This book is part of a series published by Dover Pictorial Archive Series. I contains a variety of pictures related to all types of food and drink and activities associated with eating and drinking. The pictures are especially good for a vintage touch to my collage work.

The good book with tons of images of food, people eating food, food sitting on tables, silverware and anything else to deal with the preparation to the consumption of food. Nice illustrations with nice variety. Serious to whimsical. Do keep in mind that there are highly stylized images from the 1800's as the title mentions, so no "modern" elements involved. Jim Harter has compiled and excellent sourcebook for food and dring illustrations. I found it very helpful when putting together an menu mock-up for a client. Great book.

Great Source of Color Images

This book is really useful to me for the color patterns in the fabric as well as the colors for period fashion. Also, hairstyles, hats, and even shoes are detailed enough to reference for my own illustrations.
The original journal, "Petit Courrier des Dames", was for the wealthy and fashionable woman. It was so popular in Paris that the English translated it for the fashionable Englishwomen who looked to France for the latest styles. The plates feature fashions for both wealthy women and men with captions that generally state the type of material used or some brief descriptive detail
(ie: "Rice-straw hat, jaconet dress, French cashmere shawl. [No. 835; September 25, 1831.]")
Pictures show costumes front and back views, standing and seated (mostly the women). There is 1 plate of young boys' costumes, 5 of Gentlemen, and the rest are of Ladies with 1 small collection of bonnets.
Each page offers two separate costumes.
There is a two page Introduction that explains the original French source material for Dover's edition, brief summary of characteristics of Men's, Children's and Women's fashion in the Romantic Era, and a compact glossary of materials and garments now with a loose English equivilent material.
The one tiny issue I have is that the edition I received sported a different cover than the pink one above. The interior content is the same.

This book is a great resource for the re-enactor or costumer. It can be considered primary documentation, as it is directly reprinted from the original. There's a very handy glossary in the front, in case you are not already familiar with mousselain-de-soie. I wish I could make every dress in the book--it's so hard to choose only one of these delightful gowns!

One of the wonderful things about the marketplace of the mind that is opened up by the Kindle and other new technologies is that it allows us to focus on the things that we choose, the things we know about, the things we want to learn about, the things that drive us, the things that we are passionate about. Which I suppose is a flowery way of saying that, when there are skills that we do not have, we can find others who have these skills, who share them with us in terrific little e-books like this one. Whether you want to learn how to have fun with graphics on your own Kindle or incorporate graphics into a Kindle document, Manuel Burgos is a great go-to guy to have on your side. I was so impressed with what I read in Graphics on the Kindle that I contacted Manuel and engaged him to help me with the cover design for the print-on-paper version of Beyond the Literary-Industrial Complex: How Authors and Publishers Are Using the Amazon Kindle and Other New Technologies (... to Unleash an Indie Movement of Readers and Writers), and he did a wonderful job. I have no doubt that I will go back to him when it is time for a print-on-paper version of How to Use the Amazon Kindle for Email & Other Cool Tricks: Read and Answer Email Anywhere, Anytime on the Amazing Amazon Kindle (The Complete User's Guide to the Amazing Amazon Kindle).

I've had this book for years and it's provided endless crafting ideas and clip art all this time. Sturdy and well bound just like any Dover edition, plus the images are a refreshing break from the cutsie and poorly drawn stuff you'd get from a program like Publisher. So easy to scan in since the book will lay flat w/o the binding cracking.
The only thing better than this would be an edition that comes with a CD with the images pre-scanned like some of the newer Dover clip art library collections.

If you are looking for unusual and striking Victorian clip art, then Jim Harter's picture archive book is it. I am an artist who uses mixed media in collage form and I can't get enough of these illustrations. There is everything from gothic Victorian scenes, to animals of every type and people using unusual objects.

This book is part of the Dover Pictorial Archive series. It states: "You may use the designs and illustrations for graphics and crafts applications, free and without special permission, provided that you include no more than ten in the same publication or project. For permission for additional use, please write to Permissions Department, Dover Publications, Inc., 31 East 2nd Street, Mineola, NY 11501. However, republication or reproduction of any illustration by any other graphic service, whether it be in a book or in any other design resource, is strictly prohibited."
The designs are very lyrical and romantic. There are knights in battle, maidens in distress, and classical gods like Neptune/Poseidon. Many of the illustrations have intricate, ornate borders that are as interesting as the main illustrations themselves. Jousting, sailing ships, mythical creatures - if you're looking for chivalrous or courtly drawings to inspire your own art, this is the book for you!

