What struck me about the Mystery of the Tolling Bell was its setting-- coastal New England! (Maine, maybe?) such a mystery would delight a Maine-iac like me! Also, it turned out that there WAS a tie-in between that mysterious cave and the
case that Mr. Drew sought to solve for Mrs. Chantrey. It was in this cave where the phonie cosmetic business was in operation. When, after boating accident, Nancy climbed to top of cliff to get her bearings, she felt weak and dizzy and went to sleep. In her dream, two elves carried her away and put them down. The elves were in fact part of the racket, Grumper (who did the chemical work) and his cousin Franz. So, this dream helped Nancy solve the case and bring the swindlers to justice (as she was able to identify two of the crooks). The ringleader, Harry Tyrox,
had a dozen ailases, like Monsieur Pappier, Mr. James et al. So did Mary Smith, the apparent front woman, who called herself Madame, Spanish Senora etc. Like all of the original Nancy Drews, this one is throwback to when many things we take for granted did not exist: there were no computers, transistor radios, dial phones, DVD's, audio CD's, or television (NOT EVEN MUNTZ TV's!) All in all, a very nice one.

This book is pretty good

This book actually deserves 3 1/2 stars. This is probably my favorite Nancy Drew book but they're not as good as the Annette books.
If you're going to read a Nancy Drew, read this one, but if you want a good mystery, try the Annette books which are better.

This was the eighth book I read, and possibly the best! When Nancy goes on vacation she ends up in a mystery. Her father isn't there yet so she goes out looking for him. She also is sloving the case of the tolling bell which tolls right before water comes rushing out. Aperson dies and a ghost has been seen the end is for you to find out.

This book offers detailed information on agates. what they are, how they are formed and where they are found. What I found most intriguing were the terrific photographs of agates throughout the entire book. I use agates in my jewelry design but was not completely aware of the multitudes of colors and gems that fall under the umbrella name 'Agate'
Very well worth the dollars spent for this book.

Agate has been found on every continent, but there are few illustrative references on the market devoted to agates alone. AGATES: TREASURES OF THE EARTH will interest both high school and public library holdings seeking books on geology and gemstones, providing a reference to their formation, geology, and identification alike. Color photos throughout pack a history that is a top pick for any gemstone collector and for libraries catering to them.

A Rockhound or Lapidary Must Have Book
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-10
The combination of Roger Pabian with Brian Jackson, Peter Tandy & John Cromartie present a well written book on some of the most beautiful, popular with collectors and sometimes scarce agates of the world. The first forty pages alone give the novice collector, lapidary, rock-hound, or just someone who has picked up a pretty banded rock on vacation an idea of how agates were formed, the why of the different patterns, and the names and terms needed to intelligently discuss agates. The pictures are out standing and many. The descriptions informative and to the point. The references in the back of the book present a good jumping off place to pursue further knowledge of specific types of agates. In my opinion this book was a thoroughly enjoyable and informative read, even though some of the newer types of agates were not presented.

This was a very good book! Someday, I'd like to read a book of testimonies from women about how their father made a difference in their lives. And testimonies from women whose lives would have been different if their father had been present in their lives. We learn a lot from each other's experiences. Perhaps that could be the authors's next project.

This is an encouraging book for the father who is striving to be the spiritual leader of his family. As the author shares touching personal stories from his life, he motivates fathers to go beyond the cultural expectations to bless their children and equip them for adulthood. Though I did not connect with the deep emotional wound of not knowing my father's love (and felt that the question "What does my dad really think about me?" does not necessarily define my true identity), I was challenged to be a help my children develop their self-confidence and understand my unconditional love and acceptance. I appreciate the experienced and biblical insights, though I did wonder about the book cover picture - it displays a father who looks an actor in a passion play!

