I was really excited when I received the book. Fantasticbooks stated that the book was in "new" condition and when I received it, it was. I also appreciated getting the book via USPS as opposed to other carriers. I like receiving the book in my PO Box instead of hoping that I am home when the other carriers come. I will continue to use this vendor as I continue to buy textbooks! EXCELLENT~

Decoding the Ethics Code is must reading for psychotherapists from all the mental health guilds. Celia Fisher was a member of the APA committee that drafted the 2002 revision of the Ethical Code, and there is nothing like going to the source. The book is readable and informative, and helps to make sense of the new HIPAA regulations No ethical practitioner can afford to be without this resource.

I wish this were called a Code of Biblical Ethics; I think more people would read it! This tells practically how to love G-d and your neighbor...and who shouldn't do that?

This is wisdom from beginning to end. It is NOT limited to Jews either. Telushkin uses references from non-Jewish sources. This is largely a book on self-improvement. Easy reading with a lot of references in which one can check out on their own. This is a keeper. I will not get rid of this book since I will continue to read it several times over.

Like Telushkin's Book of Jewish Values (which overlaps somewhat with this book) this book is not only full of practical ethical suggestions. Here are a few examples:

1. To help yourself give other people the benefit of the doubt, think of rationalizations that might help, just as if you were making excuses for yourself

2. Praying for others when they are sick is a fine thing, but why not go further by praying for those with other problems such as financial or relationship issues?

3. When visiting friend you haven't seen in awhile, say the Shecheyanu prayer to thank God for the privilege;

4. If someone is getting on your nerves, think of ways in which they might be superior to you;

5. Chant "Do not be easily angered" (al tehi noach lekos) to calm yourself down if you feel yourself getting angry.

Although I am not sure yet which (if any) of these ideas I will have the self-discipline to put into practice, this book has already inspired me to do a little beyond what was directly suggested.

Since this time of year is (for Jews) a propitious time for reforming oneself, I think this book is especially useful this time of year.

Concededly, a few of the book's suggestions seemed a bit overly ambitious to me- but my feeling is that if this book inspires me to do just a few small things differently, than it is worth the time I invested in it.

Wise advice throughout, for anyone

One of the things I find most wonderful about this book is that I can pick it up and read only a page, and have something worth thinking about. It is packed full of good, clear advice and ethical guidance. On first glance there are some ideas that seem obvious, and some that seem impossible. But with further reading and effort the impossible becomes easier to conceive of, and ideas that seemed obvious reveal hidden depths. I am on my second reading of the book, mixed with frequently jumping around in the text, and I'm certain I'll get something new from it with future readings as well.

A particularly lovely touch to this book is that with every piece of advice, there is an explanation, an example, or an anecdote - something to tie the subject in to our every-day lives. For example, the section on common sense and tact quotes the late Jewish humorist Sam Levenson in saying "It's not so hard to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and don't say it." This seems like such a small thing, but this little bit of humor stays in my mind better than any lecture, and is just enough to remind me that I mean to improve. Other such anecdotes show that some of the "impossible" expectations through the book are in fact anything but.

So many "self-help" and "self-improvement" books are easy to skim through, more fluff and cheery stories than content. While many books on living the good life have passed through my hands, no other has lingered quite as well as this one. Every time I open it I am reminded of some aspect of life that I should focus more on, and I expect it will be on my shelf for a very long time.

Here's a book that challenges you to have faith in a higher power, someone other than yourself. Motivational and spiritual. My husband, Mark is reading the book. The Code teaches you how to think differently, more positively. In turn, things start happening around you that are more positive. A great book to read at the beach.

An original work on using "intentions" to create a better world
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-08
I really liked this book. It's the first thing I've read by Tony Burroughs, and it's very original. Along with others in his "Intenders Circle," he has created a Code which results in personal fulfillment while at the same time creating a better world for all of us to live in.

The code includes the following 10 "intents" which he goes on to explain in detail throughout the rest of the book:

1. Support life
2. Seek truth
3. Set your course
4. Simplify
5. Stay positive
6. Synchronize
7. Serve others
8. Shine your light
9. Share your vision
10. Synergize

Throughout the book, in addition to the text, he provides what looks like hand-written notes that contain some truly valuable information. For example, in discussing the intent to support life, he notes:

"When we realize that we are becoming exactly like those we oppose, shouldn't that be reason enough for us to stop opposing them?"

He also provides poems in each section that relate to the intent he is discussing. For instance, in discussing the third intent (set your course), he includes the following as part of a longer poem:

"Our thoughts and words are powerful. They are active and very energetic. Used unconsciously or with disrespect they bring chaos."

This is a book that will grab your intention and cause you to think about things in a new way. I would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to achieve their highest good and help the rest of the world do the same.

