Learning Flex 3: Getting up to Speed with Rich Internet Applications (Adobe Developer Library) is a fabulous book for anyone who wants to learn how to use Flex 3 effectively. It not only covers the basics of Flex 3, it describes several skills that you will need to develop RIA's. The author Alaric Cole does a great job explaining how to use the tools in Flex. I often get a book that is meant to teach you how to use an application, and find myself scratching my head when I create a project from the book and it doesn't seem to work the way the author describes it (often a step is left out, or 'assumed'. Every tutorial/project I worked through in this book worked great, and I actually understood how to apply what I learned to my own projects. The subtitle of the book is 'Getting Up To Speed With Rich Internet Applications' and that is exactly what this book does for a Flex Designer or Developer. I have used Flex for about 1.5 years now, and feel that I have a pretty firm grasp on Flex and Flash, but I still learned quite a bit from this book.

Thorough, yet easy to read

Alaric Cole succeeds in this book where many others fail. He manages to keep the pace of learning brisk, while providing adequate (and brief!) examples that clearly demonstrate his point without creating more questions. It's easy to read while still covering subject depth.

No books cover everything but looking at the title of the book it is aimed at teaching people new to Flex 3. (Or people who didn't get a good foundation in another book on the topic.)
I have seen few books over the years that rise to the level of this book. It is great in both scope and in simplicity. You will learn to both create and understand the heart of Flex 3 with this book and with no personal gain for saying this, stop reading reviews and buy this book today!

I've worked with Flash and ActionScript for a few years, but I'm new to Flex so I purchased three Flex books and I found this one to be the best one. I like how the author has you build smaller applications that work by themselves but also adds more features to them as the book progresses.

There are some minor code issues, but he answered my questions on his website which is one of the best book websites I've seen [...]. All of the source files and the working applications can be viewed on his site.

I also really enjoy the layout of the new Learning series that O'Reilly has been putting out (similar to the Learning ActionScript 3 book). The color coding and pictures are a nice change from the majority of black and white technical books.

Since the focus of this book is Flex and MXML, newer programmers will need to supplement this book with an ActionScript book once they start to build more advanced applications.

Highly recommended for those who are new to Flex.

VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Are you just getting started in using Flex? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Alaric Cole, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that is designed for anyone new to software development.

Cole, begins by jumping right into the basics of using Flex and Flex Builder. Next, the author helps you get acquainted with Design mode and shows you how to build an application visually. Then, he looks at code that was generated from Design mode and shows you how to write your own. The author continues by showing you how to get going with this powerful and simple programming language. Next, he discusses what events are and how too use them in your application. Then, the author will show you some of the powerful features of Flex. He continues by explaining how to lay out your applications. Next, the author will discuss the Form container and show you how to create rich experiences with Forms and user input. Then, he shows you how to use data that's created within your MXML code, or even data that's spread across the web. The author continues by showing you how to structure your application by providing a set of user-selectable views. Next, he discusses the concept of view states, which let you easily design the flow of your applications. Then, the author shows you how incredibly easy it is to apply visual effects to your components with simple MXML. He continues by showing you how to customize every visual aspect of your Flex applications, making your applications truly custom and unique. Finally, the authors shows you how to take your applications and show them to the world.

This most excellent book provides a step-by-step tutorial through all aspects of Flex development, from familiarizing your self with the right tools to learning basic features of ActionScript and MXML, to sharing your completed work with others. More importantly, the author chose topics based on what he felt empowered you to begin development without overwhelming you.

I loved this book. The software the author talks about is on the cd rom with documentation! There are
a lot of nice extras on the cd-rom. Great sense of humor and kind of hard to put down. Twice already
I've used it as a reference. I will look to buy other books from this author. I can't believe he covers both
command line and gui apps that either do or almost do the same thing! Now I can get work done no matter
what with my small home network.

I picked this book up out of pure curiosity - a chimpanze on the cover of a Linux book? As I looked inside, I thought, "Gee, I really DIDN'T know you could do that in Linux!" My curiosity soon turned to amazement "Hey, you can't even do that in Windoze!" Next, I realized, "Hey, I have to DO this!" and bought the book.

The author has a refreshing sense of humor that makes you grin as you learn. He provides dozens and dozens of hard-to-find applications and tells you exactly what to type to implement the program. The CD includes helpful utilities, entertaining games, and even a full office suite. (Try to get THAT in your Windows O.S.!) Most of the programs on the CD include complete source code as well as a binary executable file. Many of the tools can run right off the CD.

This book is hard to beat if you want to get that "extra edge" in Linux. Your friends will be amazed and exclaim, "Gee, I didn't know you could do THAT with Linux!!!"

