Cream of the Crop for Learning Flex 3Review Date: 2008-08-11
I have seen few books over the years that rise to the level of this book. It is great in both scope and in simplicity. You will learn to both create and understand the heart of Flex 3 with this book and with no personal gain for saying this, stop reading reviews and buy this book today!
(FYI... I am the author of ColdFusion 8 Developer Tutorial )
A great beginning to intermediate Flex 3 bookReview Date: 2008-08-11
There are some minor code issues, but he answered my questions on his website which is one of the best book websites I've seen [...]. All of the source files and the working applications can be viewed on his site.
I also really enjoy the layout of the new Learning series that O'Reilly has been putting out (similar to the Learning ActionScript 3 book). The color coding and pictures are a nice change from the majority of black and white technical books.
Since the focus of this book is Flex and MXML, newer programmers will need to supplement this book with an ActionScript book once they start to build more advanced applications.
Highly recommended for those who are new to Flex.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!Review Date: 2008-07-29
Cole, begins by jumping right into the basics of using Flex and Flex Builder. Next, the author helps you get acquainted with Design mode and shows you how to build an application visually. Then, he looks at code that was generated from Design mode and shows you how to write your own. The author continues by showing you how to get going with this powerful and simple programming language. Next, he discusses what events are and how too use them in your application. Then, the author will show you some of the powerful features of Flex. He continues by explaining how to lay out your applications. Next, the author will discuss the Form container and show you how to create rich experiences with Forms and user input. Then, he shows you how to use data that's created within your MXML code, or even data that's spread across the web. The author continues by showing you how to structure your application by providing a set of user-selectable views. Next, he discusses the concept of view states, which let you easily design the flow of your applications. Then, the author shows you how incredibly easy it is to apply visual effects to your components with simple MXML. He continues by showing you how to customize every visual aspect of your Flex applications, making your applications truly custom and unique. Finally, the authors shows you how to take your applications and show them to the world.
This most excellent book provides a step-by-step tutorial through all aspects of Flex development, from familiarizing your self with the right tools to learning basic features of ActionScript and MXML, to sharing your completed work with others. More importantly, the author chose topics based on what he felt empowered you to begin development without overwhelming you.

a lot of nice extras on the cd-rom. Great sense of humor and kind of hard to put down. Twice already
I've used it as a reference. I will look to buy other books from this author. I can't believe he covers both
command line and gui apps that either do or almost do the same thing! Now I can get work done no matter
what with my small home network.
Gee,I really DIDN'T know you could do that in Linux!!!Review Date: 2002-03-15
I picked this book up out of pure curiosity - a chimpanze on the cover of a Linux book? As I looked inside, I thought, "Gee, I really DIDN'T know you could do that in Linux!" My curiosity soon turned to amazement "Hey, you can't even do that in Windoze!" Next, I realized, "Hey, I have to DO this!" and bought the book.
The author has a refreshing sense of humor that makes you grin as you learn. He provides dozens and dozens of hard-to-find applications and tells you exactly what to type to implement the program. The CD includes helpful utilities, entertaining games, and even a full office suite. (Try to get THAT in your Windows O.S.!) Most of the programs on the CD include complete source code as well as a binary executable file. Many of the tools can run right off the CD.
This book is hard to beat if you want to get that "extra edge" in Linux. Your friends will be amazed and exclaim, "Gee, I didn't know you could do THAT with Linux!!!"

One only needs to see my personal copy of this book to know that it has been poured over...covered in notes, highlights, stickynotes and folds- a true sign of a great book. (In my view)

A Must ReadReview Date: 2002-10-22
Success stories such as eBay and lesser-known eMarkets such as PartMiner are dissected to reveal what they did right, while spectacular flameouts such as Chemdex are shown to have lacked important ingredients for a good e-market recipe. There is a very good section dealing with how e-markets should be categorized which helps make sense of the galaxy of initiatives underway. There is a very insightful section on Knowledge Markets and how auctions for intangibles could become an important wave of future online commerce. All and all a great read and highly recommended.

First, some perspective. The authors emphasize that "electronic markets are not technological interactions. They are human interactions supported by technology." Ignore this principle and failure awaits you in the way it doomed the electronic markets in the 1990s. "Cyberspace markets cannot be thin replicas of the traditional market. Rather they must be as rich, complex, and compete as the traditional markets themselves." The basic trade processes of search, pricing, logistics, payment and settlement, and authentication must still be in place. Value must be created for all participants, and the electronic marketing venture must fit with the firm's other marketing vehicles. Creativity will have a significant influence on success.
The authors begin with an explanation of the opportunities, the value of marketing in cyberspace. The first chapter includes an explanation of the design of their presentation in the remaining seven chapters. Chapter titles give us an insight into the content: From Place to Space, Making Markets Work, and Auctions: The Devil is in the Details. Readers will learn about Using B2B markets in the Supply Chain, Using Markets Creatively, and Market Tactics. Dynamic Market Strategies are address in the final chapter, followed by a call to action encouraging you to stick your toes in the water and try this approach.
Each chapter is filled with education, insight, and mini-case studies to show us what has worked and what hasn't worked. You'll learn the jargon and the steps in the process. A good notes section, including website addresses, is complemented by a helpful index. And, expectedly, the authors offer a website for the book where more information and support is available. If you're ready to open your mind to some fascinating possibilities, curl up with "Making Markets."

