Dr. Jonsen is one the nation's germinal thinkers in the field of bioethics. Through his experience and associations at several of the renowned medical academic institutions in this coutnry he sets forth a clear systematic approach to problems in bioethics. This includes a review of his "4-box" method for approaching ethical problems and then reviews basic ethical principles as well as legal definitions. His approach to clincal dilemmas provides a refreshing analytical process for dilineating issues and conflicts.

This is an excellent resource for those in medical settings.

The authors suggest another method of evaluating ethical dilemmas. They suggest one examine the situation in light of medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual features. Because the approach is clinical, rather than theoretical, some of the medical details presented are somewhat technical. This is a book for those working in a medical setting or otherwise engaged with medical ethics. I read the book based on the recommendation of a bioethics lecturer. It was further recommended recently by the Director of the Program in Medical Ethics for University of California, Irvine. --Mary Kay Buike, MSW, ACSW; Oncology Social Worker and member of a hospital Bioethics Committee

This book is awesome! It should have been titled "The Training Manual" I've bought several books on the subject of personal coaching, and I have to admit, I wish I had found this one first. Everything is outlined in an easy to read and interesting format. This book is actually the only coaching manual one would need. I purchased this book along with "The Life Coaching Handbook" and the two totally compliment one another. This author really touches every aspect of 'Personal Coaching' without all the unneccessary "fluff" that most manuals give you. This author is definately in touch with the practice of Professional Coaching.

Clear, practical, excellent - made a real difference to me

This book is recommended by Stephen Covey - I'm not surprised. It's written in a simple style, yet covers both basic and advanced coaching skills. Things like beliefs and values of a coach, postures on a conversation, as well as the foundation skills such as deep listening and purpose based questioning. I particularly like the simple exercises you can do in everyday life - they really helped me to dramatically improve my coaching ability and confidence.

I think this book is great!

Thank you Julie for writing such a valuable and insightful book. This is super solid grounding for a prospective coach. It is written out of obvious expertise and with compassion and respect for coach and coachee.

The book is very well organized and includes numerous tips and exercises. An added bonus is the book's attractive format and art.

My only criticism (very minor) is reserved for the proofreader. A few typos and ommissions crept into the text, however they don't interfere with the smooth read and the valuable subject matter. Very highly recommended.

I purchased this book, obviously, for a class, and I thought it was actually interesting. I had many texts that literally put me to sleep, but this one is different. It makes you think about the penal system in this country, and introduces issues to make you think about things other than locking up the bad guys and throwing away the key. My husband even wanted to read it when I finished my class!!! Recommend highly!!!!

The first college textbook I actually enjoyed reading!

Wow! What a great and interesting textbook. I think this is the first time I've actually been "current" in the reading required for a college course. I'd like to add that the study guide that you can purchase to accompany this textbook is excellent as well. I'd recommend a course that uses this book to anyone with an interest in criminal justice or corrections.

I am using this textbook in a class and it is a whopper. Wonderful pictures, easy to read, clear colors and understandable. I've been working in prisons for 5 years and this book makes a lot of sense. You ought to read their sections on women in prison and on probation. I loved the parts on geriatric prisoners (old cons) and the death penalty. And it is easy to read. More!

Collaborative Spunk: The Feisty Guide for Reviving People and Our Planet is an ideal guide for people like me, who care deeply about the state of our planet. I have often felt frustrated because it seems like the efforts of one individual cannot be enough to reverse the downward ecological, economic, and socio-political spiral in which we've been trapped. This book, by combining solid scientific principles with collaboration on a grassroots level, provides us with a way forward that can work. I strongly recommend it to anyone who truly wants to 'make a difference'.

This is the best book about commitment in the workplace so far as I am concerned. Readers may find the style of writing, contents and structure so clear and straightforward.

If you STILL recognise employees' commitment to their organisation is composed of only one dimension based upon "affection" or "identification", probably you're wrong. And if you find your coworkers and supervisors may seem committed to the organisation, their behaviours lead to various results, not simply determined as a good citizen's.

This book will give you a key to solve what we think about "complexed" commitment. Essential for MBA students, researchers and HR managers. Good work, in a word.

