Excellent sourcebook

This is a very good book, made with the traditional Dover Publication quality found in other books in their series that feature pictorials as diverse in subject matter as Art Noveau and Japanese Designs. As stated in the book, it is a permanent book produced with the quality standards used for the best books including pages bound in signatures that open flat for reference without the pages coming out. This is important since each page has three or four details taken from designs from pre-Columbian Ecuador and if you are copying them you will need the pages open and flat for an extended period of time. The designs are black and white illustrations and range is subject matter from splayed figures, people, many different animals including mammals, birds, reptiles and fish, plants and abstact creations, just to name a few. Each illustration is flat and enlarged showing the detail next to the smaller whorl or bead. The designs are taken from the private collection of the author. The author, Frederick w. Shaffer, used his collection of spindle whorls or weights and decorative beads that date back from 500 to 1500 A.D. In the introduction their is a brief explanation of these onjects and their use and how he aquired them in 1959. Although this is not a historical book per se it does represent the art work of the craftsmen of ancient Ecuador so it does have some historical significance. It is a remarkable collection of designs or motiffs that are valuable for people invloved in the visual arts. As a sourcebook for people in advertising, textiles or woodwork these designs may be used at will, with the permission of the author, to enlarge, reduce, alter, etc. for your convenience. If you are creative these designs can also be a stimulas for your own designs influenced by the ancient artists of Ecuador. Crafts people in jewelry, metalcraft or leather will find these designs very helpful. An interesting feature is the similarities in these designs and other objects collected from vastly different geographical locations in pre-Columbian America. The book is similar to the(2) books of ancient designs of Mexico by Jorge Enciso.

Over 200 authentic motifs from Java, Bali, Irian Jaya, and etc., including Batik, Ikat, Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet), Topeng (masks) designs. Illustrations are all black and white, copyright-free. Each motif has a short description, such as "Rakshasa head gold earring motif, Java, 13th- 16th centuries." Usually this descriptions are quite short, just tells you where or what, still it's informative enough to show you the name of familiar motifs.

Dover never disappoints! Quality images scanned at good resolutions and the most common file types. The book includes both colour and b/w images of all kinds of insects printed on both sides of the page (so if you're looking for ready to cut decoupage materials you'll have to print out the items you want yourself.) The critters aren't indentified individually but are organized by scientific orders. Jime Harter's collections are full of marvelous images that drive one mad trying to figure out all the uses for them.

Japanese Stencil Designs CD-ROM and Book (Dover Electronic Clip-Art). I purchased this with the hope of its contents providing me with illustrations and patterns I could utilize in my art practice, specifically screen printing. It exceeded my expectations wonderfully. There are numerous large excellent quality bird and floral images and patterns that will serve me for years to come. I thoroughly recommend this to anyone searching for a similar resource.

Endless Creative Possibilities!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-02
This is an inexpensive two-in-one deal, and the creative possibilities are virtually limitless!

First, it's a book with 37 different kaleidoscope designs to be colored. The unique and fun designs include animals, plants, people, activities, icons, and many more. Each design has a title that gives a clue as to what it is (i.e., "Play Ball" for a design made up of baseball players and equipment), which comes in handy when trying to figure out what you're looking at. Although there are a couple of pretty basic designs, for the most part they are rather intricate. Younger kids might do better creating their own designs rather than trying to color the ones provided.

The book also gives instructions on how to create kaleidoscope designs. Little ones will need help (use of an X-Acto knife is involved), but the designs will be all theirs. The instructions are a little involved, but not too bad. Three "window" wedge templates are included to cut out and use as guides, but other materials are also needed. Some of these might not be everyday household items (i.e., carbon paper, protractor), but they are inexpensive and relatively easy to find.

The designs are printed back-to-back, but the paper is relatively heavy, so pens and markers can generally be used without bleeding through and ruining the design on the next page.

If you're highly creative or just want a good way to pass the time, I recommend this book.

Fanciful wit and dark humor make this book a masterpiece.

Machinery and Mechanical Devices, isn't just a clip-art book. This sixty-page presentation of copyright free illustrations from the 1800's is a humorous personal expression of the wonderment and fear associated with functionally obscure mechanical devices. Unlike other clip-art books which present the material as individual objects separated by a lot of white space, this book is brought to much higher levels of interest. The way Rowe does this is by creating collages of illustrations on each page - not simply displaying them piece-by-piece. He even goes so far as to make up names for many of his concoctions, and adds other details such as twinkling stars and abstract patterns. The result is a highly entertaining picture book useful not only for the art it displays, but also as a catalog of visual and humorous ideas. Enjoy!

There are lots of bold black/white designs in this book. The designs are heavy on animals, griffins, fleur-de-lis, and heraldic motifs, but all are nice. Some designs are very simple and bold, and others have lots of detail. My favorites are the repeat designs.
