Michael Trott's GuideBooks are an invaluable reference for the serious Mathematica programmer. The unsurpassed symbolic computation engine, superior programming paradigms, lightning-fast numerics, and state-of-the-art visualization can justly be considered four of the main pillars of the Mathematica system, and Michael Trott, himself a well-established and renowed expert programmer at Wolfram Research, provides the most in-depth coverage available in these areas. Unlike the contents normally to be found in a numerics book, this numerics GuideBook includes several methods and principles from other fields of mathematics and programming. This GuideBook is truly astonishing in terms of its breadth. The material is highly relevant for the ambitious numerics programmer, and the writing style is very readable, fluent, and consistent. The structure of the material is logical and break-free, and the examples are very well-chosen.
Several elucidating examples also further the knowledge about the mathematical or physical subject matter itself. Just to mention a few, I was amazed to discover that magnetic field lines of stationary flows are NOT closed in general, and some examples of modern mathematics and physics literature are used in contrast to classical physics, such as the continuous time random walk on a graph or quantum carpets in a solution, which provides an interesting classical vs. quantum variant. And next to textbook examples the reader will find many "real life" examples interspersed throughout the book as well, which makes the results quite "tangible".
Michael Trott includes a great comparison of Mathematica's superior compilable machine precision arithmetic (bytecode, instead of machine-code compilation), high-precision arithmetic, and interval arithmetic, all three of which are needed frequently depending on the numerics project at hand.
Needless to say, the book shows a profusion of carefully chosen graphics that help understanding the matter or result instantly. Here Michael Trott's expert ability as a graphics programmer is indispensible.
All references are hyperlinked through their respective DOI numbers. The DVD contains the texts and inputs of the other three GuideBooks as well.

The only way to pass a Microsoft Exam

In 1996 I took my first Microsoft Certification Exam, Windows 95. I was shocked, this was the exam from hell. I was among the 70% of first time takers that flunked. The company I worked for would not reimburse the cost of a failed test, so my faiure also took $100.00 out of my pocket. A friend suggested the Sybex study guide to the exam. I not only learned more than I had taking the Microsoft course, I also learned the rationale behind the way a Microsoft test is constructed. I passed the W95 exam on the retake. Since then I have used Sybex study guides for all Microsoft Certifications. In fact, I have passed exams without ever having taken the course just by using these study guides, including this one. If you are an IT professional, and need to build a portfolio of Microsoft certifications, this is the best money you will ever spend.

An excellent 3D surface modeling course. Easily assimilated material. Allows both student and professional to quickly familiarize themselves with the functions and commands, then continues to serve as an online/offline reference. All of the examples within the textbook are on the cd -- complete with multimedia demonstrations.

Finally, a Power Pack book. I had searched far and wide but I was not able to find a book that could serve my needs for Mechanical Desktop. Then I found this Power Pack book and it is great. It has a friendly format and it will definately come in handy for the next class that I have to teach.

The finest intro to Parametric Solid and Assembly Modeling

Having read a number of books on Parametric Solid and Assembly Modeling, I can say assuredly that this book, although a bit dated now (copyright in 1998), is still the best introduction to this subject. This is because the author, Steven K. Howell, actually explains the rationale for using the various commands to construct various solids and then to assemble them together to form the final assembly. Whereas other books just have you pretty much follow a cookbook approach to constructing parametric solids and assemblies thereof, this book is chock full of explanations. As an indication of how highly I value this book, I periodically visit Amazon.com and other on-line bookstores just hoping that Mr. Howell has written another book on the subject. And when I don't find a later book, I search the internet for any news of a later book. If I had to pick just one book for learning any version of Mechanical Desktop (yes, even Version 5), this would be it.
