OK, I admit I didn't expect all that much from this book at first; I'd already concluded I was interested in investing blue and balancing the tide of conservative investors (with whom I disagree profoundly). To my surprise, I learned a lot from reading this, and found it a reasonably pleasant read. I (PhD/MBA, active investor in just about everything for decades) am inherently skeptical of past-performance analyses by those with something to sell, but they make a far better than usual try of it. I'm still a little cautious about the extent to which the choice of time period drove the financial performance conclusions (they address portfolio monte carlos but didn't fully address the temporal selection side, to my thinking). But, as they point out, returns are only one element of the issue. There was a long, somewhat plausible, but inherently unproveable, interpretation of the tie between certain allegedly blue behaviors and financial results that one will have to make one's own judgement on. What I found most worthwhile was the discussion of the mechanisms and organizations of both the blue and red activist communities, how they have evolved, and what we (any of us) can do. It was a very worthwhile read. I don't think it will convert any skeptics or conservatives, but if you are already leaning "blue" it may be a pretty important book to consider.

After hearing about this book for several years, my husband and I decided to check it out and see what we thought. We listened to the audio book and were very impressed by the stories that were used to illustrate different virtues. While much of the anthology was intended for very young children, there were also selections that people of any age could enjoy. The many stories gave examples of: Hard Work; Compassion; Honesty; Friendship; Loyalty; Persistence; Courage; Faith; Self-Discipline and Responsibility.
The tape had many excellent narrators, but it was extremely entertaining to hear Tom Selleck, Charleston Heston, and Michael York do readings of various pieces of literature.
We started with the idea of just listening to a tape or two, but enjoyed it so much we did the entire book. I really think that this would be a loving gift to give to a young family!

An inspiring take on what it means to be "of service."

"Born to Serve" will really speak to anyone who feels that there must be something more to life than just showing up every day. I've always had a nagging feeling, however happy or sad I am, that there must be a bigger purpose for my life. Well, Susan Trout's book inspired me to trust that there is something really awesome to show up and work for. The author is the Executive Director of the Institute for the Advancement of Service in Alexandria, Virginia, which was founded in 1980 as a non-profit educational and spiritual organization engaged in training, teaching and research. Susan Trout's book book draws on her 25 years as a teacher and Director of IAS, and the author's own experience of walking her path towards wholeness in this life. The book is deeply spiritual, echoing the best in many spiritual traditions, At the same time, it is very practical about how you can develop your own plan of action for "soul evolution" and how you can carry it through. I want to emphasize this because the author has pulled off a great feat by dealing with deep spiritual issues in a readable, easy manner and by offering a systematic guide (not just tips and tricks) to anyone who feels the soul's call to learn and grow. Susan Trout's fundamental idea is that we are here in this life to have the opportunity to learn from our experiences and grow into whole human beings. She says that we can become whole through service. "Yes, but...", you might say, "I try to do good now and that hasn't made life easier." Well, I've news for you. "Being of service," according to Susan Trout, doesn't mean neglecting yourself; in fact, she says, if you can't look after yourself, you can't serve others. So,the first thing to do is to get really serious about loving and caring for yourself. Then you'll really be able to get serious about serving others with compassion and love. Commonsense, really; but it was just the right message for me because, as I learned from the author, I was at the "wounded healer " stage of my evolution; I had never managed to get the balance right between serving others and taking good care of myself. But "Born to Serve" didn't stop there; it went on to show me how to get over this and move on to the next stage of my growth which is "Healing the Healer." The book sets out 7 stages of the evolution of the soul. In the first 4 stages, we relate very much to the outside world and gain much life-experience from them. In the later stages, we relate more to our inner world and we work on getting rid of all the obstacles that prevent us from "being of service" purely from being who we are as whole human beings. Susan Trout shows how our personalities often put up all sorts of resistances and obstacles, consciously and unconsciously, to allowing ourselves to grow and align our personalities with our True Selves. I found the part of the book where she talks about the tools we can use to do inner work on ourselves very helpful. She also makes it clear that we all have a choice in this life; some of us will choose to go on learning all our lives, others will decide that enough's enough. And that's ok, because we can always pick up where we left off in the next life. The author acknowledges the richness that she draws on in the wisdom of various spiritual traditions and from the psychosynthesis school of psychology. Indeed, you might think the book deals with a lot of heavy stuff. And it does, but the author brings all this all alive in her writing in a light and deceptively simple manner. She shares many personal stories with us. And yes, she insists that personal choice, intention, effort, will and certain skills are needed to learn and grow, but she also promises that when we are aligned with our True Selves, the Beloved, Divine Source, God, or whatever words you want to use, life becomes deeply sweet and joyful. This book makes an indispensable companion for all those of us who are searching to live like our True Selves in this life.