Buy this book! You won't regret it.Review Date: 2003-04-01
This book will give you that overall picture in DNS/DHCP/Dynamic IP aspect of networking. In addition, after explaining the big picture, he will tell you fine details about DNS/DHCP/DDNS (but not like how to install the server but rather like what are the DNS options are and how you can you them). Things like exactly what is autonomous system & its relationships to the rest, differences between domains-zones-areas, issues related to reliability, performance, security, availibility in designing your networks are discussed. The book also include a chapter on ipv6 and its relations to DNS (at the time of writing), on quality of service, and on mobile ip. An example will be how to tune bandwidth if a node is connected to 2 networks with different MTUs (max transmission unit).
Throughout the book, I see a lot of RFC numbers and also there is no bibliography anywhere. This tells me something about the book. The book is based on his experience as a consultant, not one the translation of other resources. As far as the explanation goes, you need to have some familiarity with basics of networking and you are on your way to fully understand what he is talking about. But if other people told you that you are a very experienced administrator, this book may not be helpful to you. Finally, I personally thank Mr. Paul Ammann for writing this book.

For a first-of-its-kind, its a good start...Review Date: 1999-11-02
Chapter 1 provides a technical review of TCP/IP. This is not for the light-hearted. It is, however, one of the best reviews I've seen in a long time.
Chapters 2, 3, 4 detail DHCP, NetBIOS name servers (WINS), and DNS. The information contained in these chapters is very detailed without being dry, straightforward with no BS. Time went into researching these chapters. You'll won't someone just reciting the RFCs off the Internet.
Chapter 5 deals with Dynamic DNS. It's a good read and informative. This chapter shows how DHCP, NetBIOS name servers (WINS), and DNS are combined into one server. I commend the author for attempting to cover a very difficult topic.
The rest of the book shows you how to apply Dynamic DNS to your network regardless if your using Windows, Unix, or a mixture of both. The author does a good job on applying this technology to Mobile IP. The book also touches lightly on Dynamic DNS and Win2K and contains some surprising information on this topic.
At the end, there is an excellent review of solutions from several vendors. Each with its own pros and cons.
Overall, I give the author a lot of credit for this book and not being bias towards any one particular OS. I would like to see more information added when the revised edition comes out. I've been using this book for reference as my company is restructuring its network.

"Effortless Algebra" is right !Review Date: 2006-04-01
The Algebra in here is not very advanced but it helps you learn the fundamentals and makes it stick with you. This would make an excellent high school algebra text. The ease in the way you will advance through this book will amaze you.
There are problems in every chapter and solutions given at the end of the book.
Wish I would have had this book in high school and I hope that they come out with a Calculus and Trig book soon, I'll buy them right away !
Enjoy the book
Beginners Level Beautiful BookReview Date: 2005-09-15
What makes the Maran books so good is the quality of the graphics they incorporate as part of their philosophy. The pages in their books look good, they are easy to follow, the text that goes with the graphics is excellent and ties in exactly with the illustration. I imagine they were designed together.
For this particular book, the Maran's have teamed up with Alistair Savage as a technical consultant to be sure that everything they say is correct. Dr. Savage is a professor in the Department of Mathematics adt the University of Toronto. The information from Dr. Savage is then merged with the graphical format for which Maran is famous.
Conclusion, Beginners level, but probably the best Beginners level book available. Why couldn't my old high school books have been written this well?
Excellent primer if you feel you're a bit lacking in your algebra skills.Review Date: 2006-09-07
This book is great. I have always been intimidated by algebra but this book really helped me get over that. This book starts very simple and works it's way up to more difficult concepts. You first learn about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing possitive and negative numbers. Then you begin to slowly move towards working with variables, fractions and equations. Then you really start to move into the meat of algebra by learning about graphing linear equations, linear inequalities, polynomials and you work up from there. Don't worry if some of these terms are unfamiliar, the book presents them in a way that sticks. I am actually enjoying working through this book.
The layout of this book is spectacular. it's nice and colorful. The author describes the topic on the top of the page, gives a few examples and then provides tips on the bottom of the page. It's a layout that really worked well for me. The colors help keep this book from being boring to look at. The author also makes a few jokes throughout his writing which helps the reading from becoming boring. It's really an awesome layout.
This is definitely a book for those who possess very little algebra skills. Although you dive through most of the algebra basics, the problems never seem too daunting which is excellent if that's what you're looking for. I am actually enjoying math now, which may sound geeky but it's true. I look forward to moving on to more complex algebra books and then moving on to more complex math, such as calculus. This book was a great first step, and I highly recommend it.
