THE Way Forward

I have been working with Mr Arnold's ear training methods for just over two years now and would like to share with you some of my experiences over that time.

There is no other system of ear training i know that constantly pushes the boundaries of your aural perception. Working with his is as Mr Arnold reminds us a "lifetime's journey". Over the years i have steadily gained the ability to recognise any pitch in relation to a key center and sight-sing any required pitch readily (including chromatics). That is what one note complete and the fanatic's guide seeks to achieve.

The above lays the foundation for further development. In December of 2007 I finally completed key note recognition, that helps you to learn to adapt to various modes(major and minor) and recognise the key by listening to how notes function in relation. Now I am beginning work on two note that builds recognition for multiple notes and following complex modulations.

All this is impossible without dedication and an intense commitment to practice, practice, practice. As a guage i have worked at this at least an hour a day broken up into short sessions over the last two over years. And without keeping to this and really working at it, you won't be able to really understand what this method is all about. But IF you do, this will really change the way you are involved with music.

Just to describe a few simple experiences...

- Early on i began to gain a deeper sense of the music i was listening to. Suddenly everything opened up what can only be described as a kaleidoscope of colours.

- As an active musician, people began commenting on how musical and expressive my performances were getting and always "spot on" with pitching.

- Am now coming to grips with progressively more harmonically complex melodic forms such as modern jazz and funk.

I'm now embarking on the next phase in my ear training that is two note and beyond. I know it's going to be nothing short of gruelling, but with the positive changes that I have experienced in aural perception, I really can't wait to discover what else happens along the way.

Many thanks to Mr Arnold for his fantastic work, gift to aspiring musicians and continuing commitment to music education.

My only previous ear training was from my piano instructor a number of years ago. It was interval based, and useful to a limited extent. Mr. Arnold's method of ear training is very straight forward and logical. I must admit that the first word that comes to mind to describe using the One Note ear training CDs is FRUSTRATING. I really gave it my best shot for a couple of months and had virtually no progress. It is distressing to read so many reviews that say things like "I am looking forward to great progress." I did not see very many that claim significant progress. Like myself, they see the logic of the method but have not "gotten it" yet.

I have the luxury of having a good bit of time to listen to these during my commute to and from work on public transport. Not driving has it's advantages. However, I have to say that I can not listen to the CD for more than about 10 minutes without wanting to use it as a Frisbee.

I addressed my frustration to Mr. Arnold via e-mail and he told me that many people listen for a year (maybe more) before they make significant progress. Unfortunately, I could not make myself do that. Frankly, I just got too bored of guessing the wrong notes to a point that I could not pay attention. I began to dread listening to it and finally just gave up.

There are stories of success on his website, but most of the reviews here on Amazon sound like the people are still in the initial phases of the learning process, just as I was.

I rate this book/method four stars for potential for practical application and apparent logic of method. If I had to rate it on what I got out of it the first time around, my rating would have to be much lower. However, I suspect that my impatience was more to blame than the method, so I will give it another try.

It would be interesting to see follow-up reviews from readers here that have continued using the CDs and can now report more success (or not) than in their initial reviews. I, for one, could use the encouragement.

This is a book/tool that cuts out all fluff and gets right down to the bone. The message: To get the Ear, you need to listen & listen & listen & listen & listen ... After two weeks I'm getting C & G, but the rest is taking a lot longer; still working on it, but I have faith in this method. It's not a whole lot of fun; it's just plain simple & repetitive & effective.

The first truly logical ear training method I have found

Bruce Arnold's series of books are designed to achieve one and only one purpose: to teach...and to teach each subject the right way and in the most rational manner. He makes mention in different books and interviews to the fact that most music books or methods are designed for students to get good grades in school (I can't see how this method could be easily grade-able) or to offer the consumer a quick fix of success to feel that the book has worked and they haven't wasted their money, while in fact they will not really retain much of the information at all in the long run and the whole experience will have been a waste of time and money. I personally in my quest for good books on the subject of music have found this to be true, and I think that most of these books are made solely for the purpose of generating money (as most things are these days) and not really achieving their true purpose...the ones that seem to try to go past this I have found to be filled with half baked ideas and hazy methods.

