Morality PlaysReview Date: 2001-11-06
This book is of particular interest because the characters of Max and Moritz are the clear inspirations behind the Katzenjammer Kids, a newspaper comic strip that was popular throughout much of the 20th century. This book is considered a classic of this genre.

Dunnett ExplainedReview Date: 2007-05-25
'What brought us both here? A joyous adventure.'Review Date: 2007-02-20
For the devoted Dunnett reader, the Companion serves two purposes. Firstly, it provides a wealth of knowledge including translations of some of those non English phrases that made life difficult for some of us when tackling the books the first time around.
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, it keeps Lady Dunnett's erudition and sparkling humour alive for us. We see the application of her knowledge in the novels themselves but here, first hand, we experience the breadth and depth of knowledge and research that made both series so special.
Highly recommended.
Jennifer Cameron-Smith
Indispensable resource for Dunnett fansReview Date: 2002-04-25
That is where this book comes in. The novels provide tantalizing glimpses into a rich and complex world; the Companion allows the interested reader to pursue these glimpses into the labyrinthine world of Renaissance life and politics. The Companion (and what I say here applies to both Volumes I and II) is organized alphabetically and makes it possible for the reader who wants to do so to learn more about the multitude of historical figures who are so beautifully woven into the novels.
The Companion also provides the means for tracking down the quotations and other rhetorical devices that appear in the novels. The Companion carefully provides enough information to educate the reader, but not so much as to give away any of the plots of the novels. This is a delicate task, but is accomplished beautifully.
We all miss Dorothy Dunnett. May her novels long survive in print, and may the number of her fans continue to grow. Books like the Companion will help to make sure that both of these exhortations remain reality.

For bat-historians onlyReview Date: 2008-07-04
One thing to remember is that when this book was published in 1976 it was already 10 years out of date! The bat-history contained within stops at 1965 and that means no Man-Bat, no Ra's Al Ghul or anything else that has happened since 1966 onward.
The information that is included is VERY complete. There is just about EVERYTHING from Batman's golden age and part of the silver age with an alphabetical listing of all things Batman. Ever wonder what was in Batman and Robin's utility belts? Wonder no more, you can find out here (with pictures no less). Those wanting a more general overview of the caped crusader may be better off with Batman: The Ultimate Guide to the Dark Knight
Happy to see it back in printReview Date: 2007-06-29
about a year or two ago.I first read this book as a kid many, many years ago.
As a kid this book was a lot of fun to read. It still is. It covers more about Batman than any book out there. You will learn everything you would like to know about the Darknight Detective (From his beginings up until the 70's). I happened to see the book at my local bookstore last week. I was really happy to see that they have reprinted it for newer generations. I was tempted to buy myself a copy but I am happy with my used one. I think I will buy one for my nephew who is also a Batman fan.
So if you want to know about how Batman learn to throw the batarang, if you want to read about the two Batgirls and Batwoman. if you want to read about Alfred's time as a vilian who vexed Batman and Robin, if you want the low down on Bat-villians and Bat-friends...and if you just want to sit down, relax and enjoy reading the legend and lore of one of comic-doms greatest heroes then this book is for you.
DC has also reprinted the Superman and Wonderwoman encyclopedias (original copies which I also own). I recommend them also.
Fun stuff.
Buy and enjoy!

THE book to own for Robert De Niro fans!Review Date: 2005-03-03
When looking through this book I'm surprised at how many De Niro films haven't been released yet on dvd. With each of his movies, the author lists the cast, gives a plot summary, and tells how the critics and public reacted to each movie upon its initial release. There are hundreds of great photos from his movies (including a nice color section in the middle of the book) that fans will appreciate. I was already a major Robert De Niro fan before I bought this awesome book, but reading it helped me discover many more of his great movies. This book is an absolute must for any De Niro fan!

A brilliant modern-day Romeo and Juliet retelling.Review Date: 1997-04-20
A lengthy read (my United Kingdom Scholastic Point edition has 309 pages,) Cooney has given herself the length necessary to chart the peaks, troughs and complications of infatuation, genuine love, parental disapproval, "the sins of the fathers", the role of the media and political manipulation- all shown through the eyes of contemporary teenagers. Through all this, the pace remains consistently rapid; a real page- turner in every sense.
Multi- layered, complex and genuine: if only someone had given it to me before I read Romeo and Juliet for the first time! Comparisons to the recent Shakespearean film, though cinema-goers would certainly find this novel interesting either before or after viewing, are un-necessary, for Cooney's fiction is so powerful it doesn't need the gratuitous violence; her personalities act and work for themselves. Much to the author's credit, their weapons are words.
Teenage or adult? Male or Female? Studying/ Teaching Literature? Or just want a darn- good yarn? I say, "GO FOR IT!"

In some cases, the CD is difficult to find but order this book. Any musical theatre or cabaret singer owes it to him/herself to own this book.
Thank you John for your talent and taking the time to put what you were hearing in your head on paper. I, for one, am truly grateful.

This collection of essays which appeared in various publications cover mostly Tillinghast's aesthetic views of course design, rather than course strategy exclusively. He discusses setting, bringing character to individual holes based on peculiar, often natural features found near or on them, an the incorporation of historical spots into the mystique of a site (the most famous example associated with Tillinghast being the naming of Baltusrol).
While the focus is mostly on what makes a course both beautiful and functional, several articles are dedicated to construction of interesting golfing holes. Probably of greatest interest is his thinking on three shot holes, which can so often become dull in their design due to their length.
Aside from the articles themselves, numerous photos, drawings, and course maps are provided, which by themselves illuminate much of this classic course designer's thinking.
Tillinghast courses seem to make a near yearly appearance in major golf tournaments, ranging from the US Amature to the Open. Coming to know more about the architect can only bring greater appreciation for his courses and the game itself.
