This book is dedicated to those who already know the first steps of collage works: what materials to use, what glue to paste with, what elements to include... but it gives an amazing amount of ideas and new approaches that are awesome. You can't miss this publication if you are collage-prone. It's a delight for the eye and helps you understand how artists use their skills and imagination. Take a look!... Am I wrong?

I've had my share of disappointments with collage books. So much of the rubber stamping craft craze has moved into what we call "Collage".
I was afraid this book would be hyping rubber stamp and craft company
products. Never have I been so WRONG!

This book is by and for artists who are working on original ideas. The "how to's" are not for cookie cutter projects but informative in recipes (wheat paste glue) and techniques. All work in this book is by serious,
original artists.

This book has me planning two days off to play around with some of my own ideas using the techniques of application of paint and materials in this book.

You won't be sorry, buy the book!

I like this book, along with Creative Collage Techniques by Nita Leland. As a beginner, I needed something that would give me the information I needed and to spark my creative juices.

This book includes a Materials and Ingredients list for each project and Recipes throughout. There was cornstarch paste recipe, which may be something I try at a later date, but I want to keep it simple for now. The book has great photographs and text that show the steps needed to complete the project. It also includes a gallery of collage art by various artists. Collage Art covers paper, fabric, found object collage and collagraphy "the process of making a print from a collage plate".

A very nice book to add to your collection.

I have long been interested in collage and recently decided to try my hand at it. To facilitate this, I got several books on the subject. This was one of the nicest and most complete.

Atkinson's beautiful book was a great help. I liked the way collage artists showed, step by step, how they created their collages. The photgraphy of the pieces was excellent, making it a very visually appealing book.

My only disappointment was that the book did not cover what materials to use, what glue to paste with, what different kinds of papers are available, and preservation of the finished work. This is not the fault of the author....she never claimed that the book was a beginner's guide.

Overall, this was a great resource book.

I rate this book a 4-star only because it's several year old. The inspiration here is terrific. I question some of the "how to's" only because there are other methods available now(no need to make your own glue). Acrylic medium is the best adhesive available for collage art. It touches on fabric collage as well. The gallery of work is wonderful. You cannot (and should not) duplicate, but your are given enough inspiration to create your own work. I would say this book is big on "Look what you could do" and little light on the "How to". Still . . . a good keeper. Excellent and plentiful full-color photos.

This Dover Clipart Book on Ancient Mexico has the classic small imagery useful for designing in a variety of art media. Refer to these for quick designs, particularly in print making, stamp making, borders, and so much more. This book compliments the Dover Book - Ancient Mexican Designs, which has the more complex imagery taken from ancient wall art and carved stonework. Both provide cultural imagery that inspire.

A remarkable Precolumbian art book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-05
This is a remarkable collection of images taken from ancient Mexican stamps. These stamps were usually made from fired clay; the author believes they were mainly used to stamp designs on pottery. My guess is that's not always true, as I've seen a lot of Precolumbian Mexican pots, and not many have that type of decoration. The author mentions that the stamps were also used to make temporary tattoos, and to stamp designs on fabric and paper. It would be interesting to know what the current archaeological thinking is on the uses of these stamps.

Butterflies were a popular motif in the Precolumbian Valley of Mexico. It's interesting to note that the Nahuatl (Aztec) word for butterfly is "paplotl", intriguingly similar to the French "papillon". Owls, another popular motif, were tecolotl, the source of the Mexican Spanish word tecolote.

The stamps illustrated are primarily from the Valley of Mexico, with a few from Vera Cruz and other localities. This edition is a reprint of the 1947 book. Dover currently sells Design Motifs of Ancient Mexico, a book and CD collection, but the book appears to be a 48 page abridgement of the original. My advice is, buy the book first, then buy the CD if you want to actually use the designs. The book is the usual high-quality Dover product -- my copy is the 1953 reprint, and it's still in fine shape 50-some years later. Highly recommended.

Happy reading--

BEST OVERALL Art Nouveau Floral Borders & Ornaments Collection Book for Artists

Review Date: 2008-02-15
I have about two dozen books specifically purporting to be Art Nouveau 'collections', and NOT ONE, or even THREE COMBINED, come close to capturing what THIS book offers, albeit in the "floral" patterns category... To artists looking for a definitive 'starter' source, in the art of the period, for repurposing in art, crafts and decor (ie: wallpaper, fabric, pottery, woodcarving, etc.), pick up a copy of this book and forget the rest! I was able to find not only what I needed for several initial projects, but was inspired to START more new projects based on the sparkling ideas inspired by this plethora of lush color images. Only wished a CD-ROM was available to accompany this book with hi-res digital images, as it would have made importing images to my computer (for re-sizing, tiling, color changes, etc.) much easier than hand-scanning... Only my collection of (specifically) Alphonse Mucha art books surpasses the value of "Art Nouveau Floral Patterns & Stencil Designs", and that is only because I have not YET found a like compilation of M. P. Verneuil 'figure' designs.