I am a professional jazz/classical saxophonist and an composer. I have a degree in music composition and performance and studied with some of the greatest teachers that I believe that are out there. For me, disappointment with music study books, whether they be for improvisation, ear training, composition, has been a normal experience and I have been mainly writing and inventing my own exercises, techniques, and practice routines for lack of finding anything that made any more sense from any "educational book". This ended when I found Bruce Arnold's series of books. I am in awe of the infallible logic behind every method in every book. I have been working out of many different books of his: the ear training books, the sight singing books, the Rhythm series, Big Metronome and Time Transformation, and they all WORK. I mean they really, REALLY work, as long as you follow the instructions and have patience and make up your mind before you start that you are going to stick with it. When I first found the books I instantly knew that I finally stumbled across something finally that made sense...but have refrained from writing a review anywhere until I thoroughly tested the products out. I believe that many of the more negative or indifferent reviews you will find here or on other sites are from recent buyers who have not yet started to see the results or are from people who have not made the decision to follow the directions and truly have the patience to follow through.

I have been working with the Ear Training Method for some time now and am in the Two Note Series now, and my ears are at a level that I never thought possible. The concept of relative pitch as opposed to interval training is dead-on and if you study the method diligently you will see why it makes so much more sense. I have been working from THE BIG METRONOME every day and going through the rhythm books...and I am feeling rhythm in a way that is so effortless. When I play or compose music now it becomes more of a joy every day rather than a strenuous effort.

If you want to learn music the right way, so that every aspect of music from theory to transcription to rhythm is like a second nature, then I recommend Bruce Arnold's books. As an added plus, you can (and are encouraged) to email him about any problems you are having or just even on your progress and he is very prompt and thorough in his responses. This is clearly a person who truly cares about what he is teaching and who has limitless integrity in his methods.

If you ask me, the series of Bruce Arnold's Books and CD's are a goldmine, priceless treasures that can be bought for an incredibly low price considering the immense benefit that can be reaped from them.

Bruce Arnold is a teacher, not a writer. Don't think of this as a book, or really even as a CD. Think of this product as an approach to training your ears. It's a discipline that will probably take me years of effort to see results, if I'm good and do it every day for 10 minutes or so at a time. I'm not sure what I expected, but I think this point should be right up front.

It is the opposite approach to that used in my college level skills class. At my school they used an interval approach. Sing a note and then sing the note a major 3rd above that. Now up a tritone, down a minor second, etc. Frankly, I was thrilled at my progress with this method, but at the same time, frustrated at what I couldn't do and felt that there was something not quite right about it. It felt artificial and limiting, and somehow disconnected with true music. I believe that this approach to ear training (though hard) is the right one, and will (eventually) bring me to the skill that I want to possess.

This part of his training method focuses on hearing what the fifth (for example) sounds like in a key, if I understand it right, not in relation to the tonic, but in relation to the whole context. Well, that "recognition" extends eventually to all 12 semitones within the context of the key. Establish a key in your head, then hear a note and realize that it is the raised fifth, or the 7th or whatever. All octaves, even ones that you cannot sing. You're not to recognize the note out of context...that would be more of a perfect pitch. Not by the physical feeling of the note as you try to sing it. Similar to how you see a color and learn that it is blue, you would hear a tone and learn that it is the raised 5th. I can imagine hearing a tune on the radio or something, and then knowing that the melody started on the 6th, or that this passage had a significant word on the 2nd. Also, I can imagine making up a melody, and realizing that this note "sounds like" a 3rd...therefore I would know the key of the melody much faster than any technique I might have used in the past to finally figure out the harmonic context of a melodic line.

He's got more method than just this, which also needs to be going on at the same time. The Fanatic's Guide to Sight Singing and Ear Training (and be sure to get the CD that comes with this book--there are versions of the book available that don't include the CD. I suppose you could make your own). This is the other side of this coin. Given a key, produce (as opposed to recognize) this semitone and that semitone. This guide has exercizes that take you through collections of 2 semitones up to 6 semitones. Really, lots of exercizes there. My intuition tells me that producing and hearing the notes against the tonal center will complement the other book/CD where you're asked to recognized the isolated tone within it's context. He also recommends that you do these 2 exercises together for best progress.

Other books/CD's that he has are for later, so don't make the "mistake" that I made and buy those up front. You really have to master the basic levels before you'll be ready to tackle the more advanced phases of the method.