When a woman makes peace with her father she makes peace with a fundamental part of herself. When you see a confident woman whose ability to hold her own esteem without overdependance on external validation ... that is most likely a father's daughter. These are women whose fathers were there, who protected them, and who were instrumental in being an involved parent. Such women have a healthy template for emotionally healthy relationship with a man and are often secure in their identity. If dad encouraged her to excel, she does. A friend of mine had a father who was a corporate lawyer of much success who pushed her in athletics to the point she was on the 1980 Canadian Olympic Speed Skating Team that went to Lake Placid BEFORE she was a legal adult. My father was frustrated that I hadn;t mastered the alphabet by age 5 that he drilled the ABCs into me one night after dinner until I walked away from the table reading a book cover to cover without stammering. Ever since then I became a bookworm and his demand that average was unacceptable still haunts me - especially when I have my share of failures like we all do. Just like Athena and her father Zues (see Awakening Athena) this is the father's legacy whole and distinct from a mother.

On the flip side women who have not made peace with a less than favorable relationship to their father owe it to themselves to heal this loss. Every female should have two involved biological parents or adoptive parents. Sadly, this is not the case. So ... the best thing is to co-opt the experience through the proper counselling and finding role models that heal. That said, it is best for women still hurting from father loss to NOT use a boyfriend or spouse to work out their father issues. Healing at the source is the best and sometimes just making peace with it once and for all independant of whether dad ever comes around is a gift you give yourself.

Ed McGlasson was a guest on our radio show this morning in Detroit, and generated one of the largest listener responses we have ever received from an author. Ed actually took the time to call my co-host's husband directly, encouraging him to read the book. He did, and found himself completely re-energized by the experience. This is a book for every man, father or father-to-be.

I was looking for some books to give my 5 year old daughter that she could do on her own with her 1st grade reading level. Well, these books definitely fit the bill. She ended up not even needing to read what it said, she simply followed the pictures and both her and her 4 year old brother (working with her) were bringing me all types of creative and neat hand animals and odd creatures they came up with their own imagination, all based off of this book. They really like it, it is good independent play time for them and for me as well! And the one thing that I really liked about the book is that if you run out of supplies, they are easy to replace, all you really need is to buy a huge bag of wiggly eyes and you are all stocked up again, or just have the kids draw their own eyes on the animals. So it's really nice that it's a "craft kit" and yet still usable to make more crafts after you run out of the supplies they provide.

We love this book. It has 20 different animals/aliens/bugs you can draw all from tracing your hand a certain way. The instructions are helpful and you can easily restock the supplies. All you need is some pompoms and googly eyes, though you can just draw those in if you'd prefer. My 5 year old can do these by herself and my 3 year old needs help. But I think it's fun, they do as well, and for kids who love to draw and/or do crafts, this is a great book to have!

The absolute best book for anyone who has a poor memory like me. I have been writing LISP for years, and I never have trouble finding what I am looking for. Each function has an example to help explain. The first half of the book is sorted by function TYPE! What a time saver! Even though it is 10 years old, it is priceless. This book is an excellent reference as the title suggests. Commands are listed in alphabetical order with an example how to use each. No long drawn out explanations. Good for a person with good programming sense and a bad memory for names. This book was published about the time of AutoCad R10. It has grown out dated, but the information is still very useful. I would like to see a new book published in this format for AutoCad 2000.

This book, which I read when it was first published in 1964, a month before I graduated from college, literally changed my life, as it has the lives of thousands of people since. This is the seminal work of the immortalist movement. Indeed many leading cryobiologists and scientists in other fields today were inspired to become scientists by this book. The additional contributions by R. Michael Perry, also the author of a seminal work - FOREVER FOR ALL, and by Charles Tandy, a life long student of Immortalism, only add to the value of this updated edition.

Needless to say, transhumanism and cryonics are still considered "out there" by the vast majority of humankind. "How can you possibly bring back a person's consciousness?" "God never intended people to live past 'three score and ten.'" "Won't this make the population explosion even worse?" "Who wants to come back all old and wrinkled." "I'll be happy to leave this veil of tears."

One hears all manner of rationalizations and just plain misconceptions to accept the status quo. More than 40 years ago (!!) Dr. Ettinger made, still to this day, the most eloquent and passionate appeal to assure a practically immortal future for every commoner who wants one.