It includes financial models to help you monetize the benefits of customer loyalty, extremely helpful "action plans" after each section and up to date case studies. This is a must read for anyone trying to sell, plan and execute an eCRM initiative.

Formulating a Loyalty Marketing strategy can be a challenge-further implementing your strategy can be a much greater challenge. Kathleen, has established a clear approach to blending strategy with implementation which is practical and useful. Executives who are struggling to identify which book is a blueprint toward 'Attracting,Serving, and Retaining Customers' have in my view one of the key books which is not fluffy and gets right to the heart of it.

Specifically- she has enlightened me to identify that not all loyalty is the same, and as a marketer-you must understand that different customers are loyal for different reasons and under different conditions.

One only needs to see my personal copy of this book to know that it has been poured over...covered in notes, highlights, stickynotes and folds- a true sign of a great book. (In my view)

Got it used (great price) from an Amazon Book Seller... What an amazing book... I have a few books on Dreamweaver, starting with version 2... This is the one I've been looking for... I'm now using Dreamweaver 8 and wanted a book I could use as a reference as well as a "How To"... Easy to find what I'm looking for, without a lot of reading to get there... It's big, It's heavy, Easy to read, Easy to understand, and the most useful of all the Dreamweaver books I own... I finally found it :-)

This book is heavy in more ways than one. For one thing, it's a big thick, glossy tome that weighs a lot. However, the good news is that it's worth its wait in gold! Never have a seen such an accessible, comprehensive aid for getting things done with Dreamweaver. It's task and tool based, with every step illustrated in color. Makes it incredibly easy to do use just about every aspect of the product. You just look up the task or tool and voilla! Fortunately, it's accessibility doesn't limit its utility, so this book is also for experienced DW users. I'm amazed at the sophistication of the techniques, even though they're presented in a way that make them head-smacking easy. This just could be the best overall book on Dreamweaver yet.

I teach in the same district as and have worked with one of the authors (Kim Cavanaugh) and found this book on the shelf and decided to pick it up for that reason. I like the layout of it because if you need help on CSS, you simply go to that section because it's in ABC order. As another rater stated, you do need some background in Dreamweaver but I was able to pick up some of the techniques from it. If you want a training book you'll need to look elsewhere but it doesn't tout itself as that kind of book. It's richly illustrated and the steps are nicely described. It will be a great addition to anybody's library.

Kambil and Heck have written an insightful and thought-provoking book on electronic markets. It is a must read for anyone who wants to understand online markets. They develop a framework to understand as well as to gauge the success of such markets based on in-depth study of several electronic markets. I particularly liked their characterization of B2B markets and its relationship to supply chain management. Their chapter on using markets creatively has ideas for both researchers as well as practitioners. The book has many examples, is written in a narrative style, and easy to read to three or four sittings.

As an entrepreneur and venture investor, I've found Making Markets invaluable because it's an excellent analytical framework for thinking about and creating markets. What is especially valuable is their Process/Stakeholder Benefit Framework which is elegantly simple yet so useful. I personally use that framework in examining various business models.

I highly recommend this book!

A Must Read

Review Date: 2002-10-22
Ajit Kambil and Eric van Heck have written an authoritative and highly readable book illuminating the much-misunderstood world of online auctions. In clear, simple prose, the authors explain that the initial excitement over online markets was not all dot.com reverie and new economy hubris. Given that offline markets such as the Dutch flower auctions have thrived for centuries, it stands to reason that online markets will succeed to the extent that they improve on existing markets. “As you will read in subsequent pages, human beings have always made markets, and they will continue to do so in the future- even if business is conducted through cyberspace.” Kambil and van Heck cut through the technical jargon all to common in “eBusiness” books, and elucidate very effectively why people participate in markets. They write: “…electronic markets are not technological interactions supported by humans. They are human interactions supported by technology.” This quote exemplifies why this book is not just another poorly cobbled together ebiz how-to; it is a book about understanding how we will buy and sell in the future and how managers can avoid the outrageously expensive mistakes of the past few years.

Success stories such as eBay and lesser-known eMarkets such as PartMiner are dissected to reveal what they did right, while spectacular flameouts such as Chemdex are shown to have lacked important ingredients for a good e-market recipe. There is a very good section dealing with how e-markets should be categorized which helps make sense of the galaxy of initiatives underway. There is a very insightful section on Knowledge Markets and how auctions for intangibles could become an important wave of future online commerce. All and all a great read and highly recommended.

Frontier Learning

Review Date: 2002-09-29
Yes, Virginia, there are still frontiers to be explored and conquered. The internet is a very active place, but still full of exciting opportunities. Feeling entrepreneurial or adventurous? You can create your own market on the net. The authors suggest that the future of exchange of products, services, and payment will accelerate in cyberspace. While the opportunities abound, there is a lot to learn . . . and there are risks. But, that's why you read a book like "Making Markets."

