This needs better oversight

The 6th edition of this text was released in 2005, but should be roughly 608 pages. This is listed as such in another listing under the same title, though the softcover info for this text also seems to be incorrect. If this is the correct text the list price is also significantly higher for new texts. Double check before you buy ... though I tried and couldn't figure out how to do so.

I thought this was a standalone course

I was looking for an ear training CD that I could use in the car while driving. THIS ISN'T IT. It is designed to go along with the corresponding books. Might well have been my fault, but I didn't get that from reading the synopsis.

This may be a great course, but I don't know because I don't have the books.

A descriptive, and systematic coverage of facilitation
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-07
The approach taken is descriptive rather than prescriptive. Indeed, the authors insist that it is neither possible nor desirable to set out a prescriptive approach to build a learning organisation. The book relies heavily on extended case studies and includes substantial biographical detail on the leaders and key facilitators in the selected cases, as well as extended invited contributions by four of them. These case studies are used to illustrate the main shared features that the authors have observed in successful transformation to an organisation that is able to learn as part of its continuing functioning. Key features on which they focus include the use of 'action technologies' (action research, action learning and action science), a systemic view of change and an emphasis on the power of partnership between HR professionals and line managers.

The three 'action technologies' that lie at the heart of their preferred methodologies are jargon terms for: ß a research and design methodology that iterates from diagnosis through vision building and alignment to experiments and reassessment ß action learning using a number of devices to integrate learning and work, and ß the use of the techniques of skilled conversation and group learning to identify and resolve issues - the process of cycling between action and reflection and the principles involved in 'double loop learning' The conclusions are unsurprising, but it is useful to see them reinforced.

The authors do a service in reminding us that, while there are universal underlying principles, the move towards a learning organisation is an exploration and its steps can not be codified. Those who like to learn through case studies will find the book useful and practising facilitators will probably find it useful to 'compare notes' with those quoted in the book. However, it certainly does not replace any of my established favourites in this field.

I felt like the assignments and questions inside this lab book were really difficult for me to do as a student because I couldn't find the information in any of the 3 textbooks we have. I didn't like the "illustartions" either. I would have preferred real photos.

Object-oriented experts only need apply
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-27
If you are making the gradual ascension into more complex Flash programming and want to explore the object-oriented approach then stay away. This is for programming experts only.

If you are a professional programmer with a good amount of existing object-oriented skill then this might be what you are looking for.

The examples used in this assume a very high knowledge of many of ActionScript's existing (and some would see as obscure) elements such as the drawing API . You end up trying to learn object-oriented concepts AND very complex unrelated material at the same time. It would be nice to start with simple examples that show the concepts and then build upon them.

By chapter 3(of 12) I had enough, but forced myself through a few more and it all became a blur. Maybe after I learn OOP from another source I will come back to this one.

Stating the obvious
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-25
This book focuses only on identifying the visual, auditory and kinaethetic (VAK) representational systems and applying them to communication, learning and training. The author admits in the Preface, "Many trainers may read this book and believe that, in my discussions of the various training aids, I am stating the obvious. To a certain extent, that is true." (p.xii) I'm afraid this is too true. Sally's effort to give more detailed discussions only insults the intelligence of trainers. Do not be misled by the title of the book, thinking that you'll get much help "through NLP". The scope is very limited and the content much too basic.

Falls extremely short.

This video falls very short. Like the other review I read here, the videos just step through each of the menus and tells us what they are. I can figure that out by myself. I wonder is Sam (The author) is even a musician? I want to see how someone actually makes music with this product, not a point and click description of the product. Very disappointing.

Please, if you use this product and make music, turn on your video camera and share it with the world. There is a niche here that isn't being fulfilled.

I suffered through a couple hours of this training, and that was all I could stomach. I just didn't feel it was a good use of my time. Seeing the trainer simply going through each menu and pulldown option, speaking the name of the feature, changing the value of the knob, or whatever, then moving onto the next option just didn't teach me much. I can do that on my own. Just once I'd really like to see training on a music package that actually talked about using the tool to make actual *music*. Imagine that? But Noooo, that might actually make the training worthwhile. And it might actually require the instructor to understand how to use the package he is teaching.

Absolutely RUBBISH

Review Date: 2006-01-19
I am so disappointed with this video "tutorial"... the author skips so many steps during the process of recording and for some odd reason expects you to just know all these things as if they're so simple you'd have to be an idiot not to know how to do it. He doesn't explain half the concepts for beginners such as "what do you mean by 'sending to a bus', etc.

This has to be by far one of the worst video tutorials I've ever seen. I just had to stop only after lesson 5 because the author is so boring (his tone doesn't even sound like he wants to teach).

Totally not worth your time.

The CD covers basic tags not the newer features
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-20
This CD is a review of ColdFusion BASICS, but in terms of their implementation in ColdFusion MX 7. If you are looking for a Training CD which covers such things and coldFusion Components, using XML, creating Web Services, Xforms, Flash Forms, Flash Remoting, CFReport, CFChart, printing, etc. you will not find it here. This CD covers Basic Tags which have existed since ColdFusion 5, and some have been modified in how they are used in MX 7. I am writing this review primarily to make it clear this covers how basic tags are implemented in ColdFusion MX 7. If you are looking for a CD that reviews ColdFusion Components and Web Services, get the ColdFusion MX CD (without the 7) as it reviews Mx 6.1 very well. I have communicated directly with the author of this CD and it is possible that an Advanecd ColdFusion MX CD may be created to cover more of the latest features of MX 7.