A Complete book about organizational commitment.

A Gem! If you hear the phrase "what goes around, comes around" and want to understand in detail just how this cosmic process works, read this book.

It is written in simple language. Nevertheless, it is the type of book where you read a sentence and have to stop for twenty minutes to assimilate it's meaning. No fluff here. It is that simple and yet that profound. Everytime you read it again, its as if you peel off more and more layers and get closer and closer to the truth of things. A book where you are constantly stopping and saying to yourself,"Gosh, I think I did know that once!" as you embark on a process of rediscovering yourself and all the universal laws and making sense of it. After reading this book, you will feel as if you really do have an important role to play in the universe. You will understand that your every thought, word and deed count. That nothing can be truly hidden and that there are two types of justice: the human and the divine. It will teach you that we all have a responsibilities here to each other. That no wrong deed ever goes unpunished and than no good deed (sacrifice)is made without its reward to the giver.

If you yearn to understand what life is about, this book will help you greatly. In fact, you may never need another.

I have read about 35-40 books written from the conferences given by Master Omraam. In my opinion, there is no other author that can explain life like he does. His (this) philosophy goes to the core of everything in a very simple manner. He explains the essential, the real aspects of our lives here on earth during, before, and after... Life is a unique opportunity given to us to evolve, to improve ourselves and to become familiar with both the physical and invisible worlds. Talking about this subject to others is difficult because this "pure" knowledge often shakes the "dark" within ...so, I hear a lot of "what is this ...spirituality, anyway" But eh, remember Someone 2000 years ago, and how He was treated...and He was right. DO IT !

Walter Trobisch was a master of the heart and mind. His gentleness, patience, and wise way of helping people through difficult issues without using easy fixes is a model of Jesus' counseling. An example is "My Beautiful Feeling," about a teenage girl struggling with masturbation. Rather than condemn her, he goes to the root issue - her soul thirst - just like Jesus did in Jn 4 with the Samaratin women. Jesus did not condemn her for her adultry, but offered her living water to fill her thirsty soul. Fill the soul and the behavior will, in most cases, take care of itself. This was Trobisch's way, too.

I am a professional counselor today because of reading Walter Trobisch when I was a teenager many years ago. I say a beauty in helping people with the deep problems facing us in a way that was profound, yet gentle and like our Lord. I cannot recommend this any more than that - Walter Trobisch is a model counselor because he models Jesus.

I don't believe I've ever read a more eloquent dissertation written on love, faith, or marriage. This isn't just a typical "self-help" book. This book opens your eyes and shows you that love, faith, and marriage are much larger, much more fragile, much more precious, and much more rewarding than most of us have ever imagined. God bless Walter and his wife Ingrid for this amazing collection! I really hope that it will get republished, because used copies are few and hard to come by.

How does one review a book by Wiesel? He speaks the truth, is a modern day "righteous Jew", and makes one think of the meanings of life

A moral voice for the Mankind
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-14
Elie Wiesel here speaks with Richard Heffern on major questions of our moral and ethical life. The fourteen chapters of this work discuss such questions as "Am I My Brother's Keeper" " The Role of the Intellectual In Public Life" " The State: Its Proper Role in Our Life " " On Being Politically Correct" "Nationalism and Upheaval" " The Anatomy of Hate"
"Taking Life Can it be an Act of Compassion?" " Making ourselves over in whose Image?" " The Mystic character of Memory" " Anti-Semitism"
Heffern a veteran broadcaster is an extremely intelligent moderator. Wiesel is as always wise and humane . He for instance in the opening dialogue talks about the problem many of us face, of where to focus our attentions in a world in which there are so many problems, so much suffering, so much need for help. Wiesel the witness of the 'Shoah' whose book 'Night' perhaps more than any other made a wider publc feel the horror of the 'Holocaust' is not simply a spokesman for the Jewish people, but for all of Mankind. He is a person who cares and has done much to help. His description of his first efforts in Biafra shows once again how he extended his caring for all of mankind.
Anyone who wishes to have real insight into the moral and political dilemnas facing Mankind today should read this outstanding book.