This book is one of the most profound healing tools that I have encountered on my spiritual journey. For the first time in my life, situations, attitudes, and experiences make sense. Further, I have begun to understand, appreciate and honor the DIVINITY in the evolution of my soul and its' role in being of service. The meaning of service shifted into a "being state" from a "doing state." This book is a MUST read for any on a "conscious" spiritual path.

I talked with McKay once, back in 1983 or so. I wish I'd known he was going to write this book, I'd have paid more attention to him.
This is easy to read, easy to understand and very deep. McKay takes the reader into an exploration of what integrity and honesty really mean, why we vary from them and what it really takes for an organization to be honest. Reading the book has helped change the way I act and think.
If you really want more integrity in yourself and those about you, reading this book will give you the tools you need.

Perhaps you have your own Brady Brady at home. I know I have a couple. Like a lot of boys, Brady Brady loves hockey. He loves hockey so much that he tends to get a little distracted. In fact, his family got so used to calling him- Brady, Brady- that his name just became Brady Brady.
In this instalment of the Brady Brady series, Brady Brady decides that he's going to make the greatest outdoor rink ever in his backyard. It's a lot of hard work. Be sure to read the book to see if his efforts pay off.
I got the books of the Brady Brady series primarily to read to my grandson. I wanted to encourage a love of reading early in his life and I remember how difficult it was to find books that would keep his uncle's attention at that young age. The Brady Brady series was a perfect fit. We had a great time reading Brady Brady and the Great Rink together. However, I knew we had a real winner when Uncle and Nephew started to read together.

I love all of these books they all have a great message and I love the fact there is a set of books for boys in hockey that they can learn good sportsmanship, being a great teammate, friend, all with a little twist with a good moral ending. I love these books and the picutres are outstanding. There is even one about a girl who plays hockey and how she overcomes the fear of being the only girl on the team. Buy all these books you will not be sorry.

After reading this book I realized this is something that I want to keep on my bookcase for easy reference. The author reflects on his family in Texas and uses their lives as references to the events of the 20th century... sort of like a Grapes of Wrath. This is probably one of those books that is in the top 10 least known about that need to be read.

I have used it as a text for raising my children since. He gives many interesting examples from his own experiences. The greatest thing about this book is that the author focuses on principles of morality, not on rules. He gives us guidelines for teaching our children to make their own choices using reasoning, not rules. A brimming oasis in the moral desert of modern society. Thank you Dr. Scoresby!

Once again, the thought that the power behind the throne ruled the biggest empire on Earth is proven. Since the beginning of the Bush administration, his government have being plagued with suspicious acusations of corruption, mismanagment, manipulation of information and public opinion, cuts in taxes, public programs and expenses and increising of military expenses with suspicious objectives but with clear consequences in a near future.
Mr. Laurent revealed the nexus between the Bush family and the oil business and how his family have being supported for generations by the republican extremists to gain control of the government and how they paid then back once instaled at White House. The list of the supporters goes from president of "prestigious" foundations, religious leaders, president of oil companies to the owners of the military industrial companies paid back with billionary contracts, loans, credits or strategic positions inside the administration to rule the destiny of United States and the rest of the world. Dangerous? Perhaps. Consequences? Many, a lot not even seeing, Irak as an example is enough to think about.

This book should be read, at least once, by every man, woman and child in America who want to acquire some background information on the influences that are currently shaping the policies of the US Government (under George W. Bush's watch) and thus the perception of America throughout the world. Eric Laurent's book is a fascinating read, and one that is always backed up with easily checkable facts for further investigation, on all the individuals who influence the Bush political machine and therefore the ultimate destiny of America. All the reader needs to do is join up the dots of the activities of Richard Mellon Scaife's Heritage Foundation, with the soundbites and reports from the Coors Foundation, Bradley Foundation, Hoover Institute, Cato Institute and the American Enterprise Institute, to realise they are all singing of the same 'hymn sheet'. And singing in one voice. And singing very, very loudley. Once the dots of the 'hymn sheet' have all been joined together, the reader, through Laurent's indepth research and precise analysis, is able to hear the main vocalists in the 'chior'; Elliot Abrams, Douglas Feith, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney. And these 'chiorboys' do not sing with the voice of angels, no matter what Billy Graham's Christian faith would have the listner believe. If you are a Patriot, read this book as a matter of urgency, whether you intend to vote for Bush or not.

This book engages and informs. It reminds us that we are in charge of where the money goes when we consider how we spend and invest it, and of course who we vote for, the policy we support and how it's all connected. In this day and age when modern media can speak to economic issues and ignore that war and environmental degradation are among the issues for our presidential candidates let alone ethical challenges, it is refreshing to read a well documented step into creating sustainable habits so close to the pocket. Read it and follow-up.