The Secret Roadmap

Many books have been published about the Laws of Manifestation like "The Secret" and "The Power of Intention." But I consider the works of Tony Burroughs, especially this book (as well as "The Intender's Handbook" and "Highest Light Teachings") the road map, the "how to" manuals to actually being able to manifest things in your life that are for the highest good. And Tony's style of writing is down to Earth, fun, and easy to read and understand. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book.

I am a high school teacher who regular shares the insights contained in Tony Burroughs books with my students. In fact, last May I gave a copy of Burrough's "Intender's Handbook" to many seniors as graduation gifts. I also gave that book to many family members and friends this last Christmas as Christmas gifts. I believe in the content contained in Burrough's books so much and want to excitedly share it with others!

"The Code," Mr. Burroughs latest as of March 2008, contains some of the information presented in "The Intender's Handbook" and "Highest Light Teachings" without being unnecessarily repetative. After reading "The Code", you may want to consider reading his aforementioned, non-fiction titles although they can be a bit difficult to locate--his website has inexpensive copies, though!

Get this book! Your life won't be the same. ENJOY AND TRANSFORM!

Profit for Life shatters the old paradigm that success in business means sucking the life from people and natural resources by viewing both as dispensable commodities. By showing us how success in business--including big business--goes hand-in-hand with respect for human and natural communities, Bragdon frees us from the wrenching misconception that profit and citizenship represent a kind of zero-sum game.

Bragdon unites head and heart in one of the most uplifting books I have ever read. Profit for Life offers hope with a firm footing. I recommend Profit for Life to anyone with an interest in business management, strategic investment, or corporate citizenship.

Book Review for Profit for Life: How Capitalism Excels
by Ann McGee-Cooper

How do you measure the value of servant leadership in business? How can we know it works? These have been two of the most frequently asked questions in our consulting practice over the past 30 years.

In Profit for Life, Jay Bragdon provides us with some compelling answers. He does this by setting aside much of the linear cause-and-effect thinking that drives business these days, and adopts a more rounded, holistic approach that gives us deeper insight into the firm.

The book is based on the experiences of 60 companies - Bragdon's "learning lab" - that broadly represent the industry/sector diversity of the world economy. Throughout the text he describes 16 of these pioneering companies, called the Focus Group. The distinguishing feature of all these firms is their effort to mimic living systems - in the ways they organize, manage and add value. This mental model is radically different from the traditional one that views the firm as a money making machine.

Although it may seem counter intuitive, the living system approach yields vastly superior results than the traditional one. For example, the average equity return of learning lab companies was nearly double the S&P 500 over the past decade; and their excess performance continues as this review is written. Bragdon expects such premium returns will diminish over time as the more effective methods of the living system model become copied and enter the mainstream. Nevertheless, these results are a strong affirmation of the milieu in which servant leadership normally operates.

Servant leadership, to Bragdon, is all about relationships. He says "relational equity" is the foundation on which companies build financial equity. When companies care about people and the things people care about, Employees become inspired and their inspiration cascades into everything they do, including their relationships with customers, suppliers and other key stakeholders.

The raison d'etre of these servant-led firms is value creation - value that permeates all relationships. Companies that excel at such value creation pursue a strategy Bragdon calls "living asset stewardship" (LAS). The fundamental premise of LAS is: Profit arises from life, and must therefore serve life if it is to be sustainable.

To understand the strategic value of living asset stewardship, Bragdon makes a critical distinction between living assets (people and Nature) and non-living capital assets (buildings, equipment and financial reserves). We see this in three contexts. First, people are closely bonded to Nature - genetically, physically and spiritually - in ways that capital assets are not. Second, living assets are the source of non-living capital assets. And third, because living assets are inherently creative and emergent, their value grows over time rather than depreciating as capital assets do.

The operating leverage in the learning lab and the 16 Focus Group companies resides in the human heart rather than in mechanistic financial gearing. This is supported by the fact that they generate consistently higher returns on equity while carrying substantially lower debt ratios.

Although traditionally managed companies have been adopting some stewardship practices in the past decade, Bragdon finds their approach differs fundamentally from those in his study. In the mechanistic view of these firms, stewardship is an add-on that is subservient to their drive for profit. By contrast, in companies that have adopted the living system model, LAS is deeply woven into the value creation process - reflecting the fact that they see themselves as "living" and therefore integral to, rather than separate from, Nature and society.

Profit for Life builds on the brilliant work of Arie deGeus, former coordinator of Group Planning at Royal Dutch/Shell, and Harvard biologist Edward O. Wilson. DeGeus' classic, The Living Company, noted that long-lived companies had a collective consciousness, were sensitive to their environments, tried to work in harmony with the world around them, and strove to leave a legacy to future generations. Wilson tells us this collective consciousness is an expression of humanity's deep affinity for life, which he calls "biophilia," and that our biophilic instincts have evolved over thousands of generations of natural selection.