Thought-provoking conversations

Review Date: 2004-11-04
Elie Wiesel is an extraordinary figure in history and literature. As a Jew who survived the Holocaust and horrors of the concentration camps when he was but a child, he has spent his life questioning the very nature of his faith and his fellow human beings. In "Conversations With Elie Wiesel" readers are given the opportunity to hear his viewpoint on a wide range of topics that concern America, and the entire world, today.

These conversations have been honed from numerous interviews with Richard D. Heffner, moderator of the public television show "The Open Mind." Together these two men discuss religion, tolerance, hate, compassion, capital punishment - almost every so-called hot button that exists in the political, social and moral concerns of our world. Elie Wiesel proves himself to be a thoroughly intelligent man, who raises questions even while recognizing that some may never be answered. His distinct experiences and his Jewish faith play a role in all that he says or does.

These conversations are interspersed with interludes that give true Wiesel fans insights into the inner workings of his mind. Wiesel argues for the necessary role of compassion in human interactions. We need to care about our brothers, in spite of our differences, if there is to be any peace and understanding within our world. He holds out hope for the day when everyone could come together and put aside all the differences and squabbles that separate us and tear us apart. This truly is a thought-provoking read for anyone interested in religion, philosophy, and the fate of our world.

This book hits the nail on the head on corporate abuse. I displays the greediness and quest for a good "bottom line" instead of treating employees with the respect they've earned.

A must-read for anyone in the corporate world - abused or no

Review Date: 2000-01-12
I read this book when I was working at a very abusive organization. It brought clarity to my confusion, removed the personal burden I had been carrying and alleviated a great deal of stress from my life. We stress when we don't understand. This book will bring you understanding. If this was all "Corporate Abuse" did it would be more than worth the price. However, the clarity of the author's ideas combined with the personal anecdotes made otherwise esoteric and ivory tower theories shockingly real and applicable to daily life. This is not a 'whoa-is-me', 'corporate = bad, employee = good' diatribe. It offers incredible insight into how corporations work and why these situations are inevitable when certain foundations have been laid. It is just as valuable to the corporate mind as it is to the employee. In addition, the authors offer guidelines for both parties to either improve the situation or avoid it all together. That's why it gets a fifth star!

A must-read for those dealing with abusive workplaces.
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-27
Perhaps the greatest benefit of this book for those who find themselves in abusive work situations is coming to the realization that there really is a problem and that they are not to blame for it. Abusers are well-skilled at making those they abuse shoulder the blame for the abuse. Wright and Smye make it clear that the abusive work situation is both dysfunctional and wrong. The sub-title "How Lean and Mean Robs People and Profits" makes it clear that no one wins. The writers identify three patterns of workplace abuse (there are likely others). These patterns of abuse are systemic rather than situational. To that end they identify them as cultures. The first pattern is the "culture of sacrifice." The essence of this culture is its insatiable demands on the employee. The employee can never give enough to satisfy the demand and personal boundaries are treated as non-existant. The second pattern which they identify is the "win-lose culture". The essence of this pattern is healthy competition turned demonic. Co-workers are pitted against one another in a Darwinian expectation that the strongest will prevail, thus making the corporation stronger. The third abusive pattern is the "culture of blame." In this pattern someone is always to blame for any problem. Problems are never the result of processes or systems and the culprit, once identified, is destroyed. This book is not about some soft-hearted sentimentality that cannot deal with competition, hard work and difficult decisions. It is about recognizing and understanding what it means to be human and treat others in the workplace with respect. It is about building a culture with an eye to the long term in which both the bottom line and the potential of the worker are maximized. The book is an easy read and provides a good balance of analysis and examples of dysfunctional workplaces. If you've ever found yourself in an abusive workplace (or if you are currently in such a place) this book is a must-read for understanding your situation and extricating yourself from it.

This was an excellent book, well written and easy to understand. Originally I read it because I wanted to know how to help a person who was living a homosexual lifestyle. It helped me understand her a lot better, and I was able to relate to her in a way that enabled her to open up more. However, this book is not just useful for counseling and understanding the homosexual, but for all people who have any kind of sin, or ungodliness in their lives. Basically that means all of us at times! So this book has helped me with my own life, and with relating to others with problems other than homosexuality. I recommend it for everyone.
