course every song is great !!!!!!! The stories like "Boy meets Girl", "ladies First", "The Kingdom with no rules or Laws" are all such good stories especially "The Kingdom with no Rules or laws" thats my favortie because in the show i play the mother in that story. I love this book and play b/c its about kids and I'm a kid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I grew up in the late '70s playing the record of "Free to Be you and Me" over and over. My mom actually had to buy me a second copy because I lost the song book and couldn't live without it. I still sing "When We Grow Up" and "It's Allright To Cry" in the shower and to my nephews. Now I share the wisdom of Atalanta and William's Doll with the teenage mothers I teach. While it doesn't take a genius to figure out the songs on the record were recorded in the '70s, they are timeless treasures for all of our children. Buy this book and the CD for the important children in your life. You'll never be sorry!

Medium to hard-core music fans will love it. Casual fans will enjoy it. If you are into the music of the FREE, BAD COMPANY, and/or Paul Rodgers - you owe it to yourself to get this book. This is a great read, real life story, with loads of interesting details behind this moderately popular (but outstanding) rock band. This book is NOT a "kiss-up-hero-worshiping-everything-they-did-was-wonderful-critical-review" thing. Just the facts. Some ugly stuff. Some sad. Always interesting. I was amazed to discover how serious & determined these "kids" where to produce the music THEY wanted play. Find out what happened to Andy Fraser (bass). Who/What was SHARK? TOBY? Dates, Names, Places. It even includes a complete sessionography listing obscure unreleased sessions by Paul Rodgers band named PEACE (who?!). Even as a hard-core fan, I was completely unaware of 90% of the information I discovered in this book. Be forewarned that that this book will probably cost you more money down the road - as you scramble to complete your collection of FREE related music. Read the book. Listen to the music. You will not regret it.

great book for a great rock band make finally justice.

David Clayton has done a great job in assembling the stories of the individual players in the early days, how they came together, early struggles, eventual success etc. The reminicences of those who knew them and extracts from music magazines of the time make for interesting reading.

It is a sobering and sometimes depressing read about a band who should have been much larger, but instead were corrupted by eventual success after years of struggle and poverty.

Young up and coming bands would do well to read about, and try to avoid, the mistakes this band made regarding management, drugs, egos, song selection, and group parasites which all got in the way of the music.

worth the energy it takes to hold this big book up

Way back in the early eighties, intrigued by the components that made "All Right Now" such a great song, I went on a quest to find any and every recording of the late, great, lamented band, Free. I thought I was the only person on the planet who still listened to them. Thank God I was not. If you dig their music then you will want the book, and you'll love it. If you don't know about the music so well, then this book will definitely wet your appetite for it. They created their own oevre and instantly recognizable sound. The minimalism is addictive. Listen carefully. You will be moved.