This is the clarion call for cryonics in its pre-natal stage. This was the first widely read book on the subject and as such is by default the genesis of the cryonics cannon.

Any serious student of cryonics needs this book. It is not nearly as readable or as "slick" as other modern books on the subject , as it was written at a time before there we any signposts to go by in this field.

I rate this book 5 stars for its significance rather than its "readability". In terms of being a cryonics primer, this is not the book you want, all you need for a primer is 2-3 hours on the alcor.com website. (the most prominent of the cryopreservation firms)

The fact that this book does not have more visibility than it does is a crime.

This book has several great features that come together to make it worth getting for a father that you know. First of all the author has a perfect background to attract men who care about developing their families and who follow typical American sports. Ed was an NFL lineman for three NFL teams (JETS, GIANTS and RAMS). More important than his NFL background, Ed is a pastor at the Stadium Vineyard in Anaheim California. The excellent blend of theology, contemporary worship and practical ministry that is typical of the Vineyard movement exudes through Ed's book as well. His stuff is practical, theologically sound and attractive for men.

BTW-this book has over 200,000 copies in print now!

I recommend you look up his youtube video called 'how to treat a girl' as a good primer on this book's topic.

He will put wings to the soul of most men. It's a fast and fun read and will impact your thinking on why and how you should parent as a Dad.
I recommend you get a copy.

The only drawback is the paper on this book is newsprint. So the actual physical quality is not high, but in my book it's not the type of paper that matters as much as what is on the paper! This is a five star.

Review Date: 2007-04-23
This delightful story of Japanese/Hawaiians features Mr. Miyataki, a man who, having just had his sixty-fifth birthday, must now retire from the sushi factory where he has worked for his whole life. He loves working, and he is at a loss when he retires. His friends, too, are bored with retirement--one man says he is not strong enough to fish anymore, a woman says her eyesight is not good enough to go to an orchid show, and a third says his memory is not good enough to play cards. When Mr. Miyataki's grandson Sean sees a newspaper clipping of his grandfather as a child winning a science fair, he asks his grandfather to help him make a "marvelous machine."

This story by Big Island resident Tandy Newsome raises thoughtful questions about the aging process, the connections between generations, and the importance of taking positive steps to live a happy life. Children and adults alike will love the story and its message as Mr. Miyataki and his friends find new purpose in life.

The unforgettable illustrations are particularly well suited to the story. Done with brightly colored pastel-pencils in an extremely realistic style, Don Robinson's illustrations turn the characters into real individuals, their gestures and postures perfectly conveying mood and attitude. This book is a generous, loving portrait of a Japanese/Hawaiian family with a universal message certain to appeal to children and their families everywhere. Specially recommended for (but not limited to) ages 4 - 7. n Mary Whipple

A well-written, informative, and helpful book on Offshore Outsourcing -- by someone who knows first-hand
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-28
I bought a copy of this book and distributed it to many inside my firm. The general consensus was it is eminently readable, clear, concise, and helpful, and summarizes the learning of many experienced individuals who have actually lived and breathed Offshore program execution.

I'm honestly not sure if reviewer John H Kaplan actually read this book. For example, there is a great deal of emphasis on "formal communication" (read: methodology), and how important it is to making Offshore work. Awareness and management of risks, including network security and communcation, financial planning, and even internal communications, are identified and discussed in a pragmatic and accessible fashion.

I take strong exception to this kind of emotional lambasting masquerading as objective feedback. This is not the forum to discuss and decide whether Offshore works. Clearly, if Mr. Kaplan is doing Offshore at all, he is doing it unwillingly. But my firm has had great success with Offshore, both financial as well as in quality of delivery, as many have.

Don't let what is clearly an emotional rant against Offshore Outsourcing deter you from reading and learning from this helpful, focused, and relevant book. Personally, I found the book more useful than Freidman's "The Earth is Flat" as it is written by an actual practitioner -- for practioners.