Wonderful illustrations from a work of romance, chivalry, and adventure, with classical mythology tossed in. I believe the only pieces not included from the six-volume original are the double-page title spread and the cover design featuring Una and the lion (used when the work-in-progress was being issued in parts a few cantos at a time, but also bound into some finished copies). "The Faerie Queene" is like an alternate version of the Arthurian Legends--the same type of stories, but not the same stories--with the admixture of other fantasy genres. These other elements mean that there is more nudity here than in illustrations of the actual Round Table stories, in case that matters to you. (When he married, Crane promised he'd no longer depict the female nude from life, but memory seems to have served him quite adequately for this labor of love!)

Though I can't improve upon the Midwest Book Review's overview of this book, I hope it helps prospective buyers to know that two sources think INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN ARCHITECTURE is terrific. Especially pleasing are (by my count) the 216 colored photographs, which include a number of close-ups of details of buildings. Also excellent are the many line drawings that are included to show structural detail. For those who want an in-depth exploration of a particular period or type of Indian architecture, there are other (far more expensive) books to choose from. For one who is interested in ALL Indian architecture, however, this is the book to buy.

The architectural heritage of the Indian subcontinent spans thousands of years and layers of diverse civilizations, beginning with the Indus Valley settlements and the early Vedic traditions. Impressively illustrated by Suparna Bhalla and Surat Kumar Manto, Introduction To Indian Architecture by architect Bindia Thapar (currently a visiting lecturer at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi) surveys the Hindu, Jain, Mughal (Islamic) and colonial (British), and post independence architectural styles. Showcased are monuments and/or buildings which represent the various individual schools of architecture singled out. Enhanced with maps, site plans , and other visual materials, Introduction To Indian Architecture is ideal for non-specialist general readers with an interest in Indian culture and history, students of multicultural architecture, as well as an essential addition to both academic and community library Architectural History reference collections.

This book has little to no text. However, with a very basic understanding of perspective (vanishing points, horizon line, boxes, spheres, etc.) you could create almost any one of the excersizes found in this book. There are incredible drawings of architectural elements all showing the perspective points, thus enabling the reader to copy relatively easily. This is a must for your reference library. If you're a complete beginner you will need to learn the basics first, but don't let that stop you from purchasing this reference work.

This book is great for the WPA expert or for the novice like myself. The body of work represented in the book opens your eyes to a subject matter that seems largely overlooked as serious art. Nevertheless, the volume of work produced during this period and the number of people reached by this work is truly amazing.

A wonderful book of Works Progress Administration posters. Only about two thousand of these survive from the millions printed and 280 are shown in color. They are not posters in the billboard size that everyone is familiar with but mostly small twenty-two by fourteen inches, quickly designed and printed by silkscreen.
Because they were easy and cheap to produce any government or civic department could use the medium, from the New York Foreign Trade Zone, the Seattle Children's Theatre to Stop the Spread of Syphilis, the design styles are just as varied from the whimsical to the stark graphic statement.
Author DeNoon has done his research and explains how the WPA poster division worked, other contributors provide more extra detail. The back of the book has a Portfolio of eight artists. The work of the WPA ended in 1943 and fifteen of their war posters are shown. If you want to follow the story have a look at 'Dig for Victory' by William Bird and Harry Rubenstein, this informative book has 150 posters designed for the Home Front.
Social historians and graphic artists will enjoy 'Posters of the WPA' and incidentally I would suggest that anyone interested in book design gets a copy. The book (designed by Henry Vizcara) is an excellent example of how a graphic visual book should look, the grid design, column widths, typography of the headlines, text and captions, use of white space, paper and printing all work together to produce this lovely book.

This book contains, as the title implies, seven complete Celtic alphabets, one of which is a reproduction of a lettering style used in the book of Kells, another a plain Celtic style calligraphy, and five other sets, decorated with spirals, birds, hounds and a variety of Celtic knots. Many letters are printed in double or triplicate, only on one side, so they can be cutout for stenciling etc. without fear of ruining the letter, or other letters.