Everyone with a parrot really needs to know how to communicate and train their companion bird. It will benefit everyone concerned. This book is excellent and easy to follow. My amazon loves to put his rings on spindle, wave hello while saying hello on cue, puts quarters in piggy bank, high five, and more. I learned how to teach him these tricks through practicing the guidelines in this book.

This is an excellent book on the behaviour and training not only of parrots, but also macaws, cockatoos, budgerigars and other members of the parrot family. I have a 3 year old Hyacynth Macaw called Gervaise who has benefited enormously from my purchase. He never ceases to amaze me with his intelligence and agility. He is building up an impressive vocabulary and can do tricks like ringing a bell and eating seeds from my bumcrack. The fun's not all Gervaise's - as the title suggests, their company really does provide the owner with a great deal of pleasure, and this book can really enhance that pleasure.

This book, the third by Bonnie Doane, is a must for the new parrot owner or for those who have had a parrot for many years. I found this book to be an excellent guide when I first got my new parrot. I made sure I researched every book I could when I first acquired my two-week old baby parrot, and this book was one of my favorites. I found it very helpful in the training & learning process of handling my parrot as it matured and got older. There are chapters on obedience skills and training techniques for adult parrots, as well as how to work with baby birds, speech training, and trick training. There are 12 chapters filled with helpful advice that you should definitely be aware of.

I highly recommend this book. You should check out her other two books, "My Parrot, My Friend" and "The Parrot in Health and Illness." These are excellent books for your bird-related library in my opinion.

A good start!

This book is very well written and can easily be used as a reference guide as well. This book lacks only in one aspect (colour photos) of actual birds since I love to look at pictures almost as much as reading the information. I would recomend this book to anyone thinking of getting a bird or someone who already has one and is acting up a bit. I haven't adopted a bird as of yet but it's only days away. (I can't wait to get the Umbrella Cockatoo home). A really great site (except it is a little negative but very informative to future Parrot owners is http://members.citynet.net/skydiver/parrots/parrots.htm. Check it out . I looked online for two months to make sure that I was picking the right bird for our family and everything you need to know is right there or there's links to it.

With no formalized professional training in filmwork at all, we did it! And Mark helped. His VTC Training CD is unmatched: easy to use, personable, concise, and NOT BORING! Thanks, Mark!

VTC has created an outstanding primer that can take someone entirely unfamiliar with Adobe Premier to an advanced user in a very short period of time. Through repetition and an exceptional level of clarity and depth, you are walked through Premiere's most basic and advanced features with such skill and simplicity you can not help but understand them. There are many advantages of the CD teaching format over video. For one you are working on the same computer as your program. At any moment you can jump into Premiere and try for yourself what you have just learned. And the image is crystal clear on the monitor. You are looking at a screen identical to your program. With video tape the image you are looking at is typically slightly blurred requiring you to view an enlarged insert to completely comprehend what is going on. Another great advantage comes when it is time to review the material. The disc has a clearly indexed menu. If you need to recall something you just learned, it is simplicity in itself to jump to the portion you need to review instantly. Imagine all the hunting and starting and stopping you have to go through with a video tape. In many ways the VTC disc is even superior to having a class or private tutor costing hundreds of dollars more. There are close to ten hours of teaching on this disc. Even the best teachers would be unable to concentrate their materials in such a concise and effective way. Once you have left a class you are on your own, but with a disc, you can always have your teacher at hand.

I am a strong advocate of this teaching disc. I use Premier and After Effects and Photoshop professionally and Adobe thought enough of my opinion to ask me to participate in a multimedia focus group to advise on future features and shortcomings of its multimedia editing products. I know of no better way to learn Premiere than this VTC training disc. As much as I enjoyed this disc I should comment that the After Effects training disc is not nearly as good as this one. The "Total After Effects" video series is far superior. VTCs AE lessons are overly repetitive of little used vector features, fail to demonstrate interesting projects and worse leaves much of the program unexplored.

For anyone uncertain about paying the price for this disc you may try out an exact web based sample of all the VTC teaching programs on their website. The lessons are quite long and with the exception of the lower quality sound, you will get a good feel for how the teaching system works. For a very modest monthly fee you can also subscribe to gain access to their entire catalog of teaching products. While all their discs may not be of the same value this one is well worth the price.