In my work as a teacher of servant leadership, I would highlight the paradigm shift Bragdon describes. The mission of leaders in LAS organizations is to serve and grow their people because that is the source of the firm's liveliness and capacity for growth. As Robert K. Greenleaf said: "The first order of business is to build a group of people who, under the influence of the institution, grow taller and become healthier, stronger and more autonomous." That seminal quote is used twice in the book to describe the power and generative capacity of LAS.

I highly recommend this book and will be using it regularly in our practice.

An Extraordinary Book: A Must Read

I intend to recommend Profit for Life to all my current MBA students. Next fall I am team teaching an MBA core course that combines Operations Management and Managerial Accounting. I intend to make the case that your book should be required reading and part of the course.

I became familiar with the work of W. Edwards Deming in 1990 and attended one of his four day seminars a year later. I also began to follow Peter Senge's work and later read Margaret Wheatley's book, Leadership and the New Science. Tom Johnson's book, Profit Beyond Measure, has been required reading in my Advanced Managerial Accounting elective at the MBA level.

Bragdon's book has brought the ideas, theories, and concepts discussed by these individuals together for me in a way that I could not have imagined. More importantly, he has not only taken their ideas to the next level, but done it in a way that provides a tangible blue print for how to change our current style of command and control management with its focus on profit maximization to a LAS Theory of Management.

The use of the sixteen focus companies from the LAMP INDEX and the author's ability ability to clearly show the distinctions in their style of management from the traditional management models that continue to be taught in almost all business schools, and the success these companies have achieved not just financially, gives those of us hoping to change management education and core business curriculums a new hope.

Thank you for such an outstanding book.

This is not one of those lightweight business books that repeats its Chapter 1 message over and over. It's chock full of research-based information that anyone involved in the sustainability movement should have. The publisher is Peter Senge's non-profit, so if you're familiar with his excellent work over the years, this would make a great addition to your library. The author's passion for his subject is obvious from page one.

A Must For All Professional Investigators...
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-07
As a licensed private investigator, college instructor of private investigations courses, and an avid reader of investigative texts, I must commend Ms. Kitty Hailey, CLI, CFE, for writing the only definitive book on ethics for the investigative professional.

Individuals seek out the expertise of the professional investigator when they are in need of help. The role of the investigator is to provide the necessary assistance in a manner that is factual, accountable, and complete. Nothing, however, stops the unethical practitioner who takes advantage of those for whom he or she works. "Code of Professional Conduct" has been prepared to advance the reputation of the private investigation profession, and to ensure that sufficient effort is afforded to each client.

A majority of the professional investigation associations already invoke a code of ethics and/or cannons of professional conduct. Although similar in many respects, they also vary greatly.

Ms. Hailey has compiled, compared, and contrasted the various doctrines of these codes. They have been categorized and restated with emphasis on clarity and simplicity of language.

The private investigation profession demands the most diligent, honest, and professional conduct of its practitioners. "Code of Professional Conduct" will help meet that goal.

This book should be in the hands of every practicing investigator, every person who hires an investigator, and the leaders of every investigative association.

Overall, the content is excellent and the author is one of the nation's foremost authorities on professionalism in the investigative professions. If you are truly interested in this topic, and all professional investigators should be, then this is the title you've been looking for.

I would also like to personally thank Ms. Hailey for taking the time to send me a signed copy of this book and her other book, "The Professional Investigator: A compilation of Articles, Essays and Forms".

As always, check with your local library or bookstore to see if you can read/review this or any title before deciding to make a purchase. This method has effectively allowed me to make the most of my investigative library budget.

This book...is, without a doubt, the most important book ever written for our profession. There should never again be a question in the legal profession about the commitment of professional investigators to ethical and responsible behavior. This is a book that every investigator should read, should gift to others, should provide to association leaders, and should be sure to have in his or her briefcase for ready reference to prove to clients, courts, and the media that this work, and responsibility, is taken VERY seriously.

I needed this book when I was a young 20 something. The crazy thing is that some of us 30-, 40-, and 50+ somethings still need this book. But this book is foundational for having healthy relationships among women-friends and subsequently healthy relationships with men. If you were never properly educated by the elder women in your life, then connect with the mother-wisdom in Girlfriend's Code of Ethics.

For many of us the wisdom in this book seems like it is common sense. But once you read it, you will see how many us have made these mistakes and continue to do so.

This is a must read in a society that would have you to believe that there are not enough men to go around for women who are looking. The truth of the matter is that you have to know that that special man is out there for you and that perserving and nurturing our community of women is KEY to all relationships in general becoming healthier.

If you want serious wisdom cloaked in mother-wit, then this book is for you.