This book exceeded my hopes. It had many more images in full color than I expected for such a cheap book. I have seen other books by Verneuil and they were half as nice and mostly black and white. I think anyone into decorating, drawing, and painting will like this book. It will inspire you to create art nouveau lines and flowers on your own work.

I thought the artwork in this book was stunning, and the reproduction quality and colors were lovely. I did have one major problem with the book, two of the main designs on the cover (topmost horizontal design and the center horizontal design) are NOT IN THE BOOK! These are two of the main patterns I planned to use from the book, and now if I want to, I need to get them from the cover, where they are covered by text. I found this to be unacceptable! Please keep this fact in mind if the cover is what won you over.

A truly beautiful book, many of the plates are full page and in full color. His nudes and semi-nudes are entirely captivating with exquisite attention to detail. The remainder of the plates are tints and depict various items in art nouveau style (jewelry, silverware, china, etc.). There are also a few pages containing color borders and backgrounds. The copyright in this book is unusual for Dover Publications, as it grants no explicit free-use of the images contained within it.

This is one of the books of Mucha; how can I complain? His distinctive art style, that nearly defined all of the known conception of Art Neuveau(curse my bad spelling), is on full display. The flowing designs of Mucha have stood the test of time. His art is loved by art-traditionalists and my punk-music loving buddies and proves true art is loved by all.

This is a reproduction of Mucha's portfolio "Documents Decoratifs" which is a lovely selection of Mucha's work. It includes not only many nude women and flowers (which one would expect) but also designs for furniture, silverware and lots of jewellery. If your looking for a source of information on Mucha this is not it but if you just want to gaze lovingly at a wide selection of his work you will adore this book.

This is an excellent source of design ideas. I have recently started working in polymer clay and hope to start also with metal clay, so I was casting about for ideas and came across this book and CD of Celtic art motifs.

I am very fond of the basic knotted designs of the Halstadt culture which tends to be very curvilinear geometric, and over half of the designs in this book are Halstadt in style (as opposed to the later La Tène period with designs that incorporate stylized animals into the Celtic knot motif. For those who prefer the latter, check Celtic Designs in the same collection.)

The CD was easily installed on my computer, easy to open and navigate. It took me a little time to refamiliarize myself with the clip art style. I haven't used it since it came on floppy disks! This was very much easier to do.

This is a wonderful addition to any collection of Celtic Art.It is a book of Celtic Design motifs with an accompaning CD-ROM. There are 223 designs in the book and on the disc.It is a Clip Art book and gives permission for freedom of use.The designs are presented on 48, 8 1/2" X 11" pages;and all are B&W.The sizes vary from about 2"X 2" to about 5" X 6".All the designs are very simple when compared to the great complexity that is usually found in any book of Celtic motifs. They are all line drawings as represented in the photograph on the cover which,by the way, indicates the complexity found in the collection.
In the collection you will find borders, elaborate spirals, weaves, birds, beasts, mermaids, knots wreaths and all sorts of fanciful creatures. However, unlike many books on Celtic Art ,there are no Alphabets. Like I said, the motifs are simple, but a great book to get started with using or understanding this art form.
Also there is absolutely no text in the book,no instructions on how to construct this artwork and no history or background whatsoever on this art.
Therefore don't expect from this book anything but what it is;a Clip Art book and CD-ROM of 223 motifs. If you are looking for more, there are many other books available such as those excellent ones by George Bain.

The language is a bit weird, like that of the 18th or 19th century European travellers. The information is sufficient but is not as academic as one would expect, if you are looking for a scholarly source.
However, the visual part (pictures, figures) is very extensive and helpful.

This is the most comprehensive collection of beautiful designs for gates, rails, fences, walls, pillars etc. From my personal opinion, there are some designs within the book that might be even more beautiful than the ones shown on the front cover. The various styles range from quite simple to very complex (flowery type). With over 400 designs, one is sure to find a few that matches his or her own tastes. A great book for homeowners and others. Probably some of these designs could even be used in graphics and other works apart from architecture.