Good for a crash coursem; too pricey

I bought this because I HAD to get the Premiere crash course ASAP. It worked pretty well, though you should expect this to teach you some basics and then some more advanced subjects. This means that it does not encompass all features, like Premiere's guidebooks do. The narration was somewhat too complacent and self-absorbed, and sounded at times as a promo for this guy's studio work talent. It also shows Mac, not the Windows version, but that is not too important. The actual method of starting the clips was very annoying, and I ended up reverting to my own manual execution of the MOV files. Once you do that and use your own Quick Time viewer - you can do more with these lessons. In some issues it lacked background for beginners. And also note that it deals basically with NTSC video editing. It doesn't matter for the subject matter except for the settings. SO if you are elsewhere in the world, a apart from North America and Japan - take note of this. But I believe that we, the non-North American, have become used to the fact that we are regarded as a second-class audience and that very few things created in the US take us into account. If it was to these books/CDs/videos/CD-ROMs - the whole world would spin on a 110V, 60 KHz electricity, would use only NTSC and use Zone 1. Alas, we have to accept this, I guess. So this CD-ROM is similar in mind set. Just expect that. I would state though that a $100 in a pricey sum for this CD-ROM. Once it gets below 60 - it's worthwhile. If you have the money - go for it.

This is a great CD...and it's that GOOD!

I'm new at video editing with computer software. The basic and advance features of Adobe Premiere 5 were beyond me. After skimming the available Premiere 5 books, I decided to take a chance using this CD. It was the best investment that I've made for my multimedia reference library. After completing the turorial, I was off and running. Everything works that's on the CD. It covers the basics of setting up the Premiere prefences to rolling edits and virtual clips. It REALLY helps to see someone go through the steps as they explain the concepts. There are some things you can't catch without seeing the actual steps. The guy who rated the Training Video on CD with one star didn't even use the CD! This is a hands on CD, and it is a waste of time for thos who don't use the Premiere 5 software.

Great!! Now, I'm going with this VTCs....instead of books...

well, this is my very best VTC Training CD. and I loved it. I've looked for other products from other companies, but I think this ones the best. the price is reasonable, and especially, this premiere 5 VTC is the best of all VTCs also I can say. If you are not a reader, and if you need to learn some graphic thing, I think this VTC will be better than anything else. Seeing is believing.

I purchased this book after being asked to create a Customer Service Training class for a group of employees, and boy was it a lifesaver! I've been in the training field for almost 10 years and have never come across a book that was so customizeable. The topics were applicable but were far better than the usual customer service "speak." It even has handouts that can be downloaded from the publisher's website. It is a fantastic one stop shop! I give it two thumbs up! I'll be keeping this book forever and defintely recommending it to my colleagues.

Having no experience with neuroscience, I began this book as a preparation for training in Neurofeedback. I took the title at it's word, "Getting Started". While I learned a lot reading the book, it assumes a certain level of knowledge of brain science and is quite badly organized for a beginner. I found myself slogging through very difficult, unexplained material which was then somewhat clarified in later chapters. I found myself wondering why the author didn't organize the material with the introductory material at the beginning and work up to the more complex theories and technical details. The author is obviously very versed in the subject, but the material is not user friendly. It's probably worth reading with the caveat that you'll have to go back and forth to figure out what he's talking about. In retrospect, I wish I'd read "Symphony in the Brain" first which is a history of neurofeedback.

I've taken many EEG workshops in the last few years, but this book tops many of them. There is a lot more here than just Getting Started in Neurofeedback. It is a must read for those starting out as well as for those who want to review and brush up on the basic concepts. I found Demo's approach not only comprehensive, but he also illustrates his major points with specific case examples. The only thing I missed was a table of normative baselines of peak to peak amplitudes. But apart from that, this book is a wonderful gift to the beginning neurotherapist.

This is the only book that I have seen that doesn't just give a theoretical overview of the field of neurofeedback but actually gives a workable, usable protocol which the reader can follow to get started with their equipment. I have found out the hard way that although one's intentions to work w/NF can be good the task of actually using it can be daunting. Unless you enjoy writing computer code and designing programs you will have a tough time getting started in this field. This manual gives you a streamlined method for step-by-step process of beginning to measure neurofeedback. I have used it successfully to measure basic neuro-quotients, where previously I was lost.

