This is simply the best book I have ever read on the subject of training hunters and jumpers. Chamberlin provides a detailed explanation of conformation of the hunter-type horse, methods of breaking from the colt stage with emphasis on resistance-free training, and more detailed information on how to bring about a true hunter with training proper. I have ridden and owned horses for several years, have read countless books on this subject, and find Brig. Gen. Chamberlin's approach refreshing and right on target. This is an "old style" approach to riding hunt seat and jumping, but valuable nonetheless and enlightened, particularly concerning the forward seat in the saddle and movement of the horse. I find these elements missing in many more modern books on the subject. To conclude, anyone who desires to ride hunt seat or jump should read and analyze this particular book - it will be of immense help.

I am 46 years old and have been lifting weights and working out for most of my life. I was a master fitness trainer in the Army and a physical education major in college. I have been using this workbook for several weeks and am quite pleased with it. The pages have plenty of lines to accomodate exercises performed that day, plus 6 columns that allow you to note 6 different sets and reps for each exercise. The book also contains some blank charts that you can fill in with any informaton you may want to track, i.e., increase in poundage on a certain lift, your body weight, inches gained in size, etc. The author also gives you some suggested routines to do, plus tells you which exercises benefit which parts of your body. The compact size fits nicely into my gymbag. All-in-all I find this logbook very useful and a good value for the money.

My friends are amazed that I can walk into the room of my sleeping 7 month old and put up his clothes and he never wakes up. This is because we set him up on the right foundation from the beginning. Every mom and dad should read this book and realize the potential that even a 6-7 week old baby has regarding there sleep habits.
This is now the only gift that I give to mom's at baby showers and if anyone ever ask for any ideas on sleepy I refer them to this book. Thank you Mrs. Pantley for sharing such wonderful tips and ideas and making me realize that I am doing the best possible job that I can. BZ of AL

Well, there's a good chance that you can find portions that relate to your baby too. I'm actually reading this book at the 4 month point... almost 2 months after I started to systematically and logically come to many of the same conclusions as this author (and of course borrowing ideas from other books that I've read). I'm not sure if I would have understood her many practical points just by reading them but they are certainly dead on when compared with my months of studious logging, suspicions, and experiments. Unless you have the time to hide out in a cabin with your baby and spouse for almost two months as I did, you may never be sufficiently isolated from social commitments to see the patterns that the author describes succinctly. With the holidays upon us and the baby's needs evolving, this book is a good source of reminders on how to stay focused on the baby and her needs -- which will in turn keep the whole family happy!

I have a 6 month old daughter that has never slept more than 1.5 hours at anytime and never on her own. She had terrible acid reflux that went undiagnosed until she was 3 months old and the Dr's kept telling me she was "colicky". Laying down pained her so I did what any compassionate parent does, I walked her to sleep and held her for naps and at night she slept on her side curled up into me so she could nurse as it was the only thing that soothed her (she won't take a paci). She wakes up 5-8 times each night and can't soothe herself, so nurses, sometimes waking up for 1 hour or more. After 6 long months of this, I am back to work and need my sleep more than ever, so at my Dr's advice (and multiple other peoples), I bought Dr. Ferber's book. I was not comfortable having my little girl cry and was not comfortable with the system and happen to run accross this book. I figured it could not hurt to try and last resort, I may need to let her "cry it out". Parents in the same situation: PLEASE TRY THIS FIRST, IT WORKED FOR US IMMEDIATELY!!
I cringe thinking that I would have set her in her crib and just left her to cry when all I had to do is lay her in 1/2 asleep (usually she wakes up and cries for us to pick her up) and talk to her in a soothing voice while touching, kissing and reassuring her. It took her 45 minutes to fall asleep and when she finally did, each time she woke up, she was able to soothe herself as she fell asleep there. She still woke up 3 times between 8-7pm to eat, but this was the FIRST night! I know it sounds so common sense, but what this book gave us was confidence to stick to the plan and take baby steps. I know we have a long road ahead of us, but this was MAJOR progress for our little one - remember, she had NEVER let us put her in her crib and with these little changes and a new mindframe, it worked! PLEASE try this method first and if it doesn't work for you, move on to the next. We as parents love our children and all of them are different, so yes it may or may not work, but it is a GREAT place to start!

This book is a much more gentle way to have your baby get on a sleep schedule at night. I didn't want my son to "cry it out" and this book offered suggestions and methods to avoid just that. It is realistic (doesn't promise your 4-month old will sleep 12 hours straight) and helpful.

I highly recommend this book! Not only for the amazing tips Elizabeth Pantley provides, but for the encouragement & affirmation she also gives!
I implemented her program only three days ago, which by the way is very flexible to your own child's needs, and I am already seeing results! My 8mo. old took a two hour nap this morning!! I know things may vary, but going from to 15 minutes here, and 15 minutes there, I am truly thankful!!
With this book you will no longer beat yourself up or wonder if you are doing things "the right way." She so lovingly encourages you every step. She also provides an extremely helpful nap & night time logs. Along with the logs she includes a step-by-step plan of attack, if you will, for how you will progress in the program!
There were answers for everything: how to transition your baby from a family bed to their own bed. This was something I wondered about for months - and her ideas are so basic, so thoughtful, and simple!
I also love the pictures that are shown in the book. She used "test mommies" when writing this book, and throughout her book she uses their quotes or pictures as an almost guide to help one read through. I found the quotes extremely encouraging!
I can go on and on about this book! If you are thinking about this book it is because you are as sleep deprived as I was - THIS BOOK WILL HELP YOU!!