First, some perspective. The authors emphasize that "electronic markets are not technological interactions. They are human interactions supported by technology." Ignore this principle and failure awaits you in the way it doomed the electronic markets in the 1990s. "Cyberspace markets cannot be thin replicas of the traditional market. Rather they must be as rich, complex, and compete as the traditional markets themselves." The basic trade processes of search, pricing, logistics, payment and settlement, and authentication must still be in place. Value must be created for all participants, and the electronic marketing venture must fit with the firm's other marketing vehicles. Creativity will have a significant influence on success.

The authors begin with an explanation of the opportunities, the value of marketing in cyberspace. The first chapter includes an explanation of the design of their presentation in the remaining seven chapters. Chapter titles give us an insight into the content: From Place to Space, Making Markets Work, and Auctions: The Devil is in the Details. Readers will learn about Using B2B markets in the Supply Chain, Using Markets Creatively, and Market Tactics. Dynamic Market Strategies are address in the final chapter, followed by a call to action encouraging you to stick your toes in the water and try this approach.

Each chapter is filled with education, insight, and mini-case studies to show us what has worked and what hasn't worked. You'll learn the jargon and the steps in the process. A good notes section, including website addresses, is complemented by a helpful index. And, expectedly, the authors offer a website for the book where more information and support is available. If you're ready to open your mind to some fascinating possibilities, curl up with "Making Markets."

This is the best book on networking that I've read so far among lots of books I own. Instead of giving you tangible things like how it is composed of, I will give you a overall taste. I am a type of person who likes to "understand" the big picture first before delving into details. Then, it makes a lot easier to go and read those details knowing that how they are fitted in overall picture.
This book will give you that overall picture in DNS/DHCP/Dynamic IP aspect of networking. In addition, after explaining the big picture, he will tell you fine details about DNS/DHCP/DDNS (but not like how to install the server but rather like what are the DNS options are and how you can you them). Things like exactly what is autonomous system & its relationships to the rest, differences between domains-zones-areas, issues related to reliability, performance, security, availibility in designing your networks are discussed. The book also include a chapter on ipv6 and its relations to DNS (at the time of writing), on quality of service, and on mobile ip. An example will be how to tune bandwidth if a node is connected to 2 networks with different MTUs (max transmission unit).
Throughout the book, I see a lot of RFC numbers and also there is no bibliography anywhere. This tells me something about the book. The book is based on his experience as a consultant, not one the translation of other resources. As far as the explanation goes, you need to have some familiarity with basics of networking and you are on your way to fully understand what he is talking about. But if other people told you that you are a very experienced administrator, this book may not be helpful to you. Finally, I personally thank Mr. Paul Ammann for writing this book.

In this book is a surprisingly wealth of information.

Chapter 1 provides a technical review of TCP/IP. This is not for the light-hearted. It is, however, one of the best reviews I've seen in a long time.

Chapters 2, 3, 4 detail DHCP, NetBIOS name servers (WINS), and DNS. The information contained in these chapters is very detailed without being dry, straightforward with no BS. Time went into researching these chapters. You'll won't someone just reciting the RFCs off the Internet.

Chapter 5 deals with Dynamic DNS. It's a good read and informative. This chapter shows how DHCP, NetBIOS name servers (WINS), and DNS are combined into one server. I commend the author for attempting to cover a very difficult topic.

The rest of the book shows you how to apply Dynamic DNS to your network regardless if your using Windows, Unix, or a mixture of both. The author does a good job on applying this technology to Mobile IP. The book also touches lightly on Dynamic DNS and Win2K and contains some surprising information on this topic.

At the end, there is an excellent review of solutions from several vendors. Each with its own pros and cons.

Overall, I give the author a lot of credit for this book and not being bias towards any one particular OS. I would like to see more information added when the revised edition comes out. I've been using this book for reference as my company is restructuring its network.

The Algebra in here is not very advanced but it helps you learn the fundamentals and makes it stick with you. This would make an excellent high school algebra text. The ease in the way you will advance through this book will amaze you.

There are problems in every chapter and solutions given at the end of the book.

Wish I would have had this book in high school and I hope that they come out with a Calculus and Trig book soon, I'll buy them right away !

Enjoy the book

Beginners Level Beautiful Book

The folk at Maran do beautiful books. This one is no exception. It is intended for the beginner to get started quickly.

What makes the Maran books so good is the quality of the graphics they incorporate as part of their philosophy. The pages in their books look good, they are easy to follow, the text that goes with the graphics is excellent and ties in exactly with the illustration. I imagine they were designed together.

For this particular book, the Maran's have teamed up with Alistair Savage as a technical consultant to be sure that everything they say is correct. Dr. Savage is a professor in the Department of Mathematics adt the University of Toronto. The information from Dr. Savage is then merged with the graphical format for which Maran is famous.