A delightful little book givint the reader great insight into Victorian architecture. Providing beutiful vision usingoriginal terminology that gives one the authentic flavor. Using Parlor instead of living room. Showing a sewing room and other such features. Peticularly interesting in the provision and in some others lack of provision of plumbing. Some have bathrooms and some don't.

An excellant book for the lover of architecture or of the Victorian period.

However, there is one awful drawback. And it is most dreadful. Some houses are not accompanied with floor plans. Examples being the beutiful house on page four. The Farragut clubhouse on page thirteen. The moderate cottage on page thirty one and the houses following to page thirty eight. While others have only one or two floors plans provided.

This could use a sequal to correct this defect and provide additional buildings for reader's enjoyment.

Here is an amazing collection of victorial architectural buildings from the 1800s taken mostly from the New York Tri-State area. The full color three dimensional views given by these plates allow one to experience a sense of the real thing as it had been. The floor plans with scale dimensions can even help to wonders to the memory in understanding these magnificent works. It is also quite detailed and useful for someone who may even wish to reproduce any of these buildings! Even if you don't have any intention of reproducing an entire victorian building, there are certain styles that you can copy for your own home or farmhouse etc. This book gets my full recommendation.

"Victorian House Designs in Authentic Full Color," edited by Blanche Cirker, is a visually delightful tribute to a memorable era in home architecture. This volume reprints plates from "Scientific American--Architects and Builders Edition," originally appearing from 1885 to 1894.

The book contains floor plans and elevations of both stand-alone houses and connected homes. If you love the fanciful vocabulary of Victorian architecture, you will find all of your favorite features on display here: eyebrow dormers, circular towers, covered piazzas, cantilevered balconies, complex roof lines, clustered fireplaces, Palladian windows, and much, much more.

The only drawback to the book is that some house elevations are not accompanied by floor plans; a few others are only accompanied by the plan of a single floor. But overall, this is a richly detailed celebration of some truly beautiful homes. If you are a student of Victorian home architecture, this book is a must-have.

This wonderful book features page after page, in FULL COLOR excellent, detailed drawings of these marvelous, period residences! And includes the floor plan of the houses.

Frankly I found the book a pure delight! Many of the houses are featured in a natural setting with a lawn and trees,

I would have preferred people not to be featured in the pictures, but that is just a personal preference..

The small figures are well done and are dressed in period clothing.

I greatly enjoyed this book. It is the kind of picture book that I will be looking at over and over.

We ordered this book to give us ideas for building our own house in the grand old Victorian style. There are not instructions in this book, but it offers good illustrations, as well as floor plans for most of the houses pictured. Because the drawings are clear, they give a good idea of how some of the building was done, so it's possible to replicate them. We found it very helpful. The book is not technical, so it's entertaining for the average person to look at. The pictures are charming and enjoyable to browse through. The houses pictured are real, working houses that were built years ago. Through the floor plans, you also get an idea of the Victorian lifestyle. It really is a wonderful book to add to your library. It is a soft cover book

What I love about the 6 Traits is the accessibility across the grade levels. My initial experiences with 6 Traits was in the elementary school and I currently teach 8th grade. I have not found this resource to be helpful with older writers as most of the language is for young writers. With some of my students writing at the high school, even college level, it seems inappropriate. I use picture books for inspiration, but the checklists are too young. I will continue to collect 6 Traits materials as I found it is the best way to teach writing effectively.

The quality of the art in this collection is great, however the majority of the items are animal based. There are few plain geometric patterns and nothing usable as borders, etc. There is another Dover collection that specifically includes Celtic borders. Most of Dover's collections give you a fairly wide selection, but this one is stuck on a theme and is also a bit thin. Only 96 designs! If you are looking for animal motifs in your Celtic clipart, this is the collection for you! If you are looking for anything else, look elsewhere.

About 75% of the designs are animals, ranging from peacocks, a seahorse, to a duck, otter, pelican and fish; but there are also a few spirals, knotwork and key patterns. I have done a few tattoos and created a number of web graphics with the collection, and gotten alot of enjoyment and inspiration from them, and reccomend it to anyone looking for intricate Celtic art (especially zoomorphic desigs), that they can use freely, without worry of Copyright (because there is none, other than a limit on the # of images per publication).

Exquisite and useful!

I love the fact that you can resize the designs. I've used several as the basis of embroidery patterns on cloaks and tunics. They would be great for everything from newsletters to tattoo designs. From borders to circles to neckpieces to animals, this is a great reference that you will use over and over.