I had bought this book with high hopes based on the reviews and description. Make no mistake, this is a user's manual for several types of specific equipment (EEG-type) with very little background on how to interpret the readings or, more generally, on the various aspects of the neurofeedback field, or other methods of neurofeedback. This is a book by a pratitioner for a starting practitioner (dealing with how to set-up electrodes, how to read charts, a summary of a couple dated EEG systems, and how to choose an office space).

It does NOT cover in any detail theory or discuss latest research. Even as a reference for equipment/setup a quick internet search revealed several much more advanced systems available that were not even mentioned by the book. The book references DOS-based systems and alludes to Windows based systems.

If you are starting a business in this area and already have a firm grasp on the fundamnetals of this field then perhaps this book MIGHT be helpful, but anyone looking for an in-depth treatement of the wide range of neurofeedback techniques and/or comprehensive treatment of brain physiology/activity under different conditions should steer clear of this book - you will be disappointed. I am just glad Amamzon refunded my money.

good basic overview of simple coaching approaches

This a useful book which - although not a complete "toolkit" by any means - does provide a useful overview, and the beginning coach will find this helpful.

I found the authors' continuing hard-sell of their own training programs more than a little wearisome. After all, I paid for a book - not a sales pitch. Far too much ego in places, but still worth buying.

This book is a remarkably comprehensive resource for coaches. This great book examines the nature of change as well as the role of the coach as a change agent. It clearly articulates the stages of the coaching process. There is a wealth of assessments, profiles and numerous practical coaching tools. The authors (internationally renowned coach trainers) also discuss the role of the coach's personality, coaching techniques and how to use them range from self-awareness exercises, problem-solving techniques and journalling. It is research-based, thorough and very readable. Highly recommended!.

The 'Toolkit' is a highly professional, yet easy-to-understand reference book and includes a complete and very helpful glossary. The authors are the most respected coaching educators in the business world today. The professional coaching industry has evolved dramatically over the last two years and bears little resemblance to its fuzzy predecessor of the nineties. A lot of serious research and work has gone into this groundbreaking text book, and serious personal and organizational change can come from the use of the book.

The book brings together a complete listing of the major skills and techniques for organizational and personal coaches, and offers guidelines and instructions on how to employ them. The Toolkit provides processes, protocols, assessment instruments, forms, charts and checklists and examines the management practices of coaching. The text also details the changing nature and evolution of coaching, such as the increasing importance of specialization. To date, most available coaching books detail the standard practices of goal setting, action planning and some coaching interventions but they do not offer too many actual techniques that facilitate the desired change. Achieving measurable, sustainable outcomes isn't a matter of simplistic goal setting, personality profiling and cheerleading but requires the skilful use of validated, proven behavioral change methods and learning tools grounded in the behavioral sciences. In this book, these invaluable techniques are blue-printed and discussed, and then presented alongside case studies and exercises.

The success of any coaching program is dictated by the program's resources depth, scientific validity and measurability. This invaluable, well written and very accessible reference provides exact processes and details for achieving successful coaching outcomes and will find a place on the bookshelves of many coaches, consultants, trainers, HR professionals, learning institutions and corporations.

I ordered this for my daughter, Toni, because she loves to play music on her instruments. This is helping her to further her education and knowledge of music. Plus she is trying to learn writing music with this series.

This book is well laid out and explains clearly all the musical notations I've missed by being largely self taught on the piano. It covers everything from terminology to how to write out notes to scales and arpeggios. You can also purchase a CD that helps with ear training. It has a spiral binding which makes it very easy to stay open if you're using it at the piano or on a music stand.

My favorite book dealing with newborns and sleep

I received this book when my baby was about six weeks old and I wish I'd had it from the get-go. I had been feeling guilty about wanting my baby to sleep more, but Moore's discussion of the benefits of sleep (esp. daytime sleep which other books don't emphasize enough) completely convinced me of its importance and of the role I needed to take in helping my baby get to sleep. I also realized that many times when he was crying or fussing he really was asking for help sleeping and was not hungry or wet or uncomfortable or gassy as I'd assumed. I like that Moore is clear throughout the book about what ages she's talking about. Many other books about baby sleep are vague in this area and I thought my baby was "behind" on how much sleep he was getting and I now realize he's doing average or better in this area. We've been following N.A.P.S. pretty closely (though not religiously) and have seen a huge improvement in the amount of sleep our son is getting and also a big difference in his mood when he's awake. I think Moore's dual role as a sleep researcher and a mother makes her ideally situated to explain how sleep works in babies from a scientific vantage as well as how this plays out in the realities of life with a baby. The only reason I'm not giving this book 5 stars is that it is not as useful as a "sleep training" book (which it doesn't really set out to be) for getting your baby to sleep through the night, but I think it's invaluable in the early months before you choose a method or philosophy for more consistent sleep training.