I brought home an 8 week old shih tzu and used the recommendation to tether him in my room and provide a blanket for him to sleep on. After only 3 nights he was sleeping all night long and when he needs to go out in the morning he barks once. It is amazing how well this worked. I have read numerous puppy books and this one far exceeds any of the books. The focus is on understanding your new best friend and applying the proper techniques to raising a happy and obedient pet.

I love training dogs and learning more about their nature and behavior. This book was extremely helpful, and it answered many of the questions I had about a dog's normal development and milestones. The Monks reinforce what I've discovered about my own dogs, which is that it is never too early to start training and that puppies are capable of becoming charming companions from a very young age.
If you are thinking of getting a puppy, read this book first.

If you're getting a dog or have a dog read this book. It is a great resource for getting your dog in line. It proved to be a source of information that offered balance to the modern training methods that are based only in rewards.
I prefer the positive motivation but there are times when this book has offered ways to correct bad behavior that 'treats' don't help with.
If for no other reason you should read this book to gain insight into dog behavior. These folks have been doing this for a long time and can help humans see their role in a companion animal's life. i.e. that dog's want and need a strong 'alpha' owner - even if it isn't in your personality type (I had to adjust - but it was for the better)

Having owned many dogs in my life, it seems very clear that there is no one right method of making the dog a vital and beloved member of the household. German Shepherds, the breed that the monks work with, are eminently trainable as are a few other breeds. Some are very resistant to training or, at a minimum, require very different approaches. Perhaps the best advice one can give on training is to observe a friend's dog who you think is particularly well-mannered. See how that friend relates to the dog and ask what he or she did when the dog was a pup. Some well-behaved dogs are born and not made. Lucky you if you happen to get one of these; but the connection between man and dog goes back milennia and it is an interesting and complex relationship

I am an R.N., and thought I knew how my fellow medical people, the doctors, thought. They acted in unusual ways at times, but I didn't know why. This book is a portal into the ways that the people who hold our lives in their hands, come to some of the decisions that they make. I recommend it highly to all. You don't have to be in it (the medical profession) to be aware. At some time, sooner or later, we and our families and friends become ill. At that time, we all need doctors. It is good to know a little more of their training, and what might make them tick in a certain way. It is well-written, and makes many valid points.

As a clinician in the aftermath of making a cognitive error, I found Dr. Groopman's book inspiring. It has opened my eyes to blind spots in thinking and how emotions play a bigger part than we want to admit. Reading this book has given me insight about how the very things that are strengths if taken to the enth degree can be a weakness.
This book is relevant not only for the clinician who wants to improve, but for patients who want to learn how to best communicate their needs in a way that gets the attention and focus of the clinician from the moment they say enter into that delicate relationship and allow a stranger to examine their most intimate selves.

Dr. Groopman's insightful book provides valuable insights into the process by which an individual becomes a mature physician and learns to think like one. In today's world, that necessitates rapid turnover of patients and thought processes dictated by medical guidelines and payment schedules which discourage creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. This incisive work provides insights into the thought processes of physicians in making a diagnosis, and how physicians learn to think in that manner. The material is both interesting and pragmatically important for everyone who utilizes physicians and those who should. I found this book invaluable, since I am both a physician and one of those individuals who almost died due to misdiagnosis.

Dr. Groopman is an eminent and wise physician who has written this honest and incisive book on "how doctors think." The emphasis is on how they are subject to errors and omissions in perception, reasoning, decision making, communication, and action, but examples are also provided of excellent performance in which these sorts of errors and omissions are avoided.
Dr. Groopman is an excellent writer, so the book is easy and enjoyable to read, and never gave me that feeling of "just wanting to get it over with."
I think the book would have been better if some of the key non-medical terms (eg, "premature closure" and "framing effect") were italicized in the text and included in a glossary. I would also have liked to see a summary of key points, in bullet-point format, at the end of each chapter. However, even as is, the book still warrants a full 5 stars.
There is actually an extensive literature addressing these issues in depth, in a general way which covers all fields of endeavor, but Dr. Groopman doesn't seem to be aware of this literature. See for example Human Error. Therefore, the particular contribution of this book is that it applies all of this in the setting of medical practice in an easily understood way. For that reason, this book is a must read for everyone: people need to have a realistic sense of the capabilities and limitations of their doctors, so that they can work with them effectively and improve outcomes.
I also highly recommend Dr. Groopman's book The Anatomy of Hope: How People Prevail in the Face of Illness, which is excellent in audio form (masterfully read by Dr. Groopman himself).
