This is a rare book in that it actually teaches how to make images for Web pages, as opposed to just showing different cool Photoshop effects. Most graphics books go through the different features of popular image software, but leave you to figure out how to apply that information in making cool sites. This book focuses on the end product and includes exercisies to give practice. Although it is a textbook, the style is not academic. The situations and examples are all from real-world environments that you might find yourself if you created Web graphics for a living. I would have liked to have seen more on vector software such as Illustrator and Flash, but that minor issue doesn't diminish the value of the book. Side note: The table of contents that Amazon lists book does not match what is actually in the book.

The contemporary technologies gave new possibilities to train students in journalism using such books. Specialy it is important for freshmen. Knowledge of the technology which is described in the book, parlicularly QuarkXpress for the Macintosh, is necessary for competence in teaching students in journalism. The book is organized so well that difficult items clear for understanding. Such books are useful very much for teachers and students in journalism and mass communication.

This is a good book to learn AutoCAD the real way, working on projects. I have taught CAD courses for many years at a local university and this is exactly what was needed, it teaches real world applications.

I would recommend this book to people who have browsed the web and now want to get involved in writing their own web pages. I love the fact its Macintosh oriented! Also, this book takes you through a (brief) history of hypertext, html, etc. and explains (briefly) the controversies between purists and standardizers - I have a better understanding of where all this came from. Pfaffenberger is an excellent and entertaining writer - maybe a little tiny bit simplistic in some ways but not condescendingly patronizing and very thorough. After having looked through several books including "HTML for Dummies" (definitely condescending) and another thick book professing to give you everything you need to know on running a website (which was written by a compendium of people and assumed you understood all sorts of things) - I would say this is a great starting point. (I rated a 9 because I feel there is ALWAYS room for improvement...)

I picked up this book a couple of years ago, when the second edition first came out. It provides a very complete overview of digital video, from capture, through non-linear editing and compression, to output or streaming video (web-based) applications. The major concepts are well-explained and fully illustrated -- including video clips on the CD that show the various phenomena being discussed. The book falls down in only one category -- it devotes a significant amount of time to specific product descriptions and evaluations. However, given the lead time for production of a book, these product descriptions were out-of-date when the book first appeared. They are even more out-of-date now. If you read the book in order to familiarize yourself with desirable features of products and how you might use them, it is excellent. If you use it to select a specific product, you will probably be making a mistake.

I really liked this book! It is the only self-publishing book I have found which describes how to put a spiral bound book together yourself. It also discusses the paste-up, collating, and binding processes which I found helpful. The soft cover book itself is an example of the finished probduct.

A few weeks ago I was in my local computer warehouse (MicroCenter) and was browsing the books like I normally do. Actually, I was NOT planning to buy a thing. Just killing time. Then, I saw this book. The title caught my attention because it implied the book was only concerned with the features in 4. I've become so use to computer books trying to be all things to all versions of an application that I found this approach novel and the size not so daunting like many of the huge tomes on the market. Curious, I picked it up and started reading. I stood there for two hours reading...needless to say, I bought the book... I have since read the entire book and can only say WOW. Great book. Written in a light readable style. Explanations are clear and succinct. Would highly recommend it to the intermediate to advanced Quark user. Thanks to the authors! Good job! Will be looking for your future works.