This book really helped me

This book was very helpful understanding sleep cycles. I read it during my pregnancy and wasn't sure it would work. It definately did. I was able to recognize my baby's cues with the help of this book. As soon as she had 90 minutes of awake time (eating, diaper, etc) she would start to rub her eyes and get fussy. This was my cue to help soothe her to sleep. And sleep she did. A well rested baby is a happy one! She was sleeping through the night at 6 weeks. It was a great purchase! I wish I had this book with my first child!

Wish I would have had this book sooner...

In the six months since my son Benjamin was born, I have read every book on baby sleep available on the market. (Or at least it feels that way!) From Ferber to Pantley, who represent opposite ends of the baby sleep debate, I have been bombarded by different tips and tricks on how to get my son to sleep most effectively. My biggest problem to date has been determining a nap schedule that works for him. Dr. Moore provides a melding of all the philosophies in a direct, functional approach that is based on sound scientific research. I always like to know the WHY behind the choices I make as a parent, and she provides some interesting commentary on why many parents face the problems they do when it comes to baby sleep.

After employing her principals with my son for just a few days, I have noticed a tremendous difference in the quality of his daytime sleep. The BRAC (Basic Rest and Activity Cycle) is strong in him! I will recommend this book to all of my friends with young babies or to anyone I know of who is having a baby because the information makes so much sense. Currently, I just laid Benjamin down for his nap, and he's on the edge of falling asleep, making a few happy noises, right at the end of his 90 minute cycle. (Almost to the minute! It's sort of scary!)

The 90-minute cycle doesn't seem to apply to my baby

I bought this book because all of the previous reviewers gave it 5 stars and I read it cover-to-cover as soon as I got it. I had already started a sleep log for my 6-month-old son. After accumulating 2 weeks worth of data, I looked at the between sleep intervals and found that he does not run on 90-minute cycles. He's just as likely to go to sleep 135 or 205 minutes after he wakes than he is to go to sleep 90 or 180 minutes after waking. I wonder if the previous reviewers looked at their babies between sleep intervals before writing their glowing reviews?

The 90 minute plan may work really well for younger babies. I remember back when my son would wake up, eat (50-60 minutes), get a diaper change (5 minutes), be alert (20-30 minutes), and then go back to sleep until the next time he was hungry. He didn't have any problems sleeping back then, though, and I didn't need a book to tell me when he was ready to go to sleep.

I'm not convinced that the 90-minute cycle exists (at least not in 6-month-old babies) and I didn't learn anything else from this book that I hadn't already read online (for free).

I have actually trained my horse according to Ms. Ganton's book and it took virtually no time at all. I did not use a bitting rig - as my horse was already being ridden. I had virtually no driving experience and found the book easy to understand and the techniques simple. This is an excellent book for the novice driver. As an added note: my horse was always ridden bitless and no bit was used to teach him to drive. He goes bitless and blinderless. Aside from her strict use of blinders (never used by fire horses back in the day and used very little in Europe and horse farming)I will use her method with every horse I teach to drive.

There is one significant part of this book with which I must take issue. After one succeeds in harnessing and then hitching the green horse to the cart, do NOT, under any circumstances, follow the book's advice to then lead the horse with the empty cart behind. I did this and the horse was so alarmed by the noise behind him that he took off with me running alongside, hanging on to the bridle, trying to get a badly frightened running horse to stop. We finally came to a fence, much to the relief of us both. Since then, I've spoken to several 'driving' trainers and all of them, without exception, say to never, ever lead a horse with an empty cart behind. If I had been unable to keep up with my panicked horse (and it was a miracle that I could) he would have wrecked and most probably his driving days would have been over. Following that horrible event, he had to go back to square one in his training and be brought slowly forward again.

