Mucha I love. His art is still very unique even today. It never seems old. This book is a good Dover book to see 40 plates by Mucha. They are presented in their original color. But I wouldn't recommend buying it because Dover has another book on Mucha which has 70 plates in original color. The 70 plates book is excellent and I recommend highly on getting it before it goes out of print.

The works presented in this book aren't too diverse. They are mostly tinted in either red or blue.

This book is a reproduction of Alphonse Mucha's second commissioned portfolio that was published in 1905. It's main use was and continues to be to help artists with composing the body within unusual and interesting shapes. The bulk of the drawings are, as would be expected with Mucha, of women in various dress or in the nude. There are also a few examples of younger children. I found this book to be useful for practice as copying the various figures has helped me gain a better grasp of anatomy. My only complaint would be that there are no studies of men in the plates.

Although some of these pictures are available online, it's convenient to have them gathered on paper... and on a cd at high resolution. The pictures are breath-taking, and they print very well. I'll use them in card making, and for decoupage. I'm well pleased with this dover book.

Overall nice pictures with a wide variety of photos.

My only complaint is that it doesn't have a really good "blue planet" type of photo of earth.

I'm a prop master for a local college and this book is invaluable for re-creating the correct look for any and all stage and film productions we do here.

I wanted to do a decorating project and needed some Hotel and Travel Stickers. This was an excellent resource for completing my project. It is too bad Hotels and Railways no longer do this.

This book has a nice selection of classic designs. Print quality is not amazing, but there is a CD and it's good value for the price.

Excellent collection of printable materials for everthing from documents and awards to gift items. Can be used for many purposes (think creatively).

This book is just what I was expecting...a lot of line drawings reflecting the older woodcut style designs from medieval times of many plants and flowers, mostly of an herbal category. The printing is on glossy paper on one side of the sheet only. Some of the plant varieties have more than one drawing, but each is different. The designs are mostly 2" x 1.5", some larger. I was very pleased with the book. I will be using the drawings to scan and create my own herb and food labels, as well as labels for gifts.

As usual, Carol B. Grafton has edited another excellent book; this one has a little under 300 black-and-white copies of medieval woodcuts (?), which sounds like a lot but doesn't satisfy an obsessive medievalomaniac. The book is also relatively colorless. But for most people, this book will probably be satisfactory in the area of variety.

This book is a reproduction of woodblock printed patterns. No instructions, wobbly diagrammes and little information. However, it's the sort of book I love. The pictures are exquisite, and I couldn't wait to get started on some of the lace. The first half of the book is reticella, the second filet. I sit and look at the drawings for hours, amazed at the complexity of one and the efficiency of the other. Again, it isn't a very big book, but for those of you interested in original, historic lace design, I highly recommend it.

For the price, this is worth buying a few copies of -- ever wondered how you get the incredible ornamentation for decorative inlay? This is it - about 50 pages of Black/Grey/White intricate scenes & decorative pieces. Nice.

I don't know an engraver anywhere who is not thankful for the non-copyright status of the Dover Book. ANY Dover book. With a copy machine you can shrink or enlarge any image to fit what ever your project is. How to get it from paper to your object? Try, in order, Acetone, Alcohol (as from a paint store, not rubbing [isopropanol]) alcohol as it has too much water in it, or toluene. use q-tips and put the ink side down, and you'll master it pretty fast.

Since I don't sketch well that's how I use it, others with greater skill use the books for ideas to set up the outlines or get ideas for sketches for engravings on firearms (I'm a member of the Firearms Engravers Guild of America), knives, scrimshaw, western engraving, glass, etc. I have a fair library of Dover Books and they have been invaluable to me and my customers -- Often designs emerge for which I have to employ an artist to sketch the offspring of multiple parents, all of whom come from the dover book series.

If just for delight at the amazing engravings, many of which take on imagined color from their shadings to reliving at the art from a former era, this book along with a few others, lift the soul, reduce the stress, and create awe and wonder in the viewer. And, heck, for the price they are cheap! AND it's legal to copy their designs!

This book is a mine of good ideas! Arm yourselves of coloured pencils to prove the colour coupling and give free rein to your imagination!!

This book contains tons of beautiful Chinese designs -- usually from ceramics or embroidery. Whenever I need a Chinese motif, I can find it here.

Like most Dover books, there's no real text to explain where the images came from or their significance. But for sheer volume of visual material, this book is a winner.

I would rank this book just behind Victorian Fashions and Costumes from Harper's Bazar, 1867-1898 (Dover Pictorial Archives) by Stella Blum and Full-Color Victorian Fashions : 1870-1893 by JoAnne Olian. If you have to be selected go with the first two before this one, but I still highly recommend this to round out the collection. More than 900 very detailed crisp drawing from the marvelous people at Dover Publishing again. They bring you inexpensive books that are a wealth of information, writers of period romance just cannot live without.

Every student of 19th-century fashion needs to have six books from Dover Publications in his or her library:

- Victorian Fashions and Costumes from 'Harper's Bazar', Stella Blum;
- Victorian and Edwardian Fashions from La Mode Illustree, Joanne Olian;
- Wedding Fashions 1860-1912, Joanne Olian;
- Victorian and Edwardian Fashion: A Photographic Survey, Alison Gernsheim;
- English Women's Clothing in the Nineteenth Century, C. Willett Cunnington;
- and this book.

Carol Grafton's book is really more of an assemblage of pictures for illustrators than anything else, but what pictures! Over 900 B&W drawings lovingly display every little detail of the elaborate costumes of the Victorian and early Edwardian eras from the mid-1850's to 1903. This book doesn't have much in the way of text so it's not as comprehensive a research resource as some of the others that I've mentioned, but as an auxiliary resource to the other books on the above list, it's perfect.

Bought this book to help with tattoo ideas and concepts. Great art work and clear pictures.

The images are black-and-white. These particular designs tend to have a lot of interweaving patterns vaguely like Keltic knotwork but more irregular and "organic looking". There was plenty of detail to work with, and several formats are included. I used the TIFFs and converted to my own GIFs so that I could make the white parts transparent; this was quick and easy to do. I've had a hard time finding clip art suitable for my website so I am glad to have found several of the Dover clipart books.