Conclusion, Beginners level, but probably the best Beginners level book available. Why couldn't my old high school books have been written this well?

Excellent primer if you feel you're a bit lacking in your algebra skills.

You are probably checking out these reviews because either you want to refine your algebra skills, or perhaps you never had strong algebra skills to begin with. Personally my algebra skills were never up to par so I picked this book up. It's a bit embarrassing because I'm a software developer and most people when they think of developers they think of computer geeks with good math skills. Unfortunately I've never had good math skills. Well I'm sick of being mathematically illiterate so I picked this book up.

This book is great. I have always been intimidated by algebra but this book really helped me get over that. This book starts very simple and works it's way up to more difficult concepts. You first learn about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing possitive and negative numbers. Then you begin to slowly move towards working with variables, fractions and equations. Then you really start to move into the meat of algebra by learning about graphing linear equations, linear inequalities, polynomials and you work up from there. Don't worry if some of these terms are unfamiliar, the book presents them in a way that sticks. I am actually enjoying working through this book.

The layout of this book is spectacular. it's nice and colorful. The author describes the topic on the top of the page, gives a few examples and then provides tips on the bottom of the page. It's a layout that really worked well for me. The colors help keep this book from being boring to look at. The author also makes a few jokes throughout his writing which helps the reading from becoming boring. It's really an awesome layout.

This is definitely a book for those who possess very little algebra skills. Although you dive through most of the algebra basics, the problems never seem too daunting which is excellent if that's what you're looking for. I am actually enjoying math now, which may sound geeky but it's true. I look forward to moving on to more complex algebra books and then moving on to more complex math, such as calculus. This book was a great first step, and I highly recommend it.

Fantastic Marketing Book Without The Jargon

I spent hours trying to find a book that was specific to the industry I worked in - Business to Business/Industrial. There was nothing available in local stores. After finding, ordering and receiving The Marketing Managers Handbook I am convinced that if you do work in this industry, it is the best investment you could make for the marketing department of your company. I bought copies for everyone in the Marketing Team and it has really helped them implement and share ideas on a local basis.

Funnily enough, the book even cited examples of marketing completed by our US parent company - that's how specific this book was! Love it and recommend it.

... this should be the one you get. Eric Gagnon has packed more information into this book than any other marketing book I've seen. It's not filled with tons of theory or high level strategy. Instead, The Marketing Manager's Handbook literally helps you roll up your sleeves and get started.

You'll find excellent information and hands-on guidance in the following areas:
- Determining the appropriate marketing mix
- Effective messaging that conveys the "right" positioning
- Creating marketing deliverables
- Planning & executing direct mail & advertising campaigns
- Web site planning, design & launch
- Leveraging the internet to grow your business
- Maximizing your trade show opportunities
- and much more.

You get more good advice in EACH chapter of The Marketing Manager's Handbook than you generally get in an entire book by other authors on this topic.

If you're ready to get your marketing engine in gear, get this book!

Most marketing books want to deal with big picture topics like strategic planning, competitive analysis and market research. Speaking from experience, these are topics that take up a small percentage of the time for most real-life marketers at B2B corporations. Most of my time is spend on implementing marketing tactics to increase the number of sales leads that my company recieves. This book is the best book I have found for providing real-life advice on how to successfully implement the major marketing tactics that you should be using to increase sales at your company. I have been looking for a book like this for years.

Although I've been in marketing for more than a decade, I got a lot out of this book. The checklists provided invaluable pointers about what to cover when writing a marketing plan. I also bookmarked many of the web sites listed in the appendix so I can use them for further research. The author peppers every chapter with lively, in-depth examples that sparked a couple of new ideas for my business. Even the sample marketing plan in the back of the book was a helpful guide for fleshing out my own thoughts. Highly recommended!

this book is a great supplement to any intro marketing textbook or by itself -- taking you step by step through the process of writing a marketing plan. a practical book for anyone interested in learning/understanding how basic marketing concepts come together, or any new product managers out there not wanting to look like homer simpson ("DOH") when asked to write your first marketing plan. it'll help you frame your thoughts, create an outline of things to cover, and remind you of things you might otherwise forget to include. also serves as a great "cliff notes" type reference of the hefty marketing textbooks you devoured while in b-school.

Having no formal training in marketing, I was impressed by the straightforward way this book explains how to write a marketing plan. At times I'm tempted to go straight to the tactics-where should I advertise? What should I charge?-but this book prompted me to go back to the beginning, starting with my small business's situation, goals, and competition. This was the first time I've drafted a highly detailed, full-year marketing plan. I used the software packaged with the book as a starting point, but wound up creating a different format and order of topics for my finished plan.