Did I read the same book as the rest of these folks? Wefound the "illustrations" to be amateurish drawings with very little clear detail and the photos were from afar and grainy with no discernable detail. The sections on how to harness, and particularly the fit of the harness, were poorly organized and without enough details. Basically, the book is very wordy but without giving enough clear step-by-step instructions and sharp diagrams and photos to really make the reader certain that they are proceeding correctly.

In reading and preparing for the first few lessons I felt secure that I had JUST enough information from the book to carry out her instructions. In practice, we got as far as the training shafts. We constructed them per her measurements, and tried to follow all of her instructions. Unfortunately for a rank novice there was not enough detailed information about how long the traces ought to be on a correctly fitted harness or how far and high from the horse's back legs the cross member should safely be positioned. Our first session in the "poles" was nearly disasterous. We were left with many questions regarding the correctness of our harness and/or should we have modified it in some way to make the exercise more successful. We found ourselves peering at the grainy photos straining to glean some detail that might explain why our set-up didn't fit her description. In reviewing the material we found that should we survive to hitch the horse to a cart, we would be uncertain as to similar details about distances, heights, lengths, etc.

Unfortunatley with this book, it didn't give me the information I was looking for. I have driven before, but have never broken a horse to harness, and wanted to make sure I was taking all the right precautions to do it right the frist tim.. I felt this book left alot of questions unasnwered, especially with the grainy and unclear drawings. The insctructions were very unclear and there was no concise "to the point" aspect about them. Honestly, I basically got a review of what I already knew, and felt this book would not be a help for someone breaking her horse to drive. If anythign it is a usefull reference for those already having experience in driving. After reading through it, this book is going in ebay.

I Use This As a Master-Level Coaching Text Book
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-15
This book is written as university-level textbook on the coaching profession. It covers what coaching is and how it is used in business today, particularly in Australia the Author's setting. The authors provide coaching models and do a thorough job of describing the core issues and skills of which coaches must be aware.

Part one of the book defines coaching as "a conversation, a dialogue, whereby a coach and coachee interact in a dynamic exchange to achieve goals, enhance performance and move the coachee forward to greater success" (page xiii). They write of what coaching is, and is not, and what are the qualities of a successful coach.

Part two describes business coaching, executive coaching, the manager as coach and team coaching. Each is addressed in a separate chapter with helpful information, tools, and tips on the "how-tos" of coaching that particular client. These chapters are rich in advise on what to watch out for and pay attention to when working with a certain type of client.

Part three speaks to coaching skills and issues. One chapter starts out as goal setting and then backs up to the client purpose, vision and values as a base for establishing goals. The coach can surface greater perspective and awareness in the client by using helpful tools to assess these three areas of client's life. I believe this is one of the most valuable aspects of coaching, only recently acknowledged by professional coaches (Life Coaches knew this all along) as the key to improving client performance. Other chapters deal with, by now, standard coaching skills such as listening, questioning, non-verbal communication, learning styles, resistance to coaching, and self-limiting beliefs.

This book is an excellent source for the nature and practice of coaching. The authors have incorporated many other coaches' techniques into their text. Coaching books will always have the limitation of being written word and not live dialogue. It is impossible to gain the skills of coaching through any book. However, for the beginner or intermediate coach, the coaching issues, tips and advice in this book are well worth the price.

This book, written in non-academic prose and strewn with practical examples, is the most comprehensive book yet authored on the contemporary involvement of coaches in the business and executive development world. The book can serve as both a reference text for experienced coaches and a 'how-to' book for coaches seeking instruction. The book is also appropriate for those who want to make decisions about using coaches or establishing a coaching culture or academics or trainers seeking a primary text on coaching for use in an educational setting. Throughout the book, the authors underscore the importance of coaching as a learning opportunity. In tackling these issues the authors provide a blueprint for coaches on how to become more effective and increase their ability to work with a variety of clients. As coaching continues to grow as an applied profession, dominated by practitioners, its credibility is strongly enhanced when solid ideas are presented in a clear, articulate, and succinct fashion. This book easily achieves all those criteria and will add considerably to the wealth of knowledge and professional skills associated with coaching.

I was intrigued by blurbs for the book, since I am interested in evidence-based coaching. However, if you look at the comments of the "reviewers," most of them were written within one or two days of each other and seem to employ the same writing style! This shows a great lack of integrity.
